SUMMARY:SOLD OUT Thelonious Monk: The Music of Monk
DESCRIPTION:Ticket sales for this event have closed\, as we have reached seating capacity. The next event in this series will be announced soon. \n***** \nTickets – $10 (purchase tickets on Eventbrite)\nCash bar\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | show at 7 p.m. \n\nJazz performance featuring Stephen Lee (piano)\, Johnny Yancey (Trumpet)\, Sylvester Sample (Acoustic Bass) and Nygel Yancey (Drums) celebrating the legacy of Thelonious Monk. \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\nAbout Stephen Lee:\nJazz pianist Stephen Lee cut his teeth playing at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City’s Greenwich Village in the late 90s\, but he’s been playing piano and organ since the age of eight. His passion for jazz was born in college\, when he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. \nStephen spent time as a touring musician with the Carnival Cruise Line and even did stints in Paris and Switzerland with the Legendary Paris Gospel Extravaganza and Jazz Life with the Janis Carter Quartet. His journey eventually took him to New York City\, where he worked as musical director of Manhattan’s Crenshaw Christian Center under Dr. Frederick Price. \nTough economic times eventually led Lee back to his hometown of Memphis. Stephen says being back in Memphis has turned out to be the best thing for his career. He’s finished his first album\, Songs in the Key of My Life\, and he plays regular gigs at the Westin Hotel downtown. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz Entertainment:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5:30-6 p.m. \nDiscussion 6-8 p.m. \n\n\nFacilitator: Nick Pena\nPresenting artists: Katie Diley\, Lily Anderson\, Judith Dierkes\n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \nOrganized by Crosstown Arts in partnership with ArtsMemphis ArtsAccelerator.

DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for work by Sara Moseley \nSara will give an artist talk on Saturday\, July 29\, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. \nArtist Statement:\n“I just want you to know that I create and arrange comics. Sometimes my comics are set in familiar worlds\, and sometimes they reference unfamiliar alternate realities\, yet they are always autobiographical. In my recent work\, I have been unfolding stories using both collaged materials and metaphorical drawings. These stories that will be displayed are not linear; they can be read in any order. Formed in 2005\, Nief-Norf was created by Illinois natives Andrew Bliss and Kerry O’Brien\, who took their ensemble’s name from a descriptor of strange sounds. Some say “bleep-blop”; they prefer “nief-norf.” During their undergraduate years as percussionists\, the “nief-norf” moniker came to stand for any music that was experimental or weird. Now based in Knoxville\, Nief-Norf celebrates experimental music through their annual Summer Festival and Call for Scores. \nAbout Luna Nova:\nMemphis-based Luna Nova Music supports performances of a wide range of twentieth century classics\, music of established living composers\, and premieres by emerging composers. With concerts\, master-classes and private instruction\, Luna Nova Music maintains a strong commitment to the education of performers and listeners and to the cause of new music in educational institutions and beyond. \nAbout chatterbird:\nchatterbird is a Nashville-based chamber music ensemble. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization\, chatterbird was founded in 2014 with a mission to explore alternative instrumentation and stylistic diversity in order to create thoughtful and inventive musical experiences. \nAbout Rob Junklas:\nRob Jungklas is a Memphis-based rock/blues musician\, singer\, and songwriter. He worked in the Memphis music circuit for 15 years before signing a deal with Manhattan Records and releasing the album Closer to the Flame in 1986. The album contained the hit “Make It Mean Something\,” which reached #86 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another song\, “Boystown\,” had a video directed by Godley & Creme (in the same rapid-jump-cut style of their video for Wang Chung’s “Everybody Have Fun Tonight”). “Hello Heaven\,” another song on the album\, appeared on the soundtrack of the 1987 movie The Principal. \nAbout Don Lifted:\nLawrence Matthews (a.k.a. Don Lifted) is a multi-disciplined fixture in the Memphis art scene\, predominantly working in music\, visual arts\, and film. Matthews’ style incorporates hiphop\, alternative rock and electronic music\, resulting in emotionally vulnerable storytelling and eclectic production. His album Alero was released in early 2017. \nAbout Blueshift Ensemble:\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. \n\nContinuum Music Festival is generously sponsored in part by: \nAmro Music\nThe University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music ...where music lives…\nSuzana Lightman\nAntique Warehouse Mall \n \n \n

\nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). SUMMARY:Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Collaborative installation of artist-designed place settings on view in Crosstown Arts’ East Atrium in Crosstown Concourse as part of the Concourse Opening Day Celebration. More than 80 artists are participating (full list below). \nAt a typical potluck\, individuals are asked to contribute a shared food item. But in this case\, individuals were invited to bring to the table their individual interpretation of a meal’s structural elements: a place setting.  Altogether\, these unique place settings create a large-scale collaborative table-top installation\, a collective visual feast. \nWhile a place setting is defined as “a complete set of dishes and cutlery provided for one person at a meal\,” these works look beyond a purely literal interpretation of the term. Each place setting personifies its maker. \nThis installation concept was inspired in part by artist Judy Chicago’s work\, The Dinner Party (1979).  \nArtists include Nate Renner\, Sarah Terry\, Erica Qualy\, Eric Clausen\, Mary Long\, Judith Dierkes\, Meredith Wilson\, Elizabeth Brothers\, Breezy Lucia\, Nicole Dorsey\, Beverly Dorsey\, Ethan Taylor\, Jan Shivley\, Danielle Sierra\, Peg Holton\, Valerie Shavers\, E. Stuart Lacey\, Baleigh Kuhar\, Zach Kremer\, Dale Martin\, Paula Kovarik\, Mary Jo Karimnia\, Jay Etkin\, Corie Walker\, Carol DeForest\, MaryRea Ragghianti\, Carrol Harding McTyre\, Keysha Warr\, Ashley Tew\, Wei Chu Su\, Katie Maish\, Danielle Sumler\, Sheri Bancroft\, Jonathan May\, Valerie Sparks\, Christiana Leibovich\, Jamin Carter\, Aundra McCoy\, RahLeeCoh Ishakarah\, Bryan Blankenship\, Fred Wimmer\, Deanna Hamsley\, Monica Bushong\, Renee Lasater\, Erika Roberts\, Jin Powell\, John Powell\, Alex Paulus\, Terri Phillips\, Kyle Statham\, Maria Ferguson\, Nicole Miller\, Lea Holland\, Mary K VanGieson\, Danielle Sumler\, Rachel McCasky\, Miriam Oliphant\, Karina Alvarez\, Cedar Nordbye\, Melissa Dunn\, Kevin Sutton\, Kimberly Scott\, Christian Alene\, Sadie Tomes\, Zachary Morgan\, Jonah Westbrook\, Carol Blumthal\, Kevin Burge\, Katie\, Schwehr\, Brantley Ellzey\, Hannah Coakley\, Alisha Wroblewski\, Karen Dixon\, Alyce Burr\, Eric Quick\, Chloe York\, Luke Ramsey\, Cassie Wiegmann\, Darla Linerode-Henson\, and Mary Vaux Hansen.
