SUMMARY:901 Ringers Handbell Choir
DESCRIPTION:Performance of holiday music and carols by the 901 Ringers Handbell Choir. \nWith up to 12 ringers\, this seasoned group of musicians can perform both religious and secular pieces. Unlike an orchestra or choir in which each musician is responsible for one line of the texture\, a handbell ensemble acts as one instrument\, with each musician responsible for particular notes\, sounding his or her assigned bells whenever that note appears in the music. \nStick around after the performance for Memphis Holiday Bones\, a holiday trombone concert by the Bluff City Trombone Collective\, in The Green Room.

SUMMARY:Sonic Youth: 30 Years of Daydream Nation
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation\, filmmaker Lance Bangs will present a program of Daydream Nation-related films on January 11th. After the screening\, local Grammy Award-winning writer and filmmaker Robert Gordon will moderate a Q&A with Bangs and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. \nThe program will include a Put Blood In The Music documentary excerpt  from 1989 (a new restoration). Lance Bangs will also present excerpts from his new concert film of the band performing the album in its entirety in Glasgow in 2007. A few unseen gems from the band’s archives will round out the bill. \nDoors at 7 pm | Screening at 7:30 pm \nThanks to Lance Bangs and Sonic Youth\, we are grateful to be able to offer this event as a fundraising opportunity to support Crosstown Arts’ ongoing events and programming.  A donation of any amount to Crosstown Arts will secure your seat (while supplies last!). For tickets\, click HERE to make a donation that will support our ongoing arts and music programming. \nAbout the film: \nSonic Youth released their sixth album\, Daydream Nation\, 30 years ago on October 18\, 1988. The album was an immediate critical success. Lance Bangs’ new Sonic Youth concert film Daydream Nation presents the band performing the double album in Glasgow in August 2007. Bangs blends HD footage shot in Glasgow with fragments of personal Super8mm and 16mm from his archives of Sonic Youth over the decades. \n\nSonic Youth released their sixth album Daydream Nation on October 18\,1988. The album was an immediate critical success. Robert Palmer wrote in Rolling Stone that it “presents the definitive American guitar band of the Eighties at the height of its powers and prescience.” Time has not dimmed the album’s luster: It was selected to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2005 and in 2013 Consequence of Sound declared “the record simply rules.”

SUMMARY:John Kilzer Album Release
DESCRIPTION:John Kilzer album release concert with John Kilzer\, Matt Ross-Spang (acoustic guitar)\, Steve Selvidge (guitar)\, Steve Potts (drums)\, Dave Smith (bass guitar)\, & Rick Steff (keys).\n\n\nTickets are $30 (purchase on Eventbrite) \n\nAbout John Kilzer:\nIn disparate but somehow related ways\, John Kilzer is a virtual Renaissance man whose talent is one of remarkable breadth\, a reflection of his intellect and deep-seated soulfulness. \nBeyond Memphis\, where he’s long resided\, having moved there from Jackson TN (home of Carl Perkins)\, the national music community became aware of him in the late 1980s when he was signed to Geffen Records. In the intervening years\, he’s recorded a number of albums for both major and indie labels and has written songs that have been recorded and released by Roseanne Cash\, Trace Adkins\, Dobie Gray and Maria Muldaur\, among others. While he’s an accomplished musical entity\, it should be noted that he’s been an athlete\, a star forward for the Memphis State Tigers. At Memphis State he not only earned a Masters degree in English literature but also taught the subject full time for three years.

SUMMARY:Sink Into a Dream
DESCRIPTION:Olga King and Savannah White unite in a duo art show Sink Into A Dream. \nOn view 6-8 pm on Friday\, Jan. 26 and from 10 am-1 pm on Saturday\, Jan. 27. \nOrganized by the artists \nAbout the artists:\nOlga King\, a native of Russia who has made Memphis home for several years\, is well-known for jewelry making and painting. Formerly married to a world-roaming photojournalist and herself traveling annually on excursions to find gem stones\, King brings experience and a worldview to her paintings\, which vary between representational still life and ethereal personas. \nSavannah Jewell White expresses her creativity in many ways — fashion modeling\, event planning\, and painting being three. Her paintings are particularly influenced by travel and she has done quite a bit\, from Europe to the Far East\, Milan to Mt. Fuji. The fluidity and vivid styling in her paintings hints at a life on the go; this is immediately verified when you meet her. \nThe show title references Travelling by 19th century romantic poet William Wordsworth\, and takes double meaning in both an imbued sense of place for the traveler and the sometimes mystical\, sometimes whimsical\, always lively traits seen in the work of both artists.

SUMMARY:Brick Fiction Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Artist Carrie Rubinstein will discuss her work on view in her solo exhibition\, Brick Fiction\, which runs through January 27. \nArtist Statement:\nInfluenced by the abundant brick and plaster walls of the Crosstown Concourse building in which it was conceived\, Brick Fiction consists of two freestanding wooden structures that are covered in drawings that mimic those surfaces. The walls of Crosstown Concourse reveal layers of sandblasted paint\, plaster\, brick\, and concrete from the previous century. The beauty of this raw surface inspires my sensibilities as an artist because it sparks my curiosity about the prior occupants of this place. \nBoth structures stand at 10 x 9 x 8’ tall and contain full-size doors and two windows. The viewer is invited to experience the work from its interior and perimeter. One structure features hand-drawn individual bricks for its entire exterior. Even though each structure is nine feet tall\, the overlapping placement of each interior drawing of plaster walls produces an unexpected intimacy. Other objects made entirely from hand-drawn and folded sheet paper include a ceiling that resembles wooden planks\, an electrical outlet\, and a three-dimensional fuse box with bolts and wire housing. \nRubinstein is motivated by the dichotomy of building representational space out of non-traditional construction materials. This natural tension drives her practice and she continually seeks to give it structure. Brick Fiction celebrates the renewal of an old space and its objects complement the revitalized edifice from which they are inspired. \n\nBrick Fiction is inspired by the raw beauty found in the walls of Crosstown Concourse\nAside from the wooden framework\, the objects are all hollow constructed sheet paper.\nUsing paper to represent solid construction materials is a driving force for the artist.

A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. In 2018\, Dr. Shults was selected to perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference Friday night headline concert as a featured soloist along with Branford Marsalis. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North America Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. \nEqually adept as a concert saxophonist\, Shults has been praised for his “jaw-dropping” and “authoritative”technique (Bill Brownlee of the Kansas City Star) and has performed by invitation at the College Band Director’s National Association conference\, the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference and the University of Iowa Festival for New Music. He is a founding faculty member of the Kansas City Saxophone Workshop along with Zach Shemon\, alto saxophonist of the PRISM Quartet. Dr. Shults has also served on the faculty of the Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop at Shell Lake Arts Center. Michael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and previously held the same position at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. \nHe is a Yamaha and D’Addario performing artist and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

SUMMARY:P'aint It Cool: Art Show and Face Painter Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Ever want to know more about the face painter you see at a party or at a festival? Have you thought\, “That would be cool to learn”? But when you got on the internet to buy supplies\, you became overwhelmed by all the different products and choices? \nThe best place to learn and share is with each other. A “jam” is where that happens. Painters from the local area will be here to share in an informal gathering of the minds. Everyone is invited to come out and watch live demonstrations from local face painters\, watch videos with demonstrations on how to use face painting accessories\, or just come out and be a model citizen for those who want to learn new techniques. \nWe will also have a showcase of our latest professional work on display in the art gallery. We ask for a love donation of $5 to donate to our local Hearts of Gold Pet Rescue in return for knowledge\, sharing\, art appreciation\, and fun with people who appreciate the art of face and body painting.
