He has released five albums under his own name since 2012\, all of which are receiving critical acclaim from the New York Times\, Stereogum\, Downbeat\, JazzTimes\, and more. John has also established himself as a sought-after educator\, both as the Professor of Jazz Trumpet at Indiana University and as a guest clinician and soloist at schools around the world. \nRaymond’s Real Feels is a bass-less trio that includes Gilad Hekselman (guitar) and Colin Stranahan (drums)\, and the leader on flugelhorn. Concerns over security\, money\, and other factors ultimately killed the deal and The Beatles remained at Abbey Road. Can you imagine what that next record\, to be titled Revolver\, would have sounded like had it been recorded in Memphis? Would Otis Redding have added some background vocals? Would Booker T have played organ? What about the Memphis horns? \n\nSince The MD’s main goal is to keep the incredible catalog of Booker T & The MG’s music alive\, they have decided to try something a little different. With the utmost respect to Booker\, Steve\, Duck\, and Al\, they are going to perform Revolver as they think the MG’s would have in the ’60s. \nAbout The MD’s:\nThe only Booker T & the MG’s tribute band in the group’s hometown of Memphis\, TN. The MD’s will play anything Booker T & the MG’s ever recorded in the studio or at a live show.

Shortly after moving back to Memphis in 1990\, she began fronting rock-soul band The Mother Station and was signed to a record deal with EastWest / Atlantic Records. In 1994 they released their debut album “Brand New Bag” which peeked at #34 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock charts. \nSince then\, Susan’s released three critically praised solo albums — “Susan Marshall Is Honey Mouth\,” “Firefly\,” and “Little Red.” She has performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, Memphis Jazz Orchestra\, and is also known for her solo and duo performances in residency at Itta Bena. \nSusan has toured all over the world as part of the Afghan Whigs as well as with Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band\, which included appearances on Austin City Limits\, The Late Show w/David Letterman\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and the BBC’s “Later … with Jools Holland.” \nSusan is also known for her studio and/or stage work with a wide range of superstars; Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Alvin Youngblood Hart\, Solomon Burke\, Jim Lauderdale\, Steve Earle\, and Kirk Whalum to name a few. This month’s guest: jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon  \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm\nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \n\nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Wycliffe Gordon:\nWycliffe Gordon experiences an impressive career touring the world performing to\ngreat acclaim from audiences and critics alike. \nJazz Journalists Association named him “Trombonist of the Year” for the 12th time in\n2019\, and Downbeat Critics Poll named Wycliffe “Best Trombone” for the fifth time\nlast year (2018\, 2016\, 2014\, 2013 & 2012). Most recently Wycliffe received the\n“Louie Award” honoring his dedication and commitment to the music of Louis\nArmstrong\, and received the International Trombone Association Award in 2017\,\nwhich recognizes the highest level of creative and artistic achievement. In 2015\,\nWycliffe was presented the Satchmo award from the Sarasota Jazz Club\, received the\nLouis Armstrong Memorial Prize presented by the Swing Jazz Culture Foundation\,\nand was named Artist of the Year (2015) by the Augusta Arts Council. He is also a\npast recipient of the ASCAP Foundation Vanguard Award\, among others. \nIn addition to an extremely successful solo career\, Gordon tours regularly leading\nhis quintet\, headlining at legendary jazz venues and performing arts centers\nthroughout the world. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nFacilitator: Resident artist Nathaniel Cummings-Lambert\nArtists: Joy Murray\, Tim Allen\, Eric Painter\, Kathleen Stevens\n\n\n\nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. SUMMARY:Odeya Nini: A Solo Voice
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by Los Angeles-based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer Odeya Nini.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvolving over the last eight years\, A Solo Voice\, composed and performed by Odeya Nini\, is an investigation of resonance\, extended vocal techniques\, performance\, and pure expression\, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements\, aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. In a multi-dimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication\, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures\, ages\, emotions and colors\, like photographs\, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7 pm |Performance 7:30pm \nOdeya Nini is a Los Angeles-based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer. At the locus of her interests are performance practices\, gesture\, textural harmony\, tonal animation\, and the illumination of minute sounds\, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète. Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body\, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur. Odeya has collaborated extensively with dancers\, visual artists\, filmmakers and theater directors as both a composer and soloist and has worked with and appeared in works by artists and ensembles such as Meredith Monk\, Butch Morris\, Lucy & Jorge Orta\, The Industry & Wild Up. \nOdeya’s work has been presented at venues and festivals across the US and internationally\, such as Resonant Bodies Festival\, Banff Centre\, The Pulitzer Arts Foundation\, The LA Phil\, MONA and Art Basel Miami\, from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv\, Australia\, Mongolia\, Madagascar and Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $10 (at the door only) \nDouble feature with THE UNHOLY THREE and a live score by BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE\, followed by a screening of NIGHT OF THE HUNTER \nTHE UNHOLY THREE was Tod Browning’s first shot at telling the story of three sideshow performers who grow sick of living the impoverished life they lead and hatch a plan to get rich. Tweedledee (Harry Earles) is a dwarf who disguises himself as a baby. Professor Echo\, a ventriloquist\, becomes Mrs. O’Grady — Tweedledee’s “grandmother.” Professor Echo’s girlfriend\, who is a pickpocket\, becomes his “granddaughter.”  Theft\, fake talking parrots\, murder\, ALMOST child murder\, circus strongmen\, and an unhinged pet ape!!!!  \nBLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE is a Memphis­-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi­-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, soul\, and hip hop and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. The astronomical term “blueshift” indicates an object’s moving closer toward the observer. Blueshift aims to bring concert music and art out of the concert hall and into the Memphis community. \nSECOND FEATURE: NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)\nA tall\, handsome ‘preacher’ — his knuckles eerily tattooed with ‘love’ and ‘hate’ — roams the countryside\, spreading the gospel … and leaving a trail of murdered women in his wake. To Reverend Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum)\, the work of the Lord has more to do with condemning souls than saving them\, especially when his own interests are involved. Now his sights are set on $10\,000 — and two little children are the only ones who know where it is. ‘Chill…dren!’ the preacher croons to the terrified boy and girl hiding in the cold\, dark cellar … innocent young lambs who refuse to be led astray.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts for a performance by blues guitarist and singer-songwriter Scott Sherrard and Memphis-based soul band\, The Bo-Keys. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30 pm | Show at 8 pm \n“One of the best guitarists in the country.” — Billboard Magazine \nScott Sharrard is best-known as lead guitarist and bandleader for the late Gregg Allman. But his personal artistic journey – which includes singing\, songwriting\, producing\, and arranging – began long before he first teamed up with the rock icon. \n“Gregg had a pure passion and heart\,” Sharrard says of his friend\, “especially when it came to being a musician. That authenticity and dedication is a daily inspiration\, and I will always carry that with me onstage and in the studio.” \nHis latest record\,“Saving Grace\,” with the blues at its core\, bears a distinctly southern spirit. Sessions took place in Memphis and at the historic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama. Half the album employs the Hi Rhythm Section\, the other The Swampers of Muscle Shoals. \nThe partnership with Allman ended with the 69-year-old’s death on May 27\, 2017. But not before Allman covered Sharrard’s “Love Like Kerosene” on 2015’s “Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon\, GA\,” and again on Allman’s eighth and final solo album\, the posthumous\, GRAMMY-nominated “Southern Blood” (Rounder Records\, 2017). \nAnother “Southern Blood” track\, the unforgettable farewell “My Only True Friend” – co-written by Sharrard and Allman – earned a GRAMMY nomination for Americana Song of the Year. \nHe’s now begun a new chapter with an album he consciously wanted to summarize the last 20 years of his work – and one that showcases the totality of his artistry: as guitarist\, singer\, songwriter\, producer\, arranger and bandleader. \nIn short\, he says\, it’s rock n’ roll rooted in everything else. \n“I basically have a rock ’n’ roll band\,” Sharrard explains. “When I was growing up\, I loved bands like Little Feat\, Led Zeppelin and the Allmans. They would explore so many styles and experiment. That’s something I have always tried to embrace\, and that’s how I want to present my music today. This is what I tried to do with Gregg. Now I’m continuing that as a solo artist.”

DESCRIPTION:Jazz bassist\, composer\, and educator Bob Bowman performs at The Green Room with Michael Shults\, Pat Coil\, and Danny Gottlieb. \nFeaturing Bob Bowan (bass)\, Michael Shults (saxophone)\, Pat Coil (piano)\, and Danny Gottlieb (drums). \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \n\nAbout Bob Bowman:\nBob Bowman\, a native Kansan\, learned to play the piano and clarinet before beginning to play bass at age 12. He won a scholarship to the Stan Kenton Jazz Clinic as a high school freshman\, followed by study at North Texas State University. \nIn 1976\, he joined the famous Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra\, touring and recording several albums\, including the Grammy award-winning “Live in Munich.” Bob continued his performing and recording career by joining the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabakin Big Band in Los Angeles in 1979. He recorded numerous albums as a member of this band\, many of which were nominated for Grammy Awards. Bob also had long musical relationships with pianists\, composers and arrangers Dan Haerle and Frank Mantooth. \nBob has toured and recorded with many artists including the legendary Carmen McRae\, Pat Coil\, Freddie Hubbard\, Bud Shank\, Karrin Allyson\, Steve Houghton\, Steve Allee\, Bill Mays\, Clay Jenkins\, Danny Embrey\, Todd Strait\, Bob Sheppard\, Matt Otto\, Rod Fleeman\, John Stowell\, Jerry Hahn\, Bobby Watson and others. Also he has had a very important musical relationship with Kansas City musicians like Tommy Ruskin\, Paul Smith\, Mike Ning\, Claude “Fiddler” Williams\, Jay McShann\, Stan Kessler\, and many more. Bob moved to Kansas City in 1988 where he has been a major part of the vibrant jazz scene there. He was a faculty member of the University of Missouri as well as Ottawa University and leads legendary Kansas City group INTERSTRING and various version of Bowdog.

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $10 (at the door only) \nDouble feature with THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (1921) and a live piano accompaniment by Maeve Brophy\, followed by a screening of SECOND FEATURE: GANJA & HESS (1973). \nTHE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (1921): The last person to die on New Year’s Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death’s chariot and work tirelessly\, collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (Körkarlen)\, directed by the father of Swedish cinema\, Victor Sjöström. The story\, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf\, concerns an alcoholic\, abusive ne’er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways\, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale\, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects. \nMAEVE BROPHY gave her first solo piano recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at 15. She has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England; the Amalfi Coast; Kiev\, Ukraine; New York; San Francisco; Seattle; Aspen; Nashville; and Memphis. She has performed for the Memphis Chamber Music Society and the Artist Ascending Series in Memphis and is a regular performer with the Luna Nova Ensemble. Maeve has performed as soloist with the Chernygev Symphony in Kiev as well as the Paducah Symphony and the Central Florida Philharmonic. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Russell Sherman. She has worked as a freelance accompanist in Memphis and played for numerous student recitals at the University of Memphis. She has taught students privately as well as at the Boston College of Adult Education. \nSECOND FEATURE: GANJA & HESS (1973): Flirting with the conventions of blaxploitation and horror\, Bill Gunn’s revolutionary independent film GANJA & HESS is a highly stylized and utterly original treatise on sex\, religion\, and African American identity. Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead) stars as anthropologist Hess Green\, who is stabbed with an ancient ceremonial dagger by his unstable assistant (director Bill Gunn)\, bestowing upon him the blessing of immortality … and the curse of an unquenchable thirst for blood. When the assistant’s beautiful and outspoken wife Ganja (Marlene Clark) comes searching for her missing husband\, she and Hess form an unexpected partnership. Together\, they explore just how much power blood holds. Later recut and released in an inferior version\, this edition represents the original release\, restored by The Museum of Modern Art with support from The Film Foundation\, and mastered in HD from a 35mm negative.

First inspired to play guitar after hearing a fellow college student playing in a stairwell\, Wilcox is now 18 records into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice\, virtuosic guitar chops\, and creative open tunings\, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. \nDavid was the first artist Folk All Y’all reached out to host\, way back in 2014. After that first (more-than-)sold-out show\, David’s come back and played five more times and become the artist we consider our patron saint. We’re thrilled to welcome David to our first concert at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\, a space that has inspired him for years and represents the community he’s built with us in Memphis. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Our mission is to present world-class singer-songwriters in an intimate\, attentive environment. With his “virtuosic playing characterized by irresistible exuberance\,” as described by The New York Times\, his interpretations conjure the passion\, playfulness\, and drama of Rioja\, his homeland’s rich musical heritage. He is known for his passionate\, emotive\, and open-hearted playing\, whether he is performing at intimate recital halls\, or playing with Plácido Domingo to an audience of over 85\,000 at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid\, where maestro Domingo hailed him as “the master of the guitar.” \nSáinz Villegas has continued to thrive over the past year connecting in new ways with his audience. Highlights of his recent collaborations with Domingo include a performance on a floating stage on the Amazon River streamed worldwide to millions\, as well as a special anniversary concert at Chile’s National Stadium. Last season\, Sáinz Villegas also made his debut at Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival under the baton of Carlos Kalmar at the Millennium Park to an audience of 11\,000 people and accomplished summer tours with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He also gave the world premiere of ‘Rounds\,’ the first composition for guitar by five-time Academy Award-winner John Williams. \nRoutinely drawing comparisons with legendary exponents of his instrument such as Andrés Segovia\, Sáinz Villegas has already appeared on some of the world’s most prestigious stages including Carnegie Hall in New York\, the Philharmonie in Berlin\, and at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Known for a sound so rich and full that it does not need amplification\, his concerto performances regularly inspire new invitations and re-engagements in more than 30 countries. Far from a dry dissertation on the topic\, the film itself is a witches’ brew of the scary\, the gross\, and the darkly humorous. Christensen’s mix-and-match approach to genre anticipates gothic horror\, documentary re-creation\, and the essay film\, making for an experience unlike anything else in the history of cinema. \nIs 1000 LIGHTS a post punk band? A proto-punk band? A goth band? A band of Memphis’ heaviest hitters? All of the above? Meet A Thousand Lights. Guitarist Joey Killingsworth (Jocephus and the George Jonestown Massacre\, Super Witch\, Grendel Crane\, Static Bombs)\, drummer Russ Thompson (The Margins\, Static Bombs\, New Intruders\, Pisshorse)\, bassist Chris McCoy (Super Witch\, Static Bombs\, New Intruders\, Pisshorse)\, and vocalist Jesse James Davis (Yesse Yavis\, Model Zero) owe their partnership to the Memphis Does Bowie benefit show. Thompson\, who has been a musical partner with McCoy since their days in the legendary 90s art punk band Pisshorse\, sat in with McCoy and Killingsworth’s metal juggernaut Super Witch to cover the Bowie classics “Scary Monsters and Super Creeps\,” “Cat People\,” and “It Ain’t Easy.” Davis\, dressed as Low-era Bowie\, brought the house down fronting Winchester and the Ammunition. Memphis Does Bowie raised more than $20\,000 for Memphis area charities. In 2017\, Killingsworth\, Thompson\, and McCoy were playing together in the death rock project Static Bombs when the trio tapped Davis for a pair of shows: Gimmie Shelter\, a benefit for homeless charities that saw Memphis musicians paying tribute to the Rolling Stones; and a slot at Memphis’ hottest Halloween party\, hosted by Black Lodge Video\, where the band\, joined by saxophonist Seth Moody\, performed The Stooges Funhouse album in its entirety. These shows were such a raging success that the group decided to make it permanent\, renaming themselves A Thousand Lights\, after a line from The Stooges’ “Down On The Street.”  As you can tell from the choices of artists they paid tribute to\, A Thousand Lights sound is slippery and diverse\, incorporating elements from the earliest days of punk and post punk that bands like Bauhaus\, Siouxsie and the Banshees\, and Love and Rockets synthesized into goth rock.  Their debut EP “3nc EP” is available now on iTunes & Spotify.  \nSECOND FEATURE: DEEP RED (1975): 4K restoration! From Dario Argento\, the man behind some the greatest excursions in Italian horror (SUSPIRIA\, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE\, THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS)\, comes DEEP RED: arguably the ultimate giallo. Aided by a throbbing score from legendary proggers Goblin\, this hallucinatory fever dream is punctuated by some of the most expert setpieces the genre has to offer. One lonely night\, musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings\, BLOW UP)\, looks up from the plaza below and witnesses the brutal axe murder of a woman in her apartment. Racing to the scene\, Marcus just misses the perpetrator — or does he? It’s a jazz thing\, throwing extra notes into the chords—at Stax they didn’t do 6th chords.” \nGrammy-winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang cut the record live at the tiny DKDC bar in Memphis\, and recalls “it was more or less done after we cut it. Having received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Vocal Music Performance at LeMoyne Owen College\, along with studying under some of opera’s greatest powerhouses such as Grace Bumbry\, Vera Little\, even abroad in Pisa\, Italy under world-renowned Pilralba Sorga\, the classically trained voice known as D’Monet cannot be defined as a Jazz\, Rhythm\, and Blues or a Pop singer … but she has redefined the meaning of the traditional soul artist in what she calls “Alkaline Music” (music that heals). D’Monet allows you to travel on contorted twists of loves’ successes and failures; all while exercising her massive vocal prowess to the center stage. Nurturing her vocal gifts from the tender age of four\, along with developing her ear for the piano by age seven\, she now is a seasoned veteran. She’s the little sister to living legend and musical genius\, Jerry Lee Lewis. Raised on rock and roll-pumping piano and country\, Linda Gail grew up with a passion for music. A professional musician since fifteen\, she continues to tour sharing her high octane live show with music fans around the world. \nRobbie Fulks is a singer\, recording artist\, instrumentalist\, composer\, and songwriter. His early solo work — Country Love Songs (1996) and South Mouth (1997) — helped define the “alternative country” movement of the 1990s. \nRadio: multiple appearances on WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry”; PRI’s “Whadd’ya Know”; NPR’s “Fresh Air\,” “Mountain Stage\,” and “World Cafe”; and the syndicated “Acoustic Cafe” and “Laura Ingraham Show.” TV: PBS’s Austin City Limits; NBC’s Today\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, Later with Carson Daly\, and 30 Rock.
