DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Janaye Brown\nPresenting artists:\n– Meredith Wilson\n– Tony Mitchell\n– Carrol McTyer\n– Miquelle Clements \n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice — Score Composition: Won't You Be My Neighbor
DESCRIPTION:Please join Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts as we welcome film composer Jonathan Kirkscey\, accompanied by a live chamber ensemble performing selections from his scores.  Jonathan will discuss his experience and creative process working as a music composer for numerous films\, including the recently released award-winning documentary on Fred Rogers\, Won’t You Be My Neighbor. \nJonathan Kirkscey is a composer\, producer\, cellist\, and guitarist who regularly performs with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Blueshift Ensemble\, of which he is a founding member. \nJonathan recently scored the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor\, a film about Fred Rogers which opened in theaters in June of 2018. He also scored Best of Enemies\, directed by Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom) and Robert Gordon\, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. His score for Best of Enemies earned him the International Documentary Association’s award for best original music in a documentary feature. \nJonathan also composed music for several Netflix original documentary series\, including “Chelsea Does” and “Abstract: The Art of Design.”  His other feature scores include Mike McCarthy’s Cigarette Girl\, the documentary 2 Million Minutes: The 21st Century Solution\, Craig Brewer’s debut feature The Poor and Hungry\, and Only Child from director Brian Pera. \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for filmmakers presented collaboratively by Crosstown Arts & Indie Memphis. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | talk at 7 pm\nLocation: Crosstown Arts East Atrium in Crosstown Concourse (top of the red spiral stair)

DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis and Temple Israel present a screening of Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405\, the Academy Award winner for 2018 Documentary Short Subject. \nThis is a portrait of a brilliant 56-year-old artist who is represented by one of Los Angeles’ top galleries. Her body of raw\, emotional work reveals a lifetime of extreme depression and anxiety. \nThe artist\, Mindy Alper\, has suffered through electro-shock therapy\, multiple commitments to mental institutions\, and a 10-year period without speech. Her only consistent means of communicating has been to channel her hyper self-awareness into drawings and sculpture of powerful psychological clarity. \nThrough an examination of her work\, interviews\, reenactments\, the building of an eight-and-a-half-foot paper-mache bust of her beloved psychiatrist\, we learn how she has emerged from a life of darkness and isolation to a life that includes love\, trust\, and laughter. \nIndie Memphis Nights is presented by Orion FCU

The classically trained voice known as D’Monet cannot be defined as a Jazz\, Rhythm and Blues\, or Pop singer … but she has redefined the meaning of the traditional soul artist. \nD’Monet allows you to travel on contorted twists of loves’ successes and failures\, all while exercising her massive vocal prowess. Nurturing her vocal gifts from the tender age of 4\, along with developing her ear for the piano by 7\, she now is a seasoned veteran. \nD’Monet has shared her soul from New York to Los Angeles\, but it’s only natural she makes Memphis\, Tennessee the home of her “Futuristic Soul.” As D’Monet inspires those within her artistic circle\, she soaks inspiration from classic triple threat artists\, such as Anita Baker\, Oleta Adams\, Celine Dion\, Luther Vandross\, Stevie Wonder and Rachelle Ferrell. \nD’Monet has a gift for building bridges between a song and her audience\, crossing cultural and musical genres. This elegant songstress approaches each note with a sophisticated passion\, which leaves the listener addicted and wanting more. D’Monet’s recordings can only be matched by her live performances in various venues around Memphis\, TN. She has been featured on numerous stages and sets\, and her sound has allowed her to branch out across several genres. \nShe was honored to perform as the special guest for Black Enterprise’s Women of Power Summit in 2012. Having shared the stage with Soul Crooner Eric Roberson\, and also having a brief stint as a background singer for Blackstreet’s Dave Hollister\, D’Monet has become a musical mainstay\, particularly in the city of Memphis. In 2011\, D’Monet was featured on Markevius Faulkner‘s hit single “Day One\,” which received major radio airplay on WHAL-FM’S 95.7 Hallelujah FM. DESCRIPTION:Performance by the woodwind quintet\, City of Tomorrow \nFree\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance at 7:30 pm \nAbout City of Tomorrow:\nThe City of Tomorrow is a woodwind quintet with a fearless aesthetic and a commitment to 21st-century music. Gold medalists of the 2011 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition\, the ensemble has been presented in New York at the DiMenna Center\, Trinity Wall Street\, Spectrum\, and at IN\TER/SECT\, co-presented by Bryant Park and Chamber Music America. \nTheir U.S. tours have included prestigious festivals and series\, including the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago\, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Michigan\, and Red Note New Music Festival in Illinois. The quintet’s work has also been supported by residencies at the Banff Center for Arts & Creativity and the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Their 2018-19 season includes residencies at Tufts University in Boston and the Vermont College of Fine Art. \nIn 2015\, the quintet began exploring physical movement and spatial relationships in their concert programming. Championing 20th and 21st-century works by Harrison Birtwistle\, Esa-Pekka Salonen\, Julia Wolfe\, and others\, the quintet uses lighting and choreography to create a seamless and immersive musical experience. \nFrom 2012 to 2014\, the quintet was engaged in a musical exploration of climate change\, which culminated in the commissioning of major new works from composers Hannah Lash\, Nat Evans\, and John Aylward. The City of Tomorrow’s first album\, Nature\, released on PARMA/Ravello in 2014\, further wrestled with questions of human involvement in the natural world. Exploration of these natural themes resulted in a new work from Hannah Lash\, Leander and Hero\, which was supported by a 2014 Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant. \nThe City of Tomorrow’s members are in demand as new music specialists\, curators\, collaborators\, and teachers. As an ensemble\, they have recently given residencies at Vermont College of Fine Arts\, Berklee College of Music\, Indiana University\, Tufts\, and Yale. SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Filmmaking Within Your Means
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Mark Jones \nJoin prolific Memphis filmmaker Mark Jones as he presents his workshop and discussion\, “Filmmaking Within Your Means.” Mark will share his writing and filmmaking ethos\, including writing for realistic and simple locations and minimizing the amount of speaking roles. But most importantly\, this workshop will help teach you how to embrace your supposed creative limitations to make a wholly unique and original film. \nMark Jones lives in Memphis\, Tennessee\, with his partner.  He has made three feature films\, “Tennessee Queer\,” “Fraternity Massacre At Hell Island\,” “Eli Parker Is Getting Married?\,” and one web soap opera\, “On The Edge of Happiness.” Mark worked at WKNO-TV\, the Memphis PBS station\, for several years both on the production crew and as an associate produce for a local roundtable discussion show. He now has a web talk show\, “Memphis on the Mark\,” where he interviews locals artists in the fields of film\, music\, and theatre. Mark’s short films (“Death$ in a $mall Town\,” “Winding Brook\,” “Henry\,” & “Best Wedding Gift”) have screened at dozens of festivals around the country. \nReception at 6:30pm\, discussion begins at 7pm. Free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Melissa Farris \n\n\nPresenting artists: \n\n\nKaleob Elkins\n\n\nDavid E Johnson\n\n\nSara Moseley\n\n\nLance Layman\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \n\nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). The individual exercises help attune participants to the sounds in our lives — especially those we might not have noticed before — while the group discussion following each exercise helps develop a richer vocabulary for describing them. Led by ICEBERG composer Drake Andersen. \n7:15-7:45 pm\nPresentation: John Cage’s Life and Work \nA short presentation given by ICEBERG New Music and Sonosphere about John Cage\, giving background on the composer’s life\, the use of chance operations in his compositions\, and the influence of Zen Buddhism on the composer and his art. \n8-9 pm\nThe Music of John Cage \nPerformed by members of Blueshift Ensemble\, ~Nois Saxophone Quartet\, and ICEBERG New Music. Program will feature a variety of works by John Cage including Imaginary Landscape No. 4 (for 12 radios) and several of Cage’s “plant-based” compositions\, in which performers play on amplified cacti and other plants. Participants are divided into teams and roam Crosstown Concourse\, searching for the sounds on their checklist. Sounds are classified according to properties\, such as “high\, short\, loud” or “low\, short\, soft.” Participants capture the sounds using portable audio recorders (provided). After the scavenger hunt\, the teams regroup to compare\, discuss\, and play their sounds. \n2-2:30 pm – Central Atrium\nIf…Else \nExperimental performer/listeners if…else seek the edges of sonic space. They enter their creations curiously and invite others into a shared space of discovery. Audience members are invited to be a part of the performance by playing small photo-oscillators with flashlights. Featuring flutists Philip Snyder and Jenny Davis. \n2:30-3:30 pm – Central Atrium\nWorkshop: The Polyrhythmic Body: A Movement Excursion for Non-dancers Who Love Music \nLead by Sarah Ledbetter\, the workshop focuses on how we can use our bodies to experience musical elements such as rhythm\, polyrhythm\, and call and response. No dance or musical experience necessary to participate in this workshop. \n3-3:40 pm – East Atrium\nCrosstown Winds \nA Memphis-based woodwind trio (flute\, clarinet\, and bassoon)\, Crosstown Winds is a prize-winning ensemble of the 2018 Coltman Chamber Music Competition Collegiate Division. \n3:45-4:10 pm – East Atrium\, mural wall\nVibes & Waves Crew \nMemphis Jookers Alex Hall\, James Sullivan\, and Jadyn Nathan will perform with cellist Joshua Keller. \n4:15-5 pm – East Atrium\nPresentation: “I Am Sure My Music Has a Taste of Codfish in It”: Thoughts on the Relationship Between Food and Music \nIn this talk\, we explore different ways in which food and music have interacted together throughout the ages\, as we are reminded of the depths to which these two aspects of human experience have shaped our culture and society. As we look at some of the favorite recipes and odd eating habits of famous composers\, we may also tumble deeper into the rabbit hole\, gaining glimpses into the very nature of perception\, art\, and what this has to do with our lives. Presented by ICEBERG Composer Victor Baez \n5-5:45 pm: BREAK (all events after this break require a ticket) \n5:45-6:30 pm – East Atrium\n~Nois Saxophone Quartet \n~Nois is a Chicago-based saxophone quartet devoted to the creation and performance of new music. Founded in 2016 by graduate students at Northwestern University\, ~Nois has quickly emerged as one of the premier young ensembles dedicated to contemporary performance. ~Nois has been a prize winner at major chamber music competitions including the Second Prize in the Open Division of the 2018 M-Prize International Chamber Arts Competition\, the Silver Medal at the 2017 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition\, Second Prize at the 2018 North American Saxophone Alliance National Quartet Competition\, and First Prize at the 2016 Chicago Woodwind Ensemble Competition. \n6:30-7:00 pm – East Atrium\nPresentation: “Suggestions on How to Listen to Contemporary Classical Music” \nFrom the presenter: “As a living composer\, I know that contemporary music is not for everyone. Featuring works by Will Healy\, Victor Baez\, Drake Andersen\, Yu-Chun Chien\, and Max Grafe. \n7:45-8:30 pm – East Atrium\nArtistik Approach \nArtistik Approach is a multi-talented duo whose a cappella-based music incorporates elements of various musical style and genres. Members Eso Tolson\, from East St. Louis and Siphne Aaye\, from New Orleans\, combine singing\, beatboxing\, and rapping to create a fresh and creative sound. Their abilities have given them the opportunity to perform with musical acts rooted in a variety of genres including spoken word\, jazz\, hip-hop\, rock\, r&b\, dub-step\, reggae\, and soul. \n8:20-9:10 pm – Listening Room\nAmy Lavere and Will Sexton with members of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra \nA burgeoning star\, Amy LaVere is becoming renowned worldwide for her songwriting\,  bass playing\, and vocals. This performance features a special collaboration between Amy and Will with an orchestra featuring musicians of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra with arrangements by Sam Shoup. Amy sings with a sweet\, haunting voice that can turn on a dime  from innocent to lusty (“Norah Jones with an added Cyndi Lauper element” — Mojo Magazine; “Spookiness suits her” — New York Times). Whether playing as a duo with her husband Will Sexton or with retro-country sensation Motel Mirrors\, she’s an inventive\, thoughtful singer-songwriter who has crowds throughout the US and Europe smitten. \n9:20-10 pm – Listening Room\nIMAKEMADBEATS \nThere are few producers in hip hop that have as much combined skill and mystery attached to their name as IMAKEMADBEATS. The enigmatic\, faceless man behind the boards has built his reputation on an obsessive dedication to his craft; a mad scientist-like approach to tweaking samples\, drums\, and live instruments; and a signature sound that’s put listeners in the emergency room with severely broken necks. Last year IMAKEMADBEATS released his latest project\, Better Left Unsaid\, under the imprint he founded in 2015\, Unapologetic. The label houses innovative and daring artists such as Cameron Bethany\, AWFM\, Kid Maestro\, and more.
