The album showcases his tasteful instrumental arrangements of a selection of classic compositions from the songbook of the great Stevie Wonder.\n\nJames Austin Jr is an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader who hails from Chicago\, IL. He has honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary jazz musicians including extensive study with Barry Harris\, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz educators of all time. James’ musical achievements include being honored as a featured performer and semifinalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. As a jazz artist\, Alex has performed and recorded with nationally recognized artists including Rachel Therrien\, Rahsaan Barber\, Stephen Anderson\, Jim Ketch\, and more. In 2022\, Alex was awarded first prize at the prestigious North American Saxophone Alliance’s National Jazz Artist Competition. They have performed as a soloist at esteemed events such as the JEN Conference\, North American Saxophone Alliance\, and the John Coltrane Jazz Festival\, and have recorded on the Summit Records label as a member of the 360 Jazz Initiative Ensemble. Their work as a performer and composer can be heard most recently on their debut album release “Portraits of a Silent Moment”.

In 2019\, he starred in his fourth stand-up special\, Alonzo Bodden: Heavy Lightweight\, which premiered exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.⁠\n⁠\nKIRK WHALUM⁠\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.⁠\n⁠

The longtime friends\, some of New York’s most accomplished string players\, gathered to play outdoors in parks and on street corners in upper Manhattan\, and their community stopped to listen. Through these casual outdoor performances\, they built a following in person and on social media\, connected with local businesses and residential enclaves\, and partnered with important neighborhood cultural centers for their first official performances. They witnessed firsthand the power of music to unite and inspire – all without playing a single note of the string quartet repertoire that has been held up as “standard” for hundreds of years. \nSince their inception in June 2020\, The Overlook has worked to effect permanent change in the “classical music canon” by developing a body of repertoire composed by BIPOC\, female\, and non-binary creators. The quartet has presented masterworks from the past by Florence Price\, Samuel-Coleridge-Taylor\, and Chevalier de Saint-Georges\, as well as works by living composers Trevor Weston\, Eleanor Alberga\, Carlos Simon\, Jessie Montgomery\, Shelley Washington\, Leila Adu\, Forbes Graham\, and many more. The Overlook has enjoyed collaborating with such artists as New York Philharmonic principal clarinetist Anthony McGill\, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline\, multi-Grammy nominee Curtis Stewart\, and noted visual artist Linda Sormin. To support their work\, the quartet has been awarded grants by the Eastman School of Music\, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, Bronx Council on the Arts and Local 802’s Music Performance Trust Fund. \nThe Overlook has developed and presented a new performance series “If the Stars Align” in Uptown-NYC\, with concerts at Washington Heights/Inwood cultural institutions including Hispanic Society of America\, Morris-Jumel Mansion\, Dyckman Farmhouse Museum\, Fort Washington Collegiate Church\, and United Palace Theatre. The quartet recently brought their mission to Lincoln Center at Kaufman Music Center’s “Musical Storefronts”\, Chamber Music NY at Bruno Walter Auditorium\, GatherNYC at the Museum of Arts and Design\, Symphony Space\, Fotografiska New York\, and Wave Hill. With a slide in her left hand and conviction in her voice\, Wise inhabits the lines that come next\, delivering them as a mystical incantation and a purposeful statement of fact. “No matter where I go y’all/I give them something real/People all over the world/Need that Mississippi feel.” \nThe Memphis band with songwriting collaborator Bob Buckley and Memphis legends Jim Spake and Tom Lonardo is always a fresh spin on the Wise and Wise/Buckley originals and arrangements of covers.

She played every instrument\, wrote every lyric\, and sang every vocal part herself. “I felt it necessary to have my hand touch every aspect of this collection of music\,” she says. “This was a deeply personal\, very physical experience to go through\, and it was imperative that I used my body as the vehicle to create every tone and texture of this project.”\n\nThe album resonates with the sounds of the South\, blending traditional instruments like the accordion and frottoir with contemporary production and electronic elements. Sungazer explores the human element of improvisation within the context of modern electronic music. Exciting\, hard-hitting\, and never predictable\, Sungazer creates music aimed squarely ahead into the 21st century. They released their sophomore EP entitled Sungazer\, Vol. 2  in 2019. \nOn October 11\, 2021 they released their debut full-length album\, Perihelion. The long-awaited debut LP explores time and the liminal spaces between jazz improvisation and modern electronic music aesthetics. Bold improvisations teeming with energetic melodies that alternate between husky subtones and brilliant multiphonic flourishes. Blues and spiritual music are an underlying influence in the original compositions as well as a touchstone throughout his solo journeys.\n\n\nHis personal creative approach to the soprano saxophone makes use of smeared notes\, pitch bends and tonal manipulations offering listeners an aural picture of abstract liberated instrumental expression unlike anything heard in mainstream music performances.\n\n\n\nJoining Art in his debut performance as a leader is a cast of talented musicians and artists who have contributed to his development throughout his thirty-plus years of professional work.

They are the daughters and back-up singers for their father\, the late great Rev. John Wilkins. The Wilkins Sisters were brought up singing in the church inspired by their mother (Betty Maxwell Wilkins) and father (Rev. John Wilkins) and mix gospel\, blues and R&B to make a music that is moving\, soulful\, and uplifting. As little girls they used to open for their father at services\, shows\, and picnics. Growing up they had their own groups and singing projects as well\, and Tangela\, the leader of the trio has had her own band\, Tan and The Violinettes\, for over 25 yearsThe daughters came back together about 10 years ago when they were asked to accompany their father on several songs on his award winning first full-length record\, You Can’t Hurry God\, on Fat Possum’s Big Legal Mess label. \nThe daughters called themselves 3D\, short for\, 3 Daughters\, when singing with their father. They went on to tour with him for the next 10 years entertaining crowds and festivals worldwide. For Reverend Wilkins’ second release\, Trouble\, recorded at famed Royal Studios and released by Memphis label Goner Records\, Rev Wilkins wanted his daughters featured more prominently and that’s exactly what he did. Trouble features the daughters ‘strong soulful vocal leads as well their warm\, distinctive harmonies. Upon their father’s untimely passing\, Tangela\, Joyce and Tawana decided to get back together to honor their father and continue the family tradition as The Wilkins Sisters.

Dame uses his visual arts background to bring additional texture to his overall aesthetic and live show production demanding rap music be respected as high art from the ghetto to the gallery. \n\n\nNegro Terror is the brainchild of Omar Higgins with the help of family and others. Before Omars untimely passing his wishes were for his family to keep it going (the band and other projects) if things take a turn for the worst. With new line up lead by brother David Higgins (Vox/Guitar) and a rotating roster of amazing musicians. \n\n\n

Each exhibition offers a distinct yet interconnected perspective on the human experience\, inviting visitors to engage with visually striking and emotionally resonant works. \nFrom the Ashes – Maritza Dávila-Irizarry\nIn From the Ashes\, celebrated printmaker Maritza Dávila-Irizarry transforms personal tragedy into artistic expression. In April 2024\, a devastating fire destroyed her printmaking studio\, consuming decades of artwork\, tools\, and treasured books. But from this loss\, Dávila has created an exhibition that tells a story of endurance\, recovery\, and community support. \nFeaturing both new and salvaged works\, From the Ashes integrates printmaking\, mixed media\, photography\, video\, and remnants from the fire\, preserving a moment in time while looking forward to renewal. A longtime educator and mentor\, Dávila’s work is deeply rooted in ancestry\, cultural memory\, and personal history. Through layered compositions of symbols\, geometric structures\, and organic forms\, she explores themes of womanhood\, family\, and identity. \nHer career has spanned decades\, including 36 years of teaching at Memphis College of Art\, where she influenced generations of artists. This exhibition stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to creativity—an act of rebuilding not just her studio\, but the artistic connections that have defined her life’s work. \nSupernatural Telescope – Danielle Sierra\nWith Supernatural Telescope\, Danielle Sierra presents a deeply personal and poetic reflection on memory\, love\, and spirituality. Inspired by the passing of her father\, the exhibition explores the unseen ways in which love\, grief\, and imagination intertwine. Sierra’s work is an invitation to peer through a lens that transcends time\, where the past and present merge in moments of beauty and loss. \nThrough evocative paintings\, Sierra uses layered imagery and symbolic elements to capture the emotional weight of remembrance. Organic forms blend with architectural and cultural motifs\, reflecting the ways in which personal history and artistic vision shape our understanding of the world. \nSierra\, a native of Avenal\, California\, earned her MFA from the University of Memphis and has established herself as an artist whose work celebrates identity and heritage. She has contributed to significant mural projects in Memphis and Philadelphia\, honoring diverse communities through large-scale public art. Supernatural Telescope continues her exploration of storytelling through visual expression\, offering viewers a glimpse into the delicate interplay between love\, legacy\, and faith. \nThe Colors of the Caribbean – Juan Roberto Murat Salas\nA celebration of culture and heritage\, The Colors of the Caribbean by Juan Roberto Murat Salas transports viewers into the vibrant landscapes of the Caribbean. Murat Salas\, a Cuban-born painter trained at the prestigious San Alejandro Academy of Arts in Havana\, brings the rich visual traditions of his homeland to life through bold colors and dynamic compositions. \nHis work incorporates themes of deities\, architecture\, dance\, flora\, and fauna\, drawing on centuries of artistic influence while infusing each piece with his personal vision. The exhibition pays tribute to the great masters of Cuban art\, including Wilfredo Lam\, Amelia Peláez\, and René Portocarrero\, while asserting a contemporary voice that speaks to both tradition and modernity. \nBeyond its celebration of artistic heritage\, The Colors of the Caribbean also reflects the challenges faced by artists from the Global South. For Murat Salas\, like many Cuban artists before him\, exile has played a role in shaping his creative journey. This exhibition marks his first major show in the United States\, providing an opportunity to share his vision with a broader audience and bring the energy and resilience of Caribbean art to Memphis. \nA Journey into the Shadows – Nelson Gutierrez\nIn A Journey into the Shadows\, Colombian-born artist Nelson Gutierrez confronts the realities of migration and displacement through a striking visual language of shadow and movement. Using three-dimensional cutout drawings illuminated by shifting projections\, his work creates an immersive experience that reflects the instability and uncertainty faced by those seeking a brighter future. \nThe figures in Gutierrez’s work appear to walk endlessly\, their forms dissolving into shifting masses of shadow. This interplay between light and darkness serves as a metaphor for the invisible struggles of displaced people—those whose identities blur as they move between places\, often unseen and unheard. His process involves hand-drawn figures that are laser-cut into sculptural forms\, which are then manipulated through projected light to create a constantly evolving visual landscape. \nGutierrez\, who holds an MFA from Chelsea College of Art in London\, has exhibited internationally\, with works that address sociopolitical themes through conceptual and multidisciplinary approaches.
