The Atlanta-based\, Chicago-raised Cann made appearances on Maysa’s Smooth Sailing (2004) and India.Arie’s Testimony\, Vol. 2: Love & Politics (2008)\, but her résumé stretched out to a remarkable length during the early 2010s. Her sweet\, gentle voice was featured on the Foreign Exchange’s “Laughing at Your Plans\,” Zo!’s “All Is Well with Love\,” and Khari Cabral’s “Get Back\,” all highlights of their respective parent albums. This month’s guest: Jonathan Butler\, Grammy-winning contemporary jazz musician from South Africa. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \n\nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Jonathan Butler:\nThe youngest of 13 children\, Jonathan Butler grew up in Cape Town\, South Africa\, ruled by Apartheid and segregation. Butler began his singing career at age 7\, releasing his first album in 1973 and winning the Best New Artist Grammy in South Africa the following year at age 12. He made history by being the first black artist played on white South African radio while earning three gold records (“Please Stay” went double gold and “I Love How You Love Me” went gold) in 1975 as he became a teenager. \nMore than a decade later\, Butler moved to London\, England after signing with Jive Records and released his first album internationally. The self-titled set went gold in 1987 in the United Kingdom and in the USA. He received Grammy nominations for Best R&B Song for his R&B-pop vocal hit “Lies” and for Best Jazz Song for the instrumental “Going Home.” His genre-busting material earned songwriter’s awards and received abundant airplay in multiple radio formats: pop\, urban\, contemporary jazz\, adult contemporary and gospel. Butler’s 2004 album\, Surrender\, went gold in South Africa where he remains a superstar. \nHe launched the Jonathan Butler Foundation in his native country to fund music education programs that give children the purpose to overcome a life of drugs and poverty just as he did. The music and arts programs serving South African children ages 4-17 operate with the mission statement\, “Purpose kills addiction.”

SUMMARY:Sweet Soul Restorative: Yoga & Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Treat yourself to the gift of restorative yoga with live music. This workshop focuses on the breath\, supported yoga poses\, and gentle somatic movements. Live music\, vibrational sound\, and healing touch will sustain and deepen your experience. \nPay what you can (suggested donation $10) \nYoga postures (asana) are supported with blankets\, blocks\, and bolsters to achieve total relaxation of the body/mind. These supported yoga poses are coupled with gentle somatic movements that will alternately stimulate the brain and relax the body to move toward balance. Somatic movements focus on the developmental movement patterns we experienced as growing infants. They will be primarily performed on the floor and on all fours. \nPhysiologically these movements reconnect the neural pathways in the brain\, allowing us to gain more body/mind awareness. Long deep breathing and other rejuvenating breath work will be integral to the practice. The healing vibrational sounds of live music will support the practice. A wide range of ancient instruments from around the world combined with modern looping technology are used to weave an atmospheric soundscape. The music works twofold: first\, it gives the mind a place to focus as the body begins to relax and open; second\, the vibratory nature of this music is very balancing. \nAbout the instructor/musician:\nSean Murphy and Anne J. Froning formed Being:Art in 2004. Since then\, they’ve traveled throughout the United States designing and teaching dance\, yoga\, and live music workshops. Anne is a multidisciplinary artist: dancer\, visual artist\, teaching artist\, and registered yoga teacher with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience. Sean is a professional musician\, composer\, instrument maker\, teaching artist\, and dance musician with over 20 years performing experience.

SUMMARY:CALL TO MUSICIANS — A Change of Tone: In/Out of Sync
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of live music\nProposal Submission Period: July 9  – September 10\, 2019\nEvent dates: April 18th –  21st\, 2020 \nCrosstown Arts is challenging musical artists to create a body of new work for A Change of Tone\, an exhibition of live music\, applicable to musicians of all genres\, scheduled for April 18th – 21st\, 2020. \nThis four-part\, four-day event will feature a selection of four musical acts\, one act per night\, who will “exhibit” their music for a listening audience over loudspeakers in one venue as they simultaneously perform it in another\, creating a non-traditional listening experience. \nDuring this event\, there will be two live feed interconnections between The Green Room music venue at Crosstown Arts\, and Crosstown Theater: the first feed will be an audio feed for the audience in The Green Room to listen to\, as the musicians\, out of sight\, perform their original work live in the empty Crosstown Theater auditorium. The second feed will video-capture The Green Room audience for the performing musicians in the Theater to see on a screen\, so that they may virtually watch and technically perform\, for their audience. The audience in The Green Room will be informed in advance that they will be watched by the performing musicians in the theater\, creating an immersive environment for the listening audience in which the performers’ new music might achieve a vivid and seemingly living omnipresence. \nSimilar to the experience of being inside of a haunted house or abandoned building\, this spectral approach to auditory perception will be\, among other things\, a sonic experiment in vulnerability. It will be an attempt to enhance and heighten the audio-sensory experience for the listener\, and perhaps will intensify the presence and impact that music can have when our fight-or-flight response is instinctively activated\, giving the sounds we hear the power to demand our full attention. \n\nSubmission Process: \nThe theme of this music exhibition is “In/Out of Sync.” What does it mean to be “in or out of sync”–with something\, with nothing\, with anything…with everything? In what ways do you feel or observe things as being in or out of sync with one another\, and what approach would you envision yourself taking\, musically\, to express these feelings and interpretations as they present themselves within your reality? The goal of A Change of Tone is to invite artists to sonically and musically explore the varied interrelations between technical musical themes and humanity: what we experience\, observe\, believe\, and imagine within the realms of our intellectual capabilities.  \nMusicians who wish to apply to this musical showcase must submit an original proposal (one or more pages preferred) that explains their vision for the new music they intend to create as it pertains to the “In/Out of Sync” theme. Artists may take any approach to this\, from topics based in society and everyday life\, to the larger natural world and universe\, and may do so through both the lens of these guiding ideas or beyond them.  \nSubmissions are due on Tuesday\, September 10 at noon. \nApply here \n\nInstructions if Selected: \nThis music exhibition is limited to 4 participants. The submissions will be randomly selected by a unique\, curated lottery process\, by which every proposal will be considered; the primary contact(s) for the four selected proposals will be notified of their acceptance and given a performance time slot on Tuesday\, September 24\, at 12pm.  \nMusicians will then use the nearly 7-month period before the A Change of Tone: In/Out of Sync event to create a set of new music\, no less than 45 minutes and no longer than 2 hours in length\, with the intention of performing it live during one of the 4 performance timeframes (randomly assigned). The time slots are as follows*: \nSaturday\, April 18\, 2020 –  7:30pm\nSunday April 19\, 2020 –  7:30pm\nMonday\, April 20\, 2020 –  7:30pm\nTuesday\, April 21\, 2020 –  7:30pm \nSelected participants are encouraged to start creating their sonic and musical works as soon as possible to allow for adequate time for creation and rehearsal. If you are selected\, please do not perform or submit proposals for work that was created prior to this open call (do not submit work created before July 9\, 2019). \nMusicians may also conduct an artist talk or meet-and-greet in the Crosstown Theater auditorium after their performance. This component is optional\, but highly encouraged. \nEach performance will be recorded by a sound engineer and will be given to the artist free of charge\, to use for any purpose. The artists will receive both a stereo room recording and an unmixed\, multitrack version of their performance so that they may create their own personal mix of their performance. All artists selected to perform at the event will also receive: a $125 stipend for each musician within a group of 2 or more individuals; or a $200 stipend for solo musicians.  \nMusic stands will be provided at the venue for artists who would prefer to reference their work during their performance (this is highly encouraged as we are not expecting artists to perfectly memorize such newly created work within the 7-month timeframe). \nCopyright infringement and cover versions are not allowed at this event. \n*If you are selected\, we will try to accommodate as much as possible for any scheduling conflicts\, though unfortunately\, due to the numerous events being hosted by Crosstown Arts in our various venues throughout the year\, this could mean that you may have to forfeit your participation\, and we will have to make another lottery selection in your place. If this happens\, we hope that you will still feel inspired to create new work based on the themes you chose to explore in your proposal. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \n\n\nFacilitators: Aubree Penney & Lance Layman\n\nPresenting artists: Zahria Cook\, Cheryl Nolan\, Aisha Raison\, and Alex Paulus\n\n\nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Lead singers/songwriters Houston and Cyrena Wages fuse honky-tonk edge with anthemic melodies reminiscent of the 70’s Laurel Canyon scene\, and soulful ballads that nod at the nature that makes Memphis\, Memphis. Now based in East Nashville\, the two children of a small-town judge elicit an unapologetic thumbprint and a “fresh take on a nostalgic sound.” \nPrevious credits include opening for hero Emmylou Harris\, being voted “Top 3 Best Local Bands” by the Nashville Scene\, being named “Country Rock Revivalists” by Pandora Radio\, and landing a track in a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. \nDecember 2018\, The Lost Wages released their debut EP\, “Rose Motel.” The band’s breakout video for single\, “Drunk and Forget\,” is in rotation now on CMT. The band is currently completing their second project\, produced by fellow Memphian Jesse Cole\, which will be released this summer.

If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis presents a screening of Roll Red Roll. \nAt a pre-season football party in small-town Steubenville\, Ohio\, a heinous crime took place: the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team. What transpired would garner national attention and result in the sentencing of two key offenders. \nBut it was the disturbing social media evidence uncovered online by crime blogger Alex Goddard that provoked the most powerful questions about the case and about the collusion of teen bystanders\, teachers\, parents\, and coaches to protect the assailants and discredit the victim. \nAs it painstakingly reconstructs the night of the crime and its aftermath\, Roll Red Roll uncovers the engrained rape culture at the heart of the incident\, acting as a cautionary tale about what can happen when teenage social media bullying runs rampant and adults look the other way. The film unflinchingly asks: “Why didn’t anyone stop it?” \nFeaturing a talkback panel with Memphis Area Women’s Council following the film. \nTrigger warning for details of real-life sexual assault. A counselor will be on site provided by Memphis Area Women’s Council.

With Tim Carey\, Annette Funicello\, boxer Sonny Liston\, Frank Zappa\, Victor Mature\, Toni “Hey Mickey” Basil\, Dennis Hopper\, Jack Nicholson\, rescuing mermaids\, attempted suicide (which was what The Monkees were literally doing with their career by making this film)\, the Nguyen Van Lem execution footage\, a swami\, and a lot of analogies about how The Monkees felt trapped. \n\nWatch the trailer

At the end of the week\, students are given the opportunity to sell their wares at Memphis Zine Fest. \nTaught by local artist and Zine Fest curator Erica Qualy. \nWe provide all of the basic supplies they’ll need to get started\, they just need to bring their ideas. Tre’s father Furious Styles\, a Vietnam War veteran\, helps teach him right from wrong in an environment where gang life sometimes trumps solid ethical values. Tre’s friends run the gamut from a future athletic superstar to his religiously devout girlfriend and friends who fall into a life of crime and gangs. In choro\, the flavors of immigrant mazurkas\, polkas\, and waltzes are seasoned with smoky tango and simmered in an irresistible Afro-Brazilian groove. From Heitor Villa-Lobos to Darius Milhaud to Stan Getz to Walt Disney\, choro has inspired artists of all stripes and is a window into an entire musical world. Catchy and melodic – easy to appreciate – yet bursting with kaleidoscopic virtuosity that fascinates the listener\, choro has been well-described as “classical music played with bare feet and callused hands.” \n\nAbout Choro das 3:\nA Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father\, Choro das 3 began to play as a band in 2002. Flutist Corina doubles on piccolo\, trading lead and counterpoint roles with Elisa on bandolim (Brazilian mandolin)\, tenor banjo\, clarinet\, and accordion; Elisa also writes and performs at the piano. Lia anchors the harmony and provides the bass lines so essential to choro with the violão de sete cordas (7-string guitar). Their father\, Eduardo\, supplies the rhythmic heartbeat with the pandeiro (Brazilian frame drum). \nChoro das 3 shares a tradition that’s over 100 years old\, one that continues to attract new composers\, musicians\, and audiences. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Dehanza Rogers\, Tom Cho\, and Marcus Tate\, Aubree Penney\, Baishui Gan\, and Melanie Manos will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

Curated by Crosstown Arts resident artist Aubree Penney. \nFeatured artists: Sully Allen\, Jesse Butcher\, Zahria Cook\, Dehanza\, Mulanre “Eddie” Gan\, Mary Jo Karimnia\, Melanie Manos\, Jeremiah Matthews and Kayla Selby\, Natalie Minik\, Alex Paulus\, Cat Peña\, Nick Peña\, Terri Phillips\, Corkey Sinks\, Joey Slaughter\, Jessica Weaver\, Terri Weaver\, and Tad Lauritzen Wright. \nEngaging with the architecture and history of Crosstown and the residues of both its predecessor Sears and its subsequent transformation\, group exhibition Negative Space operates within unused miniscule spaces in public areas of Crosstown Concourse. Numerous holes\, nails\, and small architectural elements pockmark walls and columns\, bearing evidence of past usage. Negative Space invites current Artists in Residence at Crosstown Arts as well as local community artists to embrace these underutilized spaces for art display. Negative Space offers artists and audience members an opportunity both to explore the Concourse and to consider scale and intimacy in public art display.
