SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk: Kirk Whalum & Kayla Waters
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts Theater\nSun\, Sep 27\, 6:00 PM\n\n\n\nBuy now\n\n\nAbout\n\n\nCrosstown Arts presents Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in the Crosstown Arts Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This concert will feature prolific pianist and composer Kayla Waters. \nAbout Kayla Waters \nKayla Waters\, is a passionate pianist\, composer\, producer and curator of PuriKey Productions. Planted in her creative giftings\, Kayla digs her feet deep into holy ground with Anew\, a harmonious and plush artistic offering. With grandeur\, this musically rich work illustrates the unearthing and unlocking of fresh terrains of life with spiritual “keys” of splendor. Scribed with love\, Anew is a stunning addition to her pianistic anthology following Presence\, Coevolve\, and Apogee. With aplomb\, Kayla is elated to be an official Yamaha Artist and a voting member of the Recording Academy. \nSweetly kissed with success\, Kayla beautifully made history by becoming the first female pianist to reign atop the contemporary jazz charts for multiple weeks and is a seven-time Billboard and Mediabase number one artist. Robed with eminence\, Kayla has been blessed to play with a bouquet of music legends including Stevie Wonder\, Patrice Rushen\, The Jacksons\, Regina Belle\, Avery*Sunshine\, Sheila E.\, Dave Koz\, Jonathan Butler and her cherished father {iconic jazz saxophonist}\, Kim Waters. Kayla has bountifully shared her heartfelt artistry all over the globe and across continents {North America\, Europe and Africa} at countless jazz festivals\, theaters\, prestigious performing arts centers\, national television platforms\, and even playing within the oceans and mountains of God’s creation as her most sacred stage. \nAs Keeper of the Keys\, Kayla eloquently embraces her pure gift as a musical scribe. She has a lofty understanding of key signatures and orchestral textures that gingerly make her mellifluous compositions whisper softly on the heartstrings of all who listen. Kayla’s artistic pieces {often resembling mini-symphonies} musically paint the fragrance of heaven and her lush harmonies create an abundance of sweet-smelling aromas. Although Kayla holds a piano performance degree from Howard University {Summa Cum Laude}\, she audaciously professes the majestic beauty of the Holy Spirit is what truly anoints her fingertips at the piano. Spiritually grounded\, Kayla revels in sharing her magnanimous gifts faithfully {and fruitfully} on every stage she graces. God’s presence is the undulating rhythm and holy abode of her heart.

SUMMARY:Hannibal Buress
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal Buress\nThe Crosstown Arts Theater \nSunday\, October 4th\, 2026  \nDoors open at 6:00 PM | Show starts at 7:00 PM \nOrchestra Seating $42 in advance (plus fees) \nGeneral Admission $35 in advance (plus fees)  \nTickets go on sale June 30th! \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nComing to the Crosstown Theater stage is comedian Hannibal Buress! \n\n\n\nHannibal Buress is a powerhouse of comedy\, television\, and film. From writing for Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock to starring in blockbusters like Neighbors and Spider-Man\, Buress has spent over two decades cementing his status as an entertainment icon. Don’t miss a night of sharp wit and brilliant storytelling from one of the industry’s most versatile creators. \n\nAbout Hannibal \nFrom within the bustling heart of the Windy City\, a comedian named Hannibal Buress embarked upon his journey. The year was 2002\, the location\, the Big Muddy Room at Southern Illinois University. Guided by the wisdom of his friend Chidi and sharpened in the fires of Tony Trimm’s “Sunday School sessions\,” young Buress was prepared to take the comedy world by storm. \nIn 2006\, he emerged from the shadows\, performing at Montreal’s ‘Just for Laughs’ New Faces\, an event that led to his first international appearance on “Late Night with Jörgen Raymann” in Holland. From that moment\, he continued to grow\, creating a series of successful stand-up specials including “Animal Furnace\,” “Live From Chicago\,” “Hannibal Takes Edinburgh\,” “Comedy Camisado\,” and “Miami Nights”. \nFate intervened in 2009\, when a last-minute booking on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” led to a meeting with Seth Meyers. This encounter gave him the opportunity to write for the legendary show “Saturday Night Live.” It was there\, my young turtles\, where Buress had one sketch air – a moment he credits to the creativity of his cousin Percy. He cherishes the memory of watching Rihanna uttering his lines in the “Shy Ronnie” sketch. After a season there\, he moved to “30 Rock\,” filling the space left vacant by the departure of Donald Glover. \nIn the realm of film\, Buress has proven his versatility\, showcasing his talents in “Neighbors\,” “Neighbors 2\,” “Baywatch\,” “Daddy’s Home\,” “Spiderman: Homecoming\,” “Spiderman: Far From Home\,” and “Tag.” He also provided a memorable performance as Lincoln the dentist on “Broad City” and lent his voice to animations like “The Secret Life of Pets” and “The Angry Birds Movie.” \nFrom 2009 to 2017\, Buress held court at the “Comedy at the Knitting Factory\,” his charm and wit making an indelible mark on late-night television\, featuring on shows such as “David Letterman\,” “Conan\,” “Stephen Colbert\,” and “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” \nIn 2022\, he underwent a transformation\, shedding his skin to become Eshu Tune in the world of music. His rhythmic anthems like “Veneers remix” with Danny Brown and Paul Wall\, the lively bowling song “1-3 Pocket\,” and the meticulously crafted “I Lift Weights” echo through the streets. This endeavor was made possible through collaborations with creative minds like Kiefer\, Tru\, Eshu Tune\, Wahsabi Papi\, Kenny Segal\, Eryn Allen Kane\, and Haile Supreme. Through these transformations\, Hannibal Buress remains a true warrior in the world of entertainment.

SUMMARY:The Mystic

In the mystic\, diversity is a prerequisite for all creativity\, which is why Crosstown Concourse is the perfect home. In The Mystic\, the world is far-better served by different beliefs than it could ever be if limited by rigid uniformity. \nAnd if this doesn’t rock your gypsy soul\, the goal of The Mystic is to not feel better but get better at feeling.

SUMMARY:Fall Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:  \nCrosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception of two new exhibitions\, “Fugitive Signals” – Corinne Jones\, and “Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective” – Carl Moore. Come celebrate the opening of new works with a musical experience by DJ LadyLove\, a special menu and a complimentary cocktail from Art Bar at Crosstown Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Exhibition will be on view through Sunday\, January 17\, 2027. \nWhen: October 9\, 2026 from 6pm to 8pm\nWhere: Crosstown Arts — 1350 Concourse Avenue\, Ste. 280 Memphis\, Tennessee 38104 Exhibition Run: October 9\, 2026-January 17\, 2027 \nFugitive Signals—Corinne Jones \nFugitive Signals\, a solo exhibition by Corinne Jones\, consists of a new body of paintings made at Crosstown Arts Residency\, and projected photographs of stairs found in Memphis. The ephemeral stairs ground the walls in a pictorial sense while the paintings appear to be shrouded in a balmy atmosphere that signifies the sky. Together\, the stairs and the paintings are connected by the concept of erasure. The stairs are evidence of absence. They lead to plateaus where buildings used to stand. The erasure is absolute\, but the remnant stairs are vestiges of histories hidden in plain sight. They persistently indicate what once was. The paintings are versicolor abstractions patterned together and clouded\, obscured\, etched\, and erased. They depict streaming banners covered in chevron motifs. The banners present a static presence that continuously beckons\, a fixed state of transience. The chevron\, a symbol of strength and protection\, is repeated with both conviction and irreverence. Repetition is the artist’s way of rewriting and over-writing existing conditions that are rooted in patriarchal systems. These interventions become a tool of subversion. The repeated gestures strip the motifs of their original authority and imbues them with new potentials. The collective whole of Fugitive Signals is a proposition to make the invisible visible in the hope of forming new collective memories. \nCorinne Jones b.1972 Memphis\, TN. I want to show those moments that make us who we are as individuals\, and how we not only exist in our personal and communal living spaces but how we exist in the world around us. The physical and emotional impact of our history has left generational scares that we still are healing from\, and those scares have had long lasting effects on how we see the world and how we function within it. I try to create narratives that address social and personal standards that we as a culture have chosen to live by. Those narratives are about the subtle moments of clarity and peace\, creating a place where we question those standards and react accordingly. \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is about placing multiple bodies of work together that I’ve created over the last 15 years\, to not only see how the work has changed in technique and conversation\, but also to see how I’ve changed as the artist creating the conversation. I think they both work in tandem\, the artist needs to create the work and the work needs the artist to create it. That’s how the creative process works. The show is about moving from one image to the next\, and creating a continuous conversation between me and the work and deciding how I want to present it to the viewer. It’s a social experiment with color\, shape and form. I’m always trying to make the next painting better than the last. I’m not saying that there was anything wrong with the previous work\, I just wanted to do something that I didn’t do in the last painting. I think my work has become more complex over the years\, because I am trying to say more. As I get older\, I guess I have more to say. Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is an ongoing conversation between the artist and the viewer\, where no one actually talks to each other\, because the artwork is the conversation. \nCarl E. Moore currently lives and works in Memphis\, Tennessee. He received his BFA and MFA from the Memphis College of Art. He’s the recipient of the Emmett O’Ryan Award for Artistic Inspiration\, the Tennessee Artist Fellowship award from the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts\, the Tri-Star Arts Grant sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation and attended the Crosstown Arts Residency. He has been featured in several publications such as New American Paintings (southern issues 2021 and 2023)\, Seen magazine UK\, 2023 and numerous other catalogs and news articles. He’s exhibited in various galleries and museums in and around the Memphis area and around the country. He has curated and organized numerous exhibitions in small galleries\, non-profits\, alternative and independent spaces\, as well judged local and national exhibitions. Carl E. Moore has also taught at both the University of Memphis and Rhodes College and has given lectures to numerous galleries\, museums and educational organizations about his work\, art and art history. \n  \nDJ LadyLove is a Memphis-based DJ and music industry creative with a passion for connecting artists\, audiences\, and live experiences. A recent graduate of the University of Memphis with a degree in Music Industry\, she has built her experience across A&R\, artist relations\, live events\, production\, and creative direction. \nHer approach to DJing is rooted in discovery and curation—bringing together R&B\, neo-soul\, hip-hop\, Afrobeats\, and Southern sounds to create an experience that feels intentional\, familiar\, and fresh. With a deep connection to Memphis’ music community\, LadyLove is especially interested in creating spaces that reflect the city’s range of voices\, sounds\, and cultures. \nWhether working behind the scenes with artists or behind the decks\, LadyLove is driven by the same goal: bringing the right music to the right audience and creating an experience people remember.

SUMMARY:Fall Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Fall Exhibitions at Crosstown Arts\nOn view October 9\, 2026–January 17\, 2027 \nExplore two exhibitions at Crosstown Arts that bring memory\, identity\, and personal history into focus through distinct approaches to painting and visual storytelling. \nIn Fugitive Signals\, Memphis-born artist Corinne Jones pairs paintings created during her Crosstown Arts Residency with projected photographs of Memphis stairways that remain after the buildings they once served have disappeared. Her colorful abstractions feature repeated chevron motifs that are layered\, obscured\, etched\, and erased. Together\, the paintings and photographs explore absence\, challenge inherited systems of authority\, and invite viewers to consider the histories hidden in plain sight. \nIn Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective\, Memphis artist Carl Moore brings together bodies of work spanning the past 15 years. Through color\, shape\, and form\, Moore explores the everyday social and cultural dimensions of the Black experience\, the lasting effects of history\, and moments of clarity and peace. The exhibition traces the evolution of his practice\, creating a continuing conversation among the artist\, the artwork\, and the viewer. \nVisit the galleries throughout the fall and winter to experience both exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis: Solo
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Davis: Solo\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts  \nFriday\, October 9th\, 2026  \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nCaroline Davis explores sonic textures offered by interactive technologies\, sharing sounds from the saxophone that she considers to be distinctive and quirky. Her solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present. \nShe makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open sources community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk). \nThe music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \n\n\n\n\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.

SUMMARY:Fright-Tober: Cure
DESCRIPTION:A Tokyo detective investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders\, each committed by a different person who can offer no clear explanation for the crime. The only connection is a mysterious stranger whose quiet questions leave confusion and violence in their wake. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, Cure is a hypnotic psychological horror film that replaces conventional shocks with a slow\, pervasive sense of dread. Its unsettling exploration of identity\, repression\, and suggestion lingers long after the mystery appears to be solved.

SUMMARY:Fright-Tober: The VVitch
DESCRIPTION:In 1630s New England\, a Puritan family is banished from its settlement and establishes a farm beside a vast\, forbidding wilderness. When their infant son disappears and the crops begin to fail\, fear and suspicion turn the isolated family against itself. Written and directed by Robert Eggers\, The Witch draws upon period accounts and colonial folklore to create a meticulously crafted tale of religious terror\, repression\, and supernatural evil. Its slow-burning tension and haunting imagery make it a modern masterpiece of folk horror.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series Presents: Creepshow
DESCRIPTION:A murdered patriarch\, a mysterious meteor\, a vengeful husband\, a creature beneath the stairs\, and an impossibly persistent army of cockroaches come together in this gleefully macabre horror anthology. Directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King\, Creepshow pays colorful tribute to the lurid EC horror comics of the 1950s. With its stylized visuals\, gruesome practical effects\, dark humor\, and memorable cast\, the film delivers five wicked tales in which cruelty\, greed\, and bad behavior receive appropriately monstrous rewards. \nTickets
