SUMMARY:Visiting Writer Donald Ray Pollock
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and the Booksellers at Laurelwood present Visiting Writer Donald Ray Pollock upon the release of his newest  novel\, The Heavenly Table. \n\nFrom Donald Ray Pollock\, author of the highly acclaimed The Devil All the Time and Knockemstiff\, comes a dark\, gritty\, electrifying (and\, disturbingly\, weirdly funny) new novel that will solidify his place among the best contemporary American authors. \nIt is 1917\, in that sliver of border land that divides Georgia from Alabama. Dispossessed farmer Pearl Jewett ekes out a hardscrabble existence with his three young sons: Cane (the eldest; handsome; intelligent); Cob (short; heavy set; a bit slow); and Chimney (the youngest; thin; ill-tempered). Several hundred miles away in southern Ohio\, a farmer by the name of Ellsworth Fiddler lives with his son\, Eddie\, and his wife\, Eula. After Ellsworth is swindled out of his family’s entire fortune\, his life is put on a surprising\, unforgettable\, and violent trajectory that will directly lead him to cross paths with the Jewetts. No good can come of it. Or can it? \nIn the gothic tradition of Flannery O’Connor and Cormac McCarthy with a healthy dose of cinematic violence reminiscent of Sam Peckinpah\, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers\, the Jewetts and the Fiddlers will find their lives colliding in increasingly dark and horrific ways\, placing Donald Ray Pollock firmly in the company of the genre’s literary masters. \n“In 1917\, just as another hellish August was starting to come to an end along the border that divides Georgia and Alabama\, Pearl Jewett awakened his sons before dawn one morning with a guttural bark that sounded more animal than man. The three young men arose silently from their particular corners of the one room shack and pulled on their filthy clothes\, still damp with the sweat of yesterday’s labors. A mangy rat covered with scabs scuttled up the rock chimney\, knocking bits of mortar into the cold grate. Moonlight funneled through gaps in the chinked log walls and lay in thin milky ribbons across the red dirt floor. With their heads nearly touching the low ceiling\, they gathered around the center of the room for breakfast\, and Pearl handed them each a bland wad of flour and water fried last night in a dollop of leftover fat. There would be no more to eat until evening\, when they would all get a share of the sick hog they had butchered in the spring\, along with a mass of boiled spuds in wild greens scooped onto dented plates with a hand that was never clean from a pot that was never washed. Except for the occasional rain\, every day was the same.”\n— from The Heavenly Table \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n\nDonald Ray Pollock\, recipient of the 2009 PEN/Bingham Fellowship\, made his literary debut in 2008 with the critically acclaimed story collection\,Knockemstiff.  He worked as a laborer at the Mead Paper Mill in Chillicothe\, Ohio\, from 1973 to 2005.  He holds an MFA from Ohio State University. His work has appeared in\, among other publications\, Epoch\, Granta\, and theNew York Times. \n\nADVANCE PRAISE\n\nAdvance praise for The Heavenly Table: \n“With furious prose and a Faulknerian eye for character\, Pollock (The Devil All the Time) populates his second novel with dozens of memorable people who embody America’s headlong leap toward the future in the early 20th century. \nIn 1917\, everything changes for the Jewett brothers—Cane\, the capable one; Cob\, the “slow” one; and Chimney\, the hothead—upon their father’s sudden ascension to the “heavenly table.” With the exploits of their pulp fiction hero Bloody Bill Bucket fresh in their minds\, the brothers embark on a violent journey north\, escaping the backbreaking\, fetid swamps on the Georgia-Alabama border and their lives under the thumb of sadistic landowner Maj. Thaddeus Tardweller. In southern Ohio\, aging farmer Ellsworth Fiddler and his wife wait for their prodigal son to return home after a brief absence\, during which he may or may not have enlisted in the United States Army to fight in Europe. Facing inexorable change—automobiles\, airplanes\, the machinery of war and agriculture—Ellsworth and others who frequent the local mercantile are “in agreement that the world now seemed head over heels in love with what tycoons and politicians kept referring to as ‘progress.’ ” But the Fiddlers cannot fathom how their lives will be transformed when the Jewetts ride into town on a crime spree that has made them the most wanted men in the country. \nSet against the backdrop of America’s involvement in WWI and the rise of motorized and electrical technology\, Pollock’s gothic\, relentless imagination seduces readers into a fertile time in America’s history\, exploring the chaos\, wonder\, violence\, sexuality\, and ambition of a nation on the cusp of modernity—and the outmoded notion of redemption in a world gone to hell.”\n—Publishers Weekly (starred) \n“Donald Ray Pollock is a master-worker.  This great novel flows like buttermilk\, so smooth and entertaining that you won’t be ready for the left hook it delivers to your heart or its sophisticated moral analysis of human life.  Pollock has an omniscient eye like Gogol\, taking in a vast scene while spinning tales within tales.  Readers will love him\, writers will study him.”\n—Atticus Lish\, author of Preparation for the Next Life \n“The Heavenly Table is brilliant and unforgettable.  In his trademark blend of humor and pathos\, Donald Ray Pollock gives us a view into life’s darkest corners\, without ever forgetting there is a lighter side as well.”\n—Philipp Meyer\, author of American Rust and The Son \n“Think of The Heavenly Table as an antic\, shambolic\, guilty pleasure. Pollock’s prose is compulsively readable and often very funny.”\n—Booklist \n“A darkly comic gorefest by a gifted writer.”\n—Kirkus \n“In a crowded room full of voices\, Don Pollock’s voice is so distinct you’ll hear first and won’t ever\, ever forget it. Nor will you want to. And the kicker is this: He somehow keeps getting better.”\n—Tom Franklin\, author of Poachers and Crooked Letter\, Crooked Letter \n“The Heavenly Table is the latest and strongest evidence that Donald Ray Pollock is one of the most talented and original writers at work today. With uniquely vivid and graceful prose he renders a tale destined to linger in the reader’s mind\, a story by turns violent and darkly amusing\, and always powerful. The novel is sure to be ranked among the year’s best.”\n—Michael Koryta\, New York Times-bestselling author of Those Who Wish Me Dead \n“The Heavenly Table is a ferociously gothic ballad about desperate folks with improbable dreams and scant means. It is potent and chimeric\, dank\, violent\, swamped in tragedy—and funny as hell.”\n—Daniel Woodrell\, author of The Maid’s Version and Winter’s Bone

SUMMARY:Microcinema Club: Slamdance Shorts
DESCRIPTION:To follow last month’s Sundance shorts\, we are featuring “anarchy” work from their neighbor SLAMDANCE.  The Slamdance film festival was born out of a DIY oppositional gesture. Their “Anarchy” shorts category is an attempt to recapture the early spirit of the festival. The casual cinephile might associate the Anarchy program with avant-garde\, transgressive\, or underground cinema. It is all of these things and none of them\, it is an anti-genre\, the form of resistance to dominant cultural paradigms. The films value innovation of form\, violation of taboo\, and disdain for institutional modes of representation. \n7 pm doors open | 7:30 pm screening | Pay-what-you can admission | Free food & drinks \nSUPPORTED BY ARTSMEMPHIS AND THE FIRST TENNESSEE FOUNDATION | ARTSFIRST

SUMMARY:Hustle: Pricing your Artwork
DESCRIPTION:Pricing our artwork can leave us fraught with doubt. How do we decide what our work is worth when we are starting out? How and when do we raise prices? Does it matter if the work is sold online\, at a fair\, or though a gallery? Our approach to pricing can effect the local arts economy and what others can charge for their work. How do we price responsibly? \nJoin us for a discussion with Robert Hollingsworth\,  Kenny Wayne Alexander\, and Jim Masterson to explore various perspectives on pricing artwork as well as commissions and other types of projects. \nProgram begins at 6 pm\nComplimentary food and drinks  \nHustle: professional development for artists is a free program organized by ArtsMemphis\, UrbanArt Commission\, and Crosstown Arts. The series will provide visual artists with information\, resources\, and opportunities to support them in the development of their professional careers. Workshop topics will range from positive studio practices to pricing work and navigating gallery representation. Questions? Contact Mary Jo Karimnia at maryjo@crosstownarts.org

SUMMARY:Vanilla Extract Volume 2: Fairly Vain or Vanity Fair
DESCRIPTION:New work by Lester Julian Merriweather\nDiscussion/artist talk: Wednesday\, June 15\, 6 pm\nReception: Friday\, June 17\,  6-9 pm\n\n“The Vanilla Extract© Series was established in 2002 as a catalyst for examining the infrastructural practices of racial representation by print media corporations. As found images are collected\, they are then altered with the removal of Caucasian people. This practice works to illustrate the vast disparity in the visual representation of People of Color and highlights the notions created by systemic racism as practiced by print media corporations. The Vanilla Extract© Series works to visually define the endemic nature of racial bias.”\n-Lester Merriweather \n\n“Vanilla Extract\, Volume Two: Fairly Vain and/or Vanity Fair” chronologically marks the fourth installment of The Vanilla Extract© Series. Volume Two is focused on the front covers of Vanity Fair Magazine from 2006-2013. \nExhibition organized by the artist

SUMMARY:Say Hello to America!
DESCRIPTION:OPENING EVENT: FRIDAY\, JUNE 10\, 6-9 PM\n\nParticipating artists:  \nKenneth Alexander\, Mary Baddour\, Timothy Barker\, Nick Canterucci\, Len Clark\, Saj Crone\, Temple Daniels\, Judith Dierkes\, Charles Dwyer\, Brantley Ellzey\, Jay Etkin\, Adam Farmer\, Jan Hankins\, Carrol Harding McTyre\, Kenneth Johnston\, Paula Kovarik\, Taylor Loftin\, Elysia Mann\, Barbi Martin\, Sophia Mason\, Lester Merriweather\, Andrea Morales\, Margaret Munz-Losch\, Nathan Parten\, Alex Paulus\, Terri Phillips\, Erica     Qualy\, Carrie Schule\, Matt Seltzer\, Valerie Shavers\, Valerie Sparks\, Kyle Taylor\, Lance Turner\, Jeane Umbreit\, Jeff Unthank\, Richard Varnon\, Keysha Warr\, Stephanie Wexler\, Jana Wilson & Meredith Wilson \n\nHi Friends\, \nOf all the madness in American politics at the moment\, it’s nearly impossible to get your head around exactly what’s happening. Somehow\, it’s all very funny and sad and terrifying at the same time. Dr. Thomas More asked a question in the opening lines of Walker Percy’s Love in the Ruins that feels eerily appropriate to ask now: \nIn these dread latter days of the old violent beloved and of the Christ-forgetting Christ-haunted death dealing western world…undoubtedly something is about to happen. Or is it that something has stopped happening? Is it that God has at last removed his blessing from the U.S.A. and what we feel now is just the clank of the old historical machinery\, the sudden jerking ahead of the roller-coaster cars as the chain catches hold and carries us back into history with its ordinary catastrophies\, carries us out and up toward the brink from that felicitous and privileged siding where even unbelievers admitted that if it was not God who blessed the U.S.A\, then at least some great good luck had befallen us\, and that now the blessing or the luck is over\, the machinery clanks\, the chain catches hold\, and the cars jerk forward? \nBut who needs words to describe what’s happening to America? Did you get bored reading that last paragraph? It was kind of long\, right? Way too many words for this news cycle. Keep the words short\, mean what you say—or don’t. Tomorrow’s another headline. \nMillions of Americans are supporting a man for president who has stayed in the forefront of the news by repeatedly saying outrageous things with a very limited range of words\, usually 140 characters or less at a time. He’s definitely onto something and knows it\, even claiming “I know words. I have the best words.” \nThis is a season of extremes\, but in the words of Extreme’s “More than Words\,” “more than words is all you have to do to make it real.” \nPlease consider yourself invited to submit works of visual art\, music\, or performance related to the current political landscape (or anything to do with politics\, America\, etc.) for the upcoming exhibit Say Hello To America! All that we ask is that you keep it real\, using words\, or not. Whatever. \nHere is my submission to the show\, made in collaboration with Memphis-based artist Sadie Yanckello. The photo is of my son\, with an American made beer\, because he loves America. I promise this photo is “real.” It even has words on it to prove it! \n \nChristopher Miner & Sadie Yanckello\, The 4.2%\, digital collage\, 2016\n“I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America. That’s the America millions of Americans believe in. That’s the America I love.” – Mitt Romney \nHope to see you soon\,\nChris \n\n  \n1.Important Dates \nSubmission deadline: Sunday\, May 15 \nSelection notices sent: Friday\, May 20 \nArtwork drop-off: Monday\, June 6\, 9am-6pm \nOpening Reception: Friday\, June 10\, 6-9 pm \nArtwork pick-up: Sunday\, July 10\, 3-5 pm and Monday\, July 11\, 9am-noon  \nDates on view: June 10-July 9\, 2016\, Tuesday-Friday\, 10 am – 6 pm \nOther events TBA \n2.Size Limit\nThere is no restriction on size of artwork other than reasonable passage through a standard doorway. \n3.Display Requirements\nAll artwork must be delivered ready to hang/install to be included in the exhibition. SUMMARY:The Paw Project Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join Memphis Pets Alive! for a special screening of The Paw Project\, a documentary whose organizational mission is to educate the public about the painful and crippling effects of cat declawing\, to promote animal welfare by ending the practice of declaw surgery\, and to rehabilitate declawed big cats. Doors will open at 6:30 and the film will begin at 7:00 (and last approximately one hour). Light snacks will be available as well as beverages [donations are accepted and encouraged!]. \nPresale tickets will be available for $5.00 and we will sell tickets at the door as well\, but keep in mind seating is limited! Thank you to the Paw Project for allowing us to share this film with the Memphis community and your support in doing so!\n\nABOUT THE FILM\nIn the United States today\, six out of ten pet owners consider their pets to be family members. Today\, 36\,117\,000 households have a pet cat in the home. (” U.S. Pet Ownership Statistics.” U.S. Pet Ownership Statistics. N.p.\, n.d. Web. 22 July 2011.) Currently\, approximately 25% of these cats are declawed. While cat owners are unaware of the true nature of this surgery. They are never told that it is an amputation of the last toe bones in a cat’s paw; and it actually does more harm than good. \nTHE PAW PROJECT is a documentary that takes us inside the issue. Sharing testimony from industry professionals and pet-owners alike\, THE PAW PROJECT examines the emotional and physical cost that a cat pays when declawed; and reveals the profit that the procedure generates for veterinary doctors across the nation. Despite the physical and behavioral harm inflicted on cats that are declawed\, many veterinarians continue to recommend the procedure\, which costs upwards of $900.00 per hour – even for very young kittens. \nVeterinarian Dr. Jennifer Conrad wants it stop. While it often puts her at odds with many in her professional field\, she continues to lead the struggle. Step by step\, the film follows Conrad as she refutes arguments from representatives of the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)\, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)\, all in her effort to protect the well being of these felines. THE PAW PROJECT chronicles her journey from her work as an exotic animal veterinarian in Hollywood to legislative hearings\, where she urges elected officials to ban declawing. \nFor more information\, please visit www.pawproject.org.

SUMMARY:Working Writer's Cocktail Hour\, 4th edition
DESCRIPTION:In the interests of further cultivating and connecting the writing community of Memphis\, story booth is hosting the fourth edition of Crosstown Arts‘ Working Writers’ Cocktail Hour\, on Wednesday\, June 8\, from 5:30 to 7 pm\, in conjunction with sponsor Memphis Daily News. \nAll writers who live and work in Memphis–whether writers of poetry\, fiction\, creative nonfiction\, screenwriting\, playwriting\, journalism\, art writing\, music writing—are invited to visit story booth for an hour (or so) to do what it normally takes an expensive conference to make happen during the down-times: bring a group of writers together to mingle\, have a drink\, and make connections with other working writers they may or may not have known before. The founding idea of San Francisco Writers’ Grotto serves as some inspiration here: “Our original hypothesis–that community nurtures productivity–has proven abundantly true.” \nWhether your day-job is writing-related or not–if you work at writing\, this means you. \nThis event is free. story booth’s address is 438 N. Cleveland Ave. \nFor more information on story booth or Crosstown Arts\, call Nat Akin at 901.573.8444\, or visit crosstownarts.org.

SUMMARY:Desert Migration (Outflix Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Saved by the introduction of protease inhibitors in the mid-1990s\, many HIV positive men needed to rebuild the lives they thought they’d never be able to live. In an effort to reach equilibrium with the virus inside them\, some migrated to Southern California’s Palm Springs in the hope of finding a healing desert oasis. But is this environment\, with its tolerant population and constant sunshine\, enough to eradicate the grief they carry within them\, and strengthen them against the medications slowly poisoning their bodies? \n\nDirected by Daniel F. Cardone\nUSA | 80 minutes | 2015 \nFilm Screening with panel discussion to follow. \n\n\n\n\nOutflix Ticket Website: http://outflixfestival.org/events/desert-migration/\nMovie Website: www.desertmigrationmovie.com\n Synopsis: http://desertmigrationmovie.com/synopsis
