SUMMARY:The Speed Trials Arcade
DESCRIPTION:New work by Crosstown Arts resident artist Josh Short \nInspired by 1980s era arcade games\, Josh Short has created a series of interactive driving simulators based on popular American mythologies about the road and our love/hate relationship with cars. Josh uses cast-off exercise equipment\, hand-made banners\, remote-controlled cars\, surveillance cameras\, and detritus found from the road to create a mechanical “Bricolage.” \nShort’s machines invite viewers to vicariously experience the life of a long haul trucker or an outlaw biker driving into the sunset. Using topical inspiration\, Josh has created a simulator “Slow Speed Chase” inspired by the 1994 O.J. Simpson white Bronco LA freeway incident. \nThe whole experience is moderated by the “Final Boss.” The artist controls the speed of the roads\, monitors the crashes\, and the arcade music accompanying the games. \nCome Experience the arcade that never was …

SUMMARY:Talking Back to the Screen: Feminism & Film Criticism
DESCRIPTION:Monthly filmmaking forum presented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts \nIn Alice Bolin’s upcoming book\, Dead Girls\, she writes about moving to L.A. and seeing the city through a white male literary lens\, and needing to trust her own eyes rather than what she’s read. Miriam Bale’s path through the male-dominated world of film criticism at New York newspapers was similarly one of learning to trust her own eyes. The two writers will have a dialogue about different ways to engage with writing about film\, a misogynistic industry\, as women. Dead Girls (which covers Twin Peaks to True Detective) is an essay collection out in June 2018 from William Morrow/ HarperCollins. Alice Bolin teaches nonfiction at the University of Memphis. \nMiriam Bale is new Senior Programmer of the Indie Memphis Film Festival. \nDoors open at 6:30pm | panel discussion begins at 7pm\nFree and open to the public\nComplimentary beverages

SUMMARY:Family Trees
DESCRIPTION:New work by Joy Murray and Timothy Allen. \nTim’s father\, Mark Allen\, will play classical guitar during the show. \nOrganized by the artists. \nAbout Joy and Timothy:\nJoy Murray and her son Timothy Allen are self-taught Memphis artists. This show will feature their collaborative work on the concept of family trees – the tangled roots and the unique fruits. They will also show their individual work from the past few years. \nJoy works in a narrative style and uses text in her paintings. She uses many kinds of paper\, watercolor\, acrylic\, and collage. She explores concepts of transformation\, how our age and health direct the changes in our lives\, and the intersection of human life and the natural world. \nTim is a freelance filmmaker who travels all over the country. He began to paint to voice his subconscious ideas. He works intuitively with color and form and is often surprised at what he creates. His pieces are finely detailed and often have multiple layers. Both artists find a bit of poetry in their creations.

SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Alex Paulus \n\n\n\nPresenting artists: Michael Malone\, Natalie Gray\, Lexi Perkins \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback. \n

SUMMARY:Anti-Twilight Dark Band
DESCRIPTION:An evening of ambient improvisation with Jimmy Crosthwait and Greg Faiers. \n\nAnti-Twilight Dark Band: The intersection of ambient music\, jazz and improvisation. \nThe Anti-Twilight Dark Band features Jimmy Crosthwait on zen chimes and Greg Faiers playing heavily processed guitar. The chimes are a byproduct of Crosthwait’s metal art work. He uses sticks (various metal and wooden implements) to create a musical percussive effect. Jimmy’s zen chimes have a sound all their own but do suggest southeast Asian and African influences. \nGreg’s guitar work / atmospherics is heavily influenced by the likes of Brian Eno\, Robert Fripp\, Daniel Lanois\, David Sylvian\, and others well known in the ambient music world. While some sequences are preconceived\, most of the performances are truly improvised on the fly.
