DESCRIPTION:The Withers Collection is hosting the official book launch and signing for Revolution in Black and White: Photographs for the Civil Rights Era by Ernest Withers on Tuesday\, Nov. 12 from 6-8 pm at Crosstown Theater. \nDoors open at 6 pm in the theater for a booksigning. There will be slideshow at 7 pm\, followed by a panel discussion at 7:30 pm with Richard Cahan\, Michael Williams\, and Rosalind Withers. Moderated by Emmy-nominated journalist and author\, Katina Rankin\, evening anchor for WATN-TV Local 24. \nThe event is free and open to the public. RSVP required. Printed or digital RSVP tickets MUST be presented at the venue. \nPlease be advised that there will be a documentary film crew recording this event. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\n\nErnest C. Withers was one of the most prominent African-American photographers of the civil rights era. During the course of his work\, he took thousands of photographs that document the civil rights movement―from the Emmett Till trial in 1955 to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. in 1968.\n\n\n \n\n\nWhat set his work apart was that he went beyond the political struggles to explain the civil rights movement that changed the country. Withers was primarily a local photographer\, working as a freelancer for the Memphis World and Tri-State Defender starting in 1948. His photographs of the everyday world―bridge clubs\, funerals\, people at work and play\, and street life―create a stunning record of what it was like to live in Memphis and the Mid-South. He was also a noted baseball photographer\, documenting Negro League baseball in Memphis\, and a noted music photographer\, taking thousands of photographs of jazz\, blues\, rock ’n’ roll\, and R&B performers.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis book combines this work for the first time and uses first-hand accounts of people who lived in the South to explain these transformative years. The photographs\, taken as bare-bones journalism\, rises to the level of fine art decades later.\n\n\n \n\n\nThey are also important examples of photojournalism\, documenting decades of struggle in Memphis and the Mid-South. They serve as an important missing link in the civil rights narrative.\n\n\n \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHORS\n\n\nRichard Cahan and Michael Williams are noted photo historians. They have teamed up to produce more than twelve books. Most are based on long-lost archives or photographic collections. Called “the eloquent archival sleuthing duo” by Booklist magazine’s Donna Seaman\, they have written award-winning books about photography\, art\, and history\, including two on Vivian Maier\, the reclusive nanny whose discovered photographic work has become a worldwide sensation.

DESCRIPTION:For their penultimate album on Stax Records\, Booker T. & the MGs stretched the boundaries of the Memphis Sound\, tackling the Beatles’ masterpiece LP\, Abbey Road. Using the newfound artistic freedom granted since Stax had split with Atlantic Records\, this is the band’s most complex and adventurous recording\, perfectly timed for the rise of FM radio and music that need not fit on one side of a 45. \nThe group also debuted a new look for Joel Brodsky’s iconic album cover\, trading in their matching mohair suits and manicured coiffes for bell-bottoms\, fringe jackets\, and scruffy beards. \nJoining series host Dr. Charles Hughes (Rhodes College) will be members of the MDs\, a Memphis-based Booker T. & the MGs tribute band that performed the entire McLemore Avenue album at the Stax Museum in 2017.  This October\, the band rearranged another Beatles classic\, Revolver\, for a capacity Crosstown Arts crowd. \nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:Big Blank Sketchbook: Long Stitch Bookbinding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Students will fold and sew through hefty paper cover material to make an 8 ½” x 11” page sized blank book. The book is sewn in an exposed sewing style from Germany\, the long stitch. The thread and sewing is visible on the outside of the spine\, creating a decorative element. This sturdy structure travels well and makes an excellent sketchbook or journal. We will also prepare a second book to take home and sew for skills reinforcement. Learn basic elements of hand book binding tools\, materials\, and techniques\, supplemented by handouts. Students leave the class with knowledge and skills to make more of these books\, with no need for heavy equipment. All skill levels welcome. No experience necessary. \nCost: $35\nIncludes materials to prepare and finish two blank books \n\nTools needed by students:\nBone folder\, Xacto knife\, 12” ruler\, pen for note taking\, needle tool / pin tool / awl \n\nAbout the instructor:\nRory Golden holds an MFA in Book Arts from the University of Alabama. He directed The Center for Book Arts in NYC\, where he founded a residency program for artists\, a letterpress poetry reading series\, and other seminal CBA artistic programs. His artist books are in prominent public collections nation-wide. Rory teaches book and paper arts studio and professional development workshops and has taught and lectured as a visiting artist at over 100 non profits\, college and universities\, and museums. Yashira was an inaugural participant in the Crosstown Arts Residency program. ANACRONTE: What on first instance appears to be a conflict between good and evil is actually a struggle within every one of us. We can choose to cope with evil and fight for our dreams or surrender to the will of others. Anacronte and the Sorcerers of Evil put humanity’s happiness to the test\, leaving us as both winners and losers. Anacronte was produced by Yashira Jordan and directed by Raul Koler and Emiliano Sette. \nIldikó Enyedi’s fairytale-like\, unconventional ironic film luminaire MY 20TH CENTURY was awarded the Camera d’Or at Cannes in 1989. On the eve of the 20th century\, two twin girls\, Lili the anarchist and Dóra\, a luxurious woman of loose morals\, along with Mr. Z.\, who loves them as an entity\, all reach the Hungarian border at the same time on board the Orient Express. Their story\, rushing under the spell of Edison’s inventions\, is a special ‘research of happiness’\, reclaiming the ‘mass murdering century’ from the restlessly changing world and the miracle of existence. Tarkovsky’s fabulous actor\, Oleg Yankovsky\, performs an unforgettable double with the young Polish actress Dorotha Segda. \n\nAbout Yashia Jordan:\nYashira Jordán was born in La Paz (Bolivia) in 1985. Shem made her first short film when she was 12. She studied Fine Arts in UNLP Argentina\, specialized in Film 2010. Director and Producer of the stop-motion short film DUBICEL. \nDirector of DIAMANTE in development her second film\, was selected to ISLAB\, in la ISLA del SOL\, LA PAZ Bolivia and in Volumetric Filmmaking Depthkit Though Works Arts – Art Residency in New York City 2019. Ross thinks melodically and lyrically\, while Ruiz-Lopez thinks in tones\, textures and colors. Combined\, their work is vibrant\, full of ebbing and flowing emotion; full of passion\, fear\, hope\, angst\, frustration\, humor — all the messy emotions comprising the worthwhile chaos of the human experience. Stylistically\, the songs take familiar Americana textures and bend them in surprising directions. With special guests Blueshift Ensemble. \nAudiences will be immersed in music performed live and surrounded by swirling nostalgic imagery that follows the narrative of each song. This performance features a special collaboration with Memphis-based contemporary chamber music group Blueshift Ensemble. New Don Lifted merchandise will be available for purchase\, as well as special-edition physical copies of the albums. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nProduction on his most recent album\, Contour\, began in Memphis in late 2015. In 2018\, the record was finished and mastered in Hollywood by Grammy Award-winning Engineer Mike Bozzi (Flower Boy\, Ctrl\, Good Kid\, Maad City\, To Pimp A Butterfly\, Damn\, Blankface LP). \n“Matthews is a multi-disciplinary creative with connections reaching deep into the Memphis art scene. Born in Memphis\, his musical style incorporates hip-hop\, alternative rock and electronic music resulting in emotionally vulnerable storytelling and eclectic production. A hot emerging artist\, Matthew’s work began to garner acclaim before he had completed his Bachelor’s in Fine Art at University of Memphis\, awarded the Deans and Department of Art Creative Achievement Award in 2015. In 2016\, he was awarded the Arts Accelerator Grant from Arts Memphis. His performances helped inaugurate Crosstown Arts’ new space in Crosstown Concourse and have been featured events at the Brooks Museum and Memphis College of Art. DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for special performance by Mighty Souls Brass Band. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nMighty Souls Brass Band\, a Memphis‐based rotating collective of composer‐players versed in a multitude of musical traditions\, isn’t a soul band\, nor is it a funk band\, a marching band\, or a swing band. And yet\, depending on where you catch them live\, you’ll hear all of those influences and more from around the globe. \nFor proof\, check the band’s debut album — Lift Up!\, on Blue Barrel Records — largely recorded live\, to catch the infectious synergy of the group. You’ll hear all of these influences\, but you’ll also hear the writing and arrangement talents of MSBB’s members\, who themselves composed ten of the album’s dozen tracks. This vigorously creative impulse to weave something new from the threads of various traditions is what makes Mighty Souls Brass Band a unique act even among brass ensembles. This is a band that knows where its roots lie\, but also where its branches are reaching\, far out into the world\, a world that seems invariably to express its deepest spiritual desires and celebrations through music. \nMighty Souls Brass Band is a group attuned to that desire\, that celebratory spirit. It’s a music that swings\, that soars\, that swoons — all of which is suggested by that profound\, that humble\, that most human of words: “Soul.”

SUMMARY:Big Blank Book: Traditionally Sewn Paper Case Bookbinding Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Students will fold paper into sections\, sew\, then adhere the book block into a stiff paper cover making an 8 ½” x 11” page sized blank book. The sections are sewn together in a traditional case binding sewing pattern\, resulting in a large sketchbook or journal. We will prepare a second book to take home and sew to solidify skills and knowledge. Learn basic elements of hand book binding tools\, materials\, and techniques supplemented by handouts. Students leave the class with knowledge and skills to make more of these books\, with no need for heavy equipment. Mercier plays Yoav\, a disaffected young Israeli who flees Tel Aviv for Paris to start a new life. \nDesperate to erase his origins\, Yoav sees becoming French as his only hope for salvation. Step one is to replace his language. From now on\, he will not utter a single word of Hebrew and his dictionary becomes his constant companion. His work at the Israeli embassy is a burden\, but studying for his naturalization test also has its pitfalls. And the young French couple he befriends has some rather strange ideas about how to help him. \nBased on writer-director Nadav Lapid’s own experiences\, Synonyms explores the challenges of putting down roots in a new place. Yoav’s attempts to find himself awaken past demons and open up an existential abyss in this tragicomic puzzle that wisely knows how to keep its secrets.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for a performance by Memphis-based jazz group\, L.A.P.D. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nComprised of four hard-working musicians from Memphis\, L.A.P.D. respects the city’s rich musical heritage while forging new ground\, all in the name of the groove. \nL.A.P.D. is Logan Hanna on guitar\, Arthur Edmaiston on saxophone\, Patrick Fusco on organ\, and Danny Banks on drums and cymbals. \nThe deep swing and tough grooves played by this band of professionals was honed through years of logging late nights in clubs and on tours around the globe. So much attention has been given to the study of the music recorded in the 1960s (sometimes referred to as “soul jazz”) that listeners will wonder if they have been transported back in time. \nL.A.P.D. presents music that harkens back to an era when there was always a Hammond organ in the nightclub and everyone came to have a good time. The beautifully complex instrumental tones and their authentic rhythmic feel for the organ-fueled soul jazz music of yesteryear will make you want to shout! \nThe eclectic repertoire consists of titles spanning several generations of music with all of it delivered in the classic organ quartet style made famous by Jack McDuff\, Lonnie Smith\, Lou Donaldson\, and Big John Patton. \nWhat sets L.A.P.D. apart is the arranging and composing skills of Patrick and Logan. Several original compositions are present in the band’s book as well as sly arrangements of familiar classic and modern rock radio staples. If you have ever wondered what the melodies of Jimi Hendrix and Soundgarden might sound like filtered through a greasy saxophone\, then L.A.P.D. has that and more in store for you.

DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for new work by Crosstown Arts resident artist Olaniyi R. Akindiya Akirash.\nOn view through Feb. 9\, 2020 in the East Gallery at Crosstown Arts \nArtist Statement:\nI wake in the depth of night. When I close my eyes\, I feel something is blocking my view. I can‘t breathe deep or stand up from my bed. It feels like something is holding me down. I try to turn my head right or left\, but it is impossible. I try to scream. I can’t find my voice. I think maybe I am dead\, but I still feel that I am breathing. The dead don’t breathe. \nI start to pray as millions of questions pump up my mind. I ask myself\, have I done well in this world? What should I have done better? All the while my bed and pillow turning to a swimming pool of sweat. \nThen suddenly a breeze blows and everything changes. I become myself again. I wake up. I am in a 6’ x 9’ rectangle with a metal rods and a door padlocked. I look at my right someone is standing in another 6’ x 9’\, also on my left. This pattern continues ahead of and behind me. What has happened to me? Have I become an animal in a cage? What day is it? What month\, what year? I ask\, but the only response I get is tears. \nThen a voice suddenly says\, “You are going back to where you come from. You are being deported.” \nI ask again\, “Where are my wife\, my kids? Can I say bye to them?” No more answers. All I continue hearing is the song of tears from the men\, women\, and children around me in other 6 x 9’. \nYou are in a place where there is no way out\, nowhere to go. It is your day to have the worst day of your life. When it hurts too much to move\, I am here to be the first one to help. I am here to stand between you and chaos. I am the first responder. What you see as you look into the mirror is your guardian angel. \nIt is a blessing to have another chance to see the sun again\, another opportunity to right the wrong. \nThis exhibition looks deep into the immigration issues that plague our society. It has become a big bone that has stuck in our throat\, difficult to chew or swallow. It is a nightmarish\, poisonous trauma that has stained our history forever. \nWhy do we go from here? What will those children that they took from their parents think of us in decades to come? \nThis exhibition is not to criticize anybody\, but to create dialogue to find ways to correct our wrongs; to see how we can come to a better existence with our neighbors. How can we heal the wounds\, drain the venom\, and live together in mutual respect and dignity? \nWalk a Mile in Someone’s Shoes:\nAs a part of the Asiko exhibition by Akirash\, from November 22\, 2019 through February 9\, 2020\, the artist asks members of the community to bring in a pair of new or slightly worn shoes to leave in the gallery. You can drop off your shoes at the Crosstown Arts front desk at the top of the red staircase in the East Atrium. With a permanent marker\, Akirash asks each person to write one word on the bottom of each shoe that best describes the original owner. When you drop off your shoes\, you will be given a special ticket. With this ticket\, you can take another pair of shoes at the opening or during the run of the exhibition. We ask you to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. \nAbout the Artist:\nOlaniyi Rasheed Akindiya (aka Akirash) was born in Lagos\, Nigeria and earned his BS in Biochemistry from the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta Nigeria and studied Fine and Applied Art at the Institute of Textile Technology Art & Design Lagos. He currently lives and works between Lagos and Austin\, Texas\, creating work that focuses on fleeting moments that reflect on rural and urban life\, the accelerated pace of development\, and social infrastructure among other topics. He uses various materials and techniques\, including re-purposed items with results ranging from mixed media\, sculpture\, painting\, installation\, video\, and photography to sound and performance work. \nAkirash received the Otis & Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant Award from the Dallas Museum of Art in 2019 to travel to Cameroon\, Ghana\, and the Bahamas for ongoing research into masks\, masquerades\, costumes\, and symbols as a form of communication rooted in Africa that has spread all over the world. \nOther awards include CORE Funding from the Cultural Art Division of Austin TX\,  the Innovative Artist Award from Mid America Artist Alliance (MAAA / NEA)\, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Award\, the Cultural Initiative & Capacity Building Grant\, Culture Alive Austin\, The Santo Foundation Grant\, and the Commonwealth Connection Award. Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter\, Pinterest\, Youtube \n“My work focuses on moments of time\, fleeting moments that can be easily forgotten or transformed. You will feel something when Brother Paul plays that trumpet. You don’t have to waste time analyzing it technically\, harmonically\, arrangements\, production\, blablablah. It’s all good\, trust me. But do yourself a favor and close your eyes and listen to Brother Paul play that horn. There’s a message in it\,” — Kirk Whalum \nPaul’s first solo project single\, “Cecelia\,” is receiving rave reviews from across the country\, and upon hearing the track\, Henry Nelson (Executive Director/Carpenter Arts Garden) had this to say: “I got goose pimples when this piece started the first time and grew teary when the trumpet kicked in. I had Miles Davis memories and felt joyful at the introduction of the sax as the snare and bass tickled. It is a perfect mix!” \n“The fruit don’t fall too far from the tree. This fruit’s tree is someone I worked with\, learned so much from in my developing years\, a piano playing genius\, his father Kurl McKinney. SUMMARY:Ezra Johnson: Selected Animations
DESCRIPTION:On view through Feb. 9\, 2020 \nNew work by Tampa\, Florida-based artist Ezra Johnson in the Screening Room. \nArtist Statement:\n* What Visions Burn 2006 — What Visions Burn was the first animation I ever made. I was getting my MFA at Hunter College in New York and decided to go for it four months before my thesis exhibition after seeing the work of William Kentridge at the MOMA. I wondered what it would be like in paint and went to my studio on 41st street and made the sequence where a silhouetted figure cuts a painting out of the frame that night. I did it by balancing my Cannon Elf camera on a book and shooting the painting against the wall. Because I didn’t have a tripod\, you can see the camera wiggle a lot. The next days\, weeks\, and months I made more and more footage\, most everything I made became What Visions Burn. The processes are invented to solve the problem of each unique scene. I never studied animation so I never learned how else to do it. I used oil paint frame by frame to make certain parts\, such as the sky in the opening. I used collage components and photocopies of drawings to make other parts\, like the police chase. In many scenes\, I combined both techniques. I was exhilarated by inventing new ways to make images and to tell stories. \n* Endless Surface 2016 — Endless Surface was created over the course of one month while I was teaching in Paris. I wanted to make an animation where the narrative wasn’t created by moving characters from scene to scene but by morphing one image into another. I was thinking of the cross-dissolve transitions that Hollywood films use in flashback sequences. This approach makes it less about storytelling and more like “a heap of broken images\,” as T.S. Elliot wrote in The Waste Land: “What are the roots that clutch\, what branches grow/Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man\,/You cannot say\, or guess\, for you know only/A heap of broken images\, where the sun beats… \n* River 2018 — Currently\, I live on the Hillsborough River in Tampa\, Florida. At certain times\, especially after a hard rain I am appalled by the vast amount of trash that floats by or washes up on the banks. This river is home to manatees\, dolphins\, alligators\, large turtles\, and tons of different types of fish. I find it difficult to deal with my shock and frustration by people’s indifference to the environment. I’ve been cleaning what I could since I moved here in 2015\, and then I started painting the trash in 2018 and made this animation. I’ve always loved to use objects and logos from commercial culture in my work. With “River\,” I was able to do that and make a piece that addressed my frustrations at the same time. I decided to zoom out and show the process of animating through the tools at work in the margins. I enjoy the combination of the two kinds of work happening at once: There is the river with its flow pushing an absurd quantity of objects from the right to the left and there are the tools lined up on the edges\, organized for efficiency while making the illusion happen. \n* Trampoline and Shapeshifter 2008\nTrampoline and Shapeshifter were both made as screensavers\, commissioned by the DIA Center in New York. They are an example of the two main approaches I’ve developed to create the animations. Trampoline is made using collage paintings on cut paper\, where if you look closely\, you can see that there are only ten or so components that are used over and over to make an infinite loop. \nShapeshifter is made by moving oil paint; basically painting\, taking a shot\, and repainting over and over. If you look closely\, you can see traces of paint from the previous frame that weren’t entirely wiped away. \nAbout the artist:\nEzra Johnson was born in 1975 in Wenatchee Washington. His work moves between painting\, sculpture and animation. Johnson has exhibited his work at The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas\, The Hammer museum in Los Angeles\, Site Santa Fe in New Mexico as well as having regular exhibitions at prestigious galleries in the US and abroad. Mr. Johnson currently lives and works in Tampa\, Fl.

Akindiya Akirash.\nOn view through Feb. 9\, 2020 in the East Gallery at Crosstown Arts \n\n                 \n\n\n    \nArtist Statement:\nI wake in the depth of night. When I close my eyes\, I feel something is blocking my view. I can‘t breathe deep or stand up from my bed. It feels like something is holding me down. I try to turn my head right or left\, but it is impossible. I try to scream. I can’t find my voice. I think maybe I am dead\, but I still feel that I am breathing. The dead don’t breathe. \nI start to pray as millions of questions pump up my mind. I ask myself\, have I done well in this world? What should I have done better? All the while my bed and pillow turning to a swimming pool of sweat. \nThen suddenly a breeze blows and everything changes. I become myself again. I wake up. I am in a 6’ x 9’ rectangle with a metal rods and a door padlocked. I look at my right someone is standing in another 6’ x 9’\, also on my left. This pattern continues ahead of and behind me. What has happened to me? Have I become an animal in a cage? What day is it? What month\, what year? I ask\, but the only response I get is tears. \nThen a voice suddenly says\, “You are going back to where you come from. You are being deported.” \nI ask again\, “Where are my wife\, my kids? Can I say bye to them?” No more answers. All I continue hearing is the song of tears from the men\, women\, and children around me in other 6 x 9’. \nYou are in a place where there is no way out\, nowhere to go. It is your day to have the worst day of your life. When it hurts too much to move\, I am here to be the first one to help. I am here to stand between you and chaos. I am the first responder. What you see as you look into the mirror is your guardian angel. \nIt is a blessing to have another chance to see the sun again\, another opportunity to right the wrong. \nThis exhibition looks deep into the immigration issues that plague our society. It has become a big bone that has stuck in our throat\, difficult to chew or swallow. It is a nightmarish\, poisonous trauma that has stained our history forever. \nWhy do we go from here? What will those children that they took from their parents think of us in decades to come? \nThis exhibition is not to criticize anybody\, but to create dialogue to find ways to correct our wrongs; to see how we can come to a better existence with our neighbors. How can we heal the wounds\, drain the venom\, and live together in mutual respect and dignity? \nWalk a Mile in Someone’s Shoes:\nAs a part of the Asiko exhibition by Akirash\, from November 22\, 2019 through February 9\, 2020\, the artist asks members of the community to bring in a pair of new or slightly worn shoes to leave in the gallery. You can drop off your shoes at the Crosstown Arts front desk at the top of the red staircase in the East Atrium. With a permanent marker\, Akirash asks each person to write one word on the bottom of each shoe that best describes the original owner. When you drop off your shoes\, you will be given a special ticket. With this ticket\, you can take another pair of shoes at the opening or during the run of the exhibition. We ask you to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. \nAbout the Artist:\nOlaniyi Rasheed Akindiya (aka Akirash) was born in Lagos\, Nigeria and earned his BS in Biochemistry from the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta Nigeria and studied Fine and Applied Art at the Institute of Textile Technology Art & Design Lagos. He currently lives and works between Lagos and Austin\, Texas\, creating work that focuses on fleeting moments that reflect on rural and urban life\, the accelerated pace of development\, and social infrastructure among other topics. He uses various materials and techniques\, including re-purposed items with results ranging from mixed media\, sculpture\, painting\, installation\, video\, and photography to sound and performance work. \nAkirash received the Otis & Velma Davis Dozier Travel Grant Award from the Dallas Museum of Art in 2019 to travel to Cameroon\, Ghana\, and the Bahamas for ongoing research into masks\, masquerades\, costumes\, and symbols as a form of communication rooted in Africa that has spread all over the world. \nOther awards include CORE Funding from the Cultural Art Division of Austin TX\,  the Innovative Artist Award from Mid America Artist Alliance (MAAA / NEA)\, the Pollock Krasner Foundation Award\, the Cultural Initiative & Capacity Building Grant\, Culture Alive Austin\, The Santo Foundation Grant\, and the Commonwealth Connection Award. Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter\, Pinterest\, Youtube \n“My work focuses on moments of time\, fleeting moments that can be easily forgotten or transformed. He honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary musicians\, including extensive study with renowned jazz educator Barry Harris\, receiving numerous accolades and awards along the way\, including the honor of being selected as a semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano competition. Each year\, he has curated and led the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) Jazz Jam series since its inception. \nAll of these experiences have culminated into a debut offering that pays tribute to one of his longtime heroes\, Stevie Wonder\, titled Songs in the Key of Wonder. Austin has long considered Wonder as one of the greatest composers of our time. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). SUMMARY:After-School Workshop: Exploring Akirash
DESCRIPTION:Students will study a piece from Akirash’s work in Asiko: Moments\, on display in the East Gallery. Then they’ll sketch inside his gallery exhibit. \nAfterward\, in the East Atrium\, students will finish their work with acrylic paint. They will do this for three weeks\, completing 2-3 works\, which will be displayed in a pop-up gallery during the final week (December 15-20). \nThis three-part workshop will be held on December 3\, 10\, and 17. This workshop is for students in the 8th-12th grades. \nFree; registration is required
