The Mystic is not affiliated with any defined belief system\, but is a shared listening experience intended to deepen our understanding of one another. \nThe Mystic is hosted by a rotated panel including Rabbi Micah Greenstein\, Chris Miner\, Dr. Scott Morris\, Dr. Sonia Walker\, and Kirk Whalum\, with a variety of musical guests. \nThis month’s theme: “Talking About My Generation\,” hosted by Rabbi Micah Greenstein \nEach generation label (Greatest\, Boomers\, Millennials\, X\, Y\, Z) serves as a shorthand to reference nearly 20 years of attitude\, motivations\, and historic events.  As people grow older\, what can we learn from younger adults and elders beyond the stereotypes?  Come to the Mystic in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for deep conversation\, moving music\, and true community.  All are welcome so spread the word.

Shawn Amos & The Brotherhood in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nSince 2018’s acclaimed\, politically charged “The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down\,” The Rev has been on the road non-stop with The Brotherhood — a cohesive band of legit titans featuring drummer Brady Blade (Buddy & Julie Miller\, Dave Matthews\, Indigo Girls)\, bassist Christopher Thomas (Norah Jones\, Carly Simon\, Macy Gray)\, and the long-time Rev aide-de-camp/guitarist Chris “Doctor” Roberts. All are friends from a life in music who are now gathered on a singular mission. \n2019 also saw The Rev alighting in Texas\, where the South begins\, the West ends\, and something else is taking shape — a world away\, geographically and culturally\, from his native LA. It is in the hill country of Texas where the Rev and the Brotherhood convened for a new recording slated for a 2020 release. Blade\, Thomas\, and Roberts provide not only musical but also spiritual and emotional support for embracing new territory\, artistically and otherwise. \n“All I’m doing is singing and playing harp\,” the Rev says. “I couldn’t imagine making this music with people who are not friends.” \nPrior to emerging as the Reverend in 2013\, folks knew Shawn Amos as producer (Solomon Burke’s Live in Nashville\, and Shout! Factory box set Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones)\, content creator for companies looking for ways to tell their stories on the internet\, and Americana singer-songwriter who’d grown up in a dramatically dysfunctional L.A. home (a story the Rev serialized as Cookies & Milk in the Huffington Post). \nUnlike past Shawn Amos collaborations with Matthew Sweet and Solomon Burke\, the Brotherhood is in it for the long haul. “Everybody feels pride of ownership\,” the Rev says of Blue Sky. The band has already hit the road and will tour through 2020. \n“These songs are really special to Shawn\,” says Brady Blade\, who previously hosted the Rev’s debut album (produced by Mindi Abair) at his Shreveport studio\, and laid down drums. “It’s up to us whether we’re ready to jump in and contribute 150%. If we’re not\, it’s not a brotherhood.” \nClearly\, from the barn-burning blues stomp of “Counting Down the Days” to the smoky R & B of “Water” to the rollicking “27 Dollars\,” the Brotherhood is\, indeed\, down. \nThe material showcases Shawn Amos’ songwriting like no previous Rev outing; here furious\, there vulnerable; here gadabout and crazy\, there forlorn and tender; all buoyed by musicians emboldening a beloved family member. \n“When I first played blues\,” the Rev says\, “I had no interest in writing. I put up a firewall between the Rev and my Americana past.” He’s referring to his three Shawn Amos albums\, lauded singer-songwriter offerings featuring Ray Parker\, Jr.\, Solomon Burke\, and the Jayhawks’ Mark Olson. “But I slowly got the bug again. This is the first time I’ve had the space to try to be more of a singer-songwriter within the confines of the blues.” \nBrady Blade says\, “Brotherhood\, to me\, means togetherness\, being able to interact with each other in a more personal way because it’s not like\, ‘Oh\, he’s my boss. I’m just the side guy.’ The Brotherhood\, in this context with Shawn\, helps drive the music. Because the tension has to be there. Also\, the happiness has to be there. For all of us\, the happiness has definitely come out on this record.” \nHappiness due in part to a creative spirit fully immersed in the work\, able to access and manifest the nitty-gritty because his brothers have his back. “My whole artistic life has been a process of: How do I get all of me to show up?” the Rev says. “I fought hard to be here\, so I’m gonna make sure all of me shows up.”

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Time and Place
DESCRIPTION:Lee Moses (1941-1998)\, a music prodigy\, is considered one of the greatest unknown musicians among Baby Huey or Sixto Rodriguez (Sugar Man). He was part of a soul scene in Atlanta between the ’60s and the ’70s. His one album\, Time and Place (1971)\, did not take off. During his time in New York\, Moses played with greatest\, including Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His music has now garnered a community of appreciation. Songs such as “Bad Girl” was used in the 2014 French film House of Tolerance\, and “If Loving You Is A Crime” was used in 2013 American film The Teacher. What makes his story remarkable is there’s not much to be found on Lee Moses. Even in his hometown of Atlanta\, there are no physical traces of him. The locations where Moses once performed no longer exist. TIME AND PLACE aims to connect the time of Lee Moses with the place Atlanta is becoming now.  Simon David/2019/76 minutes \nDirector Simon David will be available for a Q&A after the film. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \n

DESCRIPTION:A new film by Robert Greenwald \nSuppressed: The Fight to Vote is a new documentary by Robert Greenwald (director of Outfoxed\, Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price\, and Making a Killing: Guns\, Greed\, & the NRA)\, weaves together personal stories from voters across the state of Georgia to paint an undeniable picture of voter suppression in the 2018 midterm election where Stacey Abrams fought to become the first Black female governor in the U.S. The issues Georgians faced included polling place closures\, voter purges\, missing absentee ballots\, extreme wait times and a host of voter ID issues – all of which disproportionately prevented many students and people of color from casting their ballots. \nSuppressed: The Fight to Vote features experts\, poll watchers and everyday Georgians speaking to the reality of voter suppression and the threat it poses in 2020. In a race that was ultimately decided by 54\,723 votes\, the film exposes how the basic constitutional right to vote to continues to be under siege in America. If your vote wasn’t important\, they wouldn’t try to suppress it. \nPresented by Team Upstream\, a social justice group from Church of the River\, Memphis\, TN.  Team Upstream concentrates on voter registration\, apathy\, and suppression. \nRefreshments at 6 pm | Film at 6:30 pm

She has a husband who runs a porno theater and two lousy children with serious problems of their own. Teen pregnancy\, murder\, cocaine\, booze\, Edith Massey the egg lady as Cuddles Kovinsky!\, Stiv Bators (RIP!). From the Dead Boys as Bo-Bo Belsinger\, dogs dead by apparent suicide\, macrame (the craft!)\, and TAB HUNTER AS TODD TOMORROW (!!)\, THIS MOVIE IS TOO GOOD TO MISS!!  We are still unsure as to whether or not we will be able to present this film in its original format complete with Odorama\, but we can assure viewers that there will be smells.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a special performance by jazz group The Dopolarians. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nThe Dopolarians is a collective of veteran avant-garde jazz musicians\, including some of the legends of the genre. With the exception of bassist William Parker\, the entire group hails from various points across the southern United States. The group formed in 2018 primarily around the friendship of pianist Chris Parker and influential percussionist Alvin Fielder to record their debut record\, Garden Party. Garden Party is accessible — even hummable — improvised music with ever-present reference to the group’s southern roots. As a Jazz Times magazine reviewer puts it\, the group performs “a perfect balance of euphoric improvisation\, bluesy mettle\, and melodic composition that’s as edgy as it is infectious.” \nTragically\, following the initial session that gave birth to the group\, Alvin Fielder fell ill and passed away. Filling the drum chair now is one of Alvin’s beloved students\, Chad Anderson of Mississippi. The Dopolarians performance will serve as both an album release celebration and a tribute to Alvin — friend\, mentor\, and giant among jazz percussionists. \nThe Dopoloarians are William Parker (bass)\, Douglas Ewart (tenor saxophone)\, Chris Parker (piano\, Kelley Hurt (voice)\, Chad Fowler (alto saxophone and saxello)\, Chad Anderson (percussion)\, and special guest Marc Franklin (trumpet).

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists. \nThis series is in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. February’s performance features Canadian fingerstyle guitarist Calum Graham in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nAt only 26 years old\, Calum Graham has already enjoyed a career that would be the envy of most artists twice his age. He was recently named one of the World’s Top 30 Guitarists under 30 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. His signature playing style has enthralled millions of listeners on YouTube and Spotify\, which has led to tours across America\, Europe\, and China. Calum plays both the acoustic and harp guitar in his live set\, and his original melodies are guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings. His music embraces elements of folk\, world\, and blues — all built upon the foundation of the fingerstyle technique. “The most promising young guitarist I’ve seen. His command of the guitar is already really impressive!” — Andy McKee \nBorn in British Columbia and raised in High River\, Alberta\, Graham’s musical journey first took flight when he began playing the guitar at the age of 13. Five years later in the summer of 2010\, Graham attended the Canadian Guitar Festival and entered the prestigious Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition. Impressed with his original compositions\, the judges awarded Graham with a first place finish; a feat no other teenager has accomplished in the history of the festival. The clip of his winning performance has now generated almost 1 million hits on YouTube. \nAs Calum Graham’s name continued to grow in Alberta and across Canada for his guitar work and musicianship\, Graham proved that his talent was not limited to his extraordinary ability to play the guitar. In 2011\, Graham won the Canada’s Walk of Fame nationwide “A Song For Canada” contest based on his poetic acuteness. His winning poem was used in the song “I’m Here\, (A Song For Canada).” The song was performed by Chantal Kreviazuk and co-written by Graham\, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace) and Stephen Moccio (“I Believe”\, 2010 Vancouver Olympics theme song/”Wrecking Ball” – Miley Cyrus).”. “Calum’s entry resonated strongly among the judges. SUMMARY:Coalescent Saxophone Quartet in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Coalescent Quartet in a special performance in The Green Room. The program will feature varied works from composers Edvard Grieg\, Fernande DeCruck\, Zack Browning\, and Memphis-based Dr. Evan Williams from the faculty of Rhodes College. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nFormed in 2016\, the Coalescent Quartet explores the diverse saxophone quartet repertoire from traditional to contemporary works. Its members Nathan Bogert\, Michael Shults\, Nick Zoulek\, and Drew Whiting bring together years of combined chamber music experience and disparate pedagogical backgrounds to present sensitive\, exciting\, and distinctive performances. In addition to being active performers\, the Coalescent Quartet are dynamic educators. Its members have taught at Ball State University\, Silver Lake College\, the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire\, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh\, the University of Wisconsin Whitewater\, the University of Memphis\, and Oakland University. Collectively\, the quartet has presented master-classes across the country\, including at Kent State University and the Ohio State University. As champions of new saxophone quartet repertoire\, in its short lifespan the quartet has commissioned composers such as Ted King-Smith and Martin Bresnick\, and arranged music by Evan Ziporyn for saxophone.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Carmen Jones
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Otto Preminger and based on an Oscar Hammerstein musical\, in turn based on the opera Carmen\, CARMEN JONES tells the story of Carmen Jones \, who works in a parachute factory in North Carolina during WWII.  Carmen is arrested for fighting with a co-worker who reported her for arriving late for work. Foreman Sgt. Brown assigns young soldier Joe to deliver her to the authorities\, much to the dismay of Joe’s fiancée Cindy Lou\, who had agreed to marry him during his leave.  Carmen Jones features a Saul Bass title sequence and Diahann Carroll (Dominique Deveraux in the hit television show Dynasty)! \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)
