SUMMARY:MicroCinema Club
DESCRIPTION:Monthly short film screening series\, presented by Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts. \nThis month: The Ann Arbor Film Festival Tour\nThe longest running avant-garde and experimental film festival in North America (est. 1963) presents nine new short films that will expand your imagination. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m./Screening begins at 7 p.m. Admission is pay-what-you-can. \n\nMore information:\nNEITHER GOD NOR SANTA MARIA | Samuel M. Delgado and Helena Girón \nMadrid\, Spain | 2015 | 12 min\nIn the daily life of a woman\, the magic of her tales begin to materialize as night falls. Night is the time when travel is possible. \nBISONHEAD | Elizabeth Lo\nLos Angeles\, CA | 2015 | 10 min\nA family of Ponderai Native Americans embark on a controversial journey from northern Montana to Yellowstone to take part in the federal culling of 900 wild bison. \nTHE MESS | Peter Burr\nBrooklyn\, NY | 2015 | 14 min\nIn this game-like computer animation we take a journey to the threshold of a utopian labyrinth. Following the perspective of a solitary female figure whose job is to clean up the mess it inadvertently spawned\, we end up in a seemingly endless hall of mirrors. \nTHE PERPETUAL MOTION OF MY LOVE FOR YOU | Karen Yasinsky\nBaltimore\, MD | 2016 | 8 min\nA collage film slipping between narrative starts of images and sounds: May Sarton’s snapshots\, a resplendent Liz Taylor\, internal and external awkwardnesses\, a short respite of peace and a dogged\, deeply sad positivism. If this movie was a person\, it would be the awkward girl\, but she will never gain grace and confidence in her intelligence when older. She will forever remain in 8th grade with her frustrations and ambiguities. \nLOVE UNDER WILL OF THE HAGS LONG TOOTH | Mica O’Herlihy\nWestby\, WI | 2015 | 4 min\nA psychotronic gender-fucked pagan meditation on the animal in us all. \nFUNDIR | Allison Cekala\nBoston\, MA | 2015 | 23 min\nA biography of a material — the processing and importation of Boston’s road salt from one of its main sources in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile to the ice-covered streets of Boston. \nTHE RESONANCE | Mateusz Sadowski\n6 min | 2013 | Poznan\, Poland\nThe Resonance was made using stop-motion animation. The artist split the recorded footage into separate frames which were printed and re-photographed. The process underlined the characteristics of two contrary realities – photography and video. Providing the viewer with an insight into its own making\, Sadowski’s video is both a reflection on scientific theories about the structure of the world and an attempt to create an alternative reality. Winner\, Best Animated Film \nBABA DANA TALKS TO THE WOLVES | Ralitsa Doncheva\nBulgaria/Canada | 2015 | 11 min\nAn impressionistic portrait of Baba Dana and her solitary existence in one of the oldest monasteries in Bulgaria\, Zelenikovsky Monastery. Winner\, The Eileen Maitland Award for Women’s Voice \nnot even nothing can be free of ghosts | Rainer Kohlberger\nVienna\, Austria | 2016 | 11 min\nAn Algorithmic work generated entirely from computer-generated code; where “the intentional overload of the human perception apparatus leads to visual impressions that appear exclusively in the literal “eye of the beholder.” These “ghosts” appear from “nothing” and are “nothing”; they are mere hallucinations evoked by the imperfect human-biological data processing system” – Norbert Pfaffenbichler.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: The Art of Audio
DESCRIPTION:Monthly filmmaking forum presented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts \nMarch topic: The Art of Audio\n\n\n\n\n\nThe recording and mixing of production sound are easily the most under-appreciated and misunderstood disciplines in filmmaking. All too frequently\, quality movies and videos are ruined because the proper respect is not given to the craft of audio engineering. \nPlease join us as Running Pony sound technician Nathan Reisman and Music + Arts Studio post-production audio engineer Kevin Houston lead a hands-on workshop and discussion to help you improve the sound quality of your next project. They will walk us through the audio pre-production\, production\, and post-production processes\, best on-set and in-studio practices\, as well as a breakdown of essential gear for both low- and high-budget projects.  \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m./panel discussion at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. Complimentary beverages will be available.

SUMMARY:Up in Arms Collective presents: RESPONSE
DESCRIPTION:What if dissent is a dance? What if revolution begins with a pas de deux or an artful kick in the pants? \nTwenty-one artists gather strength through coming together and creating works that explore the myth of superwoman\, experiences of femininity\, shoes\, burning bridges\, first world privilege\, and untarnished hope. \nUp in Arms Collective is a community of diverse Memphis dance artists who have come together to collaborate and create three evenings of original works and performances. \nEach evening’s performance will be one-of-a kind and feature different dances. Participating dance artists include Bethany Bak\, Sheri Bancroft\, Travis Bradley\, Rebecca Rose Cochran\, Josh Colfer\, Marie Dennan\, Lauren Hales\, Emily Hefley\, Stephanie Hom\, Jill Guyton-Nee\, Orixa Bowers\, Jenn King\, Louisa Koeppel\, Sarah Ledbetter\, Kristen Lucas\, Tamara Prince-Parrish\, Lauren Stallings\, Wayne Smith\, and Erin D.H. Williams along with filmmaker N’Seeka MacPherson and photographer Yasmine Omari. \nUp in Arms Collective was born out of the need for the dance community to respond to what is happening in America in an open and affirming environment. The process leading up to the performances has allowed artists time\, space\, and energy as well as support to build and create\, as they bring their responses to life through movement and dance. \nA response is a reaction to something and an impulse caused by a change or event. The responses are candid\, personal\, and as diverse as the dance artists themselves and explore power\, fear\, truth\, boldness\, self-determination\, activism\, love\, support\, protection\, humor\,and revolution. \nWorld-renowned dance icon Pina Bausch once said: “Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.” \nWhile we are all unique\, Up in Arms believes we are stronger when we come together–united. We find one another and connect and share and discover we are not lost but when we respond through dance\, we are empowered and through RESPONSE\, we hope to leave others empowered. Art has the power to change us all and transform the world. \nDance artist and collaborator Sarah Ledbetter says\, “I’m basically using this platform to\nbush whack some breathing room for the sacred/secular feminine. To call up friends in big\nplaces that we desperately need now. I’m not trying to show off. I’m trying to show up.” \nTickets are $10 cash only and available at the door. To find out more about RESPONSE and/or make reservations\, like Up in Arms Collective on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Yoga with Cats
DESCRIPTION:The We Need to Talk exhibition — an open call show of break-up art and artifacts — may have you feeling a little broken-hearted. But those old relationships were in the past. That was zen. This is meow. \nOn the final day of the exhibition\, we invite you to take a moment to “paws” and reflect and heal your broken heart in this Yoga with Cats event hosted by Memphis Animals Services (MAS)\, Crosstown Arts\, and Co-Motion Studio. \nMAS will have approximately 10 adoptable cats at the Crosstown Arts gallery from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adriene Holland\, co-owner of Co-Motion Studio\, will teach two yoga classes — one at 11 a.m. and another at noon — during which cats will be free-roaming and interacting with the yogis. \nPeople can participate by either attending a class at 11 a.m. or noon\, or by visiting between 10 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 2 p.m. to play with (and hopefully adopt) kitties. To attend a class\, sign up here. The 11 a.m. class is now full. \nThe class is free to attend to those who plan to adopt a cat. Participants who aren’t able to adopt a cat are asked to make a pay-what- you-can donation. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mats\, as Crosstown Arts will not have any extra mats to loan. \nAll cat adoptions at the Yoga with Cats event will be $35 cash-only (nearly half off the regular adoption fee) and will include spay/neuter\, microchip\, vaccinations\, FIV/FeLV test\, customized ID tag (to be picked up at the shelter)\, and a collar. \nSign up for a yoga class

SUMMARY:The Break-Up Show Dress Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:Free and open-to-the-public dress rehearsal for The Break-Up Show: Episode Six. This comedy troupe transforms the indignities of bad dates and break-up drama into the sort of comedy that may make you feel like it was worth the pain. \nThe Break-Up Show troupe invites everyone to stop in for a behind-the-scenes look at how comedy is born from romantic devastation. Watch a “warts and all” dress rehearsal as they prepare for their February 11th — one-night only — appearance at the New Daisy on Beale Street featuring music by The McStays and Robby. Only the live portions of the show will be rehearsed and\, just like in a real rehearsal\, the cast will be stopping and starting\, messing up\, and most likely breaking up (with laughter) for most of the evening. Stop in for a preview! \nThe rehearsal coincides with the opening of “We Need to Talk\,” an open-call exhibition of break-up art and artifacts at 422 N. Cleveland from 5-8 p.m.

SUMMARY:The Moonpie Project presents: Brandon Marshall
DESCRIPTION:A new mural by Brandon Marshall memorializing artist Ronnie “BETOR” Bobal \nLocation: Crosstown Arts alley between 430 & 438 N. Cleveland \nFree food + drinks \nThe Moonpie Project is an ongoing\, rotating mural series curated by Michael Roy in memory of muralist Brad Wells. \nOrganized in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\n \n\n\n \n\nAbout Brandon Marshall:\nBrandon Marshall is a visual artist specializing in mural-making and public art with a strong focus on community engagement and mobilization. Marshall’s current professional endeavors stem from an extensive background in the hip-hop community as a graffiti artist\, B-Boy\, promoter\, and educator. Marshall is the founder and lead organizer of the “Soul Food” graffiti art festival and curates other rotating walls in Memphis. He has secured wall space and painted at mural festivals from Denver to Melbourne and constantly strives for excellence within each of his artistic practices. \nAbout  Ronnie “BETOR” Bobal:\nRonnie “BETOR” Bobal was among the first generation of graffiti artists born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. Bobal was considered a pioneer of style and was respected nationwide among graffiti writers for his unique abstract lettering styles. In his pieces\, the viewer will note the thoughtful construction of his alphabet through the use of ribbon-like textures\, which are contrasted by hard-nosed\, slab-serif bars. BETOR proudly represented the U.H. Crew locally\, and the prestigious\, Los Angeles-based I.C.R. Crew. Although considered by many to be royalty within the subculture\, he simultaneously held a reputation for his laidback demeanor and notorious humility. His legacy as a dedicated and prolific master of the craft lives on through his crew mates and friends and by the artwork he has left behind throughout the country.

SUMMARY:We Need to Talk
DESCRIPTION:An open call exhibition of break-up art and artifacts submitted by more than 40 local artists. \nExhibition Opening Reception: Friday\, February 10\, 5-8 p.m.\nExhibition on View: February 10-February 25 \n\nSometimes\, love ends. Romantic relationships\, familial relationships\, relationships with places\, our former selves\, or even really\, really great pieces of pizza — they all have to end. These relationships tend to be hard to let go of. Whether the break-up was genial\, terrible\, or downright awful\, most people have an object\, memento\, or souvenir of each broken relationship that they just can’t throw away. These mundane objects are transformed into totems of memory\, becoming the holy tangibles of a relationship ceased. This exhibition focuses on those objects and their stories and aims to offer one final bit of catharsis. Or at least a final chance to say … “Boy\, Bye!!!”  \nThe idea for this exhibition is drawn from the Museum of Broken Relationships\, which has two locations in Los Angeles and Zagreb\, Croatia. The museum website states: “The original concepts of an artist ex-couple in the midst of their own breakup\, whom wondered what people did with objects that had been meaningful in their relationships. In 2006\, they had their first exhibition and the Museum has since toured internationally\, amassing an amazing collection. They opened their permanent museum in Zagreb\, Croatia in 2010\, and a follow-up museum has also sprung up in Los Angeles\, California.” \nCrosstown Arts has organized this exhibition to coincide with The Break Up Show 6\, taking place at The New Daisy Theater on Saturday\, February 11th. During the opening reception of “We Need To Talk” on Friday\, February 10th\, The Break-Up Show cast will be performing a free and open-to-the-public dress rehearsal of The Break Up Show 6 next door at 430 N. Cleveland. \nSome work may be listed for sale. SUMMARY:Grid Gestures
DESCRIPTION:New work by Julie Bennett Ashton using the grid as a compositional element \nThat modernist device the grid is the inspirational fulcrum underlying this body of work. Instead of dominating the art\, the grid serves as a flexible suggestion: thus this simple pattern becomes less stubborn on a compositional level and is thereby freed from its connotative roles as formal rubric and conceptual cage.
