SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5:30-6 p.m. \nDiscussion 6-8 p.m. \n\nFacilitator: Susan Maakestad\nPresenting Artist(s):\nZach Kremer\nHollie McDonald\nErica Qualy\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \nOrganized by Crosstown Arts in partnership with ArtsMemphis ArtsAccelerator.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Concept to Camera
DESCRIPTION:Monthly filmmmaking forum presented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts. May topic: Concept to Camera with Ryan Earl Parker. \n\nThe cinematographer is not only one of the key creative minds on a film\, but also the craftsperson whose work is most directly impactful to that film’s visual experience. Join esteemed cinematographer Ryan Earl Parker (Sweet\, Sweet Lonely Girl\, Feral) as he guides you through his creative process\, which is less focused on the camera and lighting tools as it is on how to communicate with a director\, and\, ultimately\, connect with and execute their unique vision. Cinematography is much more than the type of camera you use or simply creating beautiful images; it’s about shooting in a way that is relevant to the film itself\, as well as turning a director’s abstract ideas into a purposeful and visually engaging work. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m./panel discussion at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. Complimentary beverages will be available.

SUMMARY:Inaugurate the Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Inaugurate the Resistance is an exhibition on Memphians’ experiences of the Women’s Marches that happened on January 21\, 2017 in Washington\, DC\, and Memphis. \n\nOn view: May 4-5\, 3-9 p.m.; May 6-8\, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.\nOpening reception: May 5\, 6-9 p.m. \n\nThrough photographs\, audio recordings\, video footage\, and mixed media\, the exhibit creates a immersive and participatory experience for audiences. \nCollaborating artists include photographer and photojournalist Yalonda M. James\, Joann Self Selvidge (True Story Pictures)\, and Sara Kaye Larson (Maps & Weather Productions)\, with support from co-curators Leah Keys (Spillit)\, and Jamie Harmon (Amurica). \nThe immersive\, artist-driven elements of the exhibit include a visual tunnel of march footage that audiences can walk through as if they were march participants\, a portrait wall of photographs\, and audio buttons that play excerpts of participants’ personal stories. \nCommunity voices and perspectives are reflected in the exhibit via the “storytelling wall\,” which engages audiences through their photos and stories to include their experiences in the show. \nPrior to the show\, the artists are inviting Memphians who attended a women’s march to submit photos of themselves via www.InaugurateTheResistance.com for a “community photo grid” that is integrated into the storytelling portion of the exhibition. Then\, on opening and closing nights\, the artists will offer interactive opportunities for audiences to bring their protest signs and to record their stories onsite at the Spillit Storybooth. \nAfter the exhibit\, these audio recordings will be shared online via the Storycorps.Me archive and donated to the Crossroads to Freedom Digital Archive at Rhodes College and the Library of Congress. For more information\, visit www.InaugurateTheResistance.com. \nFacebook invite

SUMMARY:Re-Collections: Get as Close as You Want
DESCRIPTION:Works by Nate Renner \nOrganized by the artist \n\nRe-Collections reflects Renner’s memories of summers spent in Carlisle\, Arkansas with his paternal grandmother. The rural sharecropper’s house where she lived and the commercial products she used inspire Renner’s most vivid memories. Repetition in screen printing engrains memory in the mind\, gray-scale associates “black and white” with the finality of the past\, and the line paintings support reflection. Re-Collections transforms ephemeral memory into tangible history. \nFacebook invite

SUMMARY:Frame Traps: Street Fighter Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Show of artwork by Kenneth Alexander inspired by the video game\, Street Fighter. Jazz fusion band Reach will perform remixes of Street Fighter background music. Cosplay models will accent the room. Walk-in cosplay models are welcome. \nFrom the artist\, Kenneth Alexander:\n“Imagination is another reality that molds us. Frame Traps is an art show that depicts the growth of decision-making through the concentration of fighting games. If I needed ways to figure out how to deal with certain life situations on my own\, I would play out scenarios through the matches I fought. As I used this practice more often\, I found myself retaining information and coming up with more creative ideas in normal life. I want to show that gaming is a great source to grow and build a strong mind and to help one become a better person.”

SUMMARY:Barrier Free
DESCRIPTION:A portion of a socially engaged art installation designed for the Latino Memphis Festival by Yancy Villa-Calvo will be on view at in the Crosstown Concourse’s Central Atrium in this week-long pop-up exhibition. \nBuilding on the current and controversial idea of the proposed wall along the US-Mexico border\, the installation aims to create awareness and encourages viewers to pause\, reflect\, and act. \nThe installation attempts to be inclusive and open to interpretation. Symbols make reference to barriers around nationality\, race\, religion\, sexual orientation and identity\, gender\, and socioeconomic aspects. This project is less about the actual wall and more about the systematic attempts to divide individuals\, families\, and communities. \n\nYancy will give an artist talk in front of the installation on Tuesday\, May 30\, noon-12:30 p.m. A Q&A will follow. \n\nioby Campaign
