SUMMARY:Makaya McCraven at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Chicago-based drummer\, producer\, and sonic collagist Makaya McCraven in the Green Room on Thursday\, March 21. \nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 7:30 pm\n$15 at the door | $10 advance (purchase on Eventbrite) \n\nAbout Makaya McCraven:\nMakaya McCraven is a beat scientist. The bleeding edge drummer\, producer\, and sonic collagist is one of Chicago’s savviest cultural players and a multi-talented force whose inventive process & intuitive\, cinematic style defy categorization. \nFrench-born but raised in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts by expatriate musician parents\, McCraven studied Jazz at the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the mentorship of jazz luminaries Archie Shepp\, Marion Brown\, and Yusef Lateef\, and eventually went on to develop his chops in Chicago’s burgeoning scene. \nHis breakthrough album In the Moment was released with International Anthem Recording Co. (IARC) in 2015 and received widespread acclaim\, proving to be a dramatic statement by McCraven that quickly launched him into the vanguard of not only Internationally-known jazz artists\, but also a niche genre of next-wave composer-producers blurring the boundaries of jazz & electronic music. \nHis recent releases\, the DJ-style mixtape Highly Rare (IARC\,2017) as well as an internationally recorded Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape) (IARC\, 2018) have been well received globally\, leading to increased bookings in some of the world’s best clubs\, theaters\, and festivals alongside the likes of Corey Wilkes\, Bobby (Baabe) Irving (Miles Davis)\, Ari Brown\, and Bernie Worrell. \nMcCraven is currently on tour and most recently released Universal Beings\, a 2x LP album featuring an A-list of “new” jazz players from New York\, Chicago\, London & Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:The Mystic
DESCRIPTION:On the last Tuesday of each month\, join Crosstown Concourse neighbors and friends for The Mystic. \nSo\, what is The Mystic?\nThe Mystic is a catalyst; through music\, story\, silence and dialogue\, we hope to strengthen our attachment to hopes and dreams. In the mystic\, diversity is a prerequisite for all creativity\, which is why Crosstown Concourse is the perfect home. In The Mystic\, the world is far-better served by different beliefs than it could ever be if limited by rigid uniformity. \nAnd if this doesn’t rock your gypsy soul\, the goal of The Mystic is to not feel better but get better at feeling. \nThe Mystic is hosted by a rotating panel including Rabbi Micah Greenstein\, Chris Miner\, Dr. Scott Morris\, Dr. Sonia Walker and Kirk Whalum. \nAll guests welcome to linger for conversation following our program.

SUMMARY:West Philadelphia Orchestra at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:With a line-up of Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands\, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. \nDoors open at 7 pm | performance at 7:30pm\nTickets: $10 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThey began playing Romanian ballads\, Macedonian folk-dance songs\, Bulgarian wedding music\, and Klezmer in late 2006\, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds\, like jazz and classical\, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band\, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass\, they inspire audiences to hold hands\, gyrate\, howl\, and otherwise slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.

SUMMARY:The Music from the Hard-Bop Years (1955-1965)
DESCRIPTION:The students and faculty from The Memphis Jazz Workshop present The Music from the Hard-Bop Years (1955-1965). Featuring the music of jazz artists\, such as Lee Morgan\, Art Blakey\, Herbie Hancock\, Joe Henderson\, Cannonball Adderley\, Bobby Timmons\, Wayne Shorter\, and more. \nThis event is chaired by jazz pianist and educator Stephen Lee. Featuring Stephen Lee (piano)\, Gary Topper (tenor sax)\, Johnny Yancey (trumpet)\, Tyler Cain (acoustic bass)\, and Nygel Yancey (drums). \nDoors at 6:30 pm | performance at 7 pm\nTickets: $15 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\n \nAbout Stephen Lee:\nStephen Lee is a Memphis native who has come full circle.  His talent and love for the music carried him miles from home\, only to have him return with the whole-hearted desire to enrich and serve his home community.  Stephen found a passion for piano at the age of 8 and has never once looked back. \nWhile at the University of Tennessee\, he studied with jazz legend Donald Brown before moving to New York City to formally launch his career as a jazz artist.  The move to New York City served him well. It proved to be fertile ground\, providing him with access to many of the giants of jazz and landing him in some of the most hallowed venues in the country like Smalls\, Birdland and Iridium. During his tenure in the City\, he shared a stage with a litany of stars like Esperanza Spaulding\, Corcoran Holt\, Ulysses Owens Jr\, Billy Johnson\, Gregory Porter and highly lauded fellow Memphian Kirk Whalum. \nIn addition to his performance credentials\, he served as Musical Director for Manhattan’s Crenshaw Christian Center under the leadership of Dr. Fredrick Price (one of the most well-known names in ministry).  In New York\, he rounded out his studies with a Bachelor’s in Jazz Performance from City College and a Master’s degree in Education from Freed Hardeman University. \nUpon his move to Memphis in 2009\, the growth\, opportunities\, and accolades continued. In 2012\, Stephen received the Rhythm of Gospel Award. In 2013\, he was nominated for First Round in the Stellar Gospel Awards for his album debut\, Music in the Key of my Life.  In 2017\, he won the Steinway and Sons Top Teacher Award and the Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Award. \nEven still\, he moves forward in the spirit of service and humility\, firmly committed to the youth and music arts community in Memphis. He values the importance and impact of the arts for young people\, which understands firsthand. He says\, “Being connected to something you feel passionate about makes a huge difference in a kid’s life. \nLee is also Founder/CEO of the Memphis Jazz Workshop\, a non-profit organization committed to cultivating young musicians by providing learning and performance opportunities with professional artists while embracing Jazz as our regional art form. Memphis Jazz Workshop was formed under the umbrella of LeeJazzOmega. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center Supply Store for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Residency Filmmaker Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Crosstown Arts Residents Pierre Primetens and Matteo Servente as they screen some of their short films and discuss their process as filmmakers. \nDoors at 7 pm | screening & talk at 7:30 pm\nFree and open to the public\nLocation: Crosstown Theater \nFood/beverages are allowed inside Crosstown Theater\, and guests are encouraged to pick up a snack from one of Concourse’s restaurants. Stop by Art Bar and have a drink before the show. \n\nPierre Primetens \nPierre Primetens is an author and documentary filmmaker and has directed such titles as the autobiographical trilogy Un voyage au Portugal (A Trip to Portugal)\, Des vacances à l’Ile Maurice (A Journey in Mauritus)\, and Contre toi (Against You) about his estrangement from his mother’s family and their eventual reconciliation.  His latest documentary\, La fête des garçons (The Boys Ritual)\, is about a rite of passage in a remote village of northern Portugal. His movies have been presented in many French and international film festivals and broadcast on European television. He creates radio documentaries\, writes television screenplays\, serves on several cinema committees and leads screenplay\, film study\, and directing workshops. He is currently writing his first fictional feature film. \n“My sense of observation and an almost scientific rigor are essential in carrying out my projects.  I alternate between different working formats: I go to the site where I wish to film and observe the lifestyles of the residents there from an anthropological point of view\, complemented by periods of writing where I build a fictional narrative based on what I have observed and the material I’ve collected.” \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPierre Primetens will be screening: \nA TRIP TO PORTUGAL\nMy mother died when I was five years old. My father never spoke to me about her. Last year\, my mother’s family\, who is Portuguese\, tracked me down. I’m on my way to Portugal to see them\, for the first time in 20 years. \nHALF-BLOOD\nco-directing with Laetitia Mikles\nFranck heals horses with his hands. With his children\, he is loving and playful. With horses\, he is patient and delicate. But when it comes to talking to Zita\, he clams up. \n\nMatteo Servante \nItalian by birth and Memphian by choice\, Matteo Servente has been making independent films for more than 15 years. After studying in Italy\, France\, and Australia\, he moved to the US in 2008 and has since directed award-winning short films and documentaries. Matteo’s current projects include a narrative feature film called Nessun Dorma (No One Sleeps)\, a magical-realistic drama about a 10-year-old boy who drives across state lines in a stolen Trans-Am searching for a mermaid\, and the documentary A Legacy Suspended\, about his work with The Lynching Sites Project of Memphis. He is also involved in youth education as an elementary teacher and mentor for young filmmakers. \n“Making films is not only a wonderful opportunity but also a great privilege. Doing it in Memphis makes it a big responsibility.” \n \nMatteo Servante will be screening: \nDAMMI IL LA \nThe lives of three very different people become interwoven when Pietro stops what he’s been doing\, comes down off of his stilts\, breaks down\, and has to be put back together by Marguerite. \nWE GO ON\nTwo old gents whose numbers have been called up yonder are in hospice care. Their conversations ricochet around like a shootout in a fantasy factory\, as they both relish the last communication left to them.
