SUMMARY:“But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out”
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out” by Coe Lapossy on the East Pop-Out Walls.\n \nThe East Pop-Out Walls at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe first time Coe Lapossy heard someone talk about compartmentalizing their life\, so they could make all the separate and demanding things work together\, theyI were a kid watching a television interview with Jodie Foster. It was the typical interview question\, “How do you handle such a busy life? How do you accomplish all this?” Foster very nonchalantly explained that she just compartmentalizes everything. Lapossy remembers realizing that this was a completely unfamiliar way of being. They did not understand what Jodie was talking about\, and they did not believe they could live that way. But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out is about “no compartments.” Everything is mashing together in life all the time — and while Lapossy longs for stability and order — it’s all happening at once and they love how that feels — what that allows for. Not to be confused with multitasking\, this is a kind of nurtured chaos. \nThrough a resistance to the tenants of modernism\, Coe Lapossy centers erased histories and marginalized labor. They create work that revels in the subversive\, how it sneaks in and makes change\, how it works undetected because it must. They revisit artifacts of queerness wedged within a seemingly straight world\, choosing these references\, linking narratives from various times throughout history\, things forgotten\, erased\, messages that “flew under the radar.” With the reuse of these artifacts they create a meditation on what bodies we value\, how we memorialize\, and what/who survives under the conditions we create.

SUMMARY:“Days”
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “Days” by Noah Thomas Miller in the East Gallery\, South Pop-Out Wall\, and Art Bar Bar Top.\n \nThe East Gallery\, South Pop-Out Wall\, and Art Bar Bar Top at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nDays follows the everyday observations of the structures we interact with. The houses become more than just a residence\, but become individuals themselves. The shadows start to blur the line of where the walls stop and where a presence might begin. \nHave you ever touched a door knob and thought it felt like shaking someone’s hand? Instead of treating it like a utilitarian tool? \nOne can start to feel their identity fuse with the walls around them day after day. This new presence\, which we often call “home”\, silently witnesses all of our joys and sorrows\, and the passage of time. They are the only ones who have a deep understanding of our solitude and shared narratives. \nThese pieces are carved wood\, masked in layers of house paint\, and nailed together in a similar fashion as the places that house them. This is done to connect the viewer to the physicality and craftsmanship inherent in the creation of homes.\n\nNoah Thomas Miller is Illinois-born but finds his home in Memphis. He works in multivalent mediums\, whether that be woodworking\, film\, sound installation\, or a combination of materials\, to preserve memory and tell stories. \nHis work is constantly deconstructing and reconstructing a scene to find its essence. It’s easier to recall a feeling than the details of an image. One can find that in most of his work — stripping the image of detail (or color) and isolating the tone of a scene to tell the narrative itself. \nHe attended Memphis College of Art and has continued his practice through work with museums\, film programs\, art institutions\, and most importantly at home.

SUMMARY:“The Molasses Man & Other Delta Tales”
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “The Molasses Man & Other Delta Tales” by Ahmad George in the West Gallery.\n \nThe West Gallery at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe Molasses Man & Other Delta Tales serves as an anthology of stories based off of Ahmad George’s life and experiences with people they’ve encountered here and not. These works feature scenes with existing and non-existing figures from folklore and mythology sourced from the American South\, elsewhere\, and created. \nAhmad George is a painter and multimedia artist from Memphis\, Tennessee. They’ve shown at NADA Miami as well as national and international group and solo exhibitions.Through their work\, they explore the liminal space between reality\, mythology\, folklore\, and self. Their worldbuilding thins the veil of this world by mixing  imagery of the American South (mostly scenes from Tennessee and Mississippi) with local and sourced myths from different parts of the world. Oftentimes\, they use people from their own life to be the protagonists of these narratives. Major themes they explore in their paintings currently include generational history\,transformation\, consequence\, and spiritual alchemy.

SUMMARY:Alice Hasen & Josh Threlkeld EP Release Show
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Alice Hasen & Josh Threlkeld EP Release Show in The Green Room.\n \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, August 24\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nAlice and Josh are a folk/rock duo that is both woodsy and jammy. Improvisation is a specialty of both performers\, and they will often “go off the beaten track” often in order to keep every show fresh and spontaneous. \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld”s collaborative EP\, “The Aisling Farm Sessions\,” drops August 25\, 2023. This six-track project will be a formal introduction to the Memphis duo.  Both Hasen and Threlkeld come from strong instrumental backgrounds\, with cumulative decades of experience in both the classical and folk worlds. The pair loves to go to spontaneous and unexpected places\, and this project reflects that passion (the first song is entitled “Off the Beaten”). From there\, Threlkeld reinterprets an Old Time fiddle tune\, “Angeline the Baker\,” and Hasen evokes wistful longing for her Vermont roots with “Come Round.” Songs covered include Van Morrison’s “Moondance\,” “Promentory” (from The Last of the Mohicans)\, and “Achilles Jig” in a special nod to fiddler Bill Thurman. “The Aisling Farm Sessions” was recorded live in March 2023 in Limerick cabin\, on Len and Susan Lawhon’s Aisling Farm. \nBio: \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld combine instrumental virtuosity\, creative songwriting and a rainbow of tonal colors in Memphis’ newest duo act. From reinventions of old fiddle tunes to subversive and dynamic improvisation\, the pair transports their audience to vibrant and unexpected soundscapes. Inspired by spontaneity\, Alice and Josh assure that no one performance will ever resemble the next.

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Persona at Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 24\, 2023\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nIngmar Bergman / 1966 / 83 minutes / Not Rated \nBy the mid-’60s\, Ingmar Bergman had already conjured many of the cinema’s most unforgettable images. But with the radical Persona\, he attained new levels of visual poetry. In the first of a series of legendary performances for Bergman\, Liv Ullmann plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute; an equally mesmerizing Bibi Andersson is the garrulous young nurse caring for her in a remote island cottage. While isolated together there\, the women undergo a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference. Performed with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by Sven Nykvist\, the influential Persona is a penetrating\, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth (Criterion). \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:PLOT/TWIST (Part 2) feat. Blueshift Ensemble\, Bluff City Liars\, and ICEBERG New Music
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents PLOT/TWIST (Part 2) feat. Blueshift Ensemble\, Bluff City Liars\, and ICEBERG New Music in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, August 19\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Concert begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $10 General Admission | $5 students \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nICEBERG New Music partners with Blueshift Ensemble and Memphis’ premier improv group Bluff City Liars to create a new program of music and improvised drama. Ten pieces of never-before-heard music will inspire ten never-before-seen plays\, performed by some of Memphis’ best contemporary musicians and improvisers. \nThese concerts will feature Memphis premieres by Drake Andersen\, Victor Baez\, Stephanie Ann Boyd\, Alex Burtzos\, Yu-Chun Chien\, Derek Cooper\, Jack Frerer\, Max Grafe\, Gala Flagello\, Robin Haigh\, Paul Novak\, and Harry Stafylakis. Like all ICEBERG / Blueshift Ensemble events\, the two performances will be followed with an opportunity to talk with the composers\, musicians\, and improvisers. \nAugust 19\, 2023: PLOT/TWIST (Part 2) features music for violin\, viola\, cello\, and piano composed by Alex Burtzos\, Drake Andersen\, Stephanie Ann Boyd\, Max Grafe\, Derek Cooper\, and Paul Novak. \n\nABOUT ICEBERG NEW MUSIC\nICEBERG New Music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. ICEBERG’s mission is to promote the idea that substance\, not surface\, is the heart of music creation and perception. The collective’s ten member composers hail from different schools of thought and cultivate radically different sounds – from musical theater and indie rock to avant-garde sounds and electronic installations – but their contrasting musical languages belie a shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. \nABOUT BLUFF CITY LIARS\nBluff City Liars was formed in late 2017 as a project between four friends hoping to explore long form improv comedy – at the time a very rare commodity in Memphis. Quickly\, the group felt the spark of inspiration catch fire\, and Bluff City Liars was formed. \nOver time\, the troupe has grown both in size and in fan base. We run multiple monthly shows and offer workshops. We’ve also been signed as an associate company at TheatreWorks\, and we’ve even produced a show featuring Kevin McDonald of Kids In The Hall. \nWe provide high octane\, interactive\, and innovative laugh-out-loud comedy with a flair for both spontaneity and spectacle. But we also aim to build the improv community of Memphis with our free workshops and open-to-all jams. See a show\, or try the art for yourself – either way you’re helping us grow the comedy scene of the Bluff City. \nABOUT BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. Members of Blueshift are involved in almost every corner of the Memphis music community\, from performing in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, recording in the studio\, teaching at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College\, playing in your favorite local bands\, and composing original music for film. Founded by flutist Jenny Davis and cellist Jonathan Kirkscey in 2016\, Blueshift aims to bring classical music out of the concert hall and into the community.

Moving in its simplicity and gritty in its textures\, Five Easy Pieces is a lasting example of early 1970s American alienation. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: CHAMELEON STREET
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Chameleon Street at Crosstown Theater. \nWendell B. Harris Jr. / 1990 / 94 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nWinner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival — yet criminally under-seen for over three decades — Chameleon Street recounts the improbable but true story of Michigan con man Douglas Street\, the titular “chameleon” who successfully impersonated his way up the socioeconomic ladder by posing as a magazine reporter\, an Ivy League student\, a respected surgeon\, and a corporate lawyer. Elevated by a dexterous performance and daring direction from multi-hyphenate actor-writer-director Wendell B. Harris Jr.\, the film pins a lens on race\, class and performance in American identity\, which has lost none of its relevance. At once piercingly funny and aesthetically mischievous\, Chameleon Street is a “lost masterpiece of Black American cinema” (BFI) long overdue to take its rightful place in the independent film canon. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents: FEMALE TROUBLE
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents Female Trouble at Crosstown Theater. \nJohn Waters / 1974 / 97 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nGlamour has never been more grotesque than in Female Trouble\, which injects the Hollywood melodrama with anarchic decadence. Divine\, director John Waters’ larger-than-life muse\, engulfs the screen with charisma as Dawn Davenport\, the living embodiment of the film’s lurid mantra\, “Crime is beauty\,” who progresses from a teenage nightmare hell-bent on getting cha-cha heels for Christmas to a fame monster whose egomaniacal impulses land her in the electric chair. Shot in Waters’ native Baltimore on 16 mm\, with a cast drawn from his beloved troupe of regulars\, the Dreamlanders (including Mink Stole\, David Lochary\, Mary Vivian Pearce\, Edith Massey\, and Cookie Mueller)\, this film—the director’s favorite of his work with Divine — comes to life through the tinsel-toned vision of production designer Vincent Peranio and costume designer/makeup artist Van Smith. An endlessly quotable fan favorite\, Female Trouble offers up perverse pleasures that never fail to satisfy. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk: The Gospel According to Jazz Edition (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kafe Kirk: The Gospel According to Jazz Edition featuring Kirk Whalum\, Kevin Whalum\, and Keia Johnson. \nSunday\, July 16\, 2023\nCrosstown Theater\nBox office opens at 5 pm | Doors open at 5:30 pm\nShow begins at 6 pm\nTickets: SOLD OUT \nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This iteration’s performance will feature Keia Johnson and Kevin Whalum. \nKEIA JOHNSON \n With over a decade of experience in the entertainment field; Keia has made a name for herself as the multifaceted artist that attacks each opportunity with gusto and her signature smile. Keia was born in San Antonio\, Texas but grew up all over the world in a military family. She listened to a wide range of artists growing up\, but it was the move to Memphis that helped her establish her sound and performance style. She has performed on some of the most iconic stages in Memphis (The Orpheum\, Cannon Center\, and festivals) and with some of the best talent Memphis has to offer\, like Justin Timberlake\, Wendy Moten\, The Bar-Kays\, and David Porter of Stax Records. Years later\, It was American Idol that served as the true catalyst for Keia to recognize who she was as an artist; the talent competition led her to Hollywood where “Miss Congeniality” wowed the judges for two seasons. Her audition performance of Celine Dion’s vocally rigorous “My Heart Will Go On” prompted guest judge and musical role model Mary J. Blige to simply declare: “She can sing!” In 2016\, the world seemed to open up for Keia as she travelled for three years with the BB King Allstar band on Holland America Cruise lines singing blues\, rock-and-roll\, jazz\, classic R&B\, and soul. She officially launched KJ Management\, an Entertainment Agency in 2021\, under which she had developed exclusive Memphis soul and jazz shows for riverboats. She gives private Vocal lessons to Artists & Students as well as artist development. She is currently writing/producing shows and musicals for regional theaters and stages. Make sure to keep up with her at XperiencEntertainment.com. \nKEVIN WHALUM \nKevin Whalum is best known for his stellar work with Kirk on his brother’s gospel series entitled\, Kirk Whalum\, The Gospel According To Jazz\, Chapters 1-4. \nChapter One was released in 1998 to critical acclaim\, and it put Kevin on everyone’s radar with his medley take on the Negro spirituals\, Wade In The Water/Motherless Child. It broke new ground in gospel. No one had tried anything that daring vocally in the genre previously. When he and Kirk performed the song later that year on the Stellar Awards broadcast\, the audience gave them a standing ovation. That was a pivotal moment. “Yeah\, that was special. I knew I was in front of some gospel purists who believe gospel should be one thing and one thing only\, but I reject the notion that praise for the Almighty has anything to do with a certain group of chords\, \nor a certain rhythmic pattern. Gospel is defined as the good news\, and as long as that is what fills my heart as I perform\, that is what will exude from me as I stand before God’s children anywhere in the world; in churches or nightclubs. They will feel me if they allow themselves to\, and aren’t too busy judging me because I sound a little different than what they consider gospel. If you love Jesus as I do\, you will feel me.”If Chapter 1 was Kevin’s introduction to gospel music fans\, then\, Chapter 2 was the \nsolidification of his presence. That release spawned the remake of an old Johnny “Guitar” Watson classic called\, I Wanna TaTa Ya\, Baby from the 1970s. Kirk has always left Kevin alone to choose the songs he wanted to record on each volume. “Kirk trusts me to provide him with solid ideas for covers\, so I said we should take that song and rename it I Wanna TaTa Ya\, Jesus. Our ‘thing’ is to take established hits from artists who didn’t necessarily write them for a gospel audience\, and flip them on their heads\, so I rewrote the lyric to change TaTa\, Ya to mean Thank Ya\, and boom…people loved it. That song was released in 2003\, and yet it is still requested everywhere from Dallas to Tokyo\, and from Stockholm to Cape Town.”Chapter 3 is responsible for bringing in the R&B fans among the Whalum brothers’ audience. For this live recording\, Kevin chose a song by the late Luther Vandross called\, Make Me A Believer. He would be joined on it by the now three-time Grammy winner\, Lalah Hathaway. The song was a runaway hit\, and was nominated for a Stellar Award for best video in 2008. Again\, Kevin rewrote the original lyric to suit its new purpose\, and found massive critical and commercial success. “Lalah and I are good friends\, and we had an absolute blast singing together. She’s such a singular talent. I knew it would do well\, although I had no idea it would do \nwhat it eventually did.”Chapter 4 is the latest installment in the series\, and it promises to be as noteworthy as the previous three. Kevin now has three solo albums under his belt: the self-produced solo debut\, Timetable (2002); the George Duke-produced\, One Life To Love (2008); and the new self-produced\, I Live For You (2016). Although Kevin eschews any effort to force him into a category or genre’\, he freely admits to defining himself as “primarily a jazz vocalist who just happens to be a Christian.” He exhorts\, “I hope I never agree to be just one thing. A true artist never wants that. I have been—and will remain—free to explore the musical universe. There’s too much out here to stay locked into one soundscape forever. Music is big\, but Jesus is infinitely bigger. I want to touch his face with everything he puts in my heart to do. I hope people find my new record\, I Live For You\, refreshing\, and dare I say it\, groundbreaking.” \nKIRK WHALUM \nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis (Tennessee) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston\, Texas nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).Kirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011) for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.
