This is a great opportunity for new/rising/new-to-Memphis filmmakers to connect with some industry professionals who are looking to hear what you are working on. \nThese meetings are intended for filmmakers with little experience and/or are new to Memphis and have not had many networking opportunities.  \nIn order to participate in the speed meetings and converse with Memphis film industry professionals\, please fill out this form. \nNot all that apply may be selected to participate. Selection will depend on volume and how best the applicants can be matched with the attending professionals. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | presentation at 7 pm \nIf you are not selected and just want to attend Shoot & Splice as usual\, fear not! She received her BFA from the University of Memphis and attended the Yale Summer School of Art at Norfolk. Her works create surreal narratives that question her Southern upbringing and traditional gender roles. In the fall of 2019\, she’ll be attending the University of Colorado Boulder to pursue an MFA in painting. \nBig Red & the Cuties – A new and limited edition pop up group led by Daniel Quinlan and Eric Martin of the Memphis psych pop group known as Spaceface. The group reflects the influence of the members past songwriting and show production\, but works to bring the listeners a simpler retro era sound blended with unmistakeable ’60s homage garnished with current components in a way that mixes the two elements perfectly. Joined on stage by a cast of familiar Memphis talent\, the quintet is exemplary good mood material. \nN Y A – Brilliant local DJ Nya Sanders has really made a name for herself in the past few years with her wealth of musical knowledge and expertise. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nFacilitator: Kristin McWharter\nPresenting artists: Mia Baer\, Jia Wang (Crosstown Arts resident artist)\, and Melissa Farris \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center Supply Store for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). DESCRIPTION:Join Crosstown Arts Residents Pierre Primetens and Matteo Servente as they screen some of their short films and discuss their process as filmmakers. \nDoors at 7 pm | screening & talk at 7:30 pm\nFree and open to the public\nLocation: Crosstown Theater \nFood/beverages are allowed inside Crosstown Theater\, and guests are encouraged to pick up a snack from one of Concourse’s restaurants. Stop by Art Bar and have a drink before the show. \n\nPierre Primetens \nPierre Primetens is an author and documentary filmmaker and has directed such titles as the autobiographical trilogy Un voyage au Portugal (A Trip to Portugal)\, Des vacances à l’Ile Maurice (A Journey in Mauritus)\, and Contre toi (Against You) about his estrangement from his mother’s family and their eventual reconciliation.  His latest documentary\, La fête des garçons (The Boys Ritual)\, is about a rite of passage in a remote village of northern Portugal. His movies have been presented in many French and international film festivals and broadcast on European television. He creates radio documentaries\, writes television screenplays\, serves on several cinema committees and leads screenplay\, film study\, and directing workshops. He is currently writing his first fictional feature film. \n“My sense of observation and an almost scientific rigor are essential in carrying out my projects.  I alternate between different working formats: I go to the site where I wish to film and observe the lifestyles of the residents there from an anthropological point of view\, complemented by periods of writing where I build a fictional narrative based on what I have observed and the material I’ve collected.” \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPierre Primetens will be screening: \nA TRIP TO PORTUGAL\nMy mother died when I was five years old. My father never spoke to me about her. Last year\, my mother’s family\, who is Portuguese\, tracked me down. I’m on my way to Portugal to see them\, for the first time in 20 years. \nHALF-BLOOD\nco-directing with Laetitia Mikles\nFranck heals horses with his hands. With his children\, he is loving and playful. With horses\, he is patient and delicate. But when it comes to talking to Zita\, he clams up. \n\nMatteo Servante \nItalian by birth and Memphian by choice\, Matteo Servente has been making independent films for more than 15 years. After studying in Italy\, France\, and Australia\, he moved to the US in 2008 and has since directed award-winning short films and documentaries. Matteo’s current projects include a narrative feature film called Nessun Dorma (No One Sleeps)\, a magical-realistic drama about a 10-year-old boy who drives across state lines in a stolen Trans-Am searching for a mermaid\, and the documentary A Legacy Suspended\, about his work with The Lynching Sites Project of Memphis. He is also involved in youth education as an elementary teacher and mentor for young filmmakers. \n“Making films is not only a wonderful opportunity but also a great privilege. Doing it in Memphis makes it a big responsibility.” \n \nMatteo Servante will be screening: \nDAMMI IL LA \nThe lives of three very different people become interwoven when Pietro stops what he’s been doing\, comes down off of his stilts\, breaks down\, and has to be put back together by Marguerite. \nWE GO ON\nTwo old gents whose numbers have been called up yonder are in hospice care. Their conversations ricochet around like a shootout in a fantasy factory\, as they both relish the last communication left to them.

SUMMARY:Alexander Paulus: WRONG WAY
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to present WRONG WAY\, a comprehensive solo show featuring recent paintings by Memphis-based artist Alexander Paulus. This will be Paulus’ first solo show at the 430 gallery in two years. In WRONG WAY\, Paulus aims to explore the experience of distorted realities. Through the show’s humor and witty imagery\, it challenges viewers to consider their own conceptions of reality. \nWRONG WAY exhibits a dynamic collection of Paulus’ newest paintings. In his latest series\, Paulus explores the theme of willful ignorance. Through his paintings\, Paulus is able to illustrate the misperceived realities of the willfully ignorant. Throughout the show\, there is a wonderful sense of dichotomy. Paulus’ work is simultaneously humorous and calamitous. The paintings in WRONG WAY feel surreal and bizarre though still grounded in reality thanks to Paulus’ sharp utilization of pop culture references. \nThroughout the collection\, Paulus’ use of bright colors and keen sense of humor plays against the darker undertones of many of the pieces. The duality of his work invites viewers into the piece and keeps them engaged. The show steers clear of pretension and welcomes a good laugh; Paulus’ paintings don’t pretend to take themselves too seriously. Simultaneously\, Paulus utilizes the accessibility of his work to enable viewers to step outside of their own reality and address broader societal issues in a nuanced way. WRONG WAY is a show made of so many layers\, it truly has something for everyone. \nAbout the artist:\nAlexander Paulus received his BFA at Southeast Missouri State University before earning an MFA from Memphis College of Art in 2009. Since then\, Paulus has remained a vital part of the Memphis art community as an Assistant Professor at Southwest Tennessee Community College as well as an artist resident at Crosstown Arts. With little fuss or fanfare he\nbecame the go-to bass player for an elite group of record producers\nand artists. In 2010\, he put down his bass\, picked up a guitar\, and\nstarted writing songs he never thought anybody outside his family\nwould ever hear. It’s possible nobody ever would have heard them\neither\, if not for the encouragement of his colleagues. His debut\nearned him “Record Of The Year” by The Memphis Flyer. Mark soaks in\ndetails like a sponge\, and spending so much time in the company of\nstrong songwriters\, it was only a matter of time before these humble\,\nhumorous and\, and sometimes heartbreaking stories found a way to get\nout. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBrandon Kinder\nKinder\, raised in – and now returned to – Memphis\, has spent all of his\nadult life in music. Forming The Rocketboys during college in Abilene\,\nTX\, he and the group moved to Austin thereafter\, gaining much critical\npraise for their EPs and albums. They continue to grow\, having\nrecently toured the US for the sixth time\, as well as a\nsoon-to-be-repeated tour of Germany. However\, along the way\, and in\nsearch of a more personal voice Kinder took a handful of demos and\nreleased a solo project\, “The Wealthy West Volume 1.” Musically\, The\nWealthy West sits between the storied troubadours of the ’60s and\nmodern solo artists such as Bon Iver and Father John Misty; there is a\ngritty quality to his delicate voice – with just enough pain hidden\nbehind fragile beauty to keep the listener guessing. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJosh Cosby\nIt was a dark night\, like many before it in Memphis. Joshua\nAndrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar\, case-less\,\nslung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down\, not for\nmoney but for a story. He explained to Cosby how he had written a song\nabout his ex-wife Micey. There\, on that dimly lit street occurred an\nexchange\, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the\nultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways\, this man revealed his name to\nbe Star. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most\ninventive bands: Star & Micey.

The result is a broad\, bold approach to Appalachian music\, created by a multi-cultural band whose members span several generations.

He uses his music practice to amplify a social consciousness and to encourage others to find their creative practice. Yazan has recorded and released several full-length albums with Shoulder Tap records and the album Hahaha with Exploding in Sound Records in 2018. He has toured and performed in Europe and the US and collaborated with a long list of individuals and bands.

Iles Art Award\, Lichterman creates  2D  paintings\, and drawings – as well as 4D “time-based” art. \nHer innovative thinking is readily apparent to casual observers as well as art patrons in her choices of media. Even for works on canvas and paper\, she terms them drawings regardless of media used. Multiple layers of media are the preferred choice to offer texture and dimension. The result is stunning.

Come party! \n\n\nAbout DJ Witnesse: \nMemphis music historian and sound designer Jason Sims (aka DJ Witnesse) has 25 plus years of experience rocking dance floors\, including a stint as an instructor for the acclaimed Redbull Music Academy. Armed with an affinity for Funk and R&B and a vast knowledge of Delta music\, Sims has acted as a core operator for many local staples including Lord T & Eloise\, Kingpin Skinny Pimp\, Al Kapone\, and even the Memphis Grizzlies.\n\nAs a music archaeologist specializing in Memphis’ Disco/Funk/Roller Boogie heyday of the 1980s\, Sims takes the dance floor on a journey of discovery\, respectfully co-mingling artists well known from that era (such as The Bar-Kay’s and Willie Mitchell) while unearthing vinyl magic from the treasure trove of forgotten Memphis recording studio gems left to gather dust and cobwebs through time and circumstance. These lost musical archives tell the story of Memphis as music mecca\, post-Stax and post-Elvis\, connecting the dots of the landscape through the 45s and LPs that moved house parties\, roller rinks\, and dance floors from Midtown to Melrose and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:Treat yourself to the gift of Restorative Yoga with Live Music. This workshop focuses on the breath\, supported yoga poses\, and gentle somatic movements. Live music\, vibrational sound\, and healing touch will sustain and deepen your experience. \nFree and open to the public. This event is made possible by Lifeworks. \nMore about the event:\nDuring this yoga practice\, feel the body and mind completely relax and tune into the bliss.\n\nYoga postures (asana) are supported with blankets\, blocks\, and bolsters to achieve total relaxation of the body/mind. These supported yoga poses are coupled with gentle somatic movements that will alternately stimulate the brain and relax the body to move toward balance. \nSomatic movements focus on the developmental movement patterns we experienced as growing infants. They will be primarily performed on the floor and on all fours. Physiologically these movements reconnect the neural pathways in the brain\, allowing us to gain more body/mind awareness. Long deep breathing and other rejuvenating breath work will be integral to the practice. \nThe healing vibrational sounds of live music will support the practice. A wide range of ancient instruments from around the world combined with modern looping technology are used to weave an atmospheric soundscape. The music works twofold: First\, it gives the mind a place to focus as the body begins to relax and open; second\, the vibratory nature of this music is very balancing. \nAbout Being: Art: \n\nSean Murphy and Anne J. Froning formed Being:Art in 2004. Since then\, they’ve traveled throughout the United States designing and teaching dance\, yoga\, and live music workshops. Anne is a multidisciplinary artist: dancer\, visual artist\, teaching artist\, and registered yoga teacher with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience. Sean is a professional musician\, composer\, instrument maker\, teaching artist\, and dance musician with over 20 years performing experience.
