SUMMARY:Get Out Screening
DESCRIPTION:Screening of Get Out\, the Academy Award-winning 2017 horror film directed by Jordan Peele\, in the Crosstown Arts Theater. \nTickets: $5 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nGet a sneak peek of the new Crosstown Arts Theater in this first mic check event. We’re hosting a series of public mic checks to test the sound for film\, live music\, public speaking\, and live theater\, and the first one will feature this special Halloween-themed film screening. \nAbout Get Out:\nNow that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend\, Rose (Allison Williams)\, have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating\, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first\, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship\, but as the weekend progresses\, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined. \nFuture mic check dates:\nNov. 14\, 6 pm — Children’s Theater performance (free)\nNov. 16\, noon — Public speaking test (free)\nDec. 15\, 7 pm – Holiday Jazz Concert ($15 tickets)

SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Melissa Farris\nPresenting artists:\n– Darcie Beeman Black\n– Lauren Asta (one of our residents)\n– Eric Painter\n– Cheryl Noland\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \n\nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center Supply Store for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback.

SUMMARY:My Magical Manifesto
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artist Darius Wallace will present his one-man show\, My Magical Manifesto\, at the third public “mic check” event at Crosstown Arts Theater. SUMMARY:Don't Stop Dancing to the Music! A Conversation with The Bar-Kays
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with The Bar-Kays’ Larry Dodson and Winston Stewart. Free and open to the public. Moderated by Memphis radio personality (and Crosstown Arts community outreach coordinator) Porsche Stevens\, this freewheeling conversation will include stories from the band’s rich past and much more. \nFollowing the tragic 1967 plane crash that resulted in the tragic death of four of its members and their mentor\, Otis Redding\, The Bar-Kays reformed with new members and began a nearly five-decade run of chart success and high-energy live performances. \nTwo key members of the second Bar-Kays era were lead vocalist Larry Dodson\, who recently retired after nearly fifty years in the band\, and keyboard player Winston Stewart. Both members played at the 1972 Wattstax Festival\, stuck with Stax Records until its closure in 1975\, and helped the band redefine their sound during the disco era. \nIn conjunction with Give a Damn: Music & Activism at Stax Records\, on view at Crosstown Arts through Dec. 2.

SUMMARY:ReMix Memphis
DESCRIPTION:Join musician/writer Alex Greene for a listening session featuring the sounds of Memphis. \nUsing an app called Loopy HD\, Alex goes through different groups of sounds\, slowly adding and subtracting noises recorded right on the streets of Memphis. You might hear simple sounds\, like feet walking through leaves\, the roar of an overhead jet\, or a leaf blower. You might hear more suggestive sounds\, like music from an amphitheater\, gun shots\, or tornado sirens. They’re all geared to get people thinking about what surrounds them every day\, and — most importantly — what they like or dislike hearing. Participants are given cards they’ll use to rate each sound as positive\, negative\, or neutral. \nIn addition\, Greene will play some of the creative mash-ups that local musicians and producers have contributed\, using field recordings from the Memphis streets. It will be the first public airing of works slated to be collected in a dedicated Memphis 3.0 album.
