SUMMARY:Fall Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:  \nCrosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception of two new exhibitions\, “Fugitive Signals” – Corinne Jones\, and “Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective” – Carl Moore. Come celebrate the opening of new works with a musical experience by DJ LadyLove\, a special menu and a complimentary cocktail from Art Bar at Crosstown Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Exhibition will be on view through Sunday\, January 17\, 2027. \nWhen: October 9\, 2026 from 6pm to 8pm\nWhere: Crosstown Arts — 1350 Concourse Avenue\, Ste. 280 Memphis\, Tennessee 38104 Exhibition Run: October 9\, 2026-January 17\, 2027 \nFugitive Signals—Corinne Jones \nFugitive Signals\, a solo exhibition by Corinne Jones\, consists of a new body of paintings made at Crosstown Arts Residency\, and projected photographs of stairs found in Memphis. The ephemeral stairs ground the walls in a pictorial sense while the paintings appear to be shrouded in a balmy atmosphere that signifies the sky. Together\, the stairs and the paintings are connected by the concept of erasure. The stairs are evidence of absence. They lead to plateaus where buildings used to stand. The erasure is absolute\, but the remnant stairs are vestiges of histories hidden in plain sight. They persistently indicate what once was. The paintings are versicolor abstractions patterned together and clouded\, obscured\, etched\, and erased. They depict streaming banners covered in chevron motifs. The banners present a static presence that continuously beckons\, a fixed state of transience. The chevron\, a symbol of strength and protection\, is repeated with both conviction and irreverence. Repetition is the artist’s way of rewriting and over-writing existing conditions that are rooted in patriarchal systems. These interventions become a tool of subversion. The repeated gestures strip the motifs of their original authority and imbues them with new potentials. The collective whole of Fugitive Signals is a proposition to make the invisible visible in the hope of forming new collective memories. \nCorinne Jones b.1972 Memphis\, TN. Jones has lived and worked in New York City since 1991. She earned an MFA from Columbia University in 2007 and a BFA from The School of Visual Arts in 1996. She has exhibited solo shows at Situations Gallery\, New York City\, NY; Jackie Klempay\, Brooklyn\, NY; Tops Gallery\, Memphis\, TN; The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts\, NC and has participated in various group shows including the Institute of Contemporary Arts\, London\, UK\, Tate Modern; London\, UK; and BWA Wroclaw Galleries of Contemporary Art\, Warsaw\, Poland. Her work is held in many private and public institutions including permanent collections at Museum of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design\, RI; Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, TN; Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University\, NJ; Turchin Center for the Visual Arts\, NC; New York Presbyterian Hospital\, NY; and TD Bank\, NY. Jones has published several editions\, Liam Gillick & Corinne Jones\, (Brigade Commerz/Liam Gillick)\, 2010\, Plain English\, 2014\, and Trends in Repurposed Abstraction which debuted at the MoMA PS1 Art Book Fair in 2015. Her artwork has received critical praise from The New Yorker\, Art News\, Art Slant\, Artcore Journal\, Ravelin\, the Brooklyn Rail\, Cultured Magazine and Impulse Magazine. \n  \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective—Carl Moore \nMy current work is about exploring the day to day social and cultural identity of the black experience and how it relates to our past and present. I want to show those moments that make us who we are as individuals\, and how we not only exist in our personal and communal living spaces but how we exist in the world around us. The physical and emotional impact of our history has left generational scares that we still are healing from\, and those scares have had long lasting effects on how we see the world and how we function within it. I try to create narratives that address social and personal standards that we as a culture have chosen to live by. Those narratives are about the subtle moments of clarity and peace\, creating a place where we question those standards and react accordingly. \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is about placing multiple bodies of work together that I’ve created over the last 15 years\, to not only see how the work has changed in technique and conversation\, but also to see how I’ve changed as the artist creating the conversation. I think they both work in tandem\, the artist needs to create the work and the work needs the artist to create it. That’s how the creative process works. The show is about moving from one image to the next\, and creating a continuous conversation between me and the work and deciding how I want to present it to the viewer. It’s a social experiment with color\, shape and form. I’m always trying to make the next painting better than the last. I’m not saying that there was anything wrong with the previous work\, I just wanted to do something that I didn’t do in the last painting. I think my work has become more complex over the years\, because I am trying to say more. As I get older\, I guess I have more to say. Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is an ongoing conversation between the artist and the viewer\, where no one actually talks to each other\, because the artwork is the conversation. \nCarl E. Moore currently lives and works in Memphis\, Tennessee. He received his BFA and MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He’s the recipient of the Emmett O’Ryan Award for Artistic Inspiration\, the Tennessee Artist Fellowship award from the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts\, the Tri-Star Arts Grant sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation and attended the Crosstown Arts Residency. He has been featured in several publications such as New American Paintings (southern issues 2021 and 2023)\, Seen magazine UK\, 2023 and numerous other catalogs and news articles. He’s exhibited in various galleries and museums in and around the Memphis area and around the country. He has curated and organized numerous exhibitions in small galleries\, non-profits\, alternative and independent spaces\, as well judged local and national exhibitions. Carl E. Moore has also taught at both the University of Memphis and Rhodes College and has given lectures to numerous galleries\, museums and educational organizations about his work\, art and art history. \n  \nDJ LadyLove is a Memphis-based DJ and music industry creative with a passion for connecting artists\, audiences\, and live experiences. A recent graduate of the University of Memphis with a degree in Music Industry\, she has built her experience across A&R\, artist relations\, live events\, production\, and creative direction. \nHer approach to DJing is rooted in discovery and curation—bringing together R&B\, neo-soul\, hip-hop\, Afrobeats\, and Southern sounds to create an experience that feels intentional\, familiar\, and fresh. With a deep connection to Memphis’ music community\, LadyLove is especially interested in creating spaces that reflect the city’s range of voices\, sounds\, and cultures. \nWhether working behind the scenes with artists or behind the decks\, LadyLove is driven by the same goal: bringing the right music to the right audience and creating an experience people remember.

SUMMARY:Fall Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Fall Exhibitions at Crosstown Arts\nOn view October 9\, 2026–January 17\, 2027 \nExplore two exhibitions at Crosstown Arts that bring memory\, identity\, and personal history into focus through distinct approaches to painting and visual storytelling. \nIn Fugitive Signals\, Memphis-born artist Corinne Jones pairs paintings created during her Crosstown Arts Residency with projected photographs of Memphis stairways that remain after the buildings they once served have disappeared. Her colorful abstractions feature repeated chevron motifs that are layered\, obscured\, etched\, and erased. Together\, the paintings and photographs explore absence\, challenge inherited systems of authority\, and invite viewers to consider the histories hidden in plain sight. \nIn Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective\, Memphis artist Carl Moore brings together bodies of work spanning the past 15 years. Through color\, shape\, and form\, Moore explores the everyday social and cultural dimensions of the Black experience\, the lasting effects of history\, and moments of clarity and peace. The exhibition traces the evolution of his practice\, creating a continuing conversation among the artist\, the artwork\, and the viewer. \nVisit the galleries throughout the fall and winter to experience both exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis: Solo
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Davis: Solo\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts  \nFriday\, October 9th\, 2026  \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nCaroline Davis explores sonic textures offered by interactive technologies\, sharing sounds from the saxophone that she considers to be distinctive and quirky. Her solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present. \nShe makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open sources community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk). \nThe music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \n\n\n\n\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.

SUMMARY:Fright-Tober: Cure
DESCRIPTION:A Tokyo detective investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders\, each committed by a different person who can offer no clear explanation for the crime. The only connection is a mysterious stranger whose quiet questions leave confusion and violence in their wake. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, Cure is a hypnotic psychological horror film that replaces conventional shocks with a slow\, pervasive sense of dread. Its unsettling exploration of identity\, repression\, and suggestion lingers long after the mystery appears to be solved.

SUMMARY:Fright-Tober: The VVitch
DESCRIPTION:In 1630s New England\, a Puritan family is banished from its settlement and establishes a farm beside a vast\, forbidding wilderness. When their infant son disappears and the crops begin to fail\, fear and suspicion turn the isolated family against itself. Written and directed by Robert Eggers\, The Witch draws upon period accounts and colonial folklore to create a meticulously crafted tale of religious terror\, repression\, and supernatural evil. Its slow-burning tension and haunting imagery make it a modern masterpiece of folk horror.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series Presents: Creepshow
DESCRIPTION:A murdered patriarch\, a mysterious meteor\, a vengeful husband\, a creature beneath the stairs\, and an impossibly persistent army of cockroaches come together in this gleefully macabre horror anthology. Directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King\, Creepshow pays colorful tribute to the lurid EC horror comics of the 1950s. With its stylized visuals\, gruesome practical effects\, dark humor\, and memorable cast\, the film delivers five wicked tales in which cruelty\, greed\, and bad behavior receive appropriately monstrous rewards. \nTickets

SUMMARY:Modern Jazz Masters: Rodney Jordan with the Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Modern Jazz Masters: Rodney Jordan with the Ted Ludwig Trio \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts  \nThursday\, November 5th\, 2026  \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$25 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door | $10 student tickets  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\nThe Ted Ludwig trio returns to the Green Room stage for the 2026 Modern Jazz Masters series\, featuring bass great Rodney Jordan! \n\nRODNEY JORDAN\nRodney Jordan is a native of Memphis\, Tennessee where he grew up playing the bass in church and with his high school orchestra. He later studied music with Dr. London Branch\, Alvin Fielder\, and Andy Hardwick at Jackson State University in Jackson\, Mississippi. During his college years\, Jordan joined the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra where he served as Assistant Principal Bassist. After graduating\, he became Chair of the String Department at the Dougherty County Public School and served as Principal Bassist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra in Albany\, GA. Teaching has always been an important part of Mr. Jordan’s life and career. In addition to teaching strings in Dougherty County\, he also taught in the DeKalb County School Systems.\nDuring his years in Georgia\, Jordan served as a bass instructor at Darton College (part of the University System of Georgia) in Albany and at Georgia State University in Atlanta. While living in Atlanta\, Jordan became one of the city’s most active jazz bassists\, performing and recording with some of America’s finest jazz musicians\, including Marcus Printup\, Mulgrew Miller\, James Williams\, Milt Jackson\, George Coleman\, and Russell Gunn. He joined the faculty in the School of Music at Florida State University in Tallahassee\, FL in 2001 where he now holds a rank of Associate Professor of Jazz Studies. Jordan teaches jazz bass\, jazz combo playing\, music education classes\, and a jazz styles class.\n\nJordan joined the Marcus Roberts Trio in 2009. It was evident during that first official performance of the newly-formed trio at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London that Jordan thoroughly understood Roberts’ unique trio conception. Rodney Jordan is one of the most versatile jazz bassists on the scene today. His tone is rich and soulful when he plays hauntingly beautiful phrases with the bow. Just as readily\, he plays fast virtuosic passages with apparent effortless skill. Jordan’s knowledge of harmony from his classical bass training combined with the relentless feeling of swing in his playing is a perfect fit for the powerful melodic\, blues-based\, syncopated improvisational sound of the Marcus Roberts Trio.

SUMMARY:Victory Boyd feat. opener Doll McCoy
DESCRIPTION:Victory Boyd feat. opener Doll McCoy \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, November 7th\, 2026\nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM\n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n\nA Grammy Award-winning singer\, songwriter\, and producer\, Victory Boyd has emerged as one of the most compelling artists of her generation\, blending gospel\, soul\, folk\, and spiritual reflection into a sound that feels both timeless and profoundly intimate. Opening for Boyd is Memphis’ very own singer/songwriter Doll McCoy \n\n\nVictory Boyd is a musical storyteller whose raw\, soulful and deeply spiritual songs feel like prayers. Raised in Detroit to a family of nine musicians\, her sound blends gospel\, jazz\, folk\, and R&B with cinematic atmosphere and divine intent. After performing with her siblings to New York City audiences and gaining viral recognition\, she and her family were signed by Jay-Z to Roc Nation in 2017. However\, it was clear Victory’s voice had the strength to stand on its own. \n\nHer debut solo album The Broken Instrument (2018) showcases her artistry and won her acclaim\, leading to collaborations with Kanye West (Jesus Is King) and serving as the opening act for Lauryn Hill\, among others\, on their respective tours. Her 2023 album Glory Hour merges tradition with modern textures and reflective lyrics\, proving that spiritual music doesn’t need to follow the rules to carry divine weight. Her upcoming project dives into themes of love\, grief\, and healing\, allowing her versatility as a writer to shine. With every release\, Victory pushes genre boundaries\, aiming to stir the soul and leave a lasting emotional impact. \n\n\nDoll McCoy is a singer/songwriter born and raised in Memphis\,TN. She formed her roots singing\, and directing in the church choir at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Going on to become a student at Ridgeway Jr. High/High School\, she met her 3 sisters and together they formed the group “ADAJYO” and have been together for 17 years. With a desire to expand her artistry\, she relocated to Los Angeles\, CA from 2011-2015\, working with artists such as Raphael Saadiq and Leonna Lewis. In 2015\, she went on to work for the B.B. King Blues Club\, traveling the world aboard Holland America Cruise Lines until 2018. Now back in Memphis\, she uses all that she has learned and continues to perform in the city and create new music with ADAJYO and plans to release her own new music soon!

SUMMARY:Resident Artist Talks
DESCRIPTION:Fall Resident Artist Talks\nThursday\, November 12\, 2026 | 6 PM in the Green Room \nGet to know the artists behind the work at Crosstown Arts’ Resident Artist Talks. Join Chiara Oscuro\, Stephen Deusner\, Yane He\, Akina Morrow\, Ali Radell\, and Adele Ferguson for an evening exploring their creative practices\, influences\, and projects in progress. From music and storytelling to painting and experimental performance\, this season’s residents bring a wide range of approaches to making and sharing art. \nMemphis-born singer-songwriter Chiara Oscuro draws together the musical traditions of the American South with jazz and South Asian classical influences. Inspired by artists including Sade\, Etta James\, and Amy Winehouse\, her music explores identity\, love\, and longing. \nMusic journalist and author Stephen Deusner examines Southern music through the lens of place and community. His work has appeared in Pitchfork\, Uncut\, The New York Times\, and Oxford American. He is currently developing an alternative history of Memphis music\, tracing the city’s last 50 years of punk\, new wave\, hip-hop\, and blues. \nWith a background in computer science\, architecture\, and visual art\, Yane He brings code\, architectural drawing\, painting\, and time-based studies into conversation. Her work considers how systems of power shape personal experience\, finding moments of vulnerability and resilience within seemingly rigid structures. \nAkina Morrow works at the intersection of storytelling\, theater\, media\, and community engagement. Deeply rooted in Memphis\, her practice explores expression\, culture\, and the people and places that shape our collective narratives\, drawing on her experience as a director\, consultant\, and collaborator. \nDetroit-based keyboardist and composer Ali Radell\, who performs as Alicesun\, explores alternative approaches to piano performance beyond Western tonal traditions. Her practice spans solo composition and collaborations with experimental band FM Corpus and psychedelic hard rock band Sonic Smut. \nMemphis-based painter\, animator\, and muralist Adele Ferguson creates vibrant\, dreamlike worlds populated by figures in intimate relationships. Drawing on the psychology of interpersonal connection and the neuroscience of dreams\, her paintings use bold color and a collage-like visual language to explore emotion\, forgiveness\, and our connections to one another. \nCome hear directly from the artists about the ideas and experiences shaping their work during their time at Crosstown Arts. \nCrosstown Arts Residency is supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission. \n  \nFree and Open to the Public

With a crystalline voice\, melodic command\, and virtuosic mastery of the loop pedal\, LaJoye is a one-human tour-de-force\, dancing effortlessly between theatrical grace and unhinged sincerity. \nLaJoye is a relentless wordsmith\, harvesting endless insight out of lived experience. Since the providential and cathartic breakout of their anthemic hymn “Plowshare Prayer\,” Spencer has been in non-stop motion. Spencer won the Kerrville New Folk singer/songwriter contest in 2021\, and the Songwriter Serenade contest in 2024. They’ve shared stages and tours with The Crane Wives\, David Wilcox\, Dar Williams\, Mary Gauthier\, and countless greats in the singer/songwriter community. \nTheir concerts are typically a fully solo endeavor brimming with more energy than many eight-piece bands. They are a curious blend of pastoral sobriety and nimble playfulness. A Spencer LaJoye concert isn’t exactly a worship hour\, a one-act drama\, a melodic composition masterclass\, or an unplugged emo show. But it’s never not those things. If you didn’t get the pleasure of meeting Spencer at our first Make the Yuletide Gay production\, or if you were there and you’ve been dying to hear more from them ever since\, this is your big chance! \n  \n

Jeremy and Dermel Warren\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, November 15th\, 2026\nDoors open at 5:30 pm | Show begins at 6:00 pm\n$25 in advance (plus fees) | $35 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nJoin us for November’s installment of Strictly Jazz Entertainment’s “Strictly Jazz” Series as NYC-based duo Jeremy and Dermel Warren tackle the music of Betty Carter and Elvin Jones! \nABOUT JD WARREN AND THE RUDIMENT\nJD Warren is a NYC based jazz group lead by husband and wife duo Jeremy & Dermel Warren. This group was formed in 2015 and has released an album June 1\, 2016 titled “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” that has received “Most Highly Recommended” from critics such as Jazz Times\, Improvijazzation Nation\, All About Jazz\, AXS\, and many others. The Rudiment has performed in some of the top venues in the NYC area such as the Blue Note NYC\, Minton’s Harlem\, Club Bonafide\, Cornelia St Café\, and many more. The Rudiment performed at the 2016 Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis\, TN; 2017 Katy Jazz Festival in Katy\, TX (where they also put on masterclasses for high school/college students and held workshops for high school jazz bands); Jazz in the Park in Patterson\, NJ for 3 years running; plus many more. They performed at the Made in New York Gala along side jazz greats Randy Brecker\, Fransico Mela\, and John Patituci. Drummer\, Jeremy Warren\, composes and arranges for the group while vocalist\, Dermel Warren\, handles the lyrical composition. J&D bring their deep Soul & Gospel roots mixed with NYC’s Hip-Hop & Jazz influences to create their own unique style.\nABOUT BETTY CARTER\nBetty Carter developed a legendary reputation\, along with Art Blakey\, as one of the great mentors for young jazz musicians. Equally legendary was her singing prowess\, creating a distinctive style of improvisation that could transcend any song.\nCarter’s bands served a dual purpose: to create her own great music and to help young musicians develop their craft. Many of the musicians who passed through her groups went on to lead their own groups\, such as Geri Allen\, Stephen Scott\, Don Braden\, and Christian McBride. She also developed a mentoring program called Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead through links with organizations like the International Association for Jazz Education\, 651 Arts\, and the Kennedy Center. The program was a one- to two-week teaching seminar where nationally selected promising young jazz musicians learned from Carter and other seasoned musicians\, culminating in a final concert of instructors and students together. Jazz Ahead was one of Carter’s proudest achievements\, and she worked with the program up until her death. She received the National Medal of Arts in 1997.\nABOUT ELVIN JONES\n\nElvin Jones was an American jazz drummer of the post-bop era. Most famously a member of John Coltrane’s quartet\, with whom he recorded from late 1960 to late 1965\, Jones appeared on such albums as My Favorite Things\, A Love Supreme\, Ascension and Live at Birdland. After 1966\, Jones led his own trio\, and later larger groups under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. His brothers Hank and Thad were also celebrated jazz musicians with whom he occasionally recorded. Elvin was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995. In his The History of Jazz\, jazz historian and critic Ted Gioia calls Jones “one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz”.
