SUMMARY:The Lost Wages at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by Americana band The Lost Wages in The Green Room. \nTicket: $10 advance | $15 day of show\nDoors at 7 pm | show at 7:30 pm \nThe Lost Wages is a sibling-led Americana band from Memphis\, TN. Lead singers/songwriters Houston and Cyrena Wages fuse honky-tonk edge with anthemic melodies reminiscent of the 70’s Laurel Canyon scene\, and soulful ballads that nod at the nature that makes Memphis\, Memphis. Now based in East Nashville\, the two children of a small-town judge elicit an unapologetic thumbprint and a “fresh take on a nostalgic sound.” \nPrevious credits include opening for hero Emmylou Harris\, being voted “Top 3 Best Local Bands” by the Nashville Scene\, being named “Country Rock Revivalists” by Pandora Radio\, and landing a track in a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. \nDecember 2018\, The Lost Wages released their debut EP\, “Rose Motel.” The band’s breakout video for single\, “Drunk and Forget\,” is in rotation now on CMT. The band is currently completing their second project\, produced by fellow Memphian Jesse Cole\, which will be released this summer.

SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha: Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Tad Lauritzen Wright\, Eden Wiseman\, Ori Dvir\, Joey Slaughter\, and Natalie Minik will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style.\n\n\nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

SUMMARY:Screening of Roll Red Roll
DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis presents a screening of Roll Red Roll. \nAt a pre-season football party in small-town Steubenville\, Ohio\, a heinous crime took place: the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team. What transpired would garner national attention and result in the sentencing of two key offenders. \nBut it was the disturbing social media evidence uncovered online by crime blogger Alex Goddard that provoked the most powerful questions about the case and about the collusion of teen bystanders\, teachers\, parents\, and coaches to protect the assailants and discredit the victim. \nAs it painstakingly reconstructs the night of the crime and its aftermath\, Roll Red Roll uncovers the engrained rape culture at the heart of the incident\, acting as a cautionary tale about what can happen when teenage social media bullying runs rampant and adults look the other way. The film unflinchingly asks: “Why didn’t anyone stop it?” \nFeaturing a talkback panel with Memphis Area Women’s Council following the film. \nTrigger warning for details of real-life sexual assault. A counselor will be on site provided by Memphis Area Women’s Council.

SUMMARY:Songwriters in the Round feat. D'Monet\, Jeremy Stanfill\, and Lisa Mac
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Songwriters in the Round\, featuring D’Monet\, Jeremy Stanfill\, and Lisa Mac. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nAbout the musicians:\nNurturing her vocal gifts from the tender age of four\, along with developing her ear for the piano by 7\, D’Monet now is a seasoned veteran. D’Monet has shared her soul from New York to Los Angeles\, but it’s only natural she makes Memphis\, Tennessee the home of her “Futuristic Soul.” \nJeremy Stanfill is a born and bred Memphian with music in his bones. When he’s not drumming for Star & Micey\, Jeremy writes and sings shootin’ the moon-style Americana songs of heartbreaking honesty that evoke that difficult space where the sadness of wandering lost is the same feeling as the joy of freedom. \nLisa Mac was born and raised in Memphis. You’ll know it within minutes of meeting her or hearing her music\, a seamless blend of blues\, pop\, and the city’s signature gritty hip-hop beats. She’s creating her own kind of soul. It’s unsurprising\, considering that she grew up singing in church\, and says she first discovered her voice when she got connected with the Gospel community as a teen.

SUMMARY:Choro das 3
DESCRIPTION:Choro das 3 — the “First Family of Choro” — returns to Memphis on their 7th U.S. tour for an unforgettable evening of joy\, excitement\, and megachops in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nBrazilian choro music is a living gem — the “roots music” of that country and the mother of the samba and bossa nova we love. In choro\, the flavors of immigrant mazurkas\, polkas\, and waltzes are seasoned with smoky tango and simmered in an irresistible Afro-Brazilian groove. From Heitor Villa-Lobos to Darius Milhaud to Stan Getz to Walt Disney\, choro has inspired artists of all stripes and is a window into an entire musical world. Catchy and melodic – easy to appreciate – yet bursting with kaleidoscopic virtuosity that fascinates the listener\, choro has been well-described as “classical music played with bare feet and callused hands.” \n\nAbout Choro das 3:\nA Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father\, Choro das 3 began to play as a band in 2002. Flutist Corina doubles on piccolo\, trading lead and counterpoint roles with Elisa on bandolim (Brazilian mandolin)\, tenor banjo\, clarinet\, and accordion; Elisa also writes and performs at the piano. Lia anchors the harmony and provides the bass lines so essential to choro with the violão de sete cordas (7-string guitar). Their father\, Eduardo\, supplies the rhythmic heartbeat with the pandeiro (Brazilian frame drum). \nChoro das 3 shares a tradition that’s over 100 years old\, one that continues to attract new composers\, musicians\, and audiences. The group has received accolades all over Brazil and abroad for virtuosity and creative energy\, and has played a significant role in the preservation\, renovation\, and modernization of Choro. \n\nAbout West Tennessee Choro:\nThis concert is a collaboration between Crosstown Arts and West Tennessee Choro\, a non-profit corporation based in the Memphis area created to share the popular instrumental musical styles of Brazil with music lovers of all ages through education\, participation\, and presentation.

SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha: Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Dehanza Rogers\, Tom Cho\, and Marcus Tate\, Aubree Penney\, Baishui Gan\, and Melanie Manos will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse Presents Delinquency in Cinema: FREDERICK WISEMAN’S JUVENILE COURT
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. This week: JUVENILE COURT \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nOriginally released in 1973 and made by acclaimed documentary film maker Frederick Wiseman\, JUVENILE COURT shows the complex variety of cases before the Memphis Juvenile Court: foster home placement\, drug abuse\, armed robbery\, child abuse\, and sexual offenses. The sequences illustrate such issues as community protection vs. the desire for rehabilitation\, the range and the limits of the choices available to the court\, the psychology of the offender\, and the constitutional and procedural questions involved in administering a juvenile court. Come see how horrible the Memphis juvenile “justice” system was in the 1970s\, and then lament how absolutely nothing has changed! \nFilm makers Joann Self Selvidge and Sarah Fleming will be at the screening to share information about their currently in-production documentary Juvenile\, which tells the stories of people who’s lives have been touched by the juvenile justice system. SUMMARY:The Music of Dexter Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Tribute to jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon featuring Art Edmaiston (tenor sax)\, Patrick Fusco (piano)\, Neal Bowen (acoustic bass)\, and Jeff Burch (drums). \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 6:30 pm | performance at 7 pm\nLocation: Crosstown Arts East Atrium \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\n \nAbout Arthur Edmaiston:\nSaxophonist Arthur Edmaiston was raised in Northwest TN and came to Memphis to pursue a degree in Jazz Performance in 1990. The Bluff City has been his home since then. \nSoon after settling in\, Art found guidance in two teachers who would direct his career path and help develop his personal understanding of the saxophone. Allen Rippe\, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and the legendary musician and teacher Lannie McMillan mentored Edmaiston through the early ’90s\, providing chances to grow and offering support when needed. \n\nCountless hours of practice and late nights jamming with the finest musicians in Memphis and around the world has brought Edmaiston to where he is today — a Grammy-nominated seasoned professional of stage and studio. Over the years\, Art has played for thousands of tourists on world-famous Beale Street\, backing up Preston Shannon\, FreeWorld\, Ruby Wilson and more recently\, Susan Marshall and John Paul Keith. Edmaiston has recorded and toured internationally with such artists as Gregg Allman\, Al Green\, Bobby “Blue” Bland and the International Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater\, as well as performing on-stage with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world\, such as Stevie Wonder\, Dr. John\, Ray Parker Jr. and Justin Timberlake. \nAlways active in the studio\, there are several new recording projects featuring Art coming soon from the Joe Restivo 4\, the Love Light Orchestra\, Marc Edgar Stuart\, Marcella & Her Lovers\, and others. Arthur Edmaiston has established himself as a leader in music in Memphis and is grateful to be sharing his gift with all who will listen. \n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

SUMMARY:Stitched Finale
DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 28 from 1-3 pm to celebrate the STITCHED exhibitions at Crosstown Arts. This will be the last time you’ll be able to see the shows. We’re going to announce the viewer’s choice awards\, debut the community quilt made during Maria Shell’s workshop in June\, and acknowledge all of the artists and volunteers who made these shows a reality. \nAnnouncement of the Viewer’s Choice awards will be at 2pm. We will be asking artists to take their quilts down during the celebration. Artists are encouraged to take pictures of your quilt and post them on the Stitched2019 Facebook page as a remembrance of the events. If you will be picking up a quilt for another person you will need to have written permission from that person. \nBLUE show posters will be available at the event. \nIf you have a quilt in the show and are unable to attend the event\, your quilt will be available for pick up from July 29-August 2 from 12-4pm\, Tuesday through Friday at Crosstown Arts. Note that the galleries are closed on Monday.
