DESCRIPTION:Artist and architect Brantley Ellzey discusses his work on display in “Sweet\,” an exhibition of over 20 new works created from hand-rolled construction paper in a kaleidoscopic array of colors and forms. \n“Sweet” is on display from October 7th through November 5th. \n\nArtist Biography\nBrantley Ellzey is an architect and artist who has operated an independent studio in the Crosstown neighborhood of Memphis since 2010.  With degrees in Architecture and Theater Design from Tulane University\, Ellzey creates art that illustrates the precision and structural form of architecture while embodying the colorful thrill and drama of the theater.  His works consist primarily of paper from magazines\, books and other printed media which he deconstructs\, rolls and methodically builds into complex\, layered forms.  Drawing from the themes of the selected materials\, he expresses the anatomy of a journal\, making the subject and content visually apparent in the piece with lines\, color and overall construction.  His work is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States\, such as Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital\, West Cancer Center\, Bass Berry + Sims\, Wunderlich Securities\, and Iberia Bank. Examples of his architectural work are First Congregational Church\, The Museum of Modern Spinal Surgery at Medtronic\,The Kemmons Wilson Exhibit at the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management at University of Memphis\, the renovation of Immaculate Conception Cathedral\, and Ballet Memphis (Cordova).

The students\, who range in age from 11 to 14 years and attend Humes Preparatory Academy\, devised the script themselves. In the play\, a bullying incident is explained from the perspectives of parents\, faculty\, and kids through documentary\, film\, sketches and staged monologues.\n\nThe after-school workshop is taught by professional playwright\, actress\, and University of Memphis MFA candidate in theatre Jazmin Miller.

DESCRIPTION:Fall tour stop for hip-hop artist TAME and electronic producer AF THE NAYSAYER. \nAbout TAME\nThe Aspiring Me (a.k.a. TAME) is the oldest son of late Houston hip-hop legend Big Mello. Lineage aside\, TAME has gained a reputation not only as one of the city’s wittiest MCs\, but also as one of its most versatile producers. Since 2010\, he has toured across North America and amassed a sizable discography; “OK Whatever\,” his second album and sixth release overall\, was released this past spring. Fans of artists like Chance the Rapper\, Childish Gambino\, and Fat Tony (who guests on TAME’s latest album\, “OK Whatever”) will greatly enjoy TAME’s music. \nAbout AF THE NAYSAYER\nAF THE NAYSAYER is a New Orleans-based producer whose music blends 1980s R&B with 1990s G-funk. His debut EP\, “The Autodidact Instrumentals\,” has served as a backdrop for many BMX web edits (Fitbikeco\, Dan’s Comp\, ESPN). AF has performed 300+ shows across North America since the EP’s release\, while also curating “Dolo Jazz Suite\,” a regional showcase for fellow beatmakers. He is also the New Orleans ambassador for Red Bull Music Academy. AF will release his follow-up EP\, “Armed Wing Battle Unit\,” this month. Fans of artists like Dam-Funk\, Flying Lotus\, and Lone will greatly enjoy AF’s music.

The class will use simple assignments to help the student understand the basic fundamentals of photography and digital editing in the Crosstown Arts Digital Lab. \nThe only class requirement is some sort of photographic device capable of uploading photographs to a Mac computer. \nThis is a 3-week workshop meeting Mondays\, Nov. 14\, 21\, and 28\, from 5:30-8:30 pm. \nLocation: Crosstown Arts Digital Lab\, entrance at Parcels Leasing Office\, 430 N. DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5-6 pm \nDiscussion 6-8 pm \n\n  \nFacilitator: Terri Phillips\nParticipating Artists:\nLucero Soto\nSara Moseley\nLauren Pigford\nEG Balton \n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. SUMMARY:The Moonpie Project Presents Vitus Shell
DESCRIPTION:A new mural by Vitus Shell \nLocation: Crosstown Arts alley between 430 & 438 N. Cleveland \nFree food + drinks \nThe Moonpie Project is an ongoing\, rotating mural series curated by Michael Roy in memory of muralist Brad Wells. \nOrganized in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\nVitus Shell’s paintings encompass a depth and intensity usually displayed in the work of artists far past his age. While a student at Memphis College of Art\, the Monroe\, Louisiana\, native traveled and learned more about different cultures and art forms. He attended the National Black Fine Arts Show in 1999 for the first time and received a first-hand view of the inner workings of the art world. Other artists he met while at MCA who have continuously inspired him include Brenda Joysmith\, George Hunt\, and Alonzo Davis. \nTo date\, he has accumulated an impressive list of achievements\, some of which include: participating in exhibits at universities\, museums\, and private galleries across the country; painting a mural for the National Civil Rights Museum’s NBA Pioneers exhibit; and being commissioned to do public art by the Memphis UrbanArt Commission. Opportunities for Shell continue to arise for him and he leaves himself open to all they have to offer. He is humble about his bright future\, yet poised to become of the greatest artistic “voices” of his generation.

The studio will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m.\, and Ben will give an artist talk at 2 p.m. \n\nBen Butler received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BA from Bowdoin College.  His work has been exhibited in solo shows in New York at Coleman Burke Gallery and Plane Space\, as well as at Zg Gallery in Chicago\, John Davis Gallery in Hudson\, New York\, and Davidson Galleries in Seattle\, among others.  He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Individual Artist Grant and numerous fellowships at residency programs including the MacDowell Colony\, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art\, and the Ucross Foundation. \nHe currently lives and works in Memphis\, Tennessee and Quogue\, New York.
