SUMMARY:Odidi
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition and performance by Nubia Yasin\, Jas Marie\, and Osarugue Otebele \nAs the story goes\, women are ribs — parts of a whole\, a sacrifice of part of man\, who had to give some slice of his body for a woman to be born. Odidi\, meaning whole\, challenges that idea. \nOdidi is a performance and exhibition by Nubia Yasin\, Jas Marie\, and Osarugue Otebele. Through a series of poems\, these three women invite you into a different kind of Eden\, one where Eve’s parts are hers and hers alone. One where she eats because the Lord would have it so. One where there are no snakes\, only vines\, from which the fruit grows ripe with waiting. \nExhibition at 7 pm | Performance at 8 pm

SUMMARY:Indie Memphis Nights
DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis and Temple Israel present a screening of Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405\, the Academy Award winner for 2018 Documentary Short Subject. \nThis is a portrait of a brilliant 56-year-old artist who is represented by one of Los Angeles’ top galleries. Her body of raw\, emotional work reveals a lifetime of extreme depression and anxiety. \nThe artist\, Mindy Alper\, has suffered through electro-shock therapy\, multiple commitments to mental institutions\, and a 10-year period without speech. Her only consistent means of communicating has been to channel her hyper self-awareness into drawings and sculpture of powerful psychological clarity. \nThrough an examination of her work\, interviews\, reenactments\, the building of an eight-and-a-half-foot paper-mache bust of her beloved psychiatrist\, we learn how she has emerged from a life of darkness and isolation to a life that includes love\, trust\, and laughter. \nIndie Memphis Nights is presented by Orion FCU

SUMMARY:Screening of The Departure
DESCRIPTION:Indie Memphis presents a screening of The Departure. \nIttetsu Nemoto\, a former punk-turned-Buddhist-priest in Japan\, has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live. But this work has come increasingly at the cost of his own family and health\, as he refuses to draw lines between his patients and himself. THE DEPARTURE captures Nemoto at a crossroads\, when his growing self-destructive tendencies lead him to confront the same question his patients ask him: what makes life worth living? \nFeaturing Q&A with Mike LaBonte (Memphis Crisis Center) and Joann Self Selvidge (Memphis Women in Film).

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Filming on Film
DESCRIPTION:Many filmmakers might argue that the film vs. digital debate is dead in the water and that digital has finally won out for good. But many of the major releases in 2017 were actually shot entirely\, or at least partially\, on film\, including Wonder Woman\, The Post\, Justice League\, Phantom Thread\, The Florida Project and I\, Tonya. \nJoin Memphis film-making pioneer Mike McCarthy in a discussion about his own experiences shooting on film\, why a filmmaker in 2018 might choose to shoot on film\, and where to find resources to do so. \nMike McCarthy is an artist\, musician\, writer\, filmmaker\, and Memphian by way of Tupelo\, Mississippi.  Mike released his first full-length film\, Damselvis\, Daughter of Helvis in 1994 and has been making films ever since.  Some of Mike’s films include Teenage Tupelo\, The Sore Losers\, Superstarlet A.D.\, and Cigarette Girl.  Mike is currently working with a non-profit TV station in Albany\, Mississippi\, called Hill Country Network to develop new programming. \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for filmmakers presented collaboratively by Crosstown Arts & Indie Memphis. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:30 pm | discussion at 7 pm
