SUMMARY:Screening of Roll Red Roll
DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis presents a screening of Roll Red Roll. \nAt a pre-season football party in small-town Steubenville\, Ohio\, a heinous crime took place: the assault of a teenage girl by members of the beloved high school football team. What transpired would garner national attention and result in the sentencing of two key offenders. \nBut it was the disturbing social media evidence uncovered online by crime blogger Alex Goddard that provoked the most powerful questions about the case and about the collusion of teen bystanders\, teachers\, parents\, and coaches to protect the assailants and discredit the victim. \nAs it painstakingly reconstructs the night of the crime and its aftermath\, Roll Red Roll uncovers the engrained rape culture at the heart of the incident\, acting as a cautionary tale about what can happen when teenage social media bullying runs rampant and adults look the other way. The film unflinchingly asks: “Why didn’t anyone stop it?” \nFeaturing a talkback panel with Memphis Area Women’s Council following the film. \nTrigger warning for details of real-life sexual assault. A counselor will be on site provided by Memphis Area Women’s Council.

SUMMARY:Olivia Lichterman Solo Show
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Lichterman will hold a solo show of her paintings. at 430 N. Cleveland. Her work will be on view from 6-9 pm on Friday\, April 26 and 10 am-1 pm on Saturday\, April 27. \nAbout the artist:\nTechnically\, Lichterman is an art student because she will not graduate from University of Tennessee until May\, however\, that is where the word “student” begins and ends in connection with her driving creative force.  A recipient of the 2018 Kimberly D. Iles Art Award\, Lichterman creates  2D  paintings\, and drawings – as well as 4D “time-based” art. \nHer innovative thinking is readily apparent to casual observers as well as art patrons in her choices of media. Even for works on canvas and paper\, she terms them drawings regardless of media used. Multiple layers of media are the preferred choice to offer texture and dimension. The result is stunning.

SUMMARY:You and Everybody Else are Already Artists: Why Everyone Should Make Work
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with Crosstown Arts resident artist Yazan Fahwami\nFree and open to the public \nSome might say that making art should be left to the professionals\, but the pursuit of genuine expression is actually an important part of every person’s well being and every healthy community’s foundation. Practicing artmaking is a fundamental human form of communication that provides crucial mental health benefits and is more accessible than ever before. We will discuss the social value of art from the perspective of the “average” person (i.e. a person with no educational or professional credentials as an artist) and offer ideas of how art might fit into our lives in an ideal world. \nHosting this discussion is Yazan\, a self-taught musician originally from New York\, currently a resident artist at Crosstown Arts. A short musical performance will follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:Alexander Paulus: WRONG WAY
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to present WRONG WAY\, a comprehensive solo show featuring recent paintings by Memphis-based artist Alexander Paulus. This will be Paulus’ first solo show at the 430 gallery in two years. In WRONG WAY\, Paulus aims to explore the experience of distorted realities. Through the show’s humor and witty imagery\, it challenges viewers to consider their own conceptions of reality. \nWRONG WAY exhibits a dynamic collection of Paulus’ newest paintings. In his latest series\, Paulus explores the theme of willful ignorance. Through his paintings\, Paulus is able to illustrate the misperceived realities of the willfully ignorant. Throughout the show\, there is a wonderful sense of dichotomy. Paulus’ work is simultaneously humorous and calamitous. The paintings in WRONG WAY feel surreal and bizarre though still grounded in reality thanks to Paulus’ sharp utilization of pop culture references. \nThroughout the collection\, Paulus’ use of bright colors and keen sense of humor plays against the darker undertones of many of the pieces. The duality of his work invites viewers into the piece and keeps them engaged. The show steers clear of pretension and welcomes a good laugh; Paulus’ paintings don’t pretend to take themselves too seriously. Simultaneously\, Paulus utilizes the accessibility of his work to enable viewers to step outside of their own reality and address broader societal issues in a nuanced way. WRONG WAY is a show made of so many layers\, it truly has something for everyone. \nAbout the artist:\nAlexander Paulus received his BFA at Southeast Missouri State University before earning an MFA from Memphis College of Art in 2009. Since then\, Paulus has remained a vital part of the Memphis art community as an Assistant Professor at Southwest Tennessee Community College as well as an artist resident at Crosstown Arts. Paulus’s work has gained attention both at home and abroad. His paintings have been shown in galleries throughout Memphis\, Nashville\, Dallas\, Houston\, Aspen\, St. Louis\, Los Angeles\, Edinburgh\, London and many others. Additionally\, his work has been published in New American Paintings\, Studio Visit magazine\, It’s Nice That Printed Pages magazine\, Electra magazine\, Ladybeard magazine\, Osso Magazine\, Neon Magazine\, Beautiful/Decay\, and Glasstire.
