SUMMARY:Spotlight Concert Series: Barrie Cooper and Brian Ray
DESCRIPTION:Join Memphis Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Barrie Cooper and pianist Brian Ray of Rhodes College for the first Spotlight Concert Series performance. The Spanish-themed program features works by Joaquín Turina\, Eugène Ysaÿe\, and more. \nSpotlight Concert Series showcases members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in the intimate Green Room at Crosstown Arts. The series provides the Memphis community the opportunity to get to know and learn more about the talented musicians that make up the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Each month will feature a different musician or small chamber group as soloist or featured ensemble. \n$10 at the door | $7 on Eventbrite in advance | $5 at the door with student ID \n\n  \n \nAbout the musicians:\nBarrie Cooper is Acting Concertmaster of the Memphis Symphony. She started violin studies at four with John Kendall at the Suzuki program of Southern Illinois University\, Edwardsville. She also served as Kendall’s assistant\, traveling across the US and Japan to workshops and conferences. Barrie studied viola (because none of her friends would) in order to join the Più Mosso Quartet\, which gave numerous concerts in the Midwest and East Coast. For two years\, she was Principal Viola in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. After attending Ithaca College\, Barrie graduated from Peabody Conservatory\, where she won the Marbury Violin Competition and the Josef Kasper Prize for excellence in violin performance. Barrie has spent the last 14 summers as Principal Second Violin at the American Institute of Musical Studies orchestra in Graz\, Austria. A die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan\, she shares her home with two beautiful dogs and five wonderful cats. \n \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson and Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

SUMMARY:Kenturah Davis + Desmond Lewis Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion with artists Kenturah Davis and Desmond Lewis. Moderated by Brian R. Jobe.\n\nAfter the discussion\, the public is invited to visit the studio of Desmond Lewis at 3:30pm. His studio is located at 2856 Lamb Place in Memphis.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the show:\nSeed Space + Delta Axis present: Kenturah Davis + Desmond Lewis\n\n\nMemphis artist Desmond Lewis and Kenturah Davis (an artist working between Los Angeles\, New Haven\, and Accra\, Ghana) were selected by Delta Axis and Locate Arts/Seed Space to exhibit their work together based on their innovative sensitivity to material\, their exploration of social and relational content\, and the critical acclaim associated with their work. \nOn view: February 15-March 10 \nDelta Axis and Locate Arts/ Seed Space share a mission to promote contemporary art in Memphis and to connect Memphis to the national arts network. After years of dialogue\, a collaboration between the two organizations is emerging in the form of this exhibition. It features an artist practicing in Memphis (Desmond Lewis) and an artist practicing outside of Tennessee (Kenturah Davis). The two artists were selected to exhibit their work together based on their innovative sensitivity to material\, their exploration of social and relational content\, and the critical acclaim associated with their work. \n\n\nThis two-person show is one in a series of statewide exhibitions\, organized by Locate Arts\, that features Tennessee artists and artists from out of state\, and partners with a local organization. These exhibitions are leading up to a major statewide event: The TN Triennial\, which will be the largest contemporary art exhibition ever to occur in Tennessee. Its impact will be significant\, both economically and socially\, with an enduring effect\, especially on our visual arts community. The TN Triennial will be a celebration of the experience of contemporary art in Tennessee\, and will include works by renowned artists from inside and outside of the state. The curator has been selected\, important venues are signed up and the dates are set. More information will be released this spring. \nAbout the artists:\nKenturah Davis is an artist working between Los Angeles\, New Haven\, and Accra (Ghana). Her work oscillates between various facets of portraiture and design. Using text as a point of departure\, she explores the fundamental role that language has in shaping how we understand ourselves and the world around us. This manifests in a variety of forms including drawings\, sculpture\, and performances. Davis was commissioned by LA Metro to create large-scale\, site-specific work that will be permanently installed on the new Crenshaw/LAX rail line\, opening fall 2019. Her work has been included in institutional exhibitions in Africa\, Asia\, Australia and Europe. Davis earned her BA from Occidental College and MFA Yale University School of Art. \nDesmond Lewis is a sculptor who was born and raised in Nashville\, TN. Lewis received his AA from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington\, MA in 2012\, BS from Tennessee State University in Nashville\, TN in 2014\, and MFA from The University of Memphis in 2017. Selected group exhibitions include Current Collapse at Ruddell Gallery in 2017 in Spearfish\, SD\, Price is Right at David Lusk Gallery in 2017 in Memphis\, TN\, Equality Matters at Mildred Cox Gallery in 2017 in Fulton\, MO\, and The Collective Presents: Liberation at the Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College in 2018 in Memphis\, TN. Public and private collections include the Penland School of Crafts\, Carolina Bronze Sculpture Park\, City of Lenoir\, NC\, City of Hickory\, NC\, Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center\, The University of Memphis\, Soulsville USA\, NexAir LLC\, Skowhegan Parks and Recreation\, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. In 2017\, He was named one of the 100 Interesting and Influential People of Memphis. Residencies include the Pittsburgh Glass Center (2018)\, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2018)\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2017)\, and the Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center (2016). Desmond is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville\, TN. His studio is based in Memphis\, TN.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Gabe Mayhan on Cinematography
DESCRIPTION:Gabe Mayhan is a cinematographer who shoots features\, documentaries\, shorts\, television shows\, and commercials. Join Gabe as he discusses setting up shots\, camera and lens choices\, lighting\, working with directors\, directing documentaries\, creating a sustainable career as a cinematographer in a fly-over state\, and his involvement in the Arkansas Film Society. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | presentation at 7 pm \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for film makers presented by Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts. \n\nAbout Gabe Mayhan:\nGabe Mayhan has compiled a diverse body of work over the course of his cinematography career. Whether it was from his time covering breaking news\, to shooting in remote locations in South America for an adventure show\, or crafting stylistic narrative stories\, he approaches each project with dutiful ambition\, respectful collaboration\, and innovative technique. His work has been screened at film festivals such as Slamdance and Tribeca\, broadcast on networks the likes of HBO\, Showtime and PBS\, and screened theatrically across the US. Many of the films have been recognized and awarded for the cinematography. \n2016 was a pretty big year for Gabe\, having two films released theatrically\, Greater and Lazy Eye. Greater is a heartfelt drama set in the world of college football. And Lazy Eye\, a bittersweet romance about reconnecting with a lost love. Although very different in style and content\, both films have been well-received. Gabe also returned behind the lens for the second season of  Mineral Explorers\, a travel show that explores the origins and geological stories of minerals from around the world. \nOther forthcoming works are the feature films All the Birds Have Flown South\, a southern gothic drama that deals with despair and addiction\, and Antiquities\, a coming-of-age story about a young man encountering loss and finding himself in the journey. \nWhether behind the lens or in the director’s chair\, his work on documentaries is gaining attention as well. In 2012\, he shot All About Ann\, an HBO documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Texas Governor Ann Richards\, and Champion Trees\, a documentary for PBS that explores the relationship between art and nature. The show captured two Emmys for Cultural Documentary and Cinematography in 2014. Slated to air spring of 2017\, the documentary Dream Land tells the history of an African American neighborhood during segregation and the lasting impact of Urban Renewal. In both Champion Trees and Dream Land\, Gabe held double duties as the films’ director and cinematographer. \nGabe’s unique vision and strong understanding of story have quickly gained the interest of filmmakers and audiences around the country. He brings an understanding that each project has its own way to be crafted visually\, and within each story there is a unique opportunity to evolve the narrative emotionally through the cinematography\, allowing the film to be seen — in its best light.
