SUMMARY:Jessica Lund: Wreford
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts is pleased to present Wreford\, an installation of new work by Jessica Lund on view from August 17 to September 14\, 2013. Jessica Lund is a recent graduate of the University of Memphis’ MFA program. Her work explores memory through mapping and architectural space in the forms of drawings and large-scale installations. \nFrom the artist: \nWreford has been my landlord for the past two years. He rules with an iron fist over a complex of four multi-unit buildings. One of them housed my first-floor one-bedroom apartment. My interest for some time now has been in exploring memory through architectural space and mapping. A recent exodus of 1865 Poplar Avenue has refocused these ideas. \nThis work explores the symbiotic relationship between existing architectural structures and the personalities that inhabit them: \nWreford:  He charged me $2 to wheel my trashcan to the street. He looks like a Ken doll. \nMister:  My cat has moved with me five times in six years. He looks like a stuffed animal. \nThe Neighbors: They held the fence dividing our properties together with a garden hose. I never actually saw them. \nI spent July leaving Wreford’s\, toting boxes across midtown Memphis to a new residence. Cat fur tumbleweeds blew through the apartment as I slowly emptied it of belongings. It was gross and romantic. \nJessica Lund was born in 1986 in Florida and grew up in Alabama. She received her MFA at the University of Memphis and her BA at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She currently lives and works in Memphis\, Tennessee. \nView a full gallery of installation images here. \nPoster photo by Mim Brooks \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mancontrol with Madame Wee
DESCRIPTION:As much a performance-art project as it is an electronic “band\,” the duo known as >mancontrol< (local music scene vets Dave Shouse and Robby Grant) never fail to deliver a unique\, interactive show that defies convention and description. As a rule\, no two >mancontrol< gigs are the same\, musically speaking\, and the group refuses to play in traditional rock-club venues. Catch it if you can. — J.D. SUMMARY:Material Anthology
DESCRIPTION:July 17-August 11\, 2013\n\n\n\nMaterial was founded by Hamlett Dobbins and Julie Meiman in late 2004.  A 19’ x 16’ exhibition space set in the storefront on Broad Avenue in the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis\, Material takes its name from Montessori learning tools.  The space was built to provide emerging and established artists with an intimate\, clean space in which to share their work with Memphis’ growing arts community. The programming consists of monthly or nightly shows as well as artists’ lectures in connection with local colleges and universities. Material has served as a space for young artists to have their first shows\, as well as a place for established local and regional artists to test new ideas in a public forum. In addition to serving local artists\, Material has hosted artists from Birmingham to Tokyo.\n\nThis exhibition celebrates and commemorates Material Art Space’s inspiring and longstanding impact on the Memphis art community and its unprecedented run as an alternative space.  In May of 2013\, Material celebrated its 100th exhibition and in August it will host its final show as Hamlett Dobbins leaves for an eleven-month stay at the American Academy in Rome. The exhibition at Crosstown Arts will feature work by over 50 artists who exhibited at Material from 2004 through 2013. \nAmong the many artists who will contribute to the exhibition are Greely Myatt\, Mark Nowell\, Melissa Dunn\, Mel Spillman\, Bobby Spillman\, Rebecca Robert\, Elizabeth Alley\, Clayton Colvin\, Kathleen Perniciaro\, Douglas Degges\, Dwayne Butcher\, Tad Lauritzen Wright\, Adam Farmer\, Susan Maakestad\, Jonathan Auger\, James Inscho\, Clare Torina\, Jamie Harmon\, Holly Cole\, Pete Schulte\, Georgia Creson\, Alex Harrison\, Jordan Martins\, Maggie Kleinpeter\, Jeana Baungardner\, Joel Parsons\, Mary Jo Karimnia\, and Joshua Huyser.\nContact: Hamlett Dobbins  dobbinsh@rhodes.edu or Emily Harris Halpern Emily@crosstownarts.org

SUMMARY:Socially Awkward
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dwayne Butcher\nOn view at 422 N. Cleveland \n“Socially Awkward is an unaffiliated continuation of the recent Memphis Social exhibitions that took place the week of May 10th at various venues around the city. I was drawn to the word “social” more than anything in regards to this previous exhibition. The visual art in Memphis has historically been traditional and conservative and primarily consists of landscape\, figurative realism\, and still-life painting. There is so much more to the visual arts in Memphis than this\, especially in the context of social practices.Socially Awkward will feature video and installations from Jill Wissmiller\, Brooke White\, Coriana Close\, Terri Phillips\, and Georgia Creson. Each of their works are socially conscious pieces either from a environmental\, gender\, classism\, and/or political perspective. ” -Dwayne Butcher\n\nThe opening will take place Thursday\, May 30\, 2013 at 6-8pm and the exhibition will run through June 30\, 2013. There will be a short gallery talk with several of the artists immediately prior to the opening at 5:30 pm.If you have any questions please fell free to contact Dwayne Butcher at dwaynebutcher@gmail.com or Emily Harris Halpern at emily@crosstownarts.org. \nFacebook event page \nImage: Jill Wissmiller\, Rhinestone Cowboy\, Digital Video Projected on to a Glitter Screen

SUMMARY:Memfeast 4: V&E Greenline
DESCRIPTION:2013 Winner: Jeannie Tomlinson Saltmarsh: Are there fish in Lick Creek? \nPresented by Crosstown Arts in collaboration with Vollintine Evergreen Community Association and V&E Greenline \nSponsored by Commercial Advisors and Southern Sun Asset Management \nSOLD OUT \nLocally-sourced dinner catered by chef Miles McMath; music from Deering and Down; and artist presentations of proposals for public art projects for the Greenline. \n\nFEAST (Funding Emerging Artists with Sustainable Tactics) is an annual public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund emerging art makers. MemFeast is Memphis’ local version founded and facilitated by Crosstown Arts\, helping to rethink how the arts are financed and experienced communally. \nThe mission of MemFeast is to support a diverse cross section of contemporary artistic and social practices\, and to provide local artists with new opportunities to produce work that engages the community. Unlike many conventional grant programs\, MemFeast brings people together for a communal dinner and conversation centered on creativity and innovation\, where artists receive funding immediately and are enabled to make timely work. \nAt each MemFeast\, anyone from the community can buy a ticket for a locally sourced dinner\, along with drinks and a ballot to vote on the night’s presentations. During the meal\, a selected group of local artists make presentations of their proposed projects. At the end of the night\, the audience votes for their favorite idea and the project with the most votes is awarded $5\,000 (from the ticket sales and other sponsorships) to produce the work. \nCrosstown Arts will present the fourth MemFeast in collaboration with the V&E Greenline Committee and Vollintine Evergreen Community Association (VECA).  Local artists\, designers\, and community members are invited to submit proposals for site-specific public art projects along the V&E Greenline\, a 1.8 mile “linear park” and first “rails-to-trails” project in Memphis.  The trail stretches between the Sears building at N. Watkins & North Parkway\, to Springdale St & Vollintine Avenue\, and has intersections at Stonewall\, Evergreen\, McLean\, and Jackson. \nMemFeast 4 celebrates the V&E Greenline as a sustainable stimulus of community in midtown Memphis\, engaging a diverse range of users and uses both socially and geographically.  To learn more about the V&E Greenline visit http://www.vegreenline.org. \nThe MemFeast dinner will take place on May 18\, outdoors at the intersection of the V&E Greenline and Tutwiler in the Vollintine Evergreen Historic District. \nClick here to download PDF of this information and call for proposals\n \n

SUMMARY:Tales of Modern Rocketry Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of nine weeks in the fall of 2012\, the sixth-grade “Rocket Writers” of the new Gordon Science & Arts Academy met for a workshop with Nat Akin\, our director of outreach & education\, to compose creative work for the first book-length project of our new after-school arts program\, story booth.Tales of Modern Rocketry is the collection of science fiction stories dreamed up by these young writers\, each accompanied by an original illustration from artist Derrick Dent\, and introduced with a foreword by former NASA astronaut Dr. Rhea Seddon\, one of the first women selected for the Space Shuttle program. \nOn Thursday\, February 7\, Crosstown Arts celebrated this book release at a launch party with the families\, friends\, and faculty of Gordon Science & Arts Academy in our new performance and exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. After mingling over music and food\, the writers read excerpts from their stories to public applause. Then the book was officially unveiled to the student writers and the gathered audience\, and the young writers were on hand to sign copies of the book. \nThis book and event serve as the first public “picture” of the kind of collaborative\, creative work story booth intends to do with middle- and high-school students in the greater Crosstown community. If you’re a young person who might be interested in participating in our programs\, or an adult interested in volunteering to help with projects like this\, there’s more information here. \nThursday\, February 7\, 5 to 6:30 pm\n430 N. Cleveland \nMusic by DJ Siphne Sylve at 5 pm; Student readings at 5:30 pm; Book signing at 6 pm \nSee examples of artist Derrick Dent’s work at www.derrickdent.com. \nLearn more about Gordon Science & Arts Academy at www.gestaltcs.org/gordonscienceandartsacademy. \n

We were excited to recognize the artists and the community members who helped make this project happen. \nThe concept for Beacon was proposed by the artists at Crosstown Arts’ Memfeast 2 in April 2011 and was made possible with support from Memphians Harry Freeman and Sara Ratner. \nSpecial thanks to Sara Ratner and Harry Freeman\, Grinder Taber and Grinder\, Inc.\, Peddler Bike Shop and Outdoors\, Inc.\n\nMany thanks to the Fuel Food Truck\, Yolo and Dwayne Butcher for the food; and to Tout Lemon\, Jeremy Shrader\, Sean Murphy\, Jamie Harmon and Amurica photobooth\, Patrick and the drumline for entertainment\, and Andrew J. Breig for the beautiful photos of the event.\n\nArtists’ Statement \nBeacon is an eye-catching kinetic sculpture that moves dramatically in the natural wind and shines brightly with reflected sunlight. It is made out of 51 repurposed bicycle wheels. Beacon also draws attention to the developing Memphis Greenline\, which runs one block north of the sculpture. We want this sculpture to serve as a creative beacon\, arousing interest in Crosstown Arts and in the Crosstown neighborhood. \nHomepage photo by Karlyn Houcek\, kalrnyography studios \nPhotos by  Andrew J Breig\, Matt Futrell\, and Jamie Harmon

SUMMARY:MemFeast 2: Crosstown Public Art Projects
DESCRIPTION:FEAST is a recurring public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund emerging art-makers. MemFeast is Memphis’ local version founded and facilitated by Crosstown Arts\, dedicated to rethinking how the arts are financed and experienced communally. The original FEAST was conceived in Brooklyn in 2009. \nAt the second installment of MemFeast\, seven artists proposed public art projects for Midtown’s Crosstown neighborhood.  The most votes went to artist Robin Salant and her proposal to illuminate the Sears Crosstown building with colored solar lights. Learn more about Crosstown Lights at facebook.com/crosstownlights. \n \n\nPhotos by Christopher Reyes

SUMMARY:Robin Salant: Crosstown Lights
DESCRIPTION:Winning Project: Memfeast 2 \nFrom the Commercial Appeal: \nCrosstown canvas comes alive with color\nFrom Staff Reports\nTuesday\, September 20\, 2011 \n\nA large crowd on Friday night witnessed the artful lighting of the main body of the old Sears Crosstown building. \nScores of cars pulled into the parking lot on Cleveland near North Parkway for a different kind of tailgating event. \nNearly 300 windows form a large grid on the south side of the vacant building. About 40 windows in the middle were used by artist Robin Salant as a canvas for her colorful\, moving light\, all to the delight of onlookers. \nNext\, eyes will turn to the art deco tower at the front of the 1.4 million-square-foot building. \nSalant will light its windows with moving color starting at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. \nShe won a Crosstown Arts commission in a MemFEAST event to create art that brings attention to the planned redevelopment of the long-vacant building. \nFlipping the switch on the tower lights will be part of another event at Cleveland at North Parkway on Oct. 22.
