SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:– Melissa Farris – facilitator\n\n\n– Presenting artists:\n\n\n – Ethan Taylor\n\n\n – Emily Mark\n– Nick Pena\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice.\n\nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center Supply Store for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback.

SUMMARY:Meraki
DESCRIPTION:Photographs by Kaneadra Campbell \nArtist statement:\nMeraki! Come see the world the way I do. To see beauty when other people may not. Meraki is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul\, creativity\, or love — when you put out “something of yourself.” These pictures are me\, how I express who I am\, and how I feel. I want to celebrate how far I’ve come as a photographer. \nNo cover fee\, free food and drinks\nArt will be for sale \nOrganized by the artist

SUMMARY:Brick Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition of work by Carrie Rubinstein \nOpening: December 14\, 6-8 pm \nArtist Statement:\nInfluenced by the abundant brick and plaster walls of the Crosstown Concourse building in which it was conceived\, Brick Fiction consists of two freestanding wooden structures that are covered in drawings that mimic those surfaces. The walls of Crosstown Concourse reveal layers of sandblasted paint\, plaster\, brick\, and concrete from the previous century. The beauty of this raw surface inspires my sensibilities as an artist because it sparks my curiosity about the prior occupants of this place. \nBoth structures stand at 10 x 9 x 8’ tall and contain full-size doors and two windows. The viewer is invited to experience the work from its interior and perimeter. One structure features hand-drawn individual bricks for its entire exterior. Even though each structure is nine feet tall\, the overlapping placement of each interior drawing of plaster walls produces an unexpected intimacy. Other objects made entirely from hand-drawn and folded sheet paper include a ceiling that resembles wooden planks\, an electrical outlet\, and a three-dimensional fuse box with bolts and wire housing. \nRubinstein is motivated by the dichotomy of building representational space out of non-traditional construction materials. This natural tension drives her practice and she continually seeks to give it structure. Brick Fiction celebrates the renewal of an old space and its objects complement the revitalized edifice from which they are inspired. \n\nBrick Fiction is inspired by the raw beauty found in the walls of Crosstown Concourse\nAside from the wooden framework\, the objects are all hollow constructed sheet paper.\nUsing paper to represent solid construction materials is a driving force for the artist.\n\n\nAbout the artist:\nCarrie Rubinstein is a Brooklyn-based artist who creates ink drawings\, paper sculptures\, and watercolor paintings. She earned her BA in Studio Art from Smith College\, a post- baccalaureate degree in Sculpture from Brandeis University\, and her MFA in Sculpture from Hunter College with a semester at L’École des Beaux Arts in Paris. \nNotable NYC-based group shows include exhibitions at Arts@Renaissance\, Brooklyn Museum’s Go Open Studio Project\, A.I.R. Gallery\, Orgy Park\, The Roger Smith Hotel\, and TSA Gallery. In 2010-11\, Rubinstein coordinated the tART art collective\, and in 2013 was a sculpture resident at the Vermont Studio Center. \nHer VSC experience generated early work for Retrofit\, a full-room installation made entirely from paper through drawings\, hollow constructed sculptures\, and castings. Brooklyn’s Rhombus Space presented Retrofit\, which was Rubinstein’s first NYC solo show\, and she was their August 2015 artist-in-residence. In June 2017\, Rubinstein created the paper installation\, Found Underground\, at Hunter College’s Thomas Hunter Project Space in Manhattan. In September 2017\, Retrofit traveled to the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph\, MI. This was Rubinstein’s first solo museum show. Rubinstein was honored to be a pilot artist in-residence at Crosstown Arts in Memphis for 2017-18.

SUMMARY:Point in Time
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of video art by Janaye Brown.\nLocation: Screening Room\, plus pop-out film panels in the East Atrium \nPoint in Time presents sixteen of Brown’s minimalist videos made within the past seven years. Brown makes videos based on pregnant moments observed in her everyday life. Her filmmaking background informs the techniques used to build and sustain a sense of anticipation while emphasizing the passage of time. Through an extended look at a narrative fragment\, often with a single action as its focus\, the subtlest shifts become prominent\, and the viewer has time to examine everything within the mise-en-scène. She seeks access to the tension and mystique that lay beneath the surface of familiarity. \nAbout the artist:\nJanaye Brown has exhibited at venues and film festivals including New York City’s Studio Museum Harlem\, the Dallas Video Fest\, The Banff Centre in Alberta\, Canada and Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles. She has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture\, the Bruce High Quality Foundation University and Crosstown Arts as well as others. Brown received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and her BA in Cinematic Arts and Technology from California State University Monterey Bay in 2010. She currently lives and works in Xiamen\, Fujian\, China.

SUMMARY:The Music of Wayne Shorter
DESCRIPTION:Jazz tribute to American jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter featuring David Edwards (vocals)\, Hamilton Hardin (saxophones – tenor\, soprano\, alto)\, Carl Caspersen (acoustic bass)\, Jonathan Bass (guitar)\, Keenan Shotwell (piano)\, and James Sexton (drums). \nThis special holiday jazz concert will be held in the new Crosstown Arts Theater as fourth “mic check” event\, testing the sound and lighting in the new space. \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \nTickets: $15 (purchase on Eventbrite) \n\n\n\nAbout David Edwards:\n\n\nOutgoing. Tenacious. Loyal. Those are just three words one would use to capture the essence of David Edwards. A native of Kansas City\, Kansas\, he’s been deemed a musical genius. He has always had a vivid interest in music. From a very young age\, he was captivated by the melodic lines\, rhythmic beats and the pulsating vocals of artists like Lauryn Hill\, Karen Clark Sheard\, and John P. Kee. It would prove to be an interest that would provoke Edwards to stay on a musical course and find his voice. His divine path ultimately led him to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. From there\, he would continue finding his voice while living his dream in Memphis\, Tennessee — a city known for its eclectic mix of blues\, gospel\, rock\, pop\, and soul music.\n\n\n \n\n\nIn July 2011\, Edwards obtained his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Phoenix. At the present\, he is making an impact on young scholars as the Music and Voice Instructor at KIPP: Memphis Collegiate Middle School. For the past seven years\, Edwards has lead the charge as the Praise and Worship Leader at the historic Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis each week\, creating an atmosphere for the people of God to draw closer to His presence. Edwards is an advocate for the youth and a connoisseur of music. He aspires to open his own school for gifted and talented students in the area of music.\n\n\n \n\n\nNot forsaking his own musical career ambitions\, Edwards’ musical talents have afforded him the opportunity to share the stage with some of the most amazing figures in the Gospel Music industry today\, such as multiple award winning artists\, Maurette Brown Clark\, Dorinda Clark Cole\, Smokie Norful\, Donnie McClurkin and Vashawn Mitchell.\n\n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

Lance Bangs will also present excerpts from his new concert film of the band performing the album in its entirety in Glasgow in 2007. A few unseen gems from the band’s archives will round out the bill. \nDoors at 7 pm | Screening at 7:30 pm \nThanks to Lance Bangs and Sonic Youth\, we are grateful to be able to offer this event as a fundraising opportunity to support Crosstown Arts’ ongoing events and programming.  A donation of any amount to Crosstown Arts will secure your seat (while supplies last!). For tickets\, click HERE to make a donation that will support our ongoing arts and music programming. \nAbout the film: \nSonic Youth released their sixth album\, Daydream Nation\, 30 years ago on October 18\, 1988. The album was an immediate critical success. Lance Bangs’ new Sonic Youth concert film Daydream Nation presents the band performing the double album in Glasgow in August 2007. Bangs blends HD footage shot in Glasgow with fragments of personal Super8mm and 16mm from his archives of Sonic Youth over the decades. \n\nSonic Youth released their sixth album Daydream Nation on October 18\,1988. The album was an immediate critical success. Robert Palmer wrote in Rolling Stone that it “presents the definitive American guitar band of the Eighties at the height of its powers and prescience.” Time has not dimmed the album’s luster: It was selected to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2005 and in 2013 Consequence of Sound declared “the record simply rules.”

SUMMARY:John Kilzer Album Release
DESCRIPTION:John Kilzer album release concert with John Kilzer\, Matt Ross-Spang (acoustic guitar)\, Steve Selvidge (guitar)\, Steve Potts (drums)\, Dave Smith (bass guitar)\, & Rick Steff (keys).\n\n\nTickets are $30 (purchase on Eventbrite) \n\nAbout John Kilzer:\nIn disparate but somehow related ways\, John Kilzer is a virtual Renaissance man whose talent is one of remarkable breadth\, a reflection of his intellect and deep-seated soulfulness. \nBeyond Memphis\, where he’s long resided\, having moved there from Jackson TN (home of Carl Perkins)\, the national music community became aware of him in the late 1980s when he was signed to Geffen Records. In the intervening years\, he’s recorded a number of albums for both major and indie labels and has written songs that have been recorded and released by Roseanne Cash\, Trace Adkins\, Dobie Gray and Maria Muldaur\, among others. While he’s an accomplished musical entity\, it should be noted that he’s been an athlete\, a star forward for the Memphis State Tigers. At Memphis State he not only earned a Masters degree in English literature but also taught the subject full time for three years.

SUMMARY:Sink Into a Dream
DESCRIPTION:Olga King and Savannah White unite in a duo art show Sink Into A Dream. \nOn view 6-8 pm on Friday\, Jan. 26 and from 10 am-1 pm on Saturday\, Jan. 27. \nOrganized by the artists \nAbout the artists:\nOlga King\, a native of Russia who has made Memphis home for several years\, is well-known for jewelry making and painting. Formerly married to a world-roaming photojournalist and herself traveling annually on excursions to find gem stones\, King brings experience and a worldview to her paintings\, which vary between representational still life and ethereal personas. \nSavannah Jewell White expresses her creativity in many ways — fashion modeling\, event planning\, and painting being three. Her paintings are particularly influenced by travel and she has done quite a bit\, from Europe to the Far East\, Milan to Mt. Fuji. The fluidity and vivid styling in her paintings hints at a life on the go; this is immediately verified when you meet her. \nThe show title references Travelling by 19th century romantic poet William Wordsworth\, and takes double meaning in both an imbued sense of place for the traveler and the sometimes mystical\, sometimes whimsical\, always lively traits seen in the work of both artists.

SUMMARY:Brick Fiction Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Artist Carrie Rubinstein will discuss her work on view in her solo exhibition\, Brick Fiction\, which runs through January 27. \nArtist Statement:\nInfluenced by the abundant brick and plaster walls of the Crosstown Concourse building in which it was conceived\, Brick Fiction consists of two freestanding wooden structures that are covered in drawings that mimic those surfaces. \n\nBrick Fiction is inspired by the raw beauty found in the walls of Crosstown Concourse\nAside from the wooden framework\, the objects are all hollow constructed sheet paper.\nUsing paper to represent solid construction materials is a driving force for the artist.
