SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Time and Place
DESCRIPTION:Lee Moses (1941-1998)\, a music prodigy\, is considered one of the greatest unknown musicians among Baby Huey or Sixto Rodriguez (Sugar Man). He was part of a soul scene in Atlanta between the ’60s and the ’70s. His one album\, Time and Place (1971)\, did not take off. During his time in New York\, Moses played with greatest\, including Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His music has now garnered a community of appreciation. Songs such as “Bad Girl” was used in the 2014 French film House of Tolerance\, and “If Loving You Is A Crime” was used in 2013 American film The Teacher. What makes his story remarkable is there’s not much to be found on Lee Moses. Even in his hometown of Atlanta\, there are no physical traces of him. The locations where Moses once performed no longer exist. TIME AND PLACE aims to connect the time of Lee Moses with the place Atlanta is becoming now.  Simon David/2019/76 minutes \nDirector Simon David will be available for a Q&A after the film. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \n

SUMMARY:New Memphis Colorways Album Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special album release party with Crosstown Art’s own Paul Taylor. He’s releasing his first full-length album — “The Music Stands” — under the nom de plume\, New Memphis Colorways. And he’s assembled a very interesting cast of musical characters for the evening — Susan Marshall & Reba Russell on background vocals\, Pat Harrington on electric guitar\, David Collins on keyboards and auxiliary sounds/textures\, Rob Douglas on bass\, and Kyle Neblitt on the drums. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nSome of Paul’s friends and musical associates have already chimed in about “The Music Stands”: \n“Paul has really come into his own here. Although the songs are deceptively simple\, there’s a world inside each track. These little musical creations are killer. They will creep up on you. They’ll reach out and grab you. It’s all very soulful. And a little magical too. Kinda proggy. Kind of indie. And utterly impossible to describe. I dig it.” — Chuck Prophet \n“Paul’s out of his damn mind. He conjures more original musical ideas in 12 bars than most musicians do with entire albums. ‘The Music Stands’ finds him\, as always\, accessing strangenesses and welding the unexpected with a singular vision.” — Cory Branan \nHaving put out three releases under his birth name\, including “Open Closed” (2007) & “Share It” (2009)\, both on Makeshift Records\, as well as self-released The Old Forest Trail EP (2015)\, Paul has now embarked on a new project called New Memphis Colorways. New Memphis Colorways more fully embodies the wide-ranging influences from his storied career as a Memphis musician. This moniker debuted with his self-released Old Forest Loop EP (2018) and continues with the forthcoming “The Music Stands\,” due out on 1/31/2020. \n

SUMMARY:Film Screening — Suppressed: The Fight to Vote
DESCRIPTION:A new film by Robert Greenwald \nSuppressed: The Fight to Vote is a new documentary by Robert Greenwald (director of Outfoxed\, Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price\, and Making a Killing: Guns\, Greed\, & the NRA)\, weaves together personal stories from voters across the state of Georgia to paint an undeniable picture of voter suppression in the 2018 midterm election where Stacey Abrams fought to become the first Black female governor in the U.S. The issues Georgians faced included polling place closures\, voter purges\, missing absentee ballots\, extreme wait times and a host of voter ID issues – all of which disproportionately prevented many students and people of color from casting their ballots. \nSuppressed: The Fight to Vote features experts\, poll watchers and everyday Georgians speaking to the reality of voter suppression and the threat it poses in 2020. In a race that was ultimately decided by 54\,723 votes\, the film exposes how the basic constitutional right to vote to continues to be under siege in America. If your vote wasn’t important\, they wouldn’t try to suppress it. \nPresented by Team Upstream\, a social justice group from Church of the River\, Memphis\, TN.  Team Upstream concentrates on voter registration\, apathy\, and suppression. \nRefreshments at 6 pm | Film at 6:30 pm

SUMMARY:The Dopolarians in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a special performance by jazz group The Dopolarians. \nTickets: $15\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nThe Dopolarians is a collective of veteran avant-garde jazz musicians\, including some of the legends of the genre. With the exception of bassist William Parker\, the entire group hails from various points across the southern United States. The group formed in 2018 primarily around the friendship of pianist Chris Parker and influential percussionist Alvin Fielder to record their debut record\, Garden Party. Garden Party is accessible — even hummable — improvised music with ever-present reference to the group’s southern roots. As a Jazz Times magazine reviewer puts it\, the group performs “a perfect balance of euphoric improvisation\, bluesy mettle\, and melodic composition that’s as edgy as it is infectious.” \nTragically\, following the initial session that gave birth to the group\, Alvin Fielder fell ill and passed away. Filling the drum chair now is one of Alvin’s beloved students\, Chad Anderson of Mississippi. The Dopolarians performance will serve as both an album release celebration and a tribute to Alvin — friend\, mentor\, and giant among jazz percussionists. \nThe Dopoloarians are William Parker (bass)\, Douglas Ewart (tenor saxophone)\, Chris Parker (piano\, Kelley Hurt (voice)\, Chad Fowler (alto saxophone and saxello)\, Chad Anderson (percussion)\, and special guest Marc Franklin (trumpet).

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents The Harder They Come
DESCRIPTION:WITH A PIECE IN HIS HAND\, HE TAKES ON THE MAN! The epochal cultural moment that first brought reggae to the international stage\, made Jimmy Cliff a star\, and demonstrated how music can change the world. Fifty years on\, THE HARDER THEY COME is still electric with the feeling of discovery. This SCARFACE-y blend of crime drama and musical tracks Cliff’s country-boy-in-search-of-fame through Jamaica under the guises of laborer\, recording artist\, convict\, ganja dealer\, and outlaw folk hero. Before THE HARDER THEY COME\, the collective perception of a “foreign film” was limited to the Bergmans and the Kurosawas of the world. This game-changer forever blew those doors off — and it still hasn’t lost a drop of its cool\, its edge\, or its way of making you dance. — American Genre Film Archive — Perry Henzell/1972/109 minutes/Rated R \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Blue Collar
DESCRIPTION:BLUE COLLAR was Paul Schrader’s debut as a director\, and making the movie reportedly literally drove him insane. BLUE COLLAR is a caper about three auto workers (Richard Pryor\, Harvey Keitel\, and Yaphet Kotto) who rob their union and unexpectedly uncover an illegal loan operation and ties to organized crime. BLUE COLLAR is about corruption\, the impossible grind of the working class\, powerlessness\, and most definitely\, the use of racial difference as a weapon by the oppressors against the oppressed. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series: Calum Graham
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The Cutaway Acoustic Guitar Series\, a monthly concert series showcasing internationally acclaimed guitarists. \nThis series is in partnership with the Little Rock-based Argenta Acoustic Music Series. February’s performance features Canadian fingerstyle guitarist Calum Graham in an intimate\, solo performance. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nAt only 26 years old\, Calum Graham has already enjoyed a career that would be the envy of most artists twice his age. He was recently named one of the World’s Top 30 Guitarists under 30 by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. His signature playing style has enthralled millions of listeners on YouTube and Spotify\, which has led to tours across America\, Europe\, and China. Calum plays both the acoustic and harp guitar in his live set\, and his original melodies are guaranteed to pull at your heartstrings. His music embraces elements of folk\, world\, and blues — all built upon the foundation of the fingerstyle technique. “The most promising young guitarist I’ve seen. His command of the guitar is already really impressive!” — Andy McKee \nBorn in British Columbia and raised in High River\, Alberta\, Graham’s musical journey first took flight when he began playing the guitar at the age of 13. Five years later in the summer of 2010\, Graham attended the Canadian Guitar Festival and entered the prestigious Canadian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition. Impressed with his original compositions\, the judges awarded Graham with a first place finish; a feat no other teenager has accomplished in the history of the festival. The clip of his winning performance has now generated almost 1 million hits on YouTube. \nAs Calum Graham’s name continued to grow in Alberta and across Canada for his guitar work and musicianship\, Graham proved that his talent was not limited to his extraordinary ability to play the guitar. In 2011\, Graham won the Canada’s Walk of Fame nationwide “A Song For Canada” contest based on his poetic acuteness. His winning poem was used in the song “I’m Here\, (A Song For Canada).” The song was performed by Chantal Kreviazuk and co-written by Graham\, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace) and Stephen Moccio (“I Believe”\, 2010 Vancouver Olympics theme song/”Wrecking Ball” – Miley Cyrus).”. “Calum’s entry resonated strongly among the judges. His poem celebrates the cultural mosaic that is Canada. He has captured the diversity of this country – something that we as a nation are renowned for and proud of.” – Stephan Moccio

SUMMARY:Opening Reception — Here Is Where We Meet
DESCRIPTION:On view through April 19 \nHere Is Where We Meet will feature large-scale paintings and works on paper by Dennis Congdon and Susan Lichtman. \nThe artists’ styles are decidedly distinct and yet united by the deliberate attention given to the way in which a painting is constructed. Congdon makes playfully saturated works with the use of a stencil template. Lichtman is a figurative painter of domestic spaces who understands the practice of painting to be a “life of the mind.”  Here is Where We Meet looks at how each artist riffs on the language of painting as well as the written word. \nThroughout the exhibition\, writers and poets will be invited to respond to the visual works.  Curator Laurel Sucsy states\, “I am inspired by the relationship between painters and poets and how artists working in each discipline use the other for inspiration and structure.” \nIn the month of April\, the gallery will host a poetry night during which a collection of responses will be presented to the public. \nPlease join the artists and curator for a discussion on Saturday\, Feb 29th at 1:00 in the West Gallery. \nCurated by Laurel Sucsy\nThis LifeWorks exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Don Pelts Memorial Foundation. \nAbout Dennis Congdon:\nDennis Congdon holds a BFA in Painting from RISD and an MFA from Yale. In 1983\, he won the Prix de Rome and became a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome.  He has taught painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Tyler School of Art and has been on the faculty at RISD since 1984. In 2003\, he received a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship\, and in 2010\, he received RISD’s John R. Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching.  \nCongdon’s work has been exhibited widely. Since 2013\, he has had three solo shows in New York City: CUE Foundation in 2013 (curated by Stanley Whitney\,); Horton Gallery in 2014 ; and “Congeries” at Zieher Smith and Horton Gallery in 2015. In 2015\, his large work “Hummocks” was included in the James and Audrey Foster Prize Exhibition at the ICA Boston (curated by kijidome). \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nAbout Susan Lichtman:\nSusan Lichtman is a figurative painter of domestic spaces\, working out of her home studio in southeastern Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Gurf Morlix in The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by singer-songwriter Gurf Morlix. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7pm | Performance at 7:30pm \nThere was a time\, and not that long ago in the grand scheme of things\, when Gurf Morlix didn’t really think of himself as a songwriter. A guitar player\, sure — armed from the get-go with the dead-aim chops and cool-handed confidence of a natural-born gunslinger. Later on\, he took on the mantle of producer too\, parlaying his myriad strengths as an ace sideman into an equally lauded career helping a veritable who’s who of the most formidable poets in Americana find their “growl” and cut their deepest grooves on record. But songwriter? That handle took him a bit longer to fully embrace. \nNevermind the fact that his perspective on the matter was inevitably skewed by his years of working with such grading-curve-blowing talents as Blaze Foley\, Lucinda Williams\, Butch Hancock\, Robert Earl Keen\, Mary Gauthier\, and Ray Wylie Hubbard: a high bar is a high bar\, and Morlix\, for all of his famed minimalist aesthetic both onstage and in the studio\, has never been one to cut corners when it comes to quality. \nThrough the years\, Morlix also produced such artists as Lucinda Williams\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, Tom Russell\, Butch Hancock\, Ian “Mac” McLagan\, Slaid Cleaves\, Michael Penn\, the Pinedogs\, and the Setters. His numerous recording credits include works by Jerry Lee Lewis\, Buddy Miller\, Peter Case\, Bob Neuwirth\, Trish Murphy\, Marvin Etzioni\, Andrew Hardin\, Jim Lauderdale\, Don Walser\, Michael Penn\, Linda McRae\, Danny Tate\, and Mojo Nixon\, among others.
