DESCRIPTION:Join Luna Nova Music musicians Daniel Gilbert (violin)\, Sabrina Laney Warren (soprano)\, and Brian Ray (piano) for Summer Thoughts\, a program of works by J.S. Bach\, Alfred Schnittke\, Claude Debussy\, Einojuhani Rautavaara\, and Samuel Barber. \nLuna Nova Music supports performances of a wide range of twentieth century classics\, music of established living composers\, and premieres by emerging composers. With concerts\, masterclasses and private instruction\, Luna Nova Music maintains a strong commitment to the education of performers and listeners\, and to the cause of new music in educational institutions and beyond. \nPay what you can \nDoors open at 7 pm | Performance starts at 7:30 pm \nProgram\nJ.S. Bach: Suite No. 1 for Cello\, Prelude (arr. for violin)\nAlfred Schnittke: Suite in the Old Style\, Op. 30\nClaude Debussy: Images\, Series II\nEinojuhani Rautavaara: Summer Thoughts\nSamuel Barber: Knoxville: Summer\, 1915\, Op. 24 \n\nAbout the performers:\nDaniel Gilbert is a free-lance violinist in Memphis. He plays regularly with PRIZM\, the Memphis Symphony\, Luna Nova\, and at the Orpheum Theater. He also teaches at the Bellevue School of Performing Arts. Daniel began violin studies with his grandfather Noel Gilbert when Noel was the Music Director of the Germantown Symphony. This early influence planted dual seeds of a love of music and of the violin. Daniel is grateful to Noel for sharing so much of his time and for his patient teaching. Daniel is married to Lori\, also a violinist and they have two sons\, Isai and Calum. \nPraised as a “powerful and finely nuanced soprano” (Rhein-Neckar Zeitung) with “seemingly unlimited vocal possibilities\,” (Augsburger Allgemeine) Sabrina Laney Warren has international acclaim and has performed opera\, concert\, and oratorio works throughout North America and Europe. Solidifying herself as an international artist\, Sabrina has performed as a guest artist with the Festival Durance Luberon in France\, the Eutiner Festspiele in Germany\, the Deutsche-Amerikan Musik Fest in Germany\, and the Differdange International Festival in Luxembourg. As the soprano soloist in the European tour of Ein deutsches Requiem\, her performance was lauded as “a soft-lined\, expressive consolation song full of vocal grace” (Augsburger Allgemeine). She also received critical acclaim for her performance of Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, “It was a rare pleasure to hear Warren sing and a pleasure to note the ease in which she soared to the high notes and then plunged into resonant low notes…and after she had committed vocally and emotionally to Agee’s lyrics she had the audience completely in her thrall” (The Oak Ridger). \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson\, and he currently studies with Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s guests: Kortland and Kameron Whalum. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \n\nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).

SUMMARY:Songwriters in the Round feat. Don Bryant\, Susan Marshall\, and Reba Russell
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Songwriters in the Round at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\, featuring Don Bryant\, Susan Marshall\, and Reba Russell. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 7:30 pm \nAbout the artists:\nDon Bryant began singing when he was 5. He joined his father’s family vocal group\, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. The group went secular\, singing pop at WLOK on Dick “Cane” Cole’s popular show. After parting with the DJ\, they took a very real step toward careers when\, as the Four Kings\, they began fronting Willie Mitchell’s band. \nBut the group broke up and Willie anointed Don Bryant as his leading man. Don could also write songs. He was still in his teens when\, in 1960\, Willie was producing the 5 Royales and Don handed him “I Got To Know.” The 5 Royales put it on wax. Don was hot in the spotlight and in the writer’s room. \n\nAs Willie Mitchell carved out his place at Hi Records\, Don was close by. He wrote material for other Hi artists\, including Janet & the Jays and Norman West. Around 1970\, Willie put Don with the Hi label’s newest act\, Ann Peebles\, who burst on the scene with “Part Time Love.” Don looked at this slight young lady and penned “99 Lbs” for her. The relationship warmed\, they co-wrote the hit “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in 1973 and were married the following year. \n\nMemphis artist Susan Marshall began her career Off-Broadway as a leading soprano in the Rep-Company Light Opera of Manhattan. Shortly after moving back to Memphis in 1990\, she began fronting rock-soul band The Mother Station and was signed to a record deal with EastWest / Atlantic Records. \n“Better Off Alone” (a song she co-wrote with Austin Carroll) was recorded by American Idol’s Katherine McPhee for her 2007 self-titled debut which reached #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart. Her songs have also been recorded by international blues divas Ana Popovic and Reba Russell to name a few. \nSusan has toured all over the world as part of the Afghan Whigs\, as well as with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band. She is also known for her studio and/or stage work with a wide range of superstars; Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Alvin Youngblood Hart\, Solomon Burke\, Jim Lauderdale\, Steve Earle\, and Kirk Whalum to name a few. \n\nReba Russell is a name synonymous with the Memphis Music scene. She is a published songwriter\, vocalist\, guitarist\, backing vocalist\, bandleader\, and producer\, as well as a touring and recording artist. \nReba Russell and her band tour throughout the United States and Europe and have released eight independent albums that showcase songwriting and delivery. She is also a highly respected Memphis studio/session vocalist. \nThe list of credits for recording artists that Reba has performed backing vocals in session for is vast. A few notable credits are; U2 (When Love Comes to Town\, BB King/ Bono). Class of 55 Homecoming featuring: Johnny Cash\, Roy Orbison\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Carl Perkins. Huey Lewis and the News\, album; Soulsville. Numerous local/blues/regional acts including Tracy Nelson\, Jim Dickinson\, Sid Selvidge\, and Lucero.

SUMMARY:Malcolm Holcombe feat. Nancy Apple at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join folk singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe and Nancy Apple for a special evening of music at the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10\nDoors open at 7 pm | Performance starts at 7:30 pm \n\nAbout Malcolm Holcombe:\n\n“Malcolm Holcombe grew up in western North Carolina\, home to some of the planet’s oldest mountains and some of America’s deepest musical traditions. Radio and TV fueled Malcolm’s musical passions as a kid\, and music became even more important after he lost both his parents relatively young. \nHe toured with bands and landed in Nashville\, where he took up an inconspicuous station at the back of the house – the very back – at Douglas Corner\, one of the city’s best singer/songwriter venues. Stories began to circulate about the mysterious dishwasher with the subterranean voice and oracle-like talent. Sadly so did stories of wildly inconsistent behavior – profound sweetness crossed by bouts of stunning abrasiveness. \nHe flirted with an official music career. But his stunning debut album made for Geffen Records was abruptly shelved\, producing melodrama that only exacerbated Malcolm’s drinking and depression. A business that once had a place for complicated genius turned its back on him\, and he teetered near the edge. \nMoving back to the North Carolina hills proved a powerful tonic. Holcombe let in help where before he’d pushed it away. With deep faith in God and a commitment to his art\, Holcombe repaired himself and his career. \nAnd that’s a pretty good nod to the effect of hearing Holcombe sing. If you’ve not seen him in a live setting\, this is what you have to do. His presence is spooky and timeless\, as one imagines it was like to see Son House or Leadbelly. No emotional stone is left unturned. \nWhile you plan for this important experience\, collect Malcolm Holcombe albums… He is cryptic\, demanding\, polarizing\, bold\, passionate and free\, a combination badly needed in our time of infinite trivia. He’s even more interesting for having made a remarkable journey of recovery and discovery.” — Craig Havighurst\, Nashville

SUMMARY:Memphis '69 After-Party at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us after the screening of Memphis ’69 for an after-party with the full lineup of Sons of Mudboy at The Green Room. Memphis ’69\, a concert documentary shot in Memphis over three days in June 1969\, will screen at 7:30 pm in Crosstown Theater (presented by Fat Possum Records & No Sudden Movements). After the film\, head to The Green Room for a concert by Memphis underground band\, Sons of Mudboy. \nMemphis ’69 trailer: https://vimeo.com/nsmcreative/review/334975563/25a06b906d \nThe after-party is free with movie ticket or $10 without. Movie tickets are $7 and available here or at the door. \nAbout the artists:<\nMudboy and the Neutrons\, the legendary underground band formed by Lee Baker\, Jimmy Crosthwait\, Jim Dickinson\, and Sid Selvidge left an indelible mark on Memphis music and the world beyond. As Sons of Mudboy (and actual progeny of the band members)\, Ben Baker\, Cody and Luther Dickinson (of the North Mississippi All Stars) and Steve Selvidge (of Hold Steady) carry on the tradition of song and musical craziness that was that band. The lone surviving Mudboy\, Jimmy Crosthwait is with them\, playing his 100 year old washboard to keep them on that path. Mudboy and the Neutrons were recently immortalized in Robert Gordon’s latest book Memphis Rent Party.

SUMMARY:Sharde Thomas Rising Stars Fife and Drum Band at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by the Sharde Thomas Rising Stars Fife and Drum Band\, featuring the granddaughter of famed fife player Otha Turner\, in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. DJ Andrew McCalla will be spinning records throughout night around the Rising Stars’ performance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7:30pm | Show at 8pm \n\nAbout the artists:\nNational Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow recipient and famed fife player Otha Turner— who founded the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band— loved telling the story of how his granddaughter Shardé Thomas simply strode up to him one day\, grabbed a cane\, and began blowing into it. Within a few years\, Thomas was filling in at recording sessions and performing with Rising Star at picnics. \nThomas is now an American singer and fife player in her own right within the vanishing American fife and drum blues tradition. She still makes her fifes by hand out of cane\, hollowing it out with a heated metal rod—just as Turner did. Within a region overflowing with musical talent\, they stand apart as authentic practitioners of one of the most unique forms of American music. She calls the band “Rising Stars” because\, she says\, that’s what they are. \n

SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha: Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Wi-Moto Nyoka\, Stacy Kranitz\, James Walker\, and Valerie Houston will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

SUMMARY:Tameca Jones at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a performance by Austin-based soul singer Tameca Jones in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. Jones has made a name for herself as the “Queen of Austin Soul\,” blowing minds with her tasteful and vibrant interpretations of a diverse list of artists that include Tina Turner\, Nirvana\, Elton John\, Jimi Hendrix\, and more. \n\nDJ Andrew McCalla will be spinning soul records before and after the show.\n\n\n\nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \n\nAbout Tameca Jones:\nWhen local Austin\, TX\, native Tameca Jones opens her mouth and sings\, jaws hit ground. Her honeyed and powerful vocals have been captivating her hometown for a little over ten years. \n\n\n\n\n\nTameca made a name for herself as the “Queen of Austin Soul\,” blowing minds with her tasteful and vibrant interpretations of a diverse list of artists that include Tina Turner\, Nirvana\, Elton John\, Jimi Hendrix\, and more. The Austin Chronicle called her interpretations “sonic pretzels” that “juxtapose(s) crunchy jaggedness with her infectious\, honeyed voice.” Her WTF ability to go from soulful wailing to silky coos has won her devoted fans\, accolades\, and some high-profile situations opening for Austin superstars Gary Clark Jr.\, Max Frost\, Bob Schneider\, and other big touring acts. She received major love from Billboard Magazine for her white-hot performance at the 2015 Austin Music Awards\, where she paid tribute to late beloved musician Ian McLagan alongside legends like Steven Van Zandt\, Charlie Sexton\, Alejandro Escovedo\, and Patty Griffin. Billboard said she “raised the roof\,” while The Austin Chronicle called her performance “showstopping.” \nGuitar deity and fellow Austinite Gary Clark Jr.\, who faithfully attended Tameca’s shows whenever he was in town\, asked her to sing on the song “Wings” for his latest album\, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. Rolling Stone called the song a “slinky duet\,” while Andy Langer for Esquire Magazine called the song one of the best songs in the month of September and noted that “the tweaky processing of Austin soul starlet Tameca Jones’ voice adds an early-Parliament-like trippiness.” \nTameca Jones is set to release her highly anticipated debut EP in spring 2019. There is little doubt that she will soon be the next big name to break out of Texas.

By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, soul\, and hip hop and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. The astronomical term “blueshift” indicates an object’s moving closer toward the observer. Blueshift aims to bring concert music and art out of the concert hall and into the Memphis community.\n\nLucky 7 Brass Band\nComprised of some of the baddest of the bad musicians in Memphis\, the Lucky 7 Brass Band has formed a raw\, powerful sound that must be heard to be believed. Whether soul\, rock\, rap\, or pop\, the Lucky 7 Brass Band always brings the party\, so come get lucky!\n\n\n926 – Stax Music Academy Alumni Band\n926 are the singers and musicians who have graduated from Memphis’ world-renowned Stax Music Academy and now work as professional musicians. They have graced concert stages throughout the country and the world\, including Australia\, Italy\, England\, France\, Germany\, New York City’s Lincoln Center\, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center\, and Smithsonian Museum Festivals\, and here at home at Levitt Shell\, B.B. SUMMARY:Citizen Cope
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert by soul singer-songwriter Citizen Cope on the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater on Tuesday\, June 18. \nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 8 pm\nTickets: $41 — purchase on Eventbrite\n$1 from each ticket sale will be donated to charity \nAbout Citizen Cope’s latest album\, Heroin & Helicopters:\nAsk him how he knew it was time to record a new studio album\, and Clarence Greenwood\, the trailblazing artist and producer better known as Citizen Cope\, has a simple answer: “It was time.” \nCope has built an entire career on trusting his gut and following his muse\, and if his new album\, ‘Heroin & Helicopters\,’ is any indication\, his instincts are sharper now than ever before. As technically innovative as it is emotionally resonant\, the record arrives at a uniquely challenging moment in modern American culture\, when profound political polarization and social divisions seem to grow deeper by the day. Rather than dwell on our differences\, though\, Cope tunes in to what unites us here\, drawing on everything from Chuck Brown and The Beatles to Randy Newman and Bill Withers\, aiming his unique brand of urban-folk inwards to reflect on the personal journeys we all undertake to embrace ourselves despite our flaws. \nWhile ‘Heroin & Helicopters’ feels particularly timely\, the record’s themes have been fixtures of Cope’s music since the release of his self-titled debut in 2002. That album was the culmination of years of pursuing his passion. Cope got his musical start in DC before moving to Brooklyn\, where he wrote songs while supporting himself on the streets\, buying and selling concert and sporting tickets with a cast of characters outside arenas and stadiums. His music spread from fan-to-fan via word of mouth\, and over the course of time his songs have become the soundtrack of his fans lives.

SUMMARY:Pecha Kucha: Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Lucy McKeon\, Steve Bellin-Oka\, Nick Peña\, Pamela Allen\, and Pete Hoffecker Mejía will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style.
