SUMMARY:Visiting Writer Tom Piazza
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our latest collaboration with The Booksellers at Laurelwood as we welcome Tom Piazza to Memphis to read from and sign his new novel\, A FREE STATE. Tom Piazza is the author of ten books\, including the novel City Of Refuge\, which won the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction\, and the post-Katrina classic Why New Orleans Matters. Other works include Devil Sent The Rain\, a collection of his essays and journalism\, the Faulkner Society Award-winning novel My Cold War\, and the short-story collection Blues and Trouble\, which won the James Michener Award for Fiction. Tom also wrote for the HBO drama series Treme. \nNo less a literary critic than Bob Dylan has said\, “Tom Piazza’s writing pulsates with nervous electrical tension – reveals the emotions that we can’t define.” A well known writer on American music as well\, Tom won a Grammy Award for his album notes to Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: A Musical Journey and is a three-time winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for Music Writing. His writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Bookforum\, The Oxford American\, Columbia Journalism Review\, and many other periodicals. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, he lives in New Orleans.\n \n\nA FREE STATE \nThe year is 1855. Blackface minstrelsy is the most popular form of entertainment in a nation about to be torn apart by the battle over slavery. Henry Sims\, a fugitive slave and a brilliant musician\, has escaped to Philadelphia\, where he earns money living by his wits and performing on the street. He is befriended by James Douglass\, leader of a popular minstrel troupe struggling to compete with dozens of similar ensembles\, who imagines that Henry’s skill and magnetism might restore his troupe’s sagging fortunes. \nThe problem is that black and white performers are not allowed to appear together onstage. Together\, the two concoct a masquerade to protect Henry’s identity\, and Henry creates a sensation in his first appearances with the troupe. Yet even as their plan begins to reverse the troupe’s decline\, a brutal slave hunter named Tull Burton has been employed by Henry’s former master to track down the runaway and retrieve him\, by any means necessary. \nBursting with narrative tension and unforgettable characters\, shot through with unexpected turns and insight\, A FREE STATE is a thrilling reimagining of the American story by a novelist at the height of his powers. \n

SUMMARY:chapbook workshop
DESCRIPTION:for middle school students\nthursdays\, 4 – 5 pm / 4-week program \nmax 15 participants—email Nat at nat@crosstownarts.org to reserve a spot\, or to help out. \na chapbook was an early type of popular literature because it was cheap to produce. still very popular today\, the name commonly refers to small\, paper-covered booklets\, usually printed on a single sheet folded into books of 8\, 12\, 16\, or 24 pages. participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to write poetry\, short fiction\, essays\, and create visual art for their own original chapbooks. we’ll learn elements of layout and page design\, cover design (using artist-designed woodcut blocks)\, and create contents pages and author bio pages to make the chapbooks as professional as possible. at the end of the workshop\, each participant will leave with 5 copies of their original chapbook and one from each of the other participants. \nwe’ll celebrate with a chapbook release party in the Cleveland Street Flea Market on Friday\, October 9.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: A View From Above\, the Art & Craft of Drone Cinematography
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 6:30 pm | Presentation: 7 pm \nCrosstown Arts and Indie Memphis invite you to look skyward\, toward the increasingly popular world of aerial drone cinematography. With the advent of more affordable tech\, snagging high-flying shots in your low-budget short or commercial project is no longer a pie-in-the-sky dream. \nFor this edition of Shoot & Splice\, we’re discussing what it takes to be an aerial maverick with three of the best drone cinematographers in Memphis.\n \n\nPANELISTS \nWIL “HYPE” EVANS \nWil “Hype” Evans is a highly skilled producer\, UAV/drone pilot\, USAF veteran and part of the team at House of Shoots. At 15\, he began producing television shows and commercials in the Memphis area\, alongside his Emmy-winning brother\, Rahn. To earn money for college\, he joined the USAF at 18\, where he received a wide variety of training in mechanics and communication. After his service\, Wil harnessed his diverse interests\, skills and military experience to become an entrepreneur in the world of video/tv production\, eventually finding aerial film a perfect match.  \nHis aerial film credits include music videos with artists such as Future and Hot Boys rapper\, Turk\, as well as television shows like So You Think You Can Dance. Hype has a high-energy personality and a keen attention to detail. A club DJ by hobby\, he has a love for music and never stops dancing. (Some may call him hyper-active.) \nRYAN GOBLE \nRyan Goble is a Memphis-based Director of Photography well-versed in lighting\, sound and editing with over 17 years of experience shooting everything from Emmy/Academy Award-winning documentaries to commercial productions to reality television. His gear of choice for aerial filming are CineStar copters and Jimmy Jibs.  \nAARON JAFFE \nBorn and raised in Memphis\, Aaron Jaffe has an extensive background in marketing\, management and creative direction\, which makes him an excellent fit to bring the Flyral concept to the Mid-South. The company successfully launched in July of 2014 as a drone services startup and transformed into a multi-faceted content marketing company in 2015\, with the addition of graphic design\, branding and digital marketing services. With a portfolio featuring clients such as Volvo\, AEP River Operations\, Pannattoni Development\, Crown Winery\, CB Richard Ellis\, West Clinic and the Shopping Center Group\, Flyral has proven that the sky is not the limit\, just a source of endless possibility.  \nAaron earned his BA and MSBA from the University of Memphis and has held leadership positions in the startup\, healthcare\, technology and marketing fields ever since. A lifelong creative\, he is an experienced graphic designer and proficient in a wide variety of Adobe Creative Cloud programs. \nDiagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic at the age of three\, Aaron also spends time speaking to Diabetic groups throughout the US about his accomplishments\, challenges and experience as an endurance athlete. When not working or traveling\, he can usually be found trail running or spending time with his loving family: wife\, Devon; daughter\, Ellis; and son\, Owen. \n

SUMMARY:No Brag Pure Fact: The Art of Graceland Too
DESCRIPTION:  \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, September 23\, 6 – 9 pm\nIn partnership with Gonerfest 12\, Goner Records and Crosstown Arts present No Brag Pure Fact\, an exhibition of artifacts and exclusive footage from Graceland Too. Included are some of Paul MacLeod’s own Elvis-inspired outsider artworks\, notebooks he kept\, and mounted photographs of visitors to his house\, all courtesy of Friends of Graceland Too. Filmmakers Jeffrey Jensen and Geoffrey Shrewsbury have also contributed video footage of MacLeod and clips from their upcoming documentary\, The Rise and Fall of Graceland Too. \nAt the reception\, meet special guests and have the opportunity to purchase Graceland Too Memorabilia\, a commemorative 45 RPM record and “Friends Of Graceland Too” t-shirts. \nExhibition List (PDF)\n\nSpecial Thanks\nThe Friends of Graceland Too\, Filmmakers Jeffrey Jensen and Geoffrey Shrewsbury (The Rise and Fall of Graceland Too)\, Marie Claire Underwood \n\nWho was Paul MacLeod? \nElvis Presley fans tend to be an especially devoted lot\, but Paul MacLeod possessed a zeal few could rival. Driven by his perverse affinity for The King\, he turned his own Holly Springs\, MS home into Graceland Too\, an obsessive\, candy-colored shrine dedicated to all things Elvis\, where his ongoing mission was amassing all of the Presley ephemera he could get his hands on and documenting every mention of the star he could find via radio\, television and film. In addition to being a dogged curator of kingly dreck\, MacLeod was known as a bombastic personality with the eccentric habit of giving lengthy\, frenetic tours of his home to anyone who stopped by\, 24 hours a day. \nSpectacle to some\, sanctuary to others\, Graceland Too was a wayward beacon that attracted Elvis fans from all over the world. \nPaul MacLeod passed away in July of 2014\, and over the past year\, many have offered their time and resources in service of preserving what became his life’s work: sheltering strange treasures and welcoming fellow pilgrims on the road to Graceland (Too).

SUMMARY:panel discussion: the state of alternative literary spaces / TN
DESCRIPTION:located in the Ballet Room at Playhouse on the Square \nreadings\, workshops\, and publishing opportunities have long been associated with academic or mainstream environments\, perhaps limiting access to the greater public. Sundress Publications and Academy for the Arts (SAFTA) in Knoxville\, the Porch in Nashville\, and story booth in Memphis have each carved out distinct literary “space” across the state\, working to provide valuable opportunities for writers\, readers\, and youth — rural retreats\, workshops\, writing contests\, and reading series\, to name a few. Jim Warner\, Susannah Felts\, and Nat Akin discuss the role of writer-as-organizer\, and the kind of partnerships and programming it takes to make these spaces vibrant contributions to a city’s broader literary community. \npart of the 2015 Mid-South Book Festival programs

SUMMARY:Lawrence Matthews III: In a Violent Way
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 6 pm \n\nPerformance at Rock For Love: Friday\, September\, 4\, 8:30 pm\nArtist Talk: Thursday\, September 10\, 7:30 pm\n\n\n“A riot is the language of the unheard.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \nIn a Violent Way is a multimedia installation by Lawrence Matthews III that incorporates a wide array of visual and audio elements\, from oil painting and collage to tube televisions and archival video footage. To accompany the installation\, Matthews will perform his own original songs at the close of the show’s reception. The exhibition’s title is a nod to the seminal\, genre-bending 1969 Miles Davis recording\, In a Silent Way\, which inspired and guided Matthews while he created this body of work. \nThe imagery of In a Violent Way is sourced from or informed by mass media portrayals of events past and present in four primary cities: Baltimore\, Los Angeles\, St. Louis and Memphis\, each with its own history of entrenched racial discrimination and economic disparity disproportionately affecting people of color. Mixed media works depicting the demonstrations and unrest of the 1960’s tellingly reside alongside banks of television sets showing video footage of more recent discord\, like the 1992 L.A. Riots. These scenes — differing in timeline\, though not in tenor — convey generations of frustration caused by institutionalized oppression\, angry citizens crying out against abuses at the hands of authority\, and the ambivalent eye of the media that only captures part of the story. \n“My work does not judge the morality of the individuals partaking in the riots\, only the institutions that create the circumstances where riots are the only voice.” – Lawrence Matthews III \n\n \n\n\n \n\nLawrence Matthews III was born in Memphis\, TN\, into a family who encouraged him to be an artist from a young age. He received his BFA from the University of Memphis and was awarded “Best of Show” in the University’s 31st Annual Juried Student Exhibition. Young\, but already prolific\, Matthews is an emerging artist who has shown work in several solo and group shows across Memphis\, including Doomed to Repeat at Circuitous Succession Gallery (2015)\, Cigar Box Show at Glitch Gallery (2014)\, and Price Is Right at David Lusk Gallery (2014). \nMatthews works in a wide variety of media\, including oil paint\, collage\, photography\, sculpture\, music and film\, and combines post-modern\, Pop Art and contemporary influences to narrate his perspective as an African descendant living in America.
