SUMMARY:Here Is Where We Meet: Dennis Congdon & Susan Lichtman
DESCRIPTION:** This exhibition is temporarily suspended. \nHere Is Where We Meet features large-scale paintings and works on paper by Dennis Congdon and Susan Lichtman. \nThe artists’ styles are decidedly distinct and yet united by the deliberate attention given to the way in which a painting is constructed. Congdon makes playfully saturated works with the use of a stencil template. Lichtman is a figurative painter of domestic spaces who understands the practice of painting to be a “life of the mind.”  Here is Where We Meet looks at how each artist riffs on the language of painting as well as the written word. \nThroughout the exhibition\, writers and poets will be invited to respond to the visual works.  Curator Laurel Sucsy states\, “I am inspired by the relationship between painters and poets and how artists working in each discipline use the other for inspiration and structure.” \nIn the month of April\, the gallery will host a poetry night during which a collection of responses will be presented to the public. \nCurated by Laurel Sucsy\nThis LifeWorks exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Don Pelts Memorial Foundation. \n Dennis Congdon:\nDennis Congdon holds a BFA in Painting from RISD and an MFA from Yale. In 1983\, he won the Prix de Rome and became a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome.  He has taught painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Tyler School of Art and has been on the faculty at RISD since 1984. In 2003\, he received a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship\, and in 2010\, he received RISD’s John R. Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching.  \nCongdon’s work has been exhibited widely. Since 2013\, he has had three solo shows in New York City: CUE Foundation in 2013 (curated by Stanley Whitney\,); Horton Gallery in 2014 ; and “Congeries” at Zieher Smith and Horton Gallery in 2015. In 2015\, his large work “Hummocks” was included in the James and Audrey Foster Prize Exhibition at the ICA Boston (curated by kijidome). \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nAbout Susan Lichtman:\nSusan Lichtman is a figurative painter of domestic spaces\, working out of her home studio in southeastern Massachusetts. She is the Charles Bloom Professor of the Arts of Design at Brandeis University\, where she has taught painting and drawing since 1980.  \nLichtman received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and an MFA in Painting from Yale University School of Art. A recipient of a 2018 fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, she also has awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. She was the Frances Niederer Artist-in-Residence at Hollins University in 2017 and has been a visiting critic and lecturer at studio art programs throughout the U.S. and Europe. Lichtman has recently exhibited paintings at Steven Harvey Fine Arts Projects in New York\, at Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia\, and the Wilson Museum of Hollins University in Roanoke\, VA.  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nAbout the Curator (Laurel Sucsy):\nLaurel Sucsy is a painter and writer living in Memphis\, TN. She received a BA from Bowdoin College and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. She has taught at Rhodes College and Memphis College of Art. Recent curatorial projects include Between the Eyes\, an exploration into abstract painting and how we see it. Recent exhibitions include Finding the Edge\, at The Dixon Gallery and Gardens (TN) and Paintings at John Davis Gallery (NY). She is the director of LifeWorks\, which aims to activate a sense of community through exposure to the arts.

SUMMARY:Nick Pagliari with Me & Leah in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by former Memphian and singer/songwriter Nick Pagliari with local duo Me & Leah. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 8:30 pm | Performance at 9 pm \nYears before kicking off his career as a folk-rock singer/songwriter\, Nick Pagliari grew up in Memphis\, TN\, raised on the soulful sounds of the south. Stax classics and Muscle Shoals hits filled the family jukebox\, along with songs by Billy Joel\, the Beach Boys\, and Motown groups. Nick later moved to Nashville\, where he released a pair of acclaimed albums before heading west to Austin. Even so\, that childhood soundtrack — a blend of roots\, rhythm\, and raw melody — always felt like home. \nMidway\, Pagliari’s third record — and first in over a decade — finds him revisiting the sounds that helped shape his love for music. Fueled by sharp songwriting\, blasts of brass\, swirling organ\, and rootsy arrangements\, it’s an Americana album that focuses on Memphis soul rather than Nashville twang. \nInfluenced by icons like Tom Petty\, Van Morrison\, and the Band\, his songs have always packed a direct punch\, rooted in the fuss-free appeal of his voice and folksy songwriting. Those same ingredients ground Midway\, but so does Pagliari’s broadened perspective. Those milestones rear their heads throughout Midway\, influencing songs like “The Heart is a Muscle” — a salute to his wife\, filled with horn arrangements by producer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Estes (Abigail Washburn\, Langhorne Slim)\, grooves from drummer Jamie Dick (Rhiannon Giddens\, Milk Carton Kids)\, and Robbie Robertson-worthy guitar riffs by Jeremy Fetzer (Steelism) — and the heartland rocker “Damn These Words\,” written from the perspective of his autistic son. \nThis is an album whose warm\, vintage-inspired sound nods to the past while pushing toward something new. The road goes on forever\, and Pagliari — midway through or not — is charting his own course.

SUMMARY:Alice Hasen & the Blaze with Blueshift Ensemble in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Alice Hasen & the Blaze with an opening performance by Blueshift Ensemble in The Green Room. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nBorn in Vermont and based in Memphis\, Alice Hasen is a professional violinist\, recording artist\, and songwriter. She leads Alice Hasen & the Blaze and is part of the Blackwater Trio\, an acoustic rock band. Alice is known for her unique playing style\, which combines the virtuosity of her classical upbringing with the freedom and creativity of improvisation. \nShe has been called “one in a million” by Alan Rowoth\, founder of folkmusic.org\, and “a monster talent” by Jim Hurst\, nationally acclaimed guitarist. She is most at home at the crossroads of genre\, pushing the traditional sounds of violin and fiddle out of their comfort zones and into the realms of jazz\, pop\, funk\, and rock. \nIn September 2019\, Alice released her debut solo album\, “Violintro\,” which features songs written and co-written by Alice and performances by Memphis musicians. Bluff City Life called Violintro “an impressive showcase of the sheer breadth of Hasen’s talents across all genres… Hasen has made her Violintro as an emerging star.” Ric Chetter of Radio Memphis called it “one of the most dynamic sounds out there.” \nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, soul\, and hip hop and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. The astronomical term “blueshift” indicates an object’s moving closer toward the observer. Blueshift aims to bring concert music and art out of the concert hall and into the Memphis community.

SUMMARY:Marc Ribot in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by Marc Ribot. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nRolling Stone points out that “guitarist Marc Ribot helped Tom Waits refine a new\, weird Americana on 1985’s Rain Dogs\, and since then he’s become the go-to guitar guy for all kinds of roots-music adventurers: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss\, Elvis Costello\, John Mellencamp.” Additional recording credits include Neko Case\, Diana Krall\, Elton John/Leon Russell’s The Union\, Solomon Burke\, John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards\, Marianne Faithful\, Joe Henry\, Allen Toussaint\, Medeski Martin & Wood\, Caetono Veloso\, Susana Baca\, Allen Ginsburg\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Nora Jones\, Jolie Holland\, Akiko Yano\, The Black Keys\, and many others. \nMarc works regularly with Grammy® Award-winning producer T Bone Burnett and New York composer John Zorn. He has also composed and performed on numerous film scores such as “Walk The Line” (James Mangold)\, “The Kids Are All Right\,” and “The Departed” (Martin Scorcese). \nMarc Ribot\, who The New York Times describes as “a deceptively articulate artist who uses inarticulateness as an expressive device\,” has released 25 albums under his own name over a 40-year career\, exploring everything from the pioneering jazz of Albert Ayler to the Cuban son of Arsenio Rodríguez. The enigmatic guitarist has released six very diverse solo guitar albums: (including John Zorn’s Book of Heads\, Plays the Works of Frantz Casseus\, Saints\, Don’t Blame Me\, Exercises in Futility)\, and 2010’s Silent Movies has been described as a “down-in-mouth-near masterpiece” by the Village Voice and earned critical praise across the board. His live solo performances are unpredictable events which may draw on all of these or none\, creating a sonic matrix of memory\, free improvisation\, zeitgeist\, extra-terrestrial radio signals\, and much more … always leaving the listener on the edge of their seats. \n“Dazzling and unique … The music isn’t pretty in the usual sense of the word\, but it grows with intense feeling\, and the effect is breathtaking\, even emotionally compelling. You wish you’d been there to hear it\, to hold your breath for long stretches of daring\, only to suck the air back in in gulps when it was possible… ” — Will Layman\, Pop Matters \n“Guitarist Marc Ribot returns to the original scene in spirit and in songbook\, playing feverishly and paying homage … Ribot is absolutely concentrated and sounds brilliant … building fruitfully on a venerable New York legacy\, adding another chapter.” — John Corbett\, DownBeat \n“..he can sit down with just his guitar and simultaneously confound you with technique\, beauty\, and surprise…The result is solo guitar at its finest.” — John Garratt\, PopMatters \n“A one-of-a-kind guitarist equally adept providing an atmospheric backdrop for Tom Waits as he is calling down the heavens with skronky free jazz\, Ribot’s lush collection of soundtrack work for films both real and imagined only gets richer with each listen. Solo guitar albums can sometimes sound spare or monochromatic\, yet Ribot never operates in less than living color.” — Chris Barton\, LA Times \n“Ribot is one of the great guitarists of today\, having worked for decades as a versatile sideman and an avant-garde-leaning leader\, but he sort of blindsided me here\, an introspective solo guitar gem that is utterly beguiling.” — Tad Hendrickson\, AOL Spinner

SUMMARY:Dave King & Julian Lage in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by guitarist Julian Lage and drummer Dave King. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nHailed as one of the most prodigious guitarists of his generation\, Julian Lage has spent more than a decade searching through the myriad strains of American musical history via impeccable technique\, free association\, and a spirit of infinite possibility. \nThough only 31\, the New York-based musician boasts a long\, prolific resume that includes collaborations with Gary Burton\, John Zorn\, Nels Cline\, Chris Eldridge\, Fred Hersch\, David Grisman\, Béla Fleck\, and Charles Lloyd. \nLove Hurts \, which marks his first album to feature drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus)\, sees the GRAMMY-nominated guitarist exploring the American song catalog from a truly unique vantage point\, performing music written by a range of audacious and original artists\, from Roy Orbison to Ornette Coleman\, Jimmy Giuffre to Peter Ivers. \nLove Hurts finds Lage searching through the unfettered artistic freedom of the late 1960s and 1970s\, the ambitious energy and lack of restrictions placed upon artists of all genres providing a guiding light for the sessions. “The covers on this record are like when you move into a new apartment; the last thing you do is hang your pictures on the wall\,” Lage says. “Those pictures define your aesthetic in a way. So the tunes we chose kind of define the aesthetic I love but hadn’t put on a record yet.” \nThe impetus for Lage to delve deeper into his own improvisational influences was initially catalyzed by a series of 2018 live dates that saw him and bassist Jorge Roeder joined by Dave King\, composer and drummer extraordinaire with The Bad Plus. \n“Dave was like the most beautiful curveball being thrown in\,” Lage says. “He’s one of the greatest improvising forces and artistic visionaries. We became close friends over the last couple of years. We played some shows together and I thought\, this is really heavy. He brings something out in Jorge and I that is native to the music we grew up playing but doesn’t always get prompted in this particular way. I thought\, this is someone who can do it all. He can light that fire as a player and he can help us formulate a strong collective vision.”

SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha: Crosstown Arts Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists Carl E. Moore\, S. Erin Batiste\, Adriana Monsalve\, Robert Goodman\, and Zaire Love will discuss their work in a Pecha Kucha-style artist talk. \nThe Crosstown Arts residency program offers multidisciplinary residencies to visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators\, working in any creative discipline including visual and performing arts\, music\, film\, and writing in all genres. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

SUMMARY:Shards of Color and Other Broken Things
DESCRIPTION:Shards of Color and Other Broken Things is an exploration of color and the way it’s manipulated by image and perspective. \nJoy Murray works in a narrative style and uses text in her paintings. She uses many kinds of paper\, watercolor\, acrylic\, and collage. She explores concepts of transformation and the intersection of human life and the natural world. This show will feature many of her pieces focused on disability and sacred transformation of the body. \nTheOuterCircle travels all over the world to expand his vision. His abstract paintings voice subconscious ideas. His pieces have multiple layers and create texture within color. In addition to paint brushes\, he uses everything from his fingers to credit cards to achieve a chaotic balance between color and texture. \nThe show will also feature the music of guitarist Mark Allen. \n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Spotlight Concert Series: Piano Quintets Lost in Time
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nJoin us in Crosstown Theater for the Spotlight Concert Series\, featuring piano quintets by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nThis special performance by Memphis Symphony Orchestra musicians Priscilla Tsai\, Jordan Musgrave\, Ruth Burgess\, Josh Muzzi\, and pianist Tingting Yao features a program of piano quintets “lost in time” by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nGeneral Admission $10 | $5 with student ID\nDoors at 6 pm | Performance at 7 pm \nViolinist Jordan Musgraves writes about the program:\n“We happened upon these pieces in a YouTube channel that features recordings of obscure pieces. These are two that really stand out\, not only because the quality is so good but because when you dig down into why they never became widely known\, it seems such a shame that we don’t know these composers today. \nZdenek Fibich was a contemporary of Smetana and Dvorak and actually the first to ever use Czech folk music in symphonic works (their use of folk song was inspired by Fibich). In his time\, he did have some acclaim\, though he was criticized for not being quite Czech nationalist enough and especially for composing operas in the Wagnerian style. Born of a Czech father\, a forestry official\, and a German-Viennese mother\, he was of mixed heritage and was boycotted by most of the Czech orchestras. His music only survives because of his students\, who championed it. \nDora Pejacovic\, a Hungarian-Croatian composer firmly in the Romantic era\, was slightly later in time. Her music did not reach wide acclaim\, but even in an era of music and society dominated by men\, she had a large output of composition\, starting at age 12. She was mostly a self-taught composer\, but luckily for us\, was encouraged by several other composers who saw her talent and advocated for her music. She might have composed much more but sadly passed away following childbirth at age 39. Today\, there is an ongoing effort to publish her music\, much of which remains unpublished.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Lisa Nobumoto and Her Sizzling Six in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nVocalist Lisa Nobumoto and Her Sizzling Six perform the music and arrangements of tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nThis especially unique sextet\, led by vocalist Lisa Nobumoto\, brings with it a star-studded cast to The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. The instrumentation includes Alvie Givhan (piano)\, Lance Williams (bass)\, Jim Pettit (drums)\, Sidney Ford (tenor sax)\, Nate Wilensky (trumpet)\, and Howard Lamb (trombone). \nFormidably\, a protégé of the late tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards\, Lisa Nobumoto carries the lyrics to some of his most notable originals\, including “Sunset Eyes” and “Going Home\,” the former being the song that laid the groundwork for Clifford Brown’s first solo which gained him worldwide recognition. \nTeddy Edwards is a name well-known to serious be-bop fans. His style follows the true and authentic genre of jazz that heralded names like alto sax player Charlie Parker and the noted trumpeter Howard McGhee. \nIn fact\, it is said that when Charlie Parker left New York to record in Los Angeles\, he went to find Teddy Edwards. Teddy Edwards became the first tenor saxophonist in history to record a be-bop solo on tenor saxophone with “Up In Dodo’s Room” in 1946 on the Dial Label. \nThis exciting musical adventure into the music of Teddy Edwards will include a variety of his instrumentals and be-bop solos emoting from Memphis’ best jazz musicians.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Crosstown Arthouse presents Klute
DESCRIPTION:** The event is postponed until further notice. \nJane Fonda (Cat Ballou\, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?\, Barbarella) stars as a groovy call girl and wannabe actress who may or may not be connected to a dead john (who ran a chemical company by day). Donald Sutherland (MASH\,  The Kentucky Fried Movie) plays the title character Klute\, a detective brought in by a chemical company executive to find out what really happened. Co-starring Roy Scheider (Jaws\, Jaws II) as Jane Fonda’s pimp. Also co-starring the super-fun and sleazy NYC of the 1970s. Klute won a lot of Oscars\, but don’t hold that against it. IT IS A GREAT MOVIE ANYWAY!! \nAlan J. Pakula/1971/114 minutes \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Paul Asbell
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nCrosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. March’s performance features guitarist Paul Asbell in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nFrom his early years playing blues on Chicago’s South Side to his present multi-faceted career based out of northern Vermont\, Paul Abell has earned an underground reputation as a true “musician’s musician.” He has played and recorded with Muddy Waters\, John Lee Hooker\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Lightnin’ Hopkins\, Otis Rush\, Magic Sam\, Earl Hooker\, Lightnin’ Slim\, Paul Butterfield\, Sam Lay\, Pops Staples\, Donny Hathaway\, and numerous others while in his hometown of Chicago\, Illinois. \nPaul moved to Vermont\, where he still lives\, in the heady “back-to-the-land” days of 1971. He soon started playing and recording with a head-spinningly diverse array of artists\, including Big Mama Thornton\, singer-songwriters Paul Siebel\, Jim Ringer\, Mary McCaslin\, and Rosalie Sorrells\, jazz greats Jon Hendricks\, Bobby McFerrin\, Sonny Stitt\, and Nick Brignola\, and many others. In 1978\, seeking an outlet for more personal musical visions\, he formed Kilimanjaro\, and recorded two award-winning albums for Philo Records. \nSoon after\, the band performed at the Kool Jazz Festival at SPAC\, the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland\, and numerous national tours and concert dates. Kilimanjaro served as backup band on lengthy national tours with Esther Satterfield\, and Paul Butterfield\, with whom they played the Montreal Jazz Festival\, and the Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. \nIn 1981\, Paul and other members of Kilimanjaro joined forces with a legendary saxophonist and blues singer to form Big Joe Burrell and the Unknown Blues Band. Together\, they performed at many festivals\, including the Kool Jazz Festival\, toured Russia\, Holland\, and Canada\, and served as back-up band for Marva Wright\, Kenny Neal\, W.C. Clark\, and others. The UBB remained a Northeast regional favorite for over 20 years\, until Big Joe’s passing in 2005. \nPersonal performance credits in recent years include David Bromberg\, Betty Carter\, Joshua Redman\, James Carter\, Kermit Ruffins\, Michael Ray\, the Sun Ra Arkestra\, The Wild Magnolias\, John Stowell\, guitar wunderkind Julian Lage\, Dave Grippo\, and former students Trey Anastasio and Nick Cassarino. Paul has taught guitar for over 45 years. Private instruction remains a favored format\, but he has also taught for several decades on a university level\, including positions at Dartmouth College\, St. Michael’s College\, and presently at Middlebury College and the University Of Vermont.
