SUMMARY:My Magical Manifesto
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artist Darius Wallace will present his one-man show\, My Magical Manifesto\, at the third public “mic check” event at Crosstown Arts Theater. Free and open to the public. \nAbout Darius Wallace:\nPhil Darius Wallace grew up and began his performance career in Flint\, Michigan.  He is an actor\, speaker\, and business coach now based in Memphis\, TN who has performed extensively in a variety of roles at Memphis theaters and around the country including performances showcasing the poetry of Langston Hughes and a touring one-man show about Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n“My work is about how transformation lives in the beauty of our stories. I believe there is transformative power in the written and spoken word. Words are made of letters which are signs\, which then become symbolic ideas. Ideas are our stories which can manifest our desires into reality. My hope is that through my performance\, the audience will find their best self and that which makes them happy in life.”

SUMMARY:Don't Stop Dancing to the Music! A Conversation with The Bar-Kays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with The Bar-Kays’ Larry Dodson and Winston Stewart. Free and open to the public. Moderated by Memphis radio personality (and Crosstown Arts community outreach coordinator) Porsche Stevens\, this freewheeling conversation will include stories from the band’s rich past and much more. \nFollowing the tragic 1967 plane crash that resulted in the tragic death of four of its members and their mentor\, Otis Redding\, The Bar-Kays reformed with new members and began a nearly five-decade run of chart success and high-energy live performances. \nTwo key members of the second Bar-Kays era were lead vocalist Larry Dodson\, who recently retired after nearly fifty years in the band\, and keyboard player Winston Stewart. Both members played at the 1972 Wattstax Festival\, stuck with Stax Records until its closure in 1975\, and helped the band redefine their sound during the disco era. \nIn conjunction with Give a Damn: Music & Activism at Stax Records\, on view at Crosstown Arts through Dec. 2.

SUMMARY:ReMix Memphis
DESCRIPTION:Join musician/writer Alex Greene for a listening session featuring the sounds of Memphis. \nUsing an app called Loopy HD\, Alex goes through different groups of sounds\, slowly adding and subtracting noises recorded right on the streets of Memphis. You might hear simple sounds\, like feet walking through leaves\, the roar of an overhead jet\, or a leaf blower. You might hear more suggestive sounds\, like music from an amphitheater\, gun shots\, or tornado sirens. They’re all geared to get people thinking about what surrounds them every day\, and — most importantly — what they like or dislike hearing. Participants are given cards they’ll use to rate each sound as positive\, negative\, or neutral. \nIn addition\, Greene will play some of the creative mash-ups that local musicians and producers have contributed\, using field recordings from the Memphis streets. It will be the first public airing of works slated to be collected in a dedicated Memphis 3.0 album.

SUMMARY:Dis-rupted
DESCRIPTION:Dis-rupted is a durational performance\, led by Crosstown Arts resident artist Santina Amato\, that focuses on the materiality of bread dough and women’s bodies in a designated space at 430 N. Cleveland. \nThis will be the largest project Amato has attempted with bread dough\, inviting ten female-identifying persons to create 300 pounds of dough in a public performance held on December 4th between 4-8pm\, where they will eventually lay\, stand or sit in the dough as it rises around them. \nThis work is a continuation of Amato’s investigations into the materiality of dough and her focus on the notion of the intimate body\, especially the female body. \nAmato’s work can be viewed on her website: https://santinaamato.com/

Wiggins\, and Sheree Renée Thomas. \n\n\nAbout Nicole Mitchell:\nNicole M. Mitchell is an award-winning creative flutist\, composer\, bandleader\, and educator. She is perhaps best known for her work as a flutist\, having developed a unique improvisational language and having been repeatedly awarded “Top Flutist of the Year” by Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association (2010-2017). Mitchell initially emerged from Chicago’s innovative music scene in the late 90s\, and her music celebrates contemporary African American culture. \nShe is the founder of Black Earth Ensemble\, Black Earth Strings\, Sonic Projections\, and Ice Crystal\, and she composes for contemporary ensembles of varied instrumentation and size\, while incorporating improvisation and a wide aesthetic expression. The former first woman president of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians\, Mitchell celebrates endless possibility by “creating visionary worlds through music that bridge the familiar with the unknown.” Some of her newest work with Black Earth Ensemble explores intercultural collaborations; Bamako*Chicago\, featuring Malian kora master\, Ballake Sissoko\, made its American debut at Chicago’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival in September 2017\, and Mandorla Awakening with Kojiro Umezaki (shakuhachi) and Tatsu Aoki (taiko\, bass\, shamisen)\, was just recently released on FPE records (Chicago) last spring. \nAs a composer\, Mitchell has been commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture\, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art\, Art Institute of Chicago\, the Stone\, the French American Jazz Exchange\, Chamber Music America (New Works)\, the Chicago Jazz Festival\, ICE\, and the Chicago Sinfonietta. SUMMARY:Brick Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition of work by Carrie Rubinstein \nOpening: December 14\, 6-8 pm \nArtist Statement:\nInfluenced by the abundant brick and plaster walls of the Crosstown Concourse building in which it was conceived\, Brick Fiction consists of two freestanding wooden structures that are covered in drawings that mimic those surfaces. The walls of Crosstown Concourse reveal layers of sandblasted paint\, plaster\, brick\, and concrete from the previous century. The beauty of this raw surface inspires my sensibilities as an artist because it sparks my curiosity about the prior occupants of this place. \nBoth structures stand at 10 x 9 x 8’ tall and contain full-size doors and two windows. The viewer is invited to experience the work from its interior and perimeter. One structure features hand-drawn individual bricks for its entire exterior. Even though each structure is nine feet tall\, the overlapping placement of each interior drawing of plaster walls produces an unexpected intimacy. Other objects made entirely from hand-drawn and folded sheet paper include a ceiling that resembles wooden planks\, an electrical outlet\, and a three-dimensional fuse box with bolts and wire housing. \nRubinstein is motivated by the dichotomy of building representational space out of non-traditional construction materials. This natural tension drives her practice and she continually seeks to give it structure. Brick Fiction celebrates the renewal of an old space and its objects complement the revitalized edifice from which they are inspired. \n\nBrick Fiction is inspired by the raw beauty found in the walls of Crosstown Concourse\nAside from the wooden framework\, the objects are all hollow constructed sheet paper.\nUsing paper to represent solid construction materials is a driving force for the artist.\n\n\nAbout the artist:\nCarrie Rubinstein is a Brooklyn-based artist who creates ink drawings\, paper sculptures\, and watercolor paintings. She earned her BA in Studio Art from Smith College\, a post- baccalaureate degree in Sculpture from Brandeis University\, and her MFA in Sculpture from Hunter College with a semester at L’École des Beaux Arts in Paris. \nNotable NYC-based group shows include exhibitions at Arts@Renaissance\, Brooklyn Museum’s Go Open Studio Project\, A.I.R. Gallery\, Orgy Park\, The Roger Smith Hotel\, and TSA Gallery. In 2010-11\, Rubinstein coordinated the tART art collective\, and in 2013 was a sculpture resident at the Vermont Studio Center. \nHer VSC experience generated early work for Retrofit\, a full-room installation made entirely from paper through drawings\, hollow constructed sculptures\, and castings. Brooklyn’s Rhombus Space presented Retrofit\, which was Rubinstein’s first NYC solo show\, and she was their August 2015 artist-in-residence. In June 2017\, Rubinstein created the paper installation\, Found Underground\, at Hunter College’s Thomas Hunter Project Space in Manhattan. In September 2017\, Retrofit traveled to the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph\, MI. This was Rubinstein’s first solo museum show. Rubinstein was honored to be a pilot artist in-residence at Crosstown Arts in Memphis for 2017-18.

SUMMARY:Point in Time
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of video art by Janaye Brown.\nLocation: Screening Room\, plus pop-out film panels in the East Atrium \nPoint in Time presents sixteen of Brown’s minimalist videos made within the past seven years. Brown makes videos based on pregnant moments observed in her everyday life. Her filmmaking background informs the techniques used to build and sustain a sense of anticipation while emphasizing the passage of time. Through an extended look at a narrative fragment\, often with a single action as its focus\, the subtlest shifts become prominent\, and the viewer has time to examine everything within the mise-en-scène. SUMMARY:Brick Fiction Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition of work by Carrie Rubinstein \nOn view: December 14-January 27 \nArtist Statement:\nInfluenced by the abundant brick and plaster walls of the Crosstown Concourse building in which it was conceived\, Brick Fiction consists of two freestanding wooden structures that are covered in drawings that mimic those surfaces.
