In choro\, the flavors of immigrant mazurkas\, polkas\, and waltzes are seasoned with smoky tango and simmered in an irresistible Afro-Brazilian groove. From Heitor Villa-Lobos to Darius Milhaud to Stan Getz to Walt Disney\, choro has inspired artists of all stripes and is a window into an entire musical world. Catchy and melodic – easy to appreciate – yet bursting with kaleidoscopic virtuosity that fascinates the listener\, choro has been well-described as “classical music played with bare feet and callused hands.” \n\nAbout Choro das 3:\nA Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father\, Choro das 3 began to play as a band in 2002. Flutist Corina doubles on piccolo\, trading lead and counterpoint roles with Elisa on bandolim (Brazilian mandolin)\, tenor banjo\, clarinet\, and accordion; Elisa also writes and performs at the piano. Lia anchors the harmony and provides the bass lines so essential to choro with the violão de sete cordas (7-string guitar). Their father\, Eduardo\, supplies the rhythmic heartbeat with the pandeiro (Brazilian frame drum). \nChoro das 3 shares a tradition that’s over 100 years old\, one that continues to attract new composers\, musicians\, and audiences. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Dehanza Rogers\, Tom Cho\, and Marcus Tate\, Aubree Penney\, Baishui Gan\, and Melanie Manos will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

Curated by Crosstown Arts resident artist Aubree Penney. \nFeatured artists: Sully Allen\, Jesse Butcher\, Zahria Cook\, Dehanza\, Mulanre “Eddie” Gan\, Mary Jo Karimnia\, Melanie Manos\, Jeremiah Matthews and Kayla Selby\, Natalie Minik\, Alex Paulus\, Cat Peña\, Nick Peña\, Terri Phillips\, Corkey Sinks\, Joey Slaughter\, Jessica Weaver\, Terri Weaver\, and Tad Lauritzen Wright. \nEngaging with the architecture and history of Crosstown and the residues of both its predecessor Sears and its subsequent transformation\, group exhibition Negative Space operates within unused miniscule spaces in public areas of Crosstown Concourse. Numerous holes\, nails\, and small architectural elements pockmark walls and columns\, bearing evidence of past usage. Negative Space invites current Artists in Residence at Crosstown Arts as well as local community artists to embrace these underutilized spaces for art display. Negative Space offers artists and audience members an opportunity both to explore the Concourse and to consider scale and intimacy in public art display.

On view through August 25. \nFeatured artists: Sully Allen\, Jesse Butcher\, Zahria Cook\, Dehanza\, Mulanre “Eddie” Gan\, Mary Jo Karimnia\, Melanie Manos\, Jeremiah Matthews and Kayla Selby\, Natalie Minik\, Alex Paulus\, Cat Peña\, Nick Peña\, Terri Phillips\, Corkey Sinks\, Joey Slaughter\, Jessica Weaver\, Terri Weaver\, and Tad Lauritzen Wright. \nEngaging with the architecture and history of Crosstown and the residues of both its predecessor Sears and its subsequent transformation\, group exhibition Negative Space operates within unused miniscule spaces in public areas of Crosstown Concourse. Numerous holes\, nails\, and small architectural elements pockmark walls and columns\, bearing evidence of past usage. Negative Space invites current Artists in Residence at Crosstown Arts as well as local community artists to embrace these underutilized spaces for art display. The sequences illustrate such issues as community protection vs. the desire for rehabilitation\, the range and the limits of the choices available to the court\, the psychology of the offender\, and the constitutional and procedural questions involved in administering a juvenile court. The Bluff City has been his home since then. \nSoon after settling in\, Art found guidance in two teachers who would direct his career path and help develop his personal understanding of the saxophone. Allen Rippe\, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and the legendary musician and teacher Lannie McMillan mentored Edmaiston through the early ’90s\, providing chances to grow and offering support when needed. \n\nCountless hours of practice and late nights jamming with the finest musicians in Memphis and around the world has brought Edmaiston to where he is today — a Grammy-nominated seasoned professional of stage and studio. Over the years\, Art has played for thousands of tourists on world-famous Beale Street\, backing up Preston Shannon\, FreeWorld\, Ruby Wilson and more recently\, Susan Marshall and John Paul Keith. Edmaiston has recorded and toured internationally with such artists as Gregg Allman\, Al Green\, Bobby “Blue” Bland and the International Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater\, as well as performing on-stage with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world\, such as Stevie Wonder\, Dr. John\, Ray Parker Jr. and Justin Timberlake. \nAlways active in the studio\, there are several new recording projects featuring Art coming soon from the Joe Restivo 4\, the Love Light Orchestra\, Marc Edgar Stuart\, Marcella & Her Lovers\, and others. This will be the last time you’ll be able to see the shows. We’re going to announce the viewer’s choice awards\, debut the community quilt made during Maria Shell’s workshop in June\, and acknowledge all of the artists and volunteers who made these shows a reality. \nAnnouncement of the Viewer’s Choice awards will be at 2pm. We will be asking artists to take their quilts down during the celebration. Artists are encouraged to take pictures of your quilt and post them on the Stitched2019 Facebook page as a remembrance of the events. If you will be picking up a quilt for another person you will need to have written permission from that person. \nBLUE show posters will be available at the event. \nIf you have a quilt in the show and are unable to attend the event\, your quilt will be available for pick up from July 29-August 2 from 12-4pm\, Tuesday through Friday at Crosstown Arts. Note that the galleries are closed on Monday.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for an album release concert with Memphis’ own Joe Restivo\, a member of the Bo-Keys. \n“One of the city’s truly special Memphis music experiences.” – Bob Mehr\, Memphis Commercial Appeal \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30 pm | show at 8 pm \n\nAbout Joe Restivo:\nMemphis’ Joe Restivo – member of beloved soul band the Bo-Keys – will release ‘Where’s Joe?\,’ his debut album\, July 12 on Blue Barrel Records (the non-profit label arm of Archer Records). The album crystalizes his interest in Memphis jazz music made at the intersection of jump blues\, rhythm & blues\, and jazz. This is swinging\, fun music\, jazz for hipster cocktail parties\, which Restivo has been refining with his weekly residency at Lafeyette’s over four years. \nRestivo began playing clubs in the transitional period of the 1990s\, when the blues\, jazz\, and rhythm & blues masters could still be found on Beale Street and elsewhere in Memphis. Restivo would play regularly with organ master Charlie Wood and piano great Mose Vinson and would see Newborn play every week. “He had that bebop element but it was also kind of dangerous and had a rock and roll thing\, too. It wasn’t purely serious. But he was also playing sophisticated music\,” remembers Restivo\, recalling that he also used to see old-school\, jazz-based Beale Street players like saxophonists Fats Sonny and Fred Ford\, organist Honeymoon Gardner\, and trumpet player Noki Taylor\, play live frequently. “You don’t hear anyone make the guitar growl a little bit in jazz. These sounds from that era are brackish water. Is Tiny Grimes a rock and roll artist or is he a jazz artist or is he jump blues?\,” he asks\, rhetorically. Taking these influences and making them his own\, Restivo’s masterful guitar work also recalls national greats such as Oscar Moore (Nat King Cole)\, Loman Pauling (The 5 Royales)\, Tal Farlow\, and Hank Garland. \nYet the album is no revival\, mostly fueled by original compositions. Take\, for example\, the film noir-inspired “Last Starlight Motel” or the ballad “Thelma.” He recalls\, “’Thelma’ I named after my grandmother because it reminded me of being in her kitchen\, with her smoking cigarettes.” Even the covers are done in a new style. Restivo adds\, “We played Bill Jennings and Tiny Grimes but we found our own way with them.” The standard “House of the Rising Sun” shows up in 3:4 time. Then there’s the raunchy Memphis instrumental bonus track\, which recalls music from Sun Studio. \nRestivo calls upon bassist Tim Goodwin and drummer Tom Lonardo\, a Memphis rhythm section that’s worked together and apart for over forty years\, playing behind every major touring jazz artist. Lonardo is recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Memphis Musical Heritage Foundation and has worked with who’s who\, such as Mose Allison\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Bo Diddley\, The Charlie Wood Trio\, Jim Dickinson\, and Calvin Newborn. Art Edmaiston\, a veteran of Gregg Allman and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s bands\, adds his saxophone. \nWith the Bo-Keys\, Restivo has performed in venues and festivals all over the world including Lincoln Center\, London’s O2 Stadium\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, as well as shared stages with luminaries in soul\, jazz and blues including Syl Johnson\, Newborn\, Bobby Rush\, and Carla Thomas. A graduate of the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at New School University in NYC\, Restivo has also played with rising soul singer Robert Finley. He spins Memphis jazz as a DJ on his weekly radio show on WEVL. \nRestivo plays a late 1940s Epiphone Zephyr Deluxe. “I don’t have any proof but this guitar was supposedly played by a guy who played with Bob Wills\,” says Restivo with a smile\, though he later found some evidence online to support the claim. \n‘Where’s Joe?’ was recorded at Archer Record’s Music+Arts Studio in Memphis\, TN to analog tape with no overdubs.

The Spirit and The Spine\, Nothing To Fade\, and Blackbirds on Madjack Records\, and 7 Sisters. \nHe issued his debut LP\, Closer to the Flame\, in 1987 on Manhattan Records. On the strength of an MTV video aired for the single “Boys Town\,” the record garnered airplay and modest chart success for his effort\, while creating the iconic regional anthem “Memphis Thing.” \nThe more reflective Work Songs for a New Moon\, that followed two years later on RCA\, showcased Jungklas’ nuanced blend of pop songwriting and Memphis style R&B. \nLee Froelich calls Rob’s songs “profane and poetic\, haunted by ghost and damnation” and the sentiments are echoed by the likes of Rolling Stones’ David Fricke who describes the sounds as “bloodied bottleneck guitar and choked prayer.”

Mookie is the pizza delivery man for Salvatore. Salvatore has owned his pizzeria for 25 years and seen a change from being a neighborhood made of Italian immigrants to one mostly inhabited by African American and Puerto Rican residents.  Salvatore loves the community but is rooted in his own traditions. The pizzeria features a Wall of Fame that only highlights Italians. The film really begins when neighborhood activist Buggin’ Out questions Salvatore as to why there are no pictures of black celebrities in a neighborhood made up almost entirely of black and brown people. Often cited as one of the greatest films ever made\, preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Film Registry\, DO THE RIGHT THING features Spike Lee himself as Mookie\, Rosie Perez\, Danny Aiello\, John Turturro\, and OSSIE DAVIS AND RUBY DEE!

Painting Blue is due out on August 16th on Nine Mile Records. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | show at 8 pm \n\nAbout Amy LaVere:\nThere’s something uniquely fun about Amy LaVere\, even when she’s breaking your heart. \n\nShe is well known among songwriters and critics alike. NPR’s Robert Siegel says she“specializes in lyrics that are more barbed than her sweet soprano prepares you for.” Her growing catalogue of material and steady critical acclaim suggest a first-tier presence on the Americana and indie-folk/punk circuits. Her latest album Painting Blue comes out August 16th on Nine Mile Records (Glorietta\, David Wax Museum\, Carson McHone\, Patrick Sweany\, Greyhounds). \nAmy’s live performances are anything but predictable. She might appear on stage with a full band\, sporting a mask and pink wig\, or simply be a natural in blue jeans and sandals\, but her upright bass and clever song delivery are constants. Her voice is at once the bully and the victim. She’s performed in venues as wide-ranging as St. Andrew’s Hall in London and Memphis’ famed dive bar Earnestine and Hazel’s. There’s no room she can’t find an audience in and charm it to pieces. \nBorn in Shreveport\, Louisiana\, this future bard moved continuously throughout childhood due to her father’s job. She spent notable parts of her life in Canada\, Texas\, Maryland\, Illinois\, Ohio and Michigan. Outside of Detroit and only just entering high school\, Amy formed her first band and began writing and performing.  Music fans first discovered this “sweet soprano” on This World is Not My Home in 2005\, but it was her Jim Dickinson-produced breakout album Anchors & Anvils two years later that put Amy LaVere on the map. Stranger Me\, the 2011 release on Archer Records\, was called “the break-up album of the year” by Spin. Paste said it was “among the year’s best\,” and it earned a first listen feature from NPR’s All Things Considered. She followed it in 2014 with another critical smash: Runaway’s Diary\, a concept album based on her own experience as a teenage runaway\, produced by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars).  American Songwriter called it “boundary pushing… heartfelt\, reflective\, challenging and consistently compelling.” NPR Music’s Robert Christgau said it was her best yet.  Of Hallelujah I’m A Dreamer (Archer Records\, 2015) No Depression said simply: “pure bliss.” \nIn addition to her solo records and a tireless touring schedule\, Amy enjoys working with otherartists. In 2012 she joined an all-star collaboration called The Wandering\, composed of Amy\, Luther Dickinson\, Shannon McNally\, Sharde Thomas and Valerie June. They released Go On Now\, You Can’t Stay Here (Songs Of The South\, 2012) to critical acclaim and sold-out shows. \nIn the afterglow of The Wandering\, Amy and Shannon McNally hit the road together and released an EP titled Chasing the Ghost\, The Rehearsal Sessions (Archer Records\, 2012)\,  featuring songs from both artists recorded live during rehearsals for the tour. Amy next paired up with noted Memphis rocker John Paul Keith to create Motel Mirrors. Their styles clearly complemented one another\, which made for magic on stage and in the recording studio. Their eponymous vinyl EP release was named one of the “10 Essential Albums of 2013” by No Depression. In 2017 Motel Mirrors released a full length effort\, In the Meantime; this record had the addition of some Will Sexton co-writes and his powerful guitar work throughout. Motel Mirrors later released a live recording\, Gotta Lotta Rhythm\, on the Italian label Wild Honey. \nPainting Blue\, produced by her husband Will Sexton\, captures perfectly the moment that Amy is in. Will Sexton’s masterful production and Amy’s soft\, clarinet-like vocal pour over you\, pushing and pulling\, stirring and calming.  As we’ve come to expect\, this record is honest\, revealing and sounds uniquely like no one else.

This month’s guest:  contemporary soul/jazz saxophonist Michael Lington. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Michael Lington:\nGrowing up in Copenhagen\, Michael Lington remembers the precise moment he decided he needed to move to America if he was going to seriously pursue a career in music. He was still a budding musician at the time\, who loved several different genres: jazz\, pop\, R&B\, and more — as a young boy he’d even met the American swing legend Benny Goodman. But it wasn’t until he was on the verge of turning 20 that Lington—now recognized as one of the most creative and successful contemporary soul and jazz saxophonists in the world—made his fateful decision. \nImmersing himself in his favorite music — David Sanborn\, Michael Brecker\, King Curtis\, Hank Crawford\, Cannonball Adderley\, and Grover Washington — Michael started out on clarinet but soon found his true calling\, the saxophone. Already established in his homeland\, he made the move to the U.S. and began to grab a foothold in the music industry there. Eventually\, after much hard work\, his place within the American and international music scene came to him naturally. \nMichael Lington is releasing Silver Lining\, his 10th solo album\, the followup to 2016’s critically acclaimed Second Nature. Silver Lining features mostly original compositions by Lington and producer/co-arranger/keyboardist Barry Eastmond\, as well as a pair of stunning\, choice covers. \nSilver Lining begins with “City Life\,” one of three consecutives Eastmond/Lington compositions at the top of the track list. It features guitar from the legendary Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. Following the next two originals\, “Break the Ice” and “Déjà Vu\,” arrives the first interpretative piece on Silver Lining\, Curtis Mayfield’s classic\, timeless ballad “People Get Ready\,” which the late R&B icon recorded with the Impressions in 1965. To sing the song\, Lington recruited 2017 Grammy winner William Bell\, himself a soul legend who recorded for Memphis’ Stax Records back in its heyday. \nLington has learned much about business as his musical career progresses\, eventually leading him and his business partner\, Roy McClurg\, to launch his own record label\, Copenhagen Music\, in 2014. Lington is also an entrepreneur outside of music\, operating his own wine and cigar companies. He continues to tour\, performing as many as 80 concerts per year\, and has played in more than 40 countries\, working many of the world’s most prestigious venues. He’s even performed for a U.S. President.
