SUMMARY:Beacon Block Party
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, August 23\, Crosstown Arts hosted a block party to celebrate the installation of the spinning bike wheel sculpture\, aka Beacon\, by artists Colin Kidder and Eli Gold. We were excited to recognize the artists and the community members who helped make this project happen. \nThe concept for Beacon was proposed by the artists at Crosstown Arts’ Memfeast 2 in April 2011 and was made possible with support from Memphians Harry Freeman and Sara Ratner. \nSpecial thanks to Sara Ratner and Harry Freeman\, Grinder Taber and Grinder\, Inc.\, Peddler Bike Shop and Outdoors\, Inc.\n\nMany thanks to the Fuel Food Truck\, Yolo and Dwayne Butcher for the food; and to Tout Lemon\, Jeremy Shrader\, Sean Murphy\, Jamie Harmon and Amurica photobooth\, Patrick and the drumline for entertainment\, and Andrew J. Breig for the beautiful photos of the event.\n\nArtists’ Statement \nBeacon is an eye-catching kinetic sculpture that moves dramatically in the natural wind and shines brightly with reflected sunlight. It is made out of 51 repurposed bicycle wheels. Beacon also draws attention to the developing Memphis Greenline\, which runs one block north of the sculpture. SUMMARY:MemFeast 2: Crosstown Public Art Projects
DESCRIPTION:FEAST is a recurring public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund emerging art-makers. MemFeast is Memphis’ local version founded and facilitated by Crosstown Arts\, dedicated to rethinking how the arts are financed and experienced communally. SUMMARY:MemFeast 3: Indie Memphis
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presented the third MemFeast in collaboration with Indie Memphis\, and sought proposals for short films based on the theme of neighborhood.At each MemFeast\, anyone from the community can buy a $25 ticket for an amazing\, locally sourced dinner\, along with drinks and a ballot to vote on the night’s presentations. During the meal\, a juried selection of local artists present proposals for their short film projects. At the end of the night\, diners vote for their favorite idea and the project with the most votes is awarded $5\,000 to produce the work. \nAll regional artists and filmmakers at any stage in their career are invited to submit proposals for MemFeast 3. DESCRIPTION:March 1-3\, 2012 at the Powerhouse \n\n                 \n\n\n    \nCrosstown Arts organized New York-based multimedia artist Rashaad Newsome’s first exhibition in Memphis\, a video installation\, Swag\, from 2011\, at the Powerhouse from March 1 – 3\, 2012. The artist has recently exhibited at PS1 MoMA\, the Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale. \nThe installation was a component of Our Vibe. Our City. at the Powerhouse presented by ArtsMemphis at Live From Memphis’ Music Video Showcase 7. It was the first in Crosstown Arts’ Visiting Artist Series\, sponsored by VO2 Networx\, bringing internationally recognized artists to Memphis to exhibit work and engage with the community. \nRashaad Newsome was born in New Orleans in 1979 and currently lives and works in New York. His work was recently exhibited at the Pompidou Center\, Paris\, the 2011 Venice Biennale\, the 2010 Whitney Biennial at The Whitney Museum of American Art\, Greater New York 2010 at MoMA PS1 and Dance/Draw at the ICA Boston. Forthcoming projects and performances include Shade Compositions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in April 2012 and SEVEN.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Discussion with Umberto Crenca\, Artistic Director + Founder\, AS220 \nCrenca’s presentation “Leading a Cultural Renaissance in Providence\, RI” shared the story of how AS220\, a non-profit community space in Providence\, RI\, has been a part of the city’s transformation and is now celebrating its 25th year at the core of the city’s vibrant art scene. AS220 has grown from a small grassroots organization occupying a single rented room to a nationally recognized art and cultural institution with three mixed-use buildings in the city’s downtown. AS220 builds new audiences and infrastructure for artists\, providing support through affordable learning opportunities\, employment opportunities\, access to equipment and facilities\, and low rent live and work studios.

DESCRIPTION:Winning Project: Memfeast 2 \nFrom the Commercial Appeal: \nCrosstown canvas comes alive with color\nFrom Staff Reports\nTuesday\, September 20\, 2011 \n\nA large crowd on Friday night witnessed the artful lighting of the main body of the old Sears Crosstown building. \nScores of cars pulled into the parking lot on Cleveland near North Parkway for a different kind of tailgating event. \nNearly 300 windows form a large grid on the south side of the vacant building. About 40 windows in the middle were used by artist Robin Salant as a canvas for her colorful\, moving light\, all to the delight of onlookers. \nNext\, eyes will turn to the art deco tower at the front of the 1.4 million-square-foot building. \nSalant will light its windows with moving color starting at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. \nShe won a Crosstown Arts commission in a MemFEAST event to create art that brings attention to the planned redevelopment of the long-vacant building. \nFlipping the switch on the tower lights will be part of another event at Cleveland at North Parkway on Oct. 22.
