SUMMARY:Olivia Lichterman Solo Show
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Lichterman will hold a solo show of her paintings. at 430 N. Cleveland. Her work will be on view from 6-9 pm on Friday\, April 26 and 10 am-1 pm on Saturday\, April 27. \nAbout the artist:\nTechnically\, Lichterman is an art student because she will not graduate from University of Tennessee until May\, however\, that is where the word “student” begins and ends in connection with her driving creative force.  A recipient of the 2018 Kimberly D. Iles Art Award\, Lichterman creates  2D  paintings\, and drawings – as well as 4D “time-based” art. \nHer innovative thinking is readily apparent to casual observers as well as art patrons in her choices of media. Even for works on canvas and paper\, she terms them drawings regardless of media used. Multiple layers of media are the preferred choice to offer texture and dimension. The result is stunning.

SUMMARY:SPINS feat. DJ Witnesse
DESCRIPTION:A live monthly DJ series at Crosstown Arts \nThis month: DJ Witnesse (disco/funk/roller boogie)\nCost: $5\nLocation: The Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nThe SPINS series will feature music as diverse as the City of Memphis. Each month\, a rotating line-up of DJs will play everything from old-school Hip-Hop and House to Ultra Lounge and Afrobeat. There’s something for everyone to enjoy. So\, come chill. Come hang. Come party! \n\n\nAbout DJ Witnesse: \nMemphis music historian and sound designer Jason Sims (aka DJ Witnesse) has 25 plus years of experience rocking dance floors\, including a stint as an instructor for the acclaimed Redbull Music Academy. Armed with an affinity for Funk and R&B and a vast knowledge of Delta music\, Sims has acted as a core operator for many local staples including Lord T & Eloise\, Kingpin Skinny Pimp\, Al Kapone\, and even the Memphis Grizzlies.\n\nAs a music archaeologist specializing in Memphis’ Disco/Funk/Roller Boogie heyday of the 1980s\, Sims takes the dance floor on a journey of discovery\, respectfully co-mingling artists well known from that era (such as The Bar-Kay’s and Willie Mitchell) while unearthing vinyl magic from the treasure trove of forgotten Memphis recording studio gems left to gather dust and cobwebs through time and circumstance. These lost musical archives tell the story of Memphis as music mecca\, post-Stax and post-Elvis\, connecting the dots of the landscape through the 45s and LPs that moved house parties\, roller rinks\, and dance floors from Midtown to Melrose and beyond.

SUMMARY:Sweet Soul Restorative: Yoga with Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Treat yourself to the gift of Restorative Yoga with Live Music. This workshop focuses on the breath\, supported yoga poses\, and gentle somatic movements. Live music\, vibrational sound\, and healing touch will sustain and deepen your experience. \nFree and open to the public. This event is made possible by Lifeworks. \nMore about the event:\nDuring this yoga practice\, feel the body and mind completely relax and tune into the bliss.\n\nYoga postures (asana) are supported with blankets\, blocks\, and bolsters to achieve total relaxation of the body/mind. These supported yoga poses are coupled with gentle somatic movements that will alternately stimulate the brain and relax the body to move toward balance. \nSomatic movements focus on the developmental movement patterns we experienced as growing infants. They will be primarily performed on the floor and on all fours. Physiologically these movements reconnect the neural pathways in the brain\, allowing us to gain more body/mind awareness. Long deep breathing and other rejuvenating breath work will be integral to the practice. \nThe healing vibrational sounds of live music will support the practice. A wide range of ancient instruments from around the world combined with modern looping technology are used to weave an atmospheric soundscape. The music works twofold: First\, it gives the mind a place to focus as the body begins to relax and open; second\, the vibratory nature of this music is very balancing. \nAbout Being: Art: \n\nSean Murphy and Anne J. Froning formed Being:Art in 2004. Since then\, they’ve traveled throughout the United States designing and teaching dance\, yoga\, and live music workshops. Anne is a multidisciplinary artist: dancer\, visual artist\, teaching artist\, and registered yoga teacher with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience. Sean is a professional musician\, composer\, instrument maker\, teaching artist\, and dance musician with over 20 years performing experience.

SUMMARY:The Mystic
DESCRIPTION:On the last Tuesday of each month\, join Crosstown Concourse neighbors and friends for The Mystic. \nSo\, what is The Mystic?\nThe Mystic is a catalyst; through music\, story\, silence and dialogue\, we hope to strengthen our attachment to hopes and dreams. In the mystic\, diversity is a prerequisite for all creativity\, which is why Crosstown Concourse is the perfect home. In The Mystic\, the world is far-better served by different beliefs than it could ever be if limited by rigid uniformity. \nAnd if this doesn’t rock your gypsy soul\, the goal of The Mystic is to not feel better but get better at feeling. \nThe Mystic is hosted by a rotating panel including Rabbi Micah Greenstein\, Chris Miner\, Dr. Scott Morris\, Dr. Sonia Walker and Kirk Whalum. \nAll guests welcome to linger for conversation following our program.

Amidst the racial tension in New York City\, this Jewish Ivy League graduate and black Mississippi blues man made an unlikely pair\, but their musical stylings perfectly aligned. \nAfter a chance encounter with members of U2 and a celebrated debut record\, the duo rose to international acclaim from their Harlem street corner. But as quickly as they were discovered\, their meteoric rise was cut short when Mr. Satan mysteriously disappeared.  The result is an odyssey 23 years in the making that captures a miraculous journey of friendship\, heartbreak\, and the transformative power of music. \nThis is the Memphis Premiere of this award-winning documentary. \nConcessions will not sold inside the theater. Pop-a-roos (inside Crosstown Concourse) will be selling a combo of popcorn\, candy bar\, and a drink for $5. They also sell giant slushies for $3. \nWatch the trailer

SUMMARY:Black Cream with Abe Partridge
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by Memphis-based soul group Black Cream with opening act Abe Partridge (a singer/songwriter from Alabama). \nTickets: $5\nDoors open at 7:30 pm | Performance at 8 pm \n\nAbout Black Cream:\nBlack Cream is a newly formed conglomerate of some of Memphis’ musical prodigies. Lead guitarist and good soul TO Crivens flies high with his attention to feel and detail during his solos that make the room stand still. \nThe Band is anchored by bassist\, Dr. Derek Brassel\, the coolest cat in every room\, is unofficially certified as the groove doctor and his bass lines are spell binding. On drums and vocals\, Courtney Barnes displays jaw-dropping skill and vocal finesse\, oftime harmonizing with his brother\, Chris Barnes\, who rounds out the Black Cream team on vocals and percussion with the charismatic presence of a baptist preacher and the vocal abilities of your favorite soul crooner. \n\nAbout Abe Partidge:\nAbe Partridge is a singer/songwriter and visual folk artist from Mobile\, AL. People have said that Abe Partridge sounds older than his chronological age\, and there’s a very good reason for that – he’s packed a lot of living into his 37 years. \nThose experiences\, ranging from the earthy to the surreal\, the spiritual light to the depths of depression\, come together with gripping intensity on Partridge’s second full-length album\, Cotton Fields and Blood for Days. Over the course of ten songs\, this troubadour draws listeners in with a combination of southern gothic storytelling and a dark humor reminiscent of the late Townes Van Zandt – delivered in a gravelly tone that conjures up images of Tom Waits in his barstool warming days.

SUMMARY:Art Quilts Unfolding
DESCRIPTION:Informative and inspiring presentation by Martha Sielman\, the Executive Director of Studio Art Quilt Associates\, the world’s largest organization dedicated to the art quilt.  Sielman is the author and curator of “Masterworks: Abstract & Geometric\,” a traveling exhibit which comes to Crosstown as part of STITCHED.  She will talk about the Art Quilt Movement\, based on the research for her highly-acclaimed book\, Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation. \nFifty years is both a long and a short time. The quilting industry has changed.  Sewing machines have changed. Computers and the internet have changed. Time and technology have influenced the evolution of art quilting as it has grown to embrace thousands of makers worldwide. These include leading artists who are featured in her book such as Jean Ray Laury\, Nancy Crow\, Michael James\, Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry\, Katie Pasquini Masopust\, and many more  from around the world. \nThis event is in conjunction with Stitched: Celebrating the Art of Quilting — a festival at Crosstown Arts with art exhibitions\, public quilting workshops\, and a Gathering of the Guilds showcase. Stitched runs from May 10-July 28\, 2019.
