SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Examining Video Art
DESCRIPTION:A Method to the Madness: Examining Video Art\nTraditionally Shoot & Splice has explored technique rooted in narrative\, documentary\, and commercial film and video production\, but this month we will examine the craft of capturing moving images solely to facilitate creative expression. \nJoin accomplished video artists Brian Pera\, Corkey Sinks & Jill Wissmiller for a discussion on the concepts\, production\, and showing of video art. \nBrian Pera‘s films include The Way I See Things\, Woman’s Picture\, and Only Child. The latter two are part of an ongoing series obsessively preoccupied with women he remembers from his childhood. With perfumer Andy Tauer he created a perfume line\, Tableau de Parfums\, the scents of which relate thematically and otherwise to the universe of the films. He’s the author of the novel Troublemaker and co-editor of Life As We Show It: Writings on Film. Currently he’s working on an installation piece called Sorry Not Sorry with Joel Parsons and Terri Phillips. \nCorkey Sinks (b. Dallas\, TX) is an artist based in Memphis\, TN.  Sinks works in a variety of media including sculpture\, textiles\, printed matter\, and video. She received a BA in Media Studies from the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands\, CA in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Sinks is the current artist in residence at Crosstown Arts. She has exhibited work throughout the United States and Mexico. In 2015\, her book\, Demon Baby Project: Events\, Coincidences\, and Repercussions was published by No Coast. Upcoming exhibitions include Artificial Tide\, a solo exhibition at The Packing Plant in Nashville\, TN and We gave Our Best\, Now the Rest is Up to the Hope Chest\, a group show at Im Ersten in Vienna\, Austria. \nJill Wissmiller is a Midwestern farmer’s daughter transplanted to the Midsouth\, where she is Chair of Design and Associate Professor of Digital Media at the Memphis College of Art. Wissmiller’s research and creative work is concerned with nontraditional cinema spectatorship and production. She has recently completed a motion picture manifesto that calls for a strict ban of standard definition video being projected upon anything other than glitter.  Her video work has been screened at a variety of venues both nationally and internationally\, including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery\, Palm Springs International Short Film Festival\, Moscow International Film Festival\, and Electrofringe New Media Arts Festival Australia. \n\nPresented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts  \nDOORS OPEN AT 6:30 PM | PANEL DISCUSSION BEGINS AT 7:00 PM | FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

SUMMARY:Belongings II: Repurposed
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, April 29\, 6-9 pm\n\n\nCall to Artists – February 2016\nBelongings II: Repurposed \nAn open call exhibition organized by Crosstown Arts and the Cleveland Street Flea Market \nThis second incarnation of the Belongings show continues in the spirit of community and the reuse and re-imagining of objects. All artists are invited to participate by purchasing any object of inspiration from the Cleveland Street Flea Market at 438 N Cleveland to transform into (or use as inspiration for) a new work of art. \nThe nostalgia and surprise felt when browsing at a flea market is a ripe field for artistic interpretation. A psychedelic print from the 70’s can inspire a color scheme or shape motif. A plastic bust of Scooby Doo can evoke early childhood Saturday mornings in front of the TV. A cover of an early genre pulp fiction paperback might be a poignant reminder of how prevalent attitudes have changed since the 1950’s. \nOne submission per artist will be accepted based on the guidelines below. All artists are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise or prior art experience. \nBelongings II: Repurposed will be on view at \nCrosstown Arts Gallery\, 422 N Cleveland\, April 29- May 14\, 2016 \n\nCall for Submissions\n1. Submit via Formstack \nClick here to submit \n2. Important Dates \nArtwork submission deadline/drop-off: Monday\, April 25\, 2-7 pm at Crosstown Arts at 422 N Cleveland \nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 29\, 6-9 pm \nGallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday\, April 29 – May 14\, 10 am – 6 pm \nArtwork pick-up: Sunday\, May 15\, 2-5 pm and Monday\, May 16\, 12-6 pm \n3. Fees\nThere is no fee to participate in the show other than the cost of purchasing an item from the Cleveland Street Flea Market to be incorporated into or used as inspiration for the artwork for the show. Prices of objects in the flea market are $1+ \n4. Size limit\nThere is no restriction on size of artwork other than reasonable passage through a standard doorway. \n5. Display requirements\nAll artwork must be delivered ready to hang/install to be included in the exhibition. Please communicate any specific installation needs (special handling\, pedestal needs\, AV equipment needs\, etc) by email to maryjo@crosstownarts.org before delivery. \n6.Sales\nCrosstown Arts will facilitate sales via cash\, check (made out to the artist) or Visa/MasterCard via square during the run of the show. More details to follow. \nContact: For more information please contact Mary Jo Karimnia at maryjo@crosstownarts.org or 901-626-6298

SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5-6 pm\nDiscussion 6-8 pm \nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback. \nOrganized by Crosstown Arts in partnership with ArtsMemphis ArtsAccelerator.

SUMMARY:Duets for Mellotron - Encore
DESCRIPTION:ENCORE PERFORMANCE ADDED: SUNDAY\, APRIL 17\, 7:30 PM \nCrosstown Arts is pleased to present Duets for Mellotron\, a live performance by Jonathan Kirkscey and Robby Grant\, organized in collaboration with Winston Eggleston. \nThis unique performance experience—the world’s first Mellotron duet—features an obscure but ingenious keyboard instrument invented in the 1940s which was designed to reproduce the sound of virtually any acoustic\, electromechanical\, or synthesized instrument. \nThe Mellotron is essentially a giant cassette tape player\, operated manually by pressing keys on a keyboard. When a key is struck\, a prerecorded sound is played/heard\, conceptually making the Mellotron an analog forerunner to digital sampling. \nThe M400 and a new M4000 cycling Mellotron\, from Winston Eggleston’s small but diverse Mellotron collection\, will be played at the performance. Eggleston will also share a series of new site-specific digital projections to complement the music. \nThe collaboration will result in a forthcoming limited-release vinyl recording of the performance and other duets for Mellotron composed by the artists. \nEvent tickets can be purchased in advance\, online for $30 (includes a copy of the record) or $15 (performance only). Capacity is limited. Performance location is Crosstown Arts at 422 N. Cleveland\, Memphis. A complimentary reception will take place prior to the performance. \n\nTICKETS \nDuets for Mellotron\nSaturday\, April 16\, 8 pm doors/8:30 pm show (45 mins)\nCrosstown Arts\, 422 N. Cleveland\nTickets: $15 / $30 with record\nSOLD OUT \n\nDuets for Mellotron Encore\nSunday\, April 17\, 7:30 pm doors/8 pm show (45 mins)\nCrosstown Arts\, 422 N. Cleveland\nTickets: $15 / $30 with record \n \n\n\n\nOrganized by Robby Grant\, Jonathan Kirkscey\, and Winston Eggleston \nMore about the Mellotron: \nThe Mellotron is essentially a giant cassette tape player\, operated manually by pressing keys on a keyboard. When a key is struck\, a prerecorded sound is played/heard\, conceptually making the Mellotron an analog forerunner to digital sampling. \nAn American engineer named Harry Chamberlin invented the precursor to the Mellotron in the late 1940s. While playing his Hammond organ\, he wondered if it would be possible to create a keyboard instrument that allowed the player to reproduce a wider range of orchestral and brass sounds. Over the course of many decades and through the hands of several manufacturers and marketers\, the Mellotron’s technology and appearance took many forms. \nWhile the individual instruments sampled for the Mellotron were recorded in the highest available fidelity for the time\, the wow and flutter of the tape playback mechanism\, as well as the ability to affect volume and speed through the relative amount of pressure applied to the keys all contribute to the instrument’s characteristic sound. \nThe iconic sound of the Mellotron has helped shape important moments in the history of modern music\, such as the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever\,” and work by The Moody Blues\, Pink Floyd\, Yes\, Genesis\, and Led Zeppelin\, to name a few. \nMore about the artists/organizers: \nJonathan Kirkscey and Robby Grant have been playing music together for over 10 years with the band Mouserocket. Jonathan also performs with Glorie\, String Theory\, the Memphis Symphony\, and recently scored the documentary “Best of Enemies.” Robby has performed at Crosstown previously with the experimental band\, >mancontrol<. He most recently recorded and released “Let the Little Things Go” under the Vending Machine moniker.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: The Director's Intuition
DESCRIPTION:Monthly filmmaking forum presented by Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts \nApril Program: The Director’s Intuition with Morgan Jon Fox \nMorgan Jon Fox (Feral\, This Is What Love In Action Looks Like\, OMG/HaHaHa) will lead a hands-on workshop garnered towards understanding\, fine-tuning and following one’s intuition as a director. We’ll ask the question of where our ideas come from\, and how we know if an idea is good or not. We’ll discuss when we need to listen to feedback or not\, when it’s a good idea to burn it all down following our dreams\, and when it’s best to lay a project to rest and move on. Through some simple audience-participation oriented exercises\, we’ll start to look at what makes humans tick and what lies at the core of great dramatic filmmaking. \nNamed on of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker Magazine\, Morgan Jon Fox is a Memphis-based filmmaker/producer who has directed 4 feature films (This Is What Love In Action Looks Like\, OMG/HaHaHa\, Blue Citrus Hearts) focussing primarily on gritty southern stories about characters on the fringe. Producing and AD’ing for other directors such as Craig Brewer\, Kentucker Audley\, and Tim Sutton\, Fox has become known for getting strong\, authentic performances from mostly non-professional characters. His latest project is Feral\, an 8 episode drama about a close-knit group of 20-something artists living in Memphis. Feral is due in 2016. \nDoors open at 6:30 PM; Panel discussion begins at 7:00 PM \nComplimentary food and beverages will be available \nFree & open to the public thanks to support by ArtsFirst: First Tennessee Foundation and ArtsMemphis.

SUMMARY:Visiting Writer Chris Offutt
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and the Booksellers at Laurelwood present critically-acclaimed fiction\, nonfiction\, and screen writer Chris Offutt\, as he reads from and signs his new memoir\, My Father\, the Pornographer (Atria Books). \nMemphis writer and publisher Eric Barnes joins in the conversation. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR:\nChris Offutt’s books include the story collections Kentucky Straight and Out of the Woods\, the novel The Good Brother\, and the memoirs The Same River Twice and No Heroes: A Memoir of Coming Home. His work has also appeared in The Best American Short Stories and The Best American Essays. In addition\, he has written extensively for television\, most notably for HBO’s True Blood and Treme and the Showtime series Weeds. His work has received awards from the Lannan Foundation\, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation\, the American Academy of Arts and Letters\,National Endowment for the Arts\, and Whiting Awards for both fiction and nonfiction. He lives near Oxford\, MS\, where he teaches in the MFA program at the University of Mississippi. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nWhen Andrew Offutt died\, his son\, Chris\, inherited a desk\, a rifle\, and eighteen hundred pounds of pornographic fiction. Andrew had been considered the “king of twentieth-century smut\,” with a writing career that began as a strategy to pay for his son’s orthodontic needs and soon took on a life of its own\, peaking during the 1970s when the commercial popularity of the erotic novel reached its height. \nOver the long summer of 2013\, Chris returned to his hometown to help his widowed mother move out of his childhood home. As he began to examine his father’s manuscripts and memorabilia\, journals\, and letters\, he realized he finally had an opportunity to gain insight into the difficult\, mercurial\, sometimes cruel man he’d loved and feared in equal measure. Only in his father’s absence could he truly make sense of the man and his legacy. \nWith his dutiful wife serving as typist\, Andrew wrote from their home in the Kentucky hills\, locked away in an office no one dared intrude upon. In this fashion he wrote more than four hundred novels\, including pirate porn\, ghost porn\, zombie porn\, and secret agent porn. The more he wrote\, the more intense his ambition became and the more difficult it was for his children to be part of his world. \nIn My Father\, the Pornographer\, Offutt takes us on the journey with him\, reading his father’s prodigious literary output as both a critic and as a son seeking answers. This is a book about the life of a working writer who supports his family solely by the output of his typewriter; it’s about the awful psychic burdens one generation unthinkingly passes along to the next; and it’s about growing up in the Appalachian hills with a pack of fearless boys riding bicycles through the woods\, happy and free. \nCRITICAL ACCLAIM:\n“My Father\, the Pornographer is contemporary memoir at its best. It achieves the rare miracle of re-creating the human heart on the page.” The Rumpus \n“One of the most sensitive\, nuanced examinations of father and son relationships I’ve read.” The Boston Globe \n“Chris Offutt owns one of the finest\, surest prose styles around\, ready and able to convey the hardest truth without flinching. Now Offutt enters the darkest and most mysterious of places—the cave of a monstrous enigma named Andrew J. Offutt—armed with nothing but his own restless curiosity. Spoiler alert: He makes it out alive\, walking into the daylight to bring us a deeper\, funnier\, more tender and more heartbroken truth—and his masterpiece.” Michael Chabon \n“Everything Chris Offutt writes is beautiful and brilliant\, but My Father\, the Pornographer is an astonishing house of mysteries\, and his most moving book yet. It’s about family and secrets and a literal ton of pornography\, but also\, fascinatingly\, what it means to make a writing life\, whether high art or pulp.” Elizabeth McCracken

SUMMARY:Maps & Legends Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 pm\, begins Feb. 18—lasts 6 weeks \nfree program for middle school students—max 15 participants \nled by critically-acclaimed writer Barry Wolverton\, author of Neversink and The Vanishing Island (Walden Pond Press/Harper Collins) \nto sign up\, please contact Nat Akin at nat@crosstownarts.org or 901-573-8444 \nOur creative-writing workshop for spring will take its inspiration from The Vanishing Island\, Barry’s first book in the series The Chronicles of the Black Tulip. We’ll discuss the importance of maps and mapmaking to imaginative storytelling\, and how maps shaped The Vanishing Island as well as other popular works of fantasy such as Harry Potter\, The Lord of the Rings\, and The Chronicles of Narnia. Participants will create maps to chart their own fantastical worlds and then write the legends to accompany them. This workshop will culminate in a book-release party of all the participants’ stories. \n

SUMMARY:Screenprinting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:tuesdays from 3 to 4:45 pm\, begins Feb. 16—lasts 6 weeks \nfree program for high school students—max 15 participants \nled by Memphis College of Arts graduate students Lindsey Mashburn and Kayla Selby \nto sign up\, please contact Nat Akin at nat@crosstownarts.org or 901-573-8444 \nThis workshop will be a once-a-week introduction to screen printing\, open to all levels of students. Screen printing has been used over the decades to create vibrant advertisements\, pop-culture art\, underground propaganda\, and so much more.  We will focus primarily on learning the basic techniques involved; focusing on a more traditional\, hands-on\, reduction approach. The class will show students how to create vibrant\, creative works of art\, and we will draw inspiration from our favorite books\, movies\, and plays.  Screen printing is an incredibly versatile artistic practice\, and over the course of this workshop students will gain the confidence and skills they need to create a wide range of new work.  If our schedule allows us the time\, we will also show the students how to create some fairly simple\, handmade paper books to show off their new prints. Materials will be provided\, come with a can-do attitude and be willing to get a little messy! This workshop will culminate in a public gallery show. \n
