SUMMARY:The Mystic
DESCRIPTION:On the last Tuesday of each month\, join Crosstown Concourse neighbors and friends for The Mystic. \nSo\, what is The Mystic?\nThe Mystic is a catalyst; through music\, story\, silence and dialogue\, we hope to strengthen our attachment to hopes and dreams. In the mystic\, diversity is a prerequisite for all creativity\, which is why Crosstown Concourse is the perfect home. In The Mystic\, the world is far-better served by different beliefs than it could ever be if limited by rigid uniformity. \nAnd if this doesn’t rock your gypsy soul\, the goal of The Mystic is to not feel better but get better at feeling. \nThe Mystic is hosted by a rotating panel including Rabbi Micah Greenstein\, Chris Miner\, Dr. Scott Morris\, Dr. Sonia Walker and Kirk Whalum. \nAll guests welcome to linger for conversation following our program.

SUMMARY:West Philadelphia Orchestra at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:With a line-up of Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands\, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. \nDoors open at 7 pm | performance at 7:30pm\nTickets: $10 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThey began playing Romanian ballads\, Macedonian folk-dance songs\, Bulgarian wedding music\, and Klezmer in late 2006\, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds\, like jazz and classical\, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band\, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass\, they inspire audiences to hold hands\, gyrate\, howl\, and otherwise slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.

SUMMARY:The Music from the Hard-Bop Years (1955-1965)
DESCRIPTION:The students and faculty from The Memphis Jazz Workshop present The Music from the Hard-Bop Years (1955-1965). Featuring the music of jazz artists\, such as Lee Morgan\, Art Blakey\, Herbie Hancock\, Joe Henderson\, Cannonball Adderley\, Bobby Timmons\, Wayne Shorter\, and more. \nThis event is chaired by jazz pianist and educator Stephen Lee. Featuring Stephen Lee (piano)\, Gary Topper (tenor sax)\, Johnny Yancey (trumpet)\, Tyler Cain (acoustic bass)\, and Nygel Yancey (drums). \nDoors at 6:30 pm | performance at 7 pm\nTickets: $15 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\n \nAbout Stephen Lee:\nStephen Lee is a Memphis native who has come full circle.  His talent and love for the music carried him miles from home\, only to have him return with the whole-hearted desire to enrich and serve his home community.  Stephen found a passion for piano at the age of 8 and has never once looked back. \nWhile at the University of Tennessee\, he studied with jazz legend Donald Brown before moving to New York City to formally launch his career as a jazz artist.  The move to New York City served him well. It proved to be fertile ground\, providing him with access to many of the giants of jazz and landing him in some of the most hallowed venues in the country like Smalls\, Birdland and Iridium. During his tenure in the City\, he shared a stage with a litany of stars like Esperanza Spaulding\, Corcoran Holt\, Ulysses Owens Jr\, Billy Johnson\, Gregory Porter and highly lauded fellow Memphian Kirk Whalum. \nIn addition to his performance credentials\, he served as Musical Director for Manhattan’s Crenshaw Christian Center under the leadership of Dr. Fredrick Price (one of the most well-known names in ministry).  In New York\, he rounded out his studies with a Bachelor’s in Jazz Performance from City College and a Master’s degree in Education from Freed Hardeman University. \nUpon his move to Memphis in 2009\, the growth\, opportunities\, and accolades continued. In 2012\, Stephen received the Rhythm of Gospel Award. In 2013\, he was nominated for First Round in the Stellar Gospel Awards for his album debut\, Music in the Key of my Life.  In 2017\, he won the Steinway and Sons Top Teacher Award and the Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Award. \nEven still\, he moves forward in the spirit of service and humility\, firmly committed to the youth and music arts community in Memphis. He values the importance and impact of the arts for young people\, which understands firsthand. He says\, “Being connected to something you feel passionate about makes a huge difference in a kid’s life. \nLee is also Founder/CEO of the Memphis Jazz Workshop\, a non-profit organization committed to cultivating young musicians by providing learning and performance opportunities with professional artists while embracing Jazz as our regional art form. Memphis Jazz Workshop was formed under the umbrella of LeeJazzOmega. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

SUMMARY:The Groove feat. Black Cream
DESCRIPTION:Join for a soul performance by Black Cream at The Groove in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nThe Groove is a series showcasing some of the funkiest bands and musicians around. In this event\, the band — rather than the lead singer or frontman — is the star. Each month will feature performances in the premier listening environment\, The Green Room — Crosstown Arts’ new venue for live music. Find your groove as we highlight an array of both well-known and little-known musicians. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 7:30 pm \nBlack Cream is a newly formed conglomerate of some of Memphis’ musical prodigies. Lead guitarist and good soul TO Crivens flies high with his attention to feel and detail during his solos that make the room stand still. \nThe Band is anchored by bassist\, Dr. Derek Brassel\, the coolest cat in every room\, is unofficially certified as the groove doctor and his bass lines are spell binding. On drums and vocals\, Courtney Barnes displays jaw-dropping skill and vocal finesse\, oftime harmonizing with his brother\, Chris Barnes\, who rounds out the Black Cream team on vocals and percussion with the charismatic presence of a baptist preacher and the vocal abilities of your favorite soul crooner.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Residency Filmmaker Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Crosstown Arts Residents Pierre Primetens and Matteo Servente as they screen some of their short films and discuss their process as filmmakers. \nDoors at 7 pm | screening & talk at 7:30 pm\nFree and open to the public\nLocation: Crosstown Theater \nFood/beverages are allowed inside Crosstown Theater\, and guests are encouraged to pick up a snack from one of Concourse’s restaurants. Stop by Art Bar and have a drink before the show. \n\nPierre Primetens \nPierre Primetens is an author and documentary filmmaker and has directed such titles as the autobiographical trilogy Un voyage au Portugal (A Trip to Portugal)\, Des vacances à l’Ile Maurice (A Journey in Mauritus)\, and Contre toi (Against You) about his estrangement from his mother’s family and their eventual reconciliation.  His latest documentary\, La fête des garçons (The Boys Ritual)\, is about a rite of passage in a remote village of northern Portugal. His movies have been presented in many French and international film festivals and broadcast on European television. He creates radio documentaries\, writes television screenplays\, serves on several cinema committees and leads screenplay\, film study\, and directing workshops. He is currently writing his first fictional feature film. \n“My sense of observation and an almost scientific rigor are essential in carrying out my projects.  I alternate between different working formats: I go to the site where I wish to film and observe the lifestyles of the residents there from an anthropological point of view\, complemented by periods of writing where I build a fictional narrative based on what I have observed and the material I’ve collected.” \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPierre Primetens will be screening: \nA TRIP TO PORTUGAL\nMy mother died when I was five years old. My father never spoke to me about her. Last year\, my mother’s family\, who is Portuguese\, tracked me down. After studying in Italy\, France\, and Australia\, he moved to the US in 2008 and has since directed award-winning short films and documentaries. Matteo’s current projects include a narrative feature film called Nessun Dorma (No One Sleeps)\, a magical-realistic drama about a 10-year-old boy who drives across state lines in a stolen Trans-Am searching for a mermaid\, and the documentary A Legacy Suspended\, about his work with The Lynching Sites Project of Memphis. He is also involved in youth education as an elementary teacher and mentor for young filmmakers. \n“Making films is not only a wonderful opportunity but also a great privilege. Doing it in Memphis makes it a big responsibility.” \n \nMatteo Servante will be screening: \nDAMMI IL LA \nThe lives of three very different people become interwoven when Pietro stops what he’s been doing\, comes down off of his stilts\, breaks down\, and has to be put back together by Marguerite. \nWE GO ON\nTwo old gents whose numbers have been called up yonder are in hospice care. Their conversations ricochet around like a shootout in a fantasy factory\, as they both relish the last communication left to them.

SUMMARY:Alexander Paulus: WRONG WAY
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to present WRONG WAY\, a comprehensive solo show featuring recent paintings by Memphis-based artist Alexander Paulus. This will be Paulus’ first solo show at the 430 gallery in two years. In WRONG WAY\, Paulus aims to explore the experience of distorted realities. Through the show’s humor and witty imagery\, it challenges viewers to consider their own conceptions of reality. \nWRONG WAY exhibits a dynamic collection of Paulus’ newest paintings. In his latest series\, Paulus explores the theme of willful ignorance. Through his paintings\, Paulus is able to illustrate the misperceived realities of the willfully ignorant. Throughout the show\, there is a wonderful sense of dichotomy. Paulus’ work is simultaneously humorous and calamitous. The paintings in WRONG WAY feel surreal and bizarre though still grounded in reality thanks to Paulus’ sharp utilization of pop culture references. \nThroughout the collection\, Paulus’ use of bright colors and keen sense of humor plays against the darker undertones of many of the pieces. The duality of his work invites viewers into the piece and keeps them engaged. The show steers clear of pretension and welcomes a good laugh; Paulus’ paintings don’t pretend to take themselves too seriously. Simultaneously\, Paulus utilizes the accessibility of his work to enable viewers to step outside of their own reality and address broader societal issues in a nuanced way. WRONG WAY is a show made of so many layers\, it truly has something for everyone. \nAbout the artist:\nAlexander Paulus received his BFA at Southeast Missouri State University before earning an MFA from Memphis College of Art in 2009. Since then\, Paulus has remained a vital part of the Memphis art community as an Assistant Professor at Southwest Tennessee Community College as well as an artist resident at Crosstown Arts. Paulus’s work has gained attention both at home and abroad. His paintings have been shown in galleries throughout Memphis\, Nashville\, Dallas\, Houston\, Aspen\, St. Louis\, Los Angeles\, Edinburgh\, London and many others. Additionally\, his work has been published in New American Paintings\, Studio Visit magazine\, It’s Nice That Printed Pages magazine\, Electra magazine\, Ladybeard magazine\, Osso Magazine\, Neon Magazine\, Beautiful/Decay\, and Glasstire.

SUMMARY:Songwriters In The Round: Mark Stuart\, Brandon Kinder\, and Josh Cosby
DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for Songwriters in the Round\, featuring Mark Stuart\, Brandon Kinder\, and Josh Cosby. \nTickets: $10\nDoors open at 7:00pm\nPerformance at 7:30pm \nAbout the musicians: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMark Stuart\nAs a sideman\, Mark Edgar Stuart has toured with Grammy winner Alvin\nYoungblood Hart\, Jack Oblivian\, and John Paul Keith and cut two records\nwith singer-songwriter Cory Branan. With little fuss or fanfare he\nbecame the go-to bass player for an elite group of record producers\nand artists. In 2010\, he put down his bass\, picked up a guitar\, and\nstarted writing songs he never thought anybody outside his family\nwould ever hear. It’s possible nobody ever would have heard them\neither\, if not for the encouragement of his colleagues. His debut\nearned him “Record Of The Year” by The Memphis Flyer. Mark soaks in\ndetails like a sponge\, and spending so much time in the company of\nstrong songwriters\, it was only a matter of time before these humble\,\nhumorous and\, and sometimes heartbreaking stories found a way to get\nout. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBrandon Kinder\nKinder\, raised in – and now returned to – Memphis\, has spent all of his\nadult life in music. Forming The Rocketboys during college in Abilene\,\nTX\, he and the group moved to Austin thereafter\, gaining much critical\npraise for their EPs and albums. They continue to grow\, having\nrecently toured the US for the sixth time\, as well as a\nsoon-to-be-repeated tour of Germany. However\, along the way\, and in\nsearch of a more personal voice Kinder took a handful of demos and\nreleased a solo project\, “The Wealthy West Volume 1.” Musically\, The\nWealthy West sits between the storied troubadours of the ’60s and\nmodern solo artists such as Bon Iver and Father John Misty; there is a\ngritty quality to his delicate voice – with just enough pain hidden\nbehind fragile beauty to keep the listener guessing. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJosh Cosby\nIt was a dark night\, like many before it in Memphis. Joshua\nAndrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar\, case-less\,\nslung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down\, not for\nmoney but for a story. He explained to Cosby how he had written a song\nabout his ex-wife Micey. There\, on that dimly lit street occurred an\nexchange\, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the\nultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways\, this man revealed his name to\nbe Star. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most\ninventive bands: Star & Micey.

SUMMARY:Dean Owens and Wild Ponies at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Scottish singer-songwriter Dean Owens join Nashville-based Wild Ponies for a performance in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts. \nTickets: $10\nDoors open at 7pm\nPerformance at 7:30pm \nDean Owens is one Scotland’s finest singer-songwriters. Armed with a searingly soulful voice\, skillfully crafted stories and memorably heart-twisting melodies\, he is a compelling and engaging live performer\, with an emotional hurricane of stories and songs. Dean was the frontman of the much-loved Scottish Americana band The Felsons. His music has taken him far and wide\, including Europe\, USA\, and Australia\, touring with artists such as the Mavericks\, Steve Earle\, and Emmylou Harris. \nAlthough they’re based in Nashville\, Wild Ponies have always looked to Southwest Virginia — where bandmates Doug and Telisha Williams were both born and raised — for inspiration. Growing up\, a young Doug Williams spent many an hour watching and learning as his grandfather played banjo alongside local musical legends like Snake and Kyle Dean. Although both of his grandparents have now passed away\, they would surely be proud to see Doug and Telisha gathered in the shed with Snake\, Kyle Dean\, Kilby\, and a diverse handful of the best musicians from Nashville. The result is a broad\, bold approach to Appalachian music\, created by a multi-cultural band whose members span several generations.

SUMMARY:You and Everybody Else are Already Artists: Why Everyone Should Make Work
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with Crosstown Arts resident artist Yazan Fahwami\nFree and open to the public \nSome might say that making art should be left to the professionals\, but the pursuit of genuine expression is actually an important part of every person’s well being and every healthy community’s foundation. Practicing artmaking is a fundamental human form of communication that provides crucial mental health benefits and is more accessible than ever before. We will discuss the social value of art from the perspective of the “average” person (i.e. a person with no educational or professional credentials as an artist) and offer ideas of how art might fit into our lives in an ideal world. \nHosting this discussion is Yazan\, a self-taught musician originally from New York\, currently a resident artist at Crosstown Arts. A short musical performance will follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:Babu Press Presents: Maybe\, a Mouse
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy “Maybe\, a Mouse\,” an original children’s story featuring audience participation and musical accompaniment by members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Created by MSO principal oboist Joseph Salvalaggio\, Babu Press performances use classical music to help kids develop an appreciation for the arts and foster a love of reading. The performances are entertaining for audiences of all ages\, from toddlers to adults. \nThis performance features MSO musicians Barrie Cooper (violin)\, Mark Wallace (cello)\, and Joseph Salvalaggio (oboe) and will be narrated by Todd Berry. \nAbout “Maybe\, a Mouse”:\nWhen the lights go down on a lonely toy maker’s workshop all of the toys are just starting to wake up for play time\, except for one little wind-up mouse named Maybe. While the other toys play\, she dreams that one day she might become a real live mouse. Little does she suspect the danger and adventure that await her on her path to mouse-dom. This story of the transformative power of kindness is set to the music of Dvorak\, Wagner\, Rimsky-Korsakov\, Humperdinck\, Dukas\, and original music by oboist\, Joey Salvalaggio.
