SUMMARY:Indie Memphis Nights
DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis and Temple Israel present a screening of Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405\, the Academy Award winner for 2018 Documentary Short Subject. \nThis is a portrait of a brilliant 56-year-old artist who is represented by one of Los Angeles’ top galleries. Her body of raw\, emotional work reveals a lifetime of extreme depression and anxiety. \nThe artist\, Mindy Alper\, has suffered through electro-shock therapy\, multiple commitments to mental institutions\, and a 10-year period without speech. Her only consistent means of communicating has been to channel her hyper self-awareness into drawings and sculpture of powerful psychological clarity. \nThrough an examination of her work\, interviews\, reenactments\, the building of an eight-and-a-half-foot paper-mache bust of her beloved psychiatrist\, we learn how she has emerged from a life of darkness and isolation to a life that includes love\, trust\, and laughter. \nIndie Memphis Nights is presented by Orion FCU

SUMMARY:Screening of The Departure
DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis presents a screening of The Departure. \nIttetsu Nemoto\, a former punk-turned-Buddhist-priest in Japan\, has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live. But this work has come increasingly at the cost of his own family and health\, as he refuses to draw lines between his patients and himself. THE DEPARTURE captures Nemoto at a crossroads\, when his growing self-destructive tendencies lead him to confront the same question his patients ask him: what makes life worth living? \nFeaturing Q&A with Mike LaBonte (Memphis Crisis Center) and Joann Self Selvidge (Memphis Women in Film).

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Filming on Film
DESCRIPTION:Many filmmakers might argue that the film vs. digital debate is dead in the water and that digital has finally won out for good. But many of the major releases in 2017 were actually shot entirely\, or at least partially\, on film\, including Wonder Woman\, The Post\, Justice League\, Phantom Thread\, The Florida Project and I\, Tonya. \nJoin Memphis film-making pioneer Mike McCarthy in a discussion about his own experiences shooting on film\, why a filmmaker in 2018 might choose to shoot on film\, and where to find resources to do so. \nMike McCarthy is an artist\, musician\, writer\, filmmaker\, and Memphian by way of Tupelo\, Mississippi.  Mike released his first full-length film\, Damselvis\, Daughter of Helvis in 1994 and has been making films ever since.  Some of Mike’s films include Teenage Tupelo\, The Sore Losers\, Superstarlet A.D.\, and Cigarette Girl.  Mike is currently working with a non-profit TV station in Albany\, Mississippi\, called Hill Country Network to develop new programming. \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for filmmakers presented collaboratively by Crosstown Arts & Indie Memphis. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:30 pm | discussion at 7 pm

SUMMARY:Wish Book: James Benning Reception & Screening
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for selected work by James Benning | Curated by Terri Phillips and Brian Pera \nReception\, filmmaker Q&A\, and screening of measuring change (60 min)\, 2016 \n\nThe Wish Book series is a triannual exhibition with a focus on artists’ films. Curators Brian Pera and Terri Phillips welcome internationally recognized artists\, filmmakers\, and critics to Memphis for this exciting new series\, which takes its name from the famed Sears Catalog and is hosted by Crosstown Arts at Crosstown Concourse\, itself once a major Sears distribution center. Drawing from a wide range of topics\, techniques\, and perspectives\, the films index the scope of work being done by artists in moving pictures. \n\nAbout the Artist:\nJames Benning has sometimes been referred to as a “filmmaker’s filmmaker”\, though he might prefer the more succinct “artist.” Alternately telescopic and microscopic\, his work often explores the American landscape and its social and environmental histories\, observing the movements and moments which characterize it in endlessly mutable patterns. \nEqually painterly\, sculptural\, and literate\, his films combine elements of sound and image in ways which invite interpretation through a uniquely cinematic immersion. Landscape is a function of time\, according to Benning\, and duration plays an important role in a viewer’s experience of his films\, endowing most of the work with distinctly cumulative effects. \nThe film’s narratives are generated by the highly subjective experience of prolonged observation. The rigorous formality of his approach generates meditations on place and memory\, prompting viewers to look more closely and differently at the spaces we inhabit. \nIn an environment increasingly mapped out by remote third party GPS systems\, Benning’s work reminds us what it is to see for ourselves. Benning began making films in the 1970s. Wish Book presents a selection of his most recent work\, much of which revisits and expands upon themes and motifs consistent throughout his oeuvre.

SUMMARY:Indie Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:Weekly film screenings hosted by Indie Memphis. Films will screen at Crosstown Arts\, Malco’s Studio on the Square\, and Ridgeway Theatre on a rotating basis. \nThis week: Are We Not Cats — New Yorker Eli (Michael Patrick Nicholson) loses his girlfriend\, home\, and job in less than 24 hours. After landing a job transporting car parts upstate to make some quick cash\, he meets Anya (Chelsea Lopez)\, a young woman who shares his fetish for eating hair. In this gorgeously lensed oddball debut of Xander Robin\, expanded from his celebrated short film\, a slow building\, nerve-racking body horror plot is rapped in the concerns of indie rom coms\, with potentially grotesque situations giving way to oddly heartwarming moments of mutual appreciation among these two subterranean New York outliers. \nPreceded by the short film Lance Lizardi. \nAdmission is pay-what-you-can | Presented by Orion \n

SUMMARY:The Speed Trials Arcade
DESCRIPTION:New work by Crosstown Arts resident artist Josh Short \nInspired by 1980s era arcade games\, Josh Short has created a series of interactive driving simulators based on popular American mythologies about the road and our love/hate relationship with cars. Josh uses cast-off exercise equipment\, hand-made banners\, remote-controlled cars\, surveillance cameras\, and detritus found from the road to create a mechanical “Bricolage.” \nShort’s machines invite viewers to vicariously experience the life of a long haul trucker or an outlaw biker driving into the sunset. Using topical inspiration\, Josh has created a simulator “Slow Speed Chase” inspired by the 1994 O.J. Simpson white Bronco LA freeway incident. \nThe whole experience is moderated by the “Final Boss.” The artist controls the speed of the roads\, monitors the crashes\, and the arcade music accompanying the games. \nCome Experience the arcade that never was …

SUMMARY:Talking Back to the Screen: Feminism & Film Criticism
DESCRIPTION:Monthly filmmaking forum presented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts \nIn Alice Bolin’s upcoming book\, Dead Girls\, she writes about moving to L.A. and seeing the city through a white male literary lens\, and needing to trust her own eyes rather than what she’s read. Miriam Bale’s path through the male-dominated world of film criticism at New York newspapers was similarly one of learning to trust her own eyes. The two writers will have a dialogue about different ways to engage with writing about film\, a misogynistic industry\, as women. Dead Girls (which covers Twin Peaks to True Detective) is an essay collection out in June 2018 from William Morrow/ HarperCollins. Alice Bolin teaches nonfiction at the University of Memphis. \nMiriam Bale is new Senior Programmer of the Indie Memphis Film Festival. \nDoors open at 6:30pm | panel discussion begins at 7pm\nFree and open to the public\nComplimentary beverages
