Her solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present.  \nShe makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open sources community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk).  \nThe music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \n\n\n\n\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.

Some listeners have described Sean’s improvisations as “sound acupuncture” and “a cell-altering shamanic journey.” \nThe concert lasts approximately 90 minutes. There will be traditional concert seating as well as an area to lie down and spread out. If you’re so inclined\, you are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blankets\, pillows\, or anything else you need for your comfort. The more comfortable you are\, the deeper the experience. \nSEAN MURPHY \nSean Murphy is a multidisciplinary artist with over 30 years of professional experience. He is a musician\, ethnomusicologist\, instrument maker\, sound healer\, teaching artist\, nature lover\, listener\, explorer… Sean holds a degree in music history with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology from the University of Memphis. He was trained to play western classical and jazz tuba; but his fascination with world cultures and music has led him to play and make innumerable instruments. Early in his career\, he began performing as a solo improvisation musician accompanying dance and yoga which eventually led him to the practice of sound healing. Sean and his wife\, Anne J. Froning\, have led workshops in restorative yoga\, sound healing\, & meditative movement with music throughout the United States. As a performing and recording musician\, Sean is equally at home working in classical to hip hop\, world to ambient\, jazz to hard rock\, new age to jazz. He is the leader of the Mighty Souls Brass Band as well as regularly playing as a sideman with many jazz groups while also regularly performing improvised music for dance\, healing\, and yoga. He also has many recording credits to his name as a soloist\, bandleader\, and sideman. He has also been fortunate enough to perform with many world-renowned musicians and bands including Dr. John\, Paul Winter\, Mike Tamburo\, the Meters\, Galactic\, Clyde Stubblefield\, and Rufus Thomas to name a few.

This practice is easy enough for beginners and a great add-on for those who have yoga\, meditation\, bodywork\, and healing practices. Elements of sound healing will also be included to relax the nervous system on a cellular level. The workshop begins with a brief check-in\, a movement practice\, then breathwork while lying on the back. Please bring a blanket\, a yoga mat\, and an eye covering (a hand towel works well). \n\n\n\nRobin Bruce teaches healing breathwork and meditation as an extension of her multidisciplinary arts practice. Her foray into the healing arts began as a yoga teacher and bloomed into the healing arts after studying healing breathwork with David Elliott in 2016. Since then\, she’s become a 200hr ERYT\, with over a thousand hours of yoga teaching experience and a mantra recording artist under the name Dharampal. She’s also earned an MA in religious studies with a focus on ritual and spiritual practices to fortify political movements. She completed her MFA in creative writing and translation at the University of Arkansas in 2025 and currently lives in Fayetteville where she works as a bookseller. She views healing work as personal and communal and breathwork as a vehicle to grieve together and collectively dream new futures.

Drawing from experimental hip-hop\, soul\, and cinematic textures\, his performances are rooted in a relentless commitment to pushing past fear\, doubt\, and perfectionism to bring an idea fully to life.\n\nBartholomew Jones is a Memphis emcee and culture maker working at the leading edge of Southern Futurism — a vision of Black Southern identity rooted in the conviction that God don’t make no junk. He treats hip hop as an agricultural product — something grown\, harvested\, and rooted in soil — a thesis that binds his music to the all-Black coffee supply chain he’s built through Cxffeeblack. His sound moves through blues\, jazz\, boom bap\, and electronica\, and his breakout “Coffee Black” — “no sugar\, no cream\, please\, don’t cover my dreams” — turned a hook into a movement\, a documentary\, a TEDx\, and over a million streams. His latest project\, Cxffee Makes You Black\, is the fullest distillation yet. Along the way\, the NBA and HBO have tapped him for projects\, 8Ball signed on as collaborator and investor\, and he’s shared rooms with artists like Propaganda — with VICE\, NPR\, Black Enterprise\, and Memphis Magazine on the record. Louis Hayes\, a native of Conerway’s hometown Detroit\, Michigan; and one of the first people he called when he moved to New York. His contributions to music are vast\, however many may not be aware that they have heard him. His early work was with Horace Silver\, he played on several of Cannonball Adderly’s most important works\, he was a co-leader with Woody Shaw and has been consistent as a full-fledged bandleader\, serving as a mentor to many in the generations to follow his own. Hayes is a living link to those who have passed and carries the torch even now\, for “this wonderful artform\,” as he calls his music. Mr. Hayes is thrilled to have learned of this performance\, and we look forward to giving him his flowers as we tell his story through song. \nHenry Conerway III has become a leading presence on the modern jazz scene since moving to New York City in 2015\, collaborating with renowned artists including Freddy Cole\, Marcus Printup of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Jazzmeia Horn\, and Grammy-nominated trumpeter Russell Gunn\, while also participating in residencies with Jazz at Lincoln Center in Doha. A proud native of Detroit\, Conerway began performing at the Detroit Jazz Festival while still in high school and studied under legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Jazz Orchestra. A graduate of Morehouse College with a degree in Music Composition\, he co-founded the Atlanta-based ensemble Jaspects\, which became a staple of the city’s music scene and collaborated with artists including PJ Morton\, Janelle Monáe\, Tony Hightower\, and Chantae Cann. His career has taken him to major festivals and venues such as the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, Toronto Jazz Festival\, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, as well as iconic New York jazz clubs including Birdland Jazz Club\, Smalls Jazz Club\, Smoke Jazz & Supper Club\, and Minton’s Playhouse. In addition to his work as a performer\, Conerway has composed music for film and appeared in theatrical productions including the Tony-nominated Broadway show Shuffle Along\, or\, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.

Farmer — a Big Legal Mess and Music Maker Foundation artist from Duck Hill\, MS — focuses on Delta- and Memphis-style blues while Crosby performs the stomping North Mississippi and the haunting Bentonia\, MS blues. (Skip James is from Bentonia\, MS.) The Memphis Flyer terms Farmer‘s last recording a “great album.” Though Crosby is a yankee\, he has spent considerable time in Memphis and Mississippi and is mentored by GRAMMY Award nominee and juke joint proprietor Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. \n\n\nWillie Farmer is living proof that Mississippi continues to produce deep blues. The 65-year-old guitarist is neither a soul modernist nor a revivalist\, but a small-town auto mechanic who’s never shaken his love for old-school legends like Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. \nA lifelong resident of tiny Duck Hill\, located in the hills east of the Delta\, Farmer grew up on his family’s farm. He picked up the acoustic guitar in his early teens\, and after saving money from picking cotton\, he bought his first electric instrument. He began performing at school events and local gatherings\, learning blues and R&B by tuning into a powerful Nashville radio station. \nIn his early twenties\, he joined a loose-knit band that played juke joints around the area\, including Duck Hill\, Grenada\, Kilmichael\, and deep into the Delta in Greenwood and Charleston. But he eventually grew weary of the rowdy club scene\, where “people liked to fight like crazy.” \nIn 2003\, Farmer helped found the Grassroots Blues Festival\, held in a meadow outside Duck Hill. The annual event connected him with downhome blues artists from across Mississippi\, including Willie King and Leo Welch. \nFarmer’s first serious studio effort came with “The Man From the Hill” (2019\, Big Legal Mess)\, recorded over several sessions at Bruce Watson’s Memphis-based Delta-Sonic Sound. Working in a North Mississippi Hill Country vein\, the album features Jimbo Mathus and drummer George Sluppick\, with Farmer also exploring gospel harmonies alongside Memphis’ Barnes Brothers. \nFor the past thirty years\, he’s operated his own auto repair shop\, but he hopes the success of the album and touring opportunities will let him finally step away from the garage. The Memphis Flyer called the record a “great album\,” highlighting his playing as full of “rough-hewn strength and deep sensitivity\,” while Relix Magazine noted that it “showcases Farmer’s gritty blues approach as he honors longtime influences like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Howlin’ Wolf.” \nIn his upcoming album At the Blue Front\, Ryan Lee Crosby channels the ethereal sounds of Bentonia\, Mississippi\, through a live field recording captured at the legendary Blue Front Café\, the oldest active juke joint in the U.S. In the spirit of folklorists like Alan Lomax and David Evans\, the album was recorded on reel-to-reel tape at the historic venue owned by Grammy-nominated bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. \nSupported by Holmes\, Grant Smith on calabash\, and Jay Scheffler on harmonica\, Crosby delivers eight tracks that honor Bentonia and North Mississippi blues traditions while reflecting his own distinctive voice. The album\, rich with spontaneously composed performances\, centers on Crosby’s electric 12-string guitar\, played in both standard and “crossnote” tunings. \nCrosby’s journey into Bentonia blues began in 2012 after discovering the early recordings of Skip James. He started formal studies with Holmes in 2019\, but his influences also include Jack Owens\, Cornelius Bright\, and Robert Belfour\, Jessie Mae Hemphill\, and RL Boyce—the latter two of whom he has performed and recorded with. \nDubbed “a young torchbearer of the style” by Smithsonian Magazine\, Crosby blends deep tradition with personal mysticism. His mature compositional gift and gripping interpretive finesse are vividly represented on his 2022 release Universos and his 2020 outing with Argentine multi-instrumentalist and composer Carlos “Negro” Aguirre titled En el jardín. He is a member of the John Patitucci Trio (heard on the acclaimed album Irmãos de Fé)\, has toured extensively with legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins\, and played with characteristic fire and taste on Monty Alexander’s GRAMMY-nominated Harlem-Kingston Express Live! as well as David Sanborn & Marcus Miller’s Time and the River. He has worked in bands with some of the greatest figures in jazz including George Coleman\, Charles McPherson\, Jimmy Heath\, James Moody and Roy Hargrove\, and has toured with his own groups all over the world in the most prestigious festivals and venues including the Tokyo\, Umbria and North Sea Jazz Festivals as well as Kennedy Center\, Jazz at Lincoln Center and more. \nBorn in Tel Aviv and based in New York\, Yotam was discovered at a young age by the great James Moody. He has evolved into a highly influential artist of his day\, hailed by JazzTimes for a musical output “struck through with passion and intimacy\,” and by The New York Times as a player who “improvises in a cutting tone and writes heady original tunes that seem to tug the straight-ahead jazz tradition in new directions.” Fueled by a deep love of the jazz lineage and a joyful immersion in choro\, samba\, frevo\, tango and other idioms\, he approaches his wide-ranging influences with a near-anthropological meticulousness\, conveying a sense not just of technical knowledge but also rich lived experience.

Elsie\, Rachel Maxann\, and Aybil\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, June 13th\, 2026\nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show starts at 7:30 pm\n$25 tickets\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\nWe’re throwing a Black Music Month celebration with a side of Pride as we welcome three astounding singer-songwriters in one unforgettable in-the-round performance. \nElsie (she/her) is a country artist from Columbia\, Mississippi\, known for her rich vocals\, heartfelt storytelling\, and genre-blending sound. Drawing from country\, soul\, and folk influences\, she creates music that is both raw and deeply personal. In 2018\, she made history as the first African American and first Mississippian to win The Country Showdown\, earning the title Best New Act in Country Music. After taking time away to focus on family\, Elsie returned stronger than ever\, recently joining Rissi Palmer’s Color Me Country Class of 2025 and being featured in BET’s The Future of Black Culture series. \nA master of musical fusion\, Rachel Maxann (she/her) seamlessly blends the soulful rhythms of blues\, the heartfelt melodies of folk\, and a dash of vintage Indie rock to create a sound that is uniquely her own. Her musical artistry has taken her to stages across the globe\, from large crowds to intimate venues. Beyond the music\, it’s the impact of it all that Maxann strives for. Its present in everything she does\, from her work as a therapist and activist to the music she makes and the people she inspires along the way. \nAybil (she/her) is a singer-songwriter from Memphis\, TN. When her family moved to Tulsa\, OK\, early in her life\, she began writing about friendship and solitude to cope with the change. As a ’90s baby who grew up in the church\, she was listening to Gospel powerhouses alongside musicals from the ’40s\, ’50s\, and ’60s\, forming a unique perception of what music should be. She hopes her songs create a place of reflection\, healing\, and empowerment.
