The fact that Harris is white and Haysbert is Black adds even more layers to a complex film that probes the very nature of identity. Whether he’s in singer/songwriter mode or leading a jazz band\, his compositions combine strong melodic lines with unexpected\, shape-shifting harmonies. Combining themes worthy of the Golden Age of Hollywood with more modernist sonic textures\, and echoing artists as diverse as Thelonious Monk\, Duke Ellington\, and Sun Ra\, the classic jazz sextet of the Rolling Head Orchestra is now augmented by the eerie wail of the Theremin. \nIn 2010\, the Rolling Head Orchestra scored the documentary Citizens Not Subjects: Reawakening Democracy in Memphis\, leading to the album Depression Jubilee. The group has gone on to perform original scores for silent films since 2019\, when Greene was a Resident Composer at Crosstown Arts\, including soundtracks for A Trip to the Moon; Aelita\, Queen of Mars; Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman; Flesh and the Devil with Greta Garbo\, and\, as commissioned by the Indie Memphis Film Festival in 2022\, Häxan. \nIn this one of a kind show at The Green Room\, Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra will focus on these cinematic set pieces as stand-alone works. Free to stretch out over Greene’s compositions\, the band\, featuring some of Memphis’ finest players\, will bring the music to life as never before\, blending jazz rhythms and horns with the haunting tones of the Theremin.

On Niineta\, he demonstrates his command of the Pow Wow style\, descending from Indigenous singing that’s been heard across the waters of what is now called Minnesota for centuries. Depending on the song or the pattern\, his voice can celebrate or console\, welcome or intimidate\, wake you up with a start or lull your babies to sleep. Each note conveys a clear message\, no matter the inflection: We’re still here. We were here before you were\, and we never left. \nRainey grew up at Red Lake Ojibwe in Minneapolis\, a city with one of the largest and proudest Native American populations in the country. The Red Lake Reservation sits five hours to the North\, a sovereign state unto itself\, but Rainey grew up down in what Northerners call “The Cities\,” in his mom’s house on historic Milwaukee Avenue on Minneapolis’ South Side. He was raised less than a mile away from Franklin Avenue\, the post-Reorganization Act urban nexus of local Native American life\, a community centered in the Little Earth housing projects and the Minneapolis American Indian Center. The neighborhood still serves as a home for both the housed and the un-housed\, and the don’t-even-wanna-be-housed Native. It is the birthplace of the American Indian Movement (AIM)\, the pioneering grassroots civil rights organization founded to combat the colonizing forces of police brutality. Rainey came of age in the heart of this community\, but always felt like he was living in a liminal space—not that he was uncomfortable with that. “Growing up\, knowing that you weren’t from the Rez\, but you were repping them\, was kind of weird\,” he says. “But I liked that.” \nRainey became interested in Pow Wow singing as a child—at the age of five\, he started recording Pow Wow singing groups with his GE tape recorder\, and his mom enrolled him in a dancing and singing practice with the Little Earth Juniors soon thereafter. As a pre-teen he began hanging out around The Boyz (a legendary Minneapolis drum group) at a house some of them stayed at in the Little Earth projects. “They knew me as a Little Joey\,” he remembers. “As in\, ‘Hey I tried to get Little Joey to sit down and sing\, but he’s too shy.” By the time he was a teenager\, however\, he had found enough courage to help start The Boyz Juniors\, his first drum group\, before going on to sing with Big Cedar\, Wolf Spirit\, Raining Thunder\, and Iron Boy. Eventually\, his voice grew strong enough to sing in Midnite Express\, a new drum group featuring some of The Boyz themselves. They were professionals\, city Indians travelling all over the north country\, repping their reservations and their neighborhoods on every side of every conceivable border—competing for cash and cred\, carousing\, providing the beat to the grass dances\, always striving to capture that “Pow Wow feeling” of togetherness. Rainey was always just as much of a fan as he was a participant—when he wasn’t at his own drum\, he was recording other drums\, then studying the tapes when he got home\, admiring and cataloging the different singing styles\, whether it was Northern Cree\, Cozad or Eyabay. Now with an upgraded workhorse Sony tape recorder\, he was a student of the game\, a maven\, a bootlegger extraordinaire. \nOn Niineta\, Rainey finds himself in between cultures again. This time collaborating with the producer Andrew Broder\, who brought his multi-instrumentalist\, turntablist sensibility to the project. The two of them first met backstage at Justin Vernon’s hometown Eaux Claires music festival before encountering each other more frequently through Vernon and Aaron and Bryce Dessner’s 37d03d collective—both contributing to the last Bon Iver album before broaching the possibility of working together sometime in the future. “At first I didn’t know what I could add to Joe’s incredible recordings\,” Broder says. “But eventually I came to understand everything is rooted in the drum—even the songs on our record that have no drum\, they’re still rooted in the drum.” So each song started with Broder’s beats\, the two of them experimenting with various sounds and tempos\, before bringing in other 37d03d collaborators to orchestrate and recontextualize the ancient Pow Wow sound in strange\, new in-between places. The album pulls from Rainey’s vast sample folder of Pow Wow recordings\, layering and remixing slices of his life of singing in venues across the upper Midwest and Canada. \nRainey got his title\, Niineta\, from his drum brother Michael Migizi Sullivan\, who suggested a short version of the Ojibwe term meaning\, “just me.” But he’s using the term only in the sense that he’s taking sole responsibility for its content. Rainey is protective of Pow Wow culture—which was outlawed by the United States government for a generation\, defiantly maintained in secret by Native elders he deeply respects—while trying to figure out exactly where he fits into it and how he can fuck with it on his own terms. “These are all my creations\, but they’re Pow Wow songs\, and our language is sacred\,” he says. “And I was like\, okay\, I understand that\, so our album is only vocals. I’m not recording when we’re not supposed to and I’m not giving our shit away.” He uses the analogy of working the hotel room door at a Pow Wow. “If we are partying with one of our older bros\, he’d always make me in charge of the fucking door\,” he says. So Rainey would like you to conceptualize this album as him working the door at a Pow Wow after party. “You can think of this like\, hey man\, if all these people are going to be fucking knocking and I’m the one answering the door\, you’re going to realize that I’m not the only one in this motherfucker. There’s tons of people in here. So if I’m answering that door\, I want to be like\, hey\, yeah\, come on in. There’s fucking tons of us in here. It ain’t just me.”

At 14\, he started working as a studio session guitarist and soon began to be called to collaborate with a wide range of artists in his hometown\, then in Brazil\, then abroad. In 2002 Chico put together a band of his own and started recording as a leader. His first album\, ‘Meia Noite Meio Dia’ (Sony Music/ 2003)\, was released in 2003 with great reviews at all the most important newspapers and music magazines in Brazil and abroad and was included in the ‘Top 10 Brazilian albums of the year’ in the major newspapers of Brazil: ‘O Estado de São Paulo\,’ ‘A Folha de São Paulo’ and ‘O Globo.’ This well-received debut included special guest vocalists Lenine\, Ed Motta\, Chico César\, and Maria Rita. \nHis second release\, ‘Chico Pinheiro’ (Biscoito Fino/ 2005)\, enjoyed great critical and audience acclaim\, once more being included in the ‘Top 10 Brazilian albums of the year’ by newspapers’ O Estado\,’ ‘O Globo’ and ‘Folha de São Paulo.’ The third album\, NOVA\, was released in Dec/ 2007 in collaboration with the American guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson. Rachel is passionate about many musical genres. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Indie Memphis present the fourth annual Filmmaker Speed Meetings at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, May 2\, 2023\n7 pm \nEVENT UPDATE: All spots for the Speed Meetings have been filled and the wait list is at capacity. However\, Indie Memphis staff will be in attendance and happy to speak with you about our artist development opportunities and offer advice on other ways to get involved in the film community. Thank you! \nThink of it like Speed Dating\, but for filmmaking guidance and mentorship. This is a great opportunity for new/rising/new-to-Memphis filmmakers to connect with other Memphis-based industry professionals. \nHOW IT WORKS \nFor one hour every 15 minutes\, filmmakers will rotate to different tables to meet and talk shop with other Memphis film professionals. These professionals will be writers\, directors\, actors\, editors\, technicians\, producers\, etc. Everyone is matched up — as best as possible — with people that share common interests or goals. \nThis is intended for filmmakers with either little experience and/or are new to Memphis and have not had many networking opportunities. \n\nNot all that apply may be selected to participate. Selection will depend on volume and how best the applicants can be matched with the attending professionals.\nIf you are not selected and just want to attend Shoot & Splice as usual\, fear not! Indie Memphis staff members will be on hand in the “lobby” to chat with you and answer any questions you may have about our filmmaker development opportunities.

He received his Master of Music from The Juilliard School and bachelors from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Also\, he has played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Miami Symphony Orchestra\, Florida Orchestra\, Atlanta Symphony\, Puerto Rico Symphony\, and San Diego Symphony. Mr. Underwood has also played principal in Chineke!\, Gateways Music Festival\, and Bellingham Festival of Music. Underwood serves as teaching artist for Aspen Music Festival and the National Youth Orchestras program at Carnegie Hall. He also teaches and mentors for the National Alliance for Audition Support program maintained by the League of American Orchestras\, The Sphinx Organization\, and New World Symphony. His latest project was a short film he directed entitled “A Tale of Two Tails”. \nCaitlin Edwards\, violin \nViolinist Caitlin Edwards began her musical journey at the age of eight within a non-profit organization in her hometown of Birmingham\, Alabama. She later attended the University of Louisville (BM) and DePaul University (MM). Caitlin is a 2022 Esteemed Artist Award recipient from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events\, a 2021 3Arts/Walder Foundation awardee\, 2018 Gateways Music Festival Rising Star\, a co-curator with the Fulcrum Point New Music Project\, and a former fellow with the Chicago Sinfonietta. In addition\, she has received Grammy certificates for recordings on Disney’s “The Lion King” and for albums by John Legend and PJ Morton. She released her debut album\, “Exhale\,” in 2021. Caitlin is a classically trained violinist\, but she’s inspired by gospel\, jazz\, hip-hop\, and neo-soul. She composes original music and intentionally performs the works of Black composers to help ensure that these composers and their compositions are remembered and spotlighted for aspiring young BIPOC musicians and the world as a whole. Caitlin is a proud member of D-Composed and Ensemble Dal Niente. \nCremaine Booker\, cello \nNashville based cellist\, Cremaine Booker (also known as ThatCelloGuy)\, has performed extensively in the United States in addition to being a highly accomplished studio cellist. He currently serves as a cellist in the Iris Orchestra and is former principal cellist for the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra and The Jackson Symphony. He has also made appearances with the Trevecca Symphony\, the Sewanee Symphony\, Roy “Futureman” Wooten’s Black Mozart Ensemble\, and the Nashville Concerto Orchestra. He has performed with the likes of Hans Zimmer\, Carrie Underwood\, India.Arie\, Mickey Guyton\, Martina McBride\, Jewel\, Lindsey Stirling\, Michael W. Smith\, LeAnn Rhimes\, Mike Hicks\, and many others. In addition to his live performances he has recorded cello on projects such as Geostorm (2017)\, The Lion King (2019)\, and The Ruined King (2021). \nCremaine has performed masterclasses with teachers such as Natalia Koma\, YeonJin Kim\, Julia Tanner\, Eric Kutz\, Peter Sheppard\, and Yo-Yo Ma. Cremaine holds degrees from Middle Tennessee State University. \nCremaine plays on a modern cello gifted to him by William H. and Judith Scheide. \nArtina McCain\, piano \nHailed by the New York Times as a “virtuoso pianist” Artina McCain\, has built a formidable career as a performer\, educator and speaker. As a recitalist\, her credits include performances at Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre in London\, Weill Hall at Carnegie and Merkin Hall in New York City and more. Other highlights include guest appearances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra\, Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra. In 2022\, she was the mistress of ceremony for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. \n Dedicated to promoting the works of Black and other underrepresented composers\, McCain curates Underrepresented Composers Concerts for multiple arts organizations. She is an American Prize winner for her solo piano recordings of these works and won a Gold Global Music Award for her recent album project Heritage. In 2021\, Hal Leonard published her transcriptions of Twenty-Four Traditional African American Folk Songs.  \n McCain was a featured inspirational leader in the award-winning PBS documentary series Roadtrip Nation: Degree of Impact in an episode exploring the real-world impact of professionals with doctoral degrees in and outside of academia.  \n McCain’s performances have been heard on the Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK)\, Germany’s WDR and television appearances including features on CSPAN for the MLK 50 Commemoration. McCain is a three-time Global Music Awards winner including collaborative projects I\, Too (Naxos)\, with soprano Icy Monroe\, focused on African American Spirituals and Art Songs and Shades\, a collaboration with her husband and duo partner Martin McCain.  \n After not performing for 6 years while battling a performance injury\, she now enjoys a prolific concert career with more than 10 years of full injury recovery. She uses her recovery to serve as an advocate of musicians’ wellness–curating articles\, lectures\, and forums to educate teachers and students. Most recently the BBC featured her on the podcast Sideways telling her miraculous story of injury to recovery. McCain has written and presented on wellness and other topics in the Piano Magazine and at multiple universities\, Music Teachers National Association Conference and the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy.  \n McCain graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University. She received her Master of Music from Cleveland Institute of Music and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Currently\, she is Associate Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Keyboard Area at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis and Co-Founder/Director of the Memphis International Piano Festival and Competition.  \nIn her spare time\, Artina enjoys boutique shopping\, traveling internationally and is an avid tea aficionado.  \nArtina McCain is a Yamaha Artist.

He’s a great young man and a great ambassador for the acoustic guitar.” – Tommy Emmanuel  \nGareth Pearson is referred to as “The Welsh Tornado” which is particularly appropriate\, seeing as this special talent combines fingerstyle pyrotechnics\, with explosive lead runs making Pearson one of the most exciting acoustic musicians gigging today. \nGareth has a distinctive style that can be heard through his creative and innovative arrangements which cover a wide spectrum of genres\, including country/folk/classical/pop/rock/jazz/swing and bluegrass music\, along with his own beautiful and often intricate original compositions. \nDrawing his playing style initially from influences such as Chet Atkins\, Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel\, he has developed a style that is both inspiring and entertaining. \nWithin a year of taking up the guitar\, Gareth was opening for Tommy Emmanuel on his 2005 UK tour. It was in Cardiff where Tommy invited Gareth to play at the CAAS convention (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society) in Nashville\, Tennessee. \nLater that year\, Gareth was performing and touring alongside Ray Davies (The Kinks)\, John Renbourne\, and Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes. During the Southside Johnny tour\, Gareth was invited by Southside to be flown over to the USA to open for his annual New Years Eve concert at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey. \nThe following year Gareth was invited by Tommy Emmanuel to be the support act for his UK tour\, following extensive UK supports to Jan Akkerman\, Andy McKee and appearing at numerous Folk Festivals and Guitar workshops including the Montreal Jazz Festival. \nWith appearances throughout Europe and a growing reputation\, Gareth was invited to perform at the 2008 Canadian Guitar Festival where he came to the attention of Candyrat Records. This lay the seed for Gareth to be the first UK guitarist to be signed by the label. On its release\, Gareth’s debut album “Urban Echoes Vol 1” was selected by Acoustic Guitar editors and frequent contributors as one of the “Essential Acoustic Albums of 2010”. \nWith appearances at the 2009 Montreal Guitar Festival\, USA and worldwide tours and guitar workshops\, Gareth’s reputation as a performer and teacher is constantly growing.

John Cassavetes’ hymn to that berserk business of performing\, Opening Night is enhanced by its intense “old Hollywood” pedigree as Ben Gazzara\, John Blondell\, Paul Stewart and Cassavetes himself are the backing band for Rowlands’ knife-edged soloing. From the first scene\, the narrative is peppered with turn-on-a-dime ambiguity. Whole swathes of action take place “onstage” in front of a real-life audience watching the in-character cast — with a permeable membrane between stage and “reality” so tangible it hurts. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

This iteration’s performance will feature jazz singer Jazzmeia Horn. \nJAZZMEIA HORN\nJazzmeia Horn is an American jazz singer and songwriter. She won the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition in 2015. Horn’s repertoire includes jazz standards and covers of songs from other genres\, including by artists such as Stevie Wonder. She has been compared to jazz vocalists such as Betty Carter\, Sarah Vaughan\, and Nancy Wilson. \n“Horn is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz\, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures like Nancy Wilson and Betty Carter\, but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present.” — The New York Times \nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”—featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

SUMMARY:“Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas”
DESCRIPTION:On view April 22\, 2023\, to August 6\, 2023\nCrosstown Arts Galleries\nFree and open to the public \nGallery Hours\nTuesday–Friday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.\nSaturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.\nSunday: noon– 6 p.m. \n“Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas” is composed of videos from McLean Fahnestock’s Stratagem series\, where the sea and sky flip and merge to generate a new\, seductive yet false horizon. Stratagems are plans or schemes that are designed to deceive. Usually referring to warfare\, they are a well-executed artifice upon an enemy. Working with her interest in desire as it manifests in the landscape\, these works present the ways that our desires can open a door to our ultimate deception.  \nIn a presentation unique to Crosstown Arts\, the videos have been loaded into a custom program that randomly chooses the video and the length of time the video will loop before the next one is randomly chosen to play. Viewers will have a shifting experience that will never repeat. \nThe title for the exhibition comes from the first of the 36 Stratagems – a 6th century Chinese text covering political\, military\, and social strategy written by an unknown scholar.   \nMcLean Fahnestock works with the dynamically changing landscape. Her practice is centered on our desire for specific visual and physical landscapes as manifested through the concept of paradise. This has led to investigations into how this desire has been the catalyst for climate change\, colonialism\, and ecocide. She utilizes digital forms of collage\, video\, and new media. McLean received a BFA from Middle Tennessee State University and MFA from California State University Long Beach. Her work has been exhibited and screened across the United States and internationally. Her work was selected for Off the Screen at the 57th Ann Arbor Film Festival. She has been an artist in residence at Stove Works in Chattanooga\, Tennessee\, and The Lock-Up in Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia. McLean keeps her studio in Old Hickory\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line”
DESCRIPTION:On view April 22\, 2023\, to August 6\, 2023\nCrosstown Arts Galleries\nFree and open to the public \nGallery Hours\nTuesday–Friday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.\nSaturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.\nSunday: noon– 6 p.m. \n“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” by Khara Woods presents a collection of paintings\, sculpture and creative devices developed since 2016. The works examine the creation of movement and texture focusing on a restricted set of grids\, bold colors and shapes inspired by basic geometry. Within these confines\, there are arrangements that intertwine\, shift and vibrate across canvas and wood.\n\nKhara Woods was born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. She comes from a family of artists and craftspeople. She continues the tradition with her geometric abstract paintings and sculpture. Woods began working as a public artist in 2015\, creating and installing murals. In 2016\, she began her studio practice. Woods works primarily with wood\, using it as a canvas or to make 3D art. Mural Arts Philadelphia commissioned Woods as a lead artist for its Art & Environment Initiative in 2019. She completed her first large-scale data visualization mural\, “Basin Portraits\,” in October of that year. She created paintings and mini sculptural studies for her first solo exhibition in October 2020 at the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University. Some of Woods’ latest op-art-inspired paintings and a layered wood sculpture were displayed in the Axis exhibition at Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette\, Louisiana in 2021. Since then\, Woods is continuing to develop her studio practice and making more 3D works. and State Fellowship Program\, and was the finalist for the Southern Prize.

The exhibit presents contrasting aspects of her personality\, showcasing the yin and yang of her pneuma. TANGELA is undergoing a mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformation\, and invites visitors to witness her journey as she ebbs and flows. \n
