SUMMARY:Marc Ribot
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents guitarist Marc Ribot in The Green Room. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $20 \nEnigmatic guitarist Marc Ribot has released six very diverse solo guitar albums\, including John Zorn’s Book of Heads\, Plays the Works of Frantz Casseus\, Saints\, Don’t Blame Me\, Exercises in Futility\, and 2010’s Silent Movies (Pi Recordings). Silent Movies has been described as a “down-in-mouth-near master piece” by the Village Voice and has landed on several “Best of 2010” lists\, including in the LA Times. His live solo performances are unpredictable events which may draw upon a sonic matrix of memory\, free improvisation\, zeitgeist\, extra-terrestrial radio signals\, and much more — always leaving the listener on the edge of their seats. \n“In the hear-a-pin-drop setting of Cafe Oto\, Ribot’s intense\, heartfelt commitment invited not only the closest of listening but also allowed scrutiny of his technical approach\, offering a minor spectacle\, as well as a rare\, transportative musical experience.” – London Jazz News\, review of his 2015 OTO residency \n“… he can sit down with just his guitar and simultaneously confound you with technique\, beauty\, and surprise.” – John Garratt and Will Layman\, PopMatters Picks: The Best Music of 2010 for the album “Silent Movies.” \n“In discussing the guitarist Marc Ribot\, it’s more efficient to wonder what he hasn’t done than to list what he has actually accomplished. Across four decades\, Ribot’s career has spanned smooth soul and gnarled blues\, blaring no wave and elegant film scores\, solo composer roles\, and Tom Waits supporting work; that’s only a sliver of his prolificacy. … Though his solo range is only slightly less boundless than his overall discography\, he favors quiet\, intricate improvisations around standards that you will recognize in flashes but will rarely sound repetitive of their sources. Ribot is a master of timing\, tone\, and taste\, with a bank of experiences so vast and varied he can navigate his way through any song or situation with panache. Consider this visit a master lesson.” —Grayson Haver Currin\, indyweek.com

SUMMARY:Garrison Starr & Matthew Mayfield at Crosstown Arts
DESCRIPTION:The artists have requested proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test for this event. Please be prepared to present your vaccination card or a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours at check-in. \nCrosstown Arts presents Garrison Starr and Matthew Mayfield in The Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVIP 6:45 pm | Doors 7 pm | Show 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 advance | $25 day of show | $75 VIP* \n* VIP includes early admission and 15-minute Q&A with artists before the show \nSinger/songwriter Garrison Starr is an individualist with a streak of passion. Having spent her life growing up in the South\, her work mixes up Nashville country twang with a hearty rock appeal. \nMatthew Mayfield is an American singer-songwriter from Birmingham\, Alabama. Originally the lead singer in the group Moses Mayfield\, which disbanded in 2008\, Matthew has moved on to a solo career. \n\nGarrison Starr thought she was done playing music. A lifetime of trauma\, from her upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian household to more than two decades navigating the music industry\, left her spirit broken. With her days as a major-label artist behind her\, the Grammy-nominated singer\, songwriter\, and producer was ready to pack it in. \n“I could never get free from the feeling that what I had to say didn’t matter to anybody. And that I was a failure\,” says Starr. “I was like\, ‘You know\, I’m just gonna stop trying.’ So I stopped trying and just started working on myself.” \nThat an artist of Starr’s caliber should feel this way seems unfathomable. She scored her first hit with 1997’s acclaimed “Superhero\,” then went on to release 15 solo albums and tour with Melissa Etheridge\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, and Lilith Fair. Starr’s songs appeared on countless TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars. She even collaborated with close friend Margaret Cho on a comedy album and podcast. \nBut from a young age growing up in Mississippi\, Starr had a sense of self-doubt ingrained deep within her from growing up in Evangelicalism. “I can remember being a little kid and struggling with my sexuality and all these feelings that were coming up for me\,” she says. “I was struggling inside. Like\, this is wrong. I don’t feel supported. It doesn’t feel loving. All this talk of redemption? I don’t feel any of that shit.” \nAs Starr made a name for herself as a musician in Los Angeles in the 1990s\, she still found herself trying to meet others’ expectations. Pigeonholed by the narrow expectations of female singer-songwriters and never one who was afraid to speak her mind\, she grew consumed by her anger. She even abandoned her first love\, the acoustic guitar. “I kind of lost myself trying to work from the outside in\, you know? Like\, trying to figure out what people wanted from me\, instead of figuring out what it is that I wanted to say\,” Starr says. By the time she self-released Amateur in 2012\, she was convinced her time as a performer was over. \nStarr always prided herself on writing her own material — a fact driven in part\, she admits\, by her own insecurities. Looking to open a new chapter in her life\, she decided it was time to work behind the scenes. She threw herself into songwriting collaborations and a new role penning songs for other artists. \nOr so she thought. Having learned to exercise her creative muscles once more\, she discovered a voice that was distinct\, powerful: Garrison Starr’s. “I started realizing\, wow\, you know\, I am the artist in the room. I’m the one. I do still have a lot to say\,” Starr recalls. “That was a great gift for me\, because I thought that part of my life was over. I just thought\, well\, I’m too old to be an artist\, I’m too outspoken. I’m too this\, or too whatever it is. I’m not cut out for this industry.” \nGirl I Used to Be is the fruit of those labors\, a nine-track album of self discovery due to be shared with the world by Soundly Music on March 5\, 2021. Starr’s first new music since her 2017 EP What if There is No Destination and first full-length in nearly a decade\, it was produced by longtime friend Neilson Hubbard\, engineered by Danny Aldredge\, and features cowrites with talented young songwriters like Carly Paige\, Katie Pruitt\, and Dominique Arciero. \nSongs like “Just a Little Rain\,” “Don’t Believe in Me\,” and “Nobody’s Breaking Your Heart” not only find Starr confronting her own demons but\, perhaps more importantly\, holding herself accountable for her own happiness. Her performances — often recorded solo\, in one or two takes — sound loose\, free\, and unburdened by her past\, no matter how heavy the subject matter. That\, she says\, is all down to the women she wrote with. “When I’m writing for myself\, all that baggage is always there. I always have to navigate that regardless. But when I write with other people\, they’re not bringing that baggage to the situation\,” Starr says. “I was able to access some pain\, some sadness\, some joy. I wouldn’t have been brave enough to walk into that dark corner by myself. I had to go there with somebody else.” \nStarr’s singing is both warm and bold throughout\, her words softened by the perspective gained from her cohorts without losing the fire of her convictions. She mixes compassion with a sense of purpose that hearkens back to the message-forward spirit of the 1960s folk movement. It’s a matter\, she says\, of being pointed without being angry. “One of the things I’ve learned is that\, if you want to communicate something to somebody\, you have to do it in a way that they can hear you\,” Starr says. \nThat clarity is never sharper than on opening track “The Devil in Me\,” written with the help of a then-19-year-old Carly Paige. Starr was stunned\, invigorated even\, to find herself learning from an old soul more than 20 years her junior. The result signals the upward trajectory of this album\, starting with Starr and her acoustic guitar and ending with a triumphant clamber of handclaps and percussion. “Honestly\, it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever been a part of writing. It feels so much like me. It feels like a bigger version of me\,” she says. \n“The Devil in Me” shows how fully Starr has come back around on herself\, and on learning to love who she is. That required lots of hard work outside music as well\, from attending Alanon to doing yoga to finding a happy\, healthy relationship. “How can you look at me and make up your mind about who I am because of one facet of my essence?” she asks\, looking back on those who came so close to snuffing out her light. On “The Devil in Me\,” Starr embraces those very facets she was taught to deny in the hopes of encouraging others to find the same strength for themselves. \nTwo of the tracks on Girl I Used to Be were written by Starr alone. “The Train That’s Bound for Glory\,” inspired by a favorite saying of her grandfather’s\, is a rerecording of a song that first appeared on 2013’s Amateur. It’s an opportunity to revisit the gospel music she grew up with and still loves\, without the dogma that scarred her so. “It made me feel like I was bridging the gap for myself like\, you know\, I don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater\,” she says. \nThe other is “Dam That’s Breaking\,” a haunting parable with a very different spiritual message — one about the truth to power\, and the power of being true to one’s self. Though it deals with ancient themes\, it draws its strength from the hard-earned wisdom of Starr’s own journey. Coming at the end of the album\, “Dam That’s Breaking” isn’t just the final word\, but the inspiration for Girl I Used to Be’s title. \n“I used to be that girl who was trying so hard to please everybody\, who was trying so hard to do the right thing in everybody else’s eyes\,” Starr says. “But I can’t be that anymore. I know what you want me to be\, but I’m not that person. I can’t do it. I’m dying inside. I can’t hold back.” \n—– \nFrom haunting acoustic ballads to gritty rock-and-roll songs filled with swagger and attitude\, Matthew Mayfield has spent the past decade releasing music that has changed the hearts and lives of his listeners. His latest LP\, Gun Shy\, is a collection of songs as varied as the emotions each of us feels. If his previous release\, RECOIL\, was the fruit of an intense effort by Mayfield to depict the good\, the bad\, and the ugly in the world he inhabited\, Gun Shy is a look into all worlds – those full of darkness and hope. \nTo connect with listeners and draw them into these worlds\, Matthew created Inside the Song with Matthew Mayfield\, a podcast dedicated to telling the stories behind the songs of Gun Shy – Mayfield’s most introspective and personal record to date. “Our Winds” speaks of true love and hope in the midst of pressure from external forces while “Broken Clocks” finds him accepting a relationship that is doomed to fall apart. The riffs and hooks found in “Gun Shy” and “Best of Me” show Mayfield as the rock-and-roller he is. \nWhile Mayfield is known for crafting both gripping ballads and eclectic rock songs\, Gun Shy’s greatest triumph lies somewhere in between. “S.H.A.M.E.\,” the album’s third track\, touches on what is currently Mayfield’s deepest concern – a world full of people that feel as if they are alone. “Shame is something that no one wants to talk about\, but we’re all ashamed of something. We all have demons and things that prevent us from seeing our self-worth. The song is about connecting with people and letting them know they are not alone\,” says Mayfield. “Connection is everything\, and music has a unique way of helping people connect to others and to parts of themselves that they might otherwise be unable to access.” \nGun Shy is now available on all digital platforms worldwide. Physical copies are available on matthewmayfield.com.

SUMMARY:Mempho presents The Wood Brothers
DESCRIPTION:A roots music trio featuring brothers Chris (upright bass\, vocals) and Oliver Wood (guitars\, vocals) along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix\, the Wood Brothers bring a distinctive flair to their union of folk\, blues\, gospel\, and jazz. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing an opening performance by Sean McConnell \nDoors at 6 pm | Sean McConnell 7 pm | The Wood Brothers 8 pm \nTickets: $30-$45 \nWill call at 5 pm \n*Mempho Presents has requested proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test for this event. Please be prepared to present your vaccination card or a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours at check-in. Masks are required and must be worn unless actively eating or drinking. \n* We will be conducting security checks upon entering the venue. Prepare to have your bags searched. No large bags. If your bag is too large\, you will be asked to bring it back to your car. \n“Everyone has these little kingdoms in their minds\,” says Chris Wood\, “and the songs on this album all explore the ways we find peace in them. They look at how we deal with our dreams and our regrets and our fears and our loves. They look at the stories we tell ourselves and the ways we balance the darkness and the light.” \nThat balance of darkness and light is at the heart of Kingdom In My Mind\, The Wood Brothers’ seventh studio release and their most spontaneous and experimental collection yet. Recorded over a series of freewheeling\, improvised sessions\, the record is a reckoning with circumstance\, mortality\, and human nature\, one that finds strength in accepting what lies beyond our control. Thoughtfully honing in on the bittersweet beauty that underlies our doubt and pain\, the songs grapple with the power of our external surroundings to shape our internal worlds (and vice versa) through vivid character studies and unflinching self-examination. The lyrics dig deep here\, but the arrangements always manage to remain buoyant\, drawing from across a broad sonic spectrum to create a transportive\, effervescent listening experience that’s indicative of the trio’s unique place in the modern musical landscape. \n“My brother came to this band from the blues and gospel world\, and my history was all over the map with jazz and R&B\,” says Chris Wood\, who first rose to fame with the pioneering trio Medeski Martin & Wood. “The idea for this group has always been to marry our backgrounds\, to imagine what might happen if Robert Johnson and Charles Mingus had started a band.” \nKingdom In My Mind follows The Wood Brothers’ most recent studio release\, 2018’s One Drop Of Truth\, which hit #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and garnered the band their first GRAMMY Award-nomination for Best Americana Album. NPR praised the record’s “unexpected changes and kaleidoscopic array of influences\,” while Uncut hailed its “virtuosic performances and subtly evocative lyrics\,” and Blurt proclaimed it “a career-defining album.” Tracks from the record have racked up roughly 8 million streams on Spotify alone\, and the band took the album on the road for extensive tour dates in the US and Europe\, including their first-ever headline performance at Red Rocks\, two nights at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore (captured on their 2019 release\, Live At The Fillmore)\, and festival appearances everywhere from Bonnaroo to XPoNential. \nOn past records\, the band — brothers Oliver and Chris Wood\, and Jano Rix — would often write a large batch of songs and then deliberately capture them all at once\, but when it came to making Kingdom In My Mind\, The Wood Brothers began recording without even realizing it. At the time\, the trio thought they were simply breaking in their new Nashville recording studio/rehearsal space\, laying down a series of extended instrumental jam sessions with engineer Brook Sutton as a way to learn the lay of the land. Some rooms\, they found\, were spacious with natural reverb\, others were tight and dry; some recording setups required a gentle touch\, others encouraged blistering energy. \n“We weren’t performing songs\,” explains Oliver. “We were just improvising and letting the music dictate everything. Normally when you’re recording\, you’re thinking about your parts and your performances\, but with these sessions\, we were just reacting to each other and having fun in the moment.” \nThere was something undeniably alive and uninhibited about those performances\, and after listening back\, the band realized they’d never be able to recreate such spontaneous magic. So\, like a sculptor chipping away at a block of marble\, Chris took the band’s sprawling improvisations and carefully chiseled out verses and choruses and bridges and solos until distinctive songs began to take shape\, songs that reflected influences and elements of the band (like Jano’s smoldering piano work and Chris’s affinity for Latin and African music) that had never shone through in quite the same way before. From there\, the brothers divvied up the material that spoke to them most\, penning lyrics both separately and together as they pondered what it takes to know contentment in our chaotic and confusing world. \nThe jaunty “Little Bit Sweet\,” which was born from the band’s very first session\, learns to appreciate the ups and downs in the circle of life\, while the soulful “Cry Over Nothing” and hypnotic “Little Blue” playfully meditate on ego and perspective\, and the funky “Little Bit Broken” celebrates the imperfections that make us human. Tracks like the bluesy “A Dream’s A Dream” and hypnotic “Don’t Think About My Death\,” meanwhile\, grapple with separating truth from fiction\, ultimately coming to terms with the fact that our brains will always find new ways to blur those lines. Though the album advocates for acceptance\, it’s not a passive brand the brothers sing about\, but rather one rooted in strength and empowerment. To understand exactly what that means\, look no further than album opener “Alabaster\,” which paints a deeply empathetic portrait of a woman who’s broken free from the shackles of her old life and started over fresh. \n“At the same time we were making this album\, we were looking for some sort of philanthropic organization we could support with our music and in a bit of synchronicity\, we came across this great group called Thistle Farms\, which was based just down the street from our studio\,” says Oliver. “Their goal is to help women who have been victims of sex trafficking or prostitution or addiction to get off the street and into safe housing where they can participate in therapy and job training. The work they were doing was so inspiring and it felt like such a fit with the kind of album we were writing that we teamed up with them to donate a portion of ticket sales from all our shows. It’s our way of using what we’ve got to do whatever good we can in the world.” \nMore than anything\, it’s that mindset\, that recognition that we’ve all been dealt our own particular hand of cards and life is in the way we play them\, that defines Kingdom In My Mind. As Oliver sings on the captivating “Satisfied\,” which finds its narrator wondering about the glories of the afterlife before ultimately deciding to make the most of his time on Earth\, “I’ve got nothing left to be afraid of / Because I will be satisfied.” With an album this remarkable\, The Wood Brothers have plenty to be satisfied about.

SUMMARY:Bobby Watson/Curtis Lundy & Umoja with Terreon Gully and Marc Payne
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents world-renowned jazz musicians Bobby Watson and Curtis Lundy and Umoja with Terreon Gully and Marc Payne. \nTickets: $20 advance | $25 day of show \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nSaxophonist\, composer\, producer\, and educator Bobby Watson grew up in Kansas City\, Kansas\, and his playing is steeped in the roadhouse blues tradition of his native city. He got his formal education at the University of Miami\, where his fellow students included Pat Metheny\, Jaco Pastorious\, and Bruce Hornsby. The college has a distinguished\, long-running\, and well-respected jazz performance program. \nAfter he was graduated in 1975\, he moved to New York City\, the jazz capitol of the world\, and soon found employment as musical director for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Watson stuck with Blakey’s group from 1977 to 1981 and then pursued session and tour work with more vigor\, working with drummers Louis Hayes and Max Roach\, saxophonists George Coleman and Branford Marsalis\, multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers\, guitarist Carlos Santana\, and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. He’s also worked with a “who’s who” in the jazz vocal world\, including Joe Williams\, Dianne Reeves\, Lou Rawls\, Betty Carter\, and Carmen Lundy. \nFinally\, he launched his own group\, Bobby Watson & Horizon\, with bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis\, and they recorded for Blue Note and Columbia Records. Watson and Horizon were in demand and on the road from the mid-’80s to the late ’90s\, and he still performs with the group\, with differing sidemen. Watson has amassed nearly 30 recordings as a bandleader and he’s a veteran session man\, having recorded on more than 100 other recordings. As a composer\, he has recorded more than 100 of his original compositions\, and his arrangements for big bands have circulated internationally. \nWatson\, basing himself alternately in New York City and Kansas City\, has been a first-call musician for more than three decades now\, and he also served as a member of the adjunct faculty at William Paterson University in the mid-’80s and at the Manhattan School of Music from 1996-1999. In 2000\, he was selected as the first William D. and Mary Grant/Missouri Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies\, and he’s been working at the University of Missouri/Kansas City\, balancing live concerts around the world with his teaching responsibilities. Since 2000\, Watson’s recordings under his own name include three excellent releases for the Palmetto Records label\, based in New York City. They include Live & Learn (2002)\, Horizon Reassembled (2004)\, and From the Heart (2008). \n——- \nBorn in 1955\, Curtis Lundy is a double bassist\, composer\, producer\, choir director\, and arranger. Lundy began his musical career in the All Miami Youth Jazz Band and was classically trained at the University of Miami under the tutelage of renowned bassist Dr. Lucas Drew. He has studied privately with Cecil McBee\, Linda McKnight\, Jaco Pastorius\, and Ron Carter. \nBest-known for his work as part of jazz vocalist Betty Carter’s band\, Lundy made his debut on the New York jazz scene in 1978. Over the years\, he has performed with an impressive list of musicians\, including: Art Blakely\, John Griffin\, Freddie Hubbard\, Paroah Sanders\, John Hicks\, Wynton Marsalis\, Branford Marsalis\, George Coleman\, Clark Terry\, Sam Rivers\, the Savoy Sultans\, Bobby Watson\, Stanley Turnetine\, Idris Mohamed\, Steve Nelson Quintet\, Mulgrew Miller\, Hammiet Bluiet\, Don Pullen\, Elvin Jones\, Hank Jones\, Sonny Stitt\, Jon Faddis\, Hilton Ruiz\, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis\, Phyllis Hyman\, Lionel Hampton\, Phineas Newborn\, Johnny Hartman\, Charlie Persip\, Louis Hayes\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Barry Harris\, and Frank Morgan. \nIn the late 1980s\, he issued Just Be Yourself (1989)\, and a decade later\, with Justin Time Records\, he released Against All Odds (1999)\, followed by Purpose (2002). Lundy remains one of the most spiritually uplifting bassists on the jazz scene today. He is featured on the G-Three recording SWIFT with Billy Robinson on sax\, Stacie McGregor on piano\, and Billy Hart on drums. Lundy’s arrangement on “Walk With Me\,” recorded by the ARC Gospel Choir\, was sampled by rapper Kanye West and became the Grammy Award-winning hit “Jesus Walks.” This arrangement was also sampled in “This is Why I’m Hot” by Shawn Mims.

SUMMARY:Don Lifted
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Lawrence Matthews\, also known as Don Lifted\, at Crosstown Theater. \nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nTickets: $15 general admission \n$10 student tickets (limited availability\, available at the door) \nMultidisciplinary artist Lawrence Matthews\, also known as Don Lifted\, will transform Crosstown Theater visually and sonically with new music from his Fat Possum debut “325i.” The performance\, which will have limited capacity to ensure the health and safety of guests\, features immersive visual installations following the narrative of the new record and staples from his previous releases\, Alero and Contour (2017\, 2018). \nNew merchandise will be available for purchase\, as well as vinyl copies of the new album. After the performance\, stop by Memphis Listening Lab for a meet-and-greet and vinyl signing with Don Lifted. \nProduction on his most recent album began in late 2019\, after his first national tour. 325i finds the artist physically stuck\, but emotionally and romantically expanding. Written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic\, the album explores the artist’s navigation of his future\, both romantic and physical\, as well as their anxieties surrounding isolation\, queerness\, and past traumas. The album represents transition\, not only artistically\, but in the embracing of an identity suppressed by an outside world he can no longer touch. In 2021\, the record was finished and mastered in Hollywood by Grammy Award-winning Engineer Mike Bozzi (Flower Boy\, Ctrl\, Good Kid\, Maad City\, To Pimp A Butterfly\, IGOR\, This is America). \nAll attendees are required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status. Seating will be socially distanced based on ticket grouping\, and the show will start promptly at 8pm. \nArtist Bio \nMatthews is a multi-disciplined creative\, predominantly working in music\, visual arts\, and film. Matthews’ style incorporates elements of hip-hop\, alternative rock\, and electronic music\, resulting in emotionally vulnerable storytelling and eclectic production. After receiving his B.F.A. from The University of Memphis\, Matthews carved out a career in fine art with his socially informed painting\, photography\, and non-profit work becoming a beacon for aspiring black youth in Memphis and resulting in multiple awards\, collection acquisitions\, and exhibitions spanning galleries and museums across the Mid-south. As Matthews maintained a successful visual art career and released various free albums under the name Don Lifted\, he built the resources and fanbase to release his first two commercial projects\, Alero and Contour in 2017 and 2018. In the fall of 2019\, supported by EgglestonWorks\, he booked his first tour; it started in Memphis before hitting Brooklyn\, Los Angeles\, and San Francisco. At a mid-tour hometown show\, he caught the eye of famed producer Matt Ross-Spang\, which led to Matthews signing a deal with Fat Possum Records. Matthews then spent 2020 in near-isolation crafting what would be his label debut “325i\,” slated for release on October 22\, 2021.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists Jessica Sabogal and Shanna Strauss will present artist talks. \nFree and open to the public \n\nJessica Sabogal is a cuir Colombian-American muralistx from San Francisco whose large-scale public artworks attempt to document and disrupt. Sabogal has consistently reinvented what it means to be a female muralist in a male-dominated industry by utilizing her medium for social change\, action\, and empowerment. \nHer murals have been commissioned by Facebook\, Google\, 20th Century Fox\, the University of Southern California\, the University of California\, the University of Arizona\, and the University of Utah\, among many others. In 2016\, Sabogal received KQED’s Women to Watch Award and the following year was commissioned by the Amplifier Foundation for the 2017 Women’s March\, after which her “Women Are Perfect” campaign gained international acclaim. Sabogal’s work has since been featured in national and international news and media sources including CNN\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Huffington Post\, and The New York Times. \nJessica Sabogal often works with artist Shanna Strauss\, her life and collaborative partner. Essential to their practice is a system of similar core beliefs — feminist\, radical\, pro-people\, and engaged in social change. Their interdisciplinary work implies that collaboration is at the heart of self and community. Both draw inspiration\, connection\, and influence from contemporary political and social movements\, which have always used artistic expression as a critical form of resistance against forces that wage and risk their erasure. For their viewers\, Sabogal and Strauss create collective narratives of diaspora rooted in kinship and solidarity. The pair have been commissioned by The California Endowment\, the University of California San Francisco\, the Euphrat Museum\, and the PHI Foundation. Most recently\, they received the Kala Art Institute 2020-2021 Fellowship Award. \n\nAs a Tanzanian-American\, biracial\, bilingual woman\, who was raised in Tanzania and later moved to the U.S. and Canada\, Shanna Strauss has had to navigate multiple identities\, geographic locations\, histories and cultures. This reality led her to an interest in diaspora identities and what it means to live between different worlds. In her work\, she explores identity and belonging and how oral tradition\, spirituality\, and family legacy are transmitted inter-generationally\, across time and place. Working predominantly on found wood\, she creates mixed-media portraits by combining photo transfer\, painting\, wood burning\, wood carving\, beads\, fabric and other materials — all selected for their symbolic and cultural significance. \nStrauss often works with artist Jessica Sabogal\, her life and collaborative partner. Essential to their practice is a system of similar core beliefs — feminist\, radical\, pro-people\, and engaged in social change. SUMMARY:Spree Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Spree Wilson in The Green Room in a special performance featuring a string quartet composed of musicians of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. MSO musicians Marisa Polesky\, Yennifer Correia\, Hannah Whitehouse\, and Estefan Perez will join Spree on stage for several songs arranged just for this performance.\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 day of show \nBorn in Nashville\, Tennessee\, Spree Wilson’s approach to music has always been driven by his boundless creativity and vision. The singer-songwriter began his musical journey at home\, with a father who sang and toured in a doo-wop group called The Blue Shirts and a mother who kept artists like Elton John\, Fleetwood Mac\, Minnie Ripperton\, and Whitney Houston in constant rotation. Those early influences would become his musical foundation\, the bedrock for a career that would lead to him meeting and working with two giants of popular music: his mentor Dallas Austin and legendary rapper/producer Q-Tip. \nWhile attending Clark University in Atlanta\, Georgia\, Spree met Austin\, who was immediately impressed by the young man’s guitar skills and offered him an internship at his famous studio\, Dart. Spree’s hard work and dedication to learning the music industry served notice that there was more to the multi-talented young artist than just raw talent— there was the focus and drive to maximize his potential and realize his ambitions. Austin would soon offer him a recording contract\, which Spree turned down in order to pursue his career in New York City. \nAfter selling his car and purchasing a one-way ticket to the City of Lights\, Spree arrived in NYC with just his suitcase and guitar. He found himself homeless and living in Penn Station for several weeks. A mutual friend eventually introduced him to Q-Tip\, who was impressed by Spree’s songwriting. Q-tip would ultimately help land the upstart a major label deal with Jive Records. During his time with Jive\, Spree began working on his album — writing songs constantly and ultimately landing a publishing deal with Universal Music Group. \nSince then\, Spree has co-written Afrojack’s single “The Spark\,” which he is also featured on as an artist. “The Spark” has been A-listed on BBC’s radio 1. In addition\, he has co-written “Sin City” on Good Music compilation album Cruel Summer with Teyana Taylor. The album went #1 on the US Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums\, US Top Rap Albums\, and #2 on US Billboard 200. He has collaborated with noteworthy producers such as Q-Tip\, Novel\, No ID\, Jim Jonsin\, Infamous\, Malay\, Robin Hannibal (of Rhye)\, Frequency\, and Mark Maxwell. \nEven with his successes\, Spree remains as creatively progressive as ever and has never limited himself to one specific style or genre of music. His upbringing in Nashville exposed him to everything from George Jones to George Harrison to George Benson. He’s as much hip-hop as he is pop\, a rock star rebel with the spirit of a b-boy. This love of all musical styles is what drives Spree’s ever-broadening sound\, musicianship\, songwriting\, and style.

SUMMARY:ONE NIGHT ONLY: Don Bryant & The Bo-Keys Live with Chamber Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Hear Don Bryant & The Bo-Keys in a very special\, one-night-only performance with members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra will also be performing music from Craig Brewer’s 2019 film Dolemite Is My Name (music written by Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys). \nDoors at 6:30 pm | Show at 7:30 pm \nTickets: $35 first-level seating | $25 balcony seating \nYou know that old song that O. V. Wright did so well in 1971 that no one can ever do that song again — “Nickel and a Nail”? O. V. Wright has held tight to that song and rightfully so. But not no mo. Not to take anything from O.V.— but after nearly half a century\, now you gotta step aside. Don Bryant is here. \nThough it ain’t like he just showed up. The roots of this record are in the Memphis church\, where Don Bryant began singing when he was 5. He joined his father’s family vocal group\, then formed a gospel quartet for a high school radio gig. Broadcasting broadened the audience and they went secular\, singing pop at WLOK on Dick “Cane” Cole’s popular show. After parting with the DJ\, they took a very real step toward careers when\, as the Four Kings\, they began fronting Willie Mitchell’s band. \nWillie Mitchell led the swingingest\, groovin’est band in the Memphis-Mississippi-Arkansas area — the American music floodplain. Willie’s band was known for instrumental records\, but when they’d play at Danny’s in West Memphis\, Don’s group fronted them. But the group broke up and Willie\, who was touring concert venues and dance halls\, needed a vocalist who could play with his supple\, slinky funky beats\, and anointed Don Bryant as his leading man. \nDon could also write songs. He was still in his teens when\, in 1960\, Willie was producing the 5 Royales\, and Don handed him “I Got To Know.” The 5 Royales put it on wax. Don was hot in the spotlight and in the writer’s room. \nAs Willie Mitchell carved out his place at Hi Records\, Don was close by. Don cut songs at Hi under the Four Kings moniker (“That Driving Beat”) and as a solo artist (“Don’t Turn Your Back On Me”). He wrote material for other Hi artists\, including Janet & the Jays and Norman West. In 1969\, still in the age of 7” singles\, Don was popular enough to release an album — though the big breakout hit stayed elusive. \nAround 1970\, Willie put Don with the Hi label’s newest act\, Ann Peebles\, who burst on the scene with “Part Time Love.” Don looked at this slight young lady and penned “99 Lbs” for her: “You wouldn’t know what I’m talking ’bout/ If you never had a love like this/… 99 lbs of natural born goodness/99 lbs of soul.” The relationship warmed\, they co-wrote the hit “I Can’t Stand the Rain” in 1973 and were married the following year. Ann’s performing career continued\, as did Don’s writing\, and they began raising a family. Occasionally\, Don returned to the microphone\, dueting with his wife\, sometimes releasing gospel material. Always\, he continued to write songs. \nAnd all the while\, that voice was maturing\, mellowing\, until these recordings that find him\, at age 74\, in peak form and taking O. V.’s song. The band is a mix of lifelong cohorts and upstart stalwarts. They understand where he’s been and where he wants to go\, making his song “How Do I Get There\,” a rhetorical question\, because they have clearly found the way. –Robert Gordon\, Memphis\, 2017 \n— \nThrough three critically acclaimed albums\, as well as international appearances at major festivals and clubs\, the Bo-Keys have kept the spirit of classic Memphis music alive while also writing a vital new chapter for the sound and style that’s etched into the fiber of American consciousness. The Bo-Keys performed on the score for Hustle & Flow and appear in the film Soul Men\, performing on-screen with stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac. They also appear on three songs Bomar produced for the film’s soundtrack\, including“Soul Music” by Anthony Hamilton\, which was nominated for a Grammy in2010. The Bo-Keys can also be heard performing the song\, “Kick It” in the film and soundtrack for the Paramount animated feature\, Barnyard. The Bo-Keys have also had songs featured in 2013 De Niro/Stallone comedy Grudge Match. the Showtime Series TheChi\, AMC’s Dietland\, the ABC TV series Scandal\, and the CBS TV series Scorpion. \n— \nScott Bomar is a Memphis-based musician\, Emmy Award-winning film/TV composer and producer\, songwriter\, and engineer of multiple Grammy-winning and nominated recordings. Projects include the films Dolemite is My Name\, Hustle & Flow\, Black Snake Moan\, Mississippi Grind\, and Soul Men. Bomar produced and engineered Cyndi Lauper’s Grammy-nominated album Memphis Blues at his Electraphonic Recording Studio and co-wrote the song\, “The House Always Wins” on William Bell’s 2016 Grammy-winning album\, This is Where I Live. \nIn high school\, he began performing with groups at Memphis-area clubs and formed the group Impala. With their ‘60s instrumental sound\, the group toured and released five albums. Impala’s version of the Henry Mancini theme “Experiment in Terror” is featured in George Clooney’s directorial debut\, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. In 2018\, Impala released a new album\, In the Late Hours\, which was described by Rolling Stone as “…combines surf-guitar nostalgia with a minor-key\, spy-movie-worthy riffage.” \nIn 2005\, Bomar composed the score for Craig Brewer’s award-winning film Hustle & Flow\, for which Bomar has received much critical acclaim for his Memphis soul meets hip hop score. Bomar returned in 2006 to collaborate with the filmmakers of Hustle & Flow as Executive Music Producer and composer of the film Black Snake Moan. He worked with film’s stars Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci in the studio to record songs for the film\, which are performed on-screen. He also composed the original score utilizing musicians harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite and Rolling Stones and Ry Cooder sideman\, Jim Dickinson. \nBomar is also the leader of The Bo-Keys\, a Memphis soul group featuring legendary Stax and Hi Records session players.
