Dame uses his visual arts background to bring additional texture to his overall aesthetic and live show production demanding rap music be respected as high art from the ghetto to the gallery. \n\n\nNegro Terror is the brainchild of Omar Higgins with the help of family and others. Before Omars untimely passing his wishes were for his family to keep it going (the band and other projects) if things take a turn for the worst. These exhibitions showcase the work of four dynamic artists whose practices explore themes of resilience\, memory\, identity\, and migration. Each exhibition offers a distinct yet interconnected perspective on the human experience\, inviting visitors to engage with visually striking and emotionally resonant works. \nFrom the Ashes – Maritza Dávila-Irizarry\nIn From the Ashes\, celebrated printmaker Maritza Dávila-Irizarry transforms personal tragedy into artistic expression. In April 2024\, a devastating fire destroyed her printmaking studio\, consuming decades of artwork\, tools\, and treasured books. But from this loss\, Dávila has created an exhibition that tells a story of endurance\, recovery\, and community support. \nFeaturing both new and salvaged works\, From the Ashes integrates printmaking\, mixed media\, photography\, video\, and remnants from the fire\, preserving a moment in time while looking forward to renewal. A longtime educator and mentor\, Dávila’s work is deeply rooted in ancestry\, cultural memory\, and personal history. Through layered compositions of symbols\, geometric structures\, and organic forms\, she explores themes of womanhood\, family\, and identity. \nHer career has spanned decades\, including 36 years of teaching at Memphis College of Art\, where she influenced generations of artists. This exhibition stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to creativity—an act of rebuilding not just her studio\, but the artistic connections that have defined her life’s work. \nSupernatural Telescope – Danielle Sierra\nWith Supernatural Telescope\, Danielle Sierra presents a deeply personal and poetic reflection on memory\, love\, and spirituality. Inspired by the passing of her father\, the exhibition explores the unseen ways in which love\, grief\, and imagination intertwine. Sierra’s work is an invitation to peer through a lens that transcends time\, where the past and present merge in moments of beauty and loss. \nThrough evocative paintings\, Sierra uses layered imagery and symbolic elements to capture the emotional weight of remembrance. Organic forms blend with architectural and cultural motifs\, reflecting the ways in which personal history and artistic vision shape our understanding of the world. \nSierra\, a native of Avenal\, California\, earned her MFA from the University of Memphis and has established herself as an artist whose work celebrates identity and heritage. She has contributed to significant mural projects in Memphis and Philadelphia\, honoring diverse communities through large-scale public art. Supernatural Telescope continues her exploration of storytelling through visual expression\, offering viewers a glimpse into the delicate interplay between love\, legacy\, and faith. \nThe Colors of the Caribbean – Juan Roberto Murat Salas\nA celebration of culture and heritage\, The Colors of the Caribbean by Juan Roberto Murat Salas transports viewers into the vibrant landscapes of the Caribbean. Murat Salas\, a Cuban-born painter trained at the prestigious San Alejandro Academy of Arts in Havana\, brings the rich visual traditions of his homeland to life through bold colors and dynamic compositions. \nHis work incorporates themes of deities\, architecture\, dance\, flora\, and fauna\, drawing on centuries of artistic influence while infusing each piece with his personal vision. The exhibition pays tribute to the great masters of Cuban art\, including Wilfredo Lam\, Amelia Peláez\, and René Portocarrero\, while asserting a contemporary voice that speaks to both tradition and modernity. \nBeyond its celebration of artistic heritage\, The Colors of the Caribbean also reflects the challenges faced by artists from the Global South. For Murat Salas\, like many Cuban artists before him\, exile has played a role in shaping his creative journey. This exhibition marks his first major show in the United States\, providing an opportunity to share his vision with a broader audience and bring the energy and resilience of Caribbean art to Memphis. \nA Journey into the Shadows – Nelson Gutierrez\nIn A Journey into the Shadows\, Colombian-born artist Nelson Gutierrez confronts the realities of migration and displacement through a striking visual language of shadow and movement. Using three-dimensional cutout drawings illuminated by shifting projections\, his work creates an immersive experience that reflects the instability and uncertainty faced by those seeking a brighter future. \nThe figures in Gutierrez’s work appear to walk endlessly\, their forms dissolving into shifting masses of shadow. This interplay between light and darkness serves as a metaphor for the invisible struggles of displaced people—those whose identities blur as they move between places\, often unseen and unheard. His process involves hand-drawn figures that are laser-cut into sculptural forms\, which are then manipulated through projected light to create a constantly evolving visual landscape. \nGutierrez\, who holds an MFA from Chelsea College of Art in London\, has exhibited internationally\, with works that address sociopolitical themes through conceptual and multidisciplinary approaches. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Strictly Jazz: The Music of Michael Brecker \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFebruary 15\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMichael Brecker was a highly influential American jazz saxophonist and composer. He was known for his technical brilliance\, soulful playing\, and ability to seamlessly blend jazz and pop elements. Brecker’s contributions to both jazz and pop music have solidified his place as one of the most important musicians of his generation and one of\, if not the most important\, saxophonists post-John Coltrane that the world has ever known. \nPaying homage to Brecker for one night only is a group led by internationally recognized saxophonist Adam Larson\, who was first inspired to pursue a career in saxophone after hearing a Brecker solo while on the way to a travel basketball game. Says Larson: “I asked my dad what instrument was soloing\, and I could not believe that it was a saxophone! I remember telling my dad that I don’t know if I’d ever get to that level\, but I wanted to try”. Such was the impetus that jumpstarted the career of Larson\, who at age 35 has recorded on dozens of albums\, releasing ten under his own name. Frequently touring the country\, Larson is excited to return to the Green Room with a stellar band that includes Grammy-Award-winning bassist and frequent Larson collaborator Clark Sommers as well as local stalwarts pianist Alvie Givhan and drummer James Sexton. \nAsked about the musical selections for the February 15th outing\, Larson says he will pull from some of his favorite Brecker recordings with special consideration to Brecker’s album “The Nearness of You: The Ballad Book”\, timely for the Valentine’s Day holiday.

They currently reside in Phoenix\, Arizona\, where they maintain active careers as performers\, educators\, and Artistic Directors.\n\n\n\nNyaho/Garcia Duo: Susanna Garcia and William Chapman Nyaho met during doctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin during the 1980s. Their formation as a duo represented not only their respect for each other’s musicianship but their sharing of a similar musical philosophy bringing the excitement and joy of music for two pianos to a wider audience.

In orchestral settings\, Gabriela has played with orchestras across Brazil and the U.S. and her chamber music experience includes collaborations with numerous ensembles like Camerata Fukuda\, the Abraham Franck String Quartet\, and the Burgin String Quartet\, as well as the FogoNuevo violin and viola duo. Deeply committed to music education\, Gabriela is a trained Suzuki teacher under the guidance of Susan Kempter at the University of New Mexico. \nGabriela has taught private and group lessons\, coached youth orchestras in Brazil and the U.S.\, and was a Suzuki Group class coordinator at the University of New Mexico string lab school. Gabriela holds a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from Faculdade Cantareira in São Paulo\, Brazil\, and a master’s degree in violin performance and string pedagogy from the University of New Mexico\, where she was a teaching assistant. She received her Doctor of Music degree in violin performance at Florida State University as a graduate teaching assistant to Dr. Shannon Thomas.\nRoberta dos Santos is an avid chamber musician and advocate for contemporary music. A Brazilian cellist\, Roberta collaborates with some of the most diverse and renowned composers to elevate underrepresented voices in the music scene\, both in Brazil and internationally. Roberta continues to influence the next generation of musicians through collaborations with the Memphis Youth Symphony Program\, PRIZM Ensemble\, and Iris Collective as an Iris Artist Fellow\, while also maintaining a private studio in the U.S. and Brazil. \nRoberta is a doctoral candidate in cello performance at the University of Memphis\, where she also serves as a teaching assistant. DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents “The Films of Stan Brakhage” with an original live score by Cloudland Canyon at the Crosstown Theater on Thursday\, March 6\, at 7:00 pm.\n\n\n\n \nStan Brakhaage\, a wildly prolific experimental filmmaker in American avant-garde cinema and one of cinema’s principle architects of cinematic modernism\, made nearly 400 films and eight books of film criticism and theory between 1952-2003. Dozens of his films\, including “Anticipation of the Night\,” “Mothlight\,” “Dog Star Man\,” and “Scenes from Under Childhood” are acknowledged masterworks. The techniques he pioneered \, most notably rapid editing\, handheld camera\, lens flares and physical manipulation of the filmstrip\, came to define experimental cinema\, but they were also absorbed by advertising\, music videos\, and Hollywood.\nChallenging all taboos in his exploration of birth\, sex\, death\, and the search for God\,” he turned his camera on explicit lovemaking\, childbirth\, even autopsy. Many of his most famous works pursue the nature of vision itself and transcend the act of filming. His films seek to change the way we see. They encourage viewers to abandon traditional structure in favor of pure visual perception that is not reliant on naming what is seen. His goal was to create a more visceral  visual experience. He believed that “a stream of visual consciousness could be nothing less than the pathway of the soul.” His films are shot in highly sensual colors and utilize minimal soundtracks. \n \nCloudland Canyon  is an experimental rock/psychedelic rock band formed in 2002 by Kip Uhlhorn and Simon Wojan. Cloudland Canyon has released several critically acclaimed albums include Fin Eaves\, Lie in Light\, and An Arabesque. Their recent releases have been produced by Sonic Boom from Spacemen3/Spectrum. With each release\, Uhlhorn has pushed the envelope of experimental pop music\, collaborating with various musicians and producers to create intricate and other wordly compositions .Cloudland Canyon is a must-listen for anyone interested in the possibilities of experimental music in the 21 century. New members joining Uhlhorn in the band include Corbin Linebarier of General Labor\, Graham Burks of Loose Opinions\, and Alex Greene of Alex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra.

One performance comprising a set each from Immersion & SUSS followed by a collaborative set. \n\n\nNanocluster is the extension of Colin and Malka’s relationship\, friendships and commitment to art and ideas. They initially met when Colin produced Malka’s band in 1985. The collaboration started there. They then became a couple and created their own projects\, like the instrumental electronic duo Immersion\, in 1994. \n\nThe songs had been written and rehearsed prior to each performance. Built around Thor Harris\, the charismatic percussion player from Swans and many other projects\, and Cubzoa (Jack Wolter from the band Penelope Isles).  \nKey to the process is Colin and Malka’s radio show for Slack City radio\, Swimming In Sound with its entertainingly diverse playlist that has widened their horizons. It’s also helped build relationships not only with these collaborators but also musicians like the ambient country masters SUSS\, with whom they have produced Nanocluster Vol.3 which will be released in mid February 2025 followed by extended Nanocluster tour in the USA.  \nMalka: “Nanocluster is collaboration but in a very specific form. We don’t have rules. It’s a series of creative snapshots.” \nColin: “It’s chemistry & music. Malka & I operate as a team and now we’ve taken it to another level.” \nNanocluster is a 21st century collusion of shared ideas\, creating a momentary extended musical family. It’s about musical and personal relationships and the meeting place in the middle. A temporary band of house guests. SUSS just moved\, in ideas merged and new soundscapes were forged. This is the place where Immersion happens.

A testament to black girlhood is a choreopoem by Bria B Saulsberry\, produced by Homegrown Arts. This magnetic story explores the journey of a black girl discovering the dance of adolescent learning—remembering what has been taught\, forgetting what has been passed down\, and becoming who is needed. The experience combines poetry\, dance\, and music\, celebrating the tradition of dance.\n\n\n\nBria Saulsberry is a poet and youth arts advocate from Memphis. She helps local programs to support Memphis youth in creative writing and performance. In 2019\, she co-founded Homegrown Arts and serves as the Director of Education and Youth Development at the Soulsville Foundation.\n\n\n\nJasmine Settles is a writer and director. She studied at Henderson State University and the University of Memphis. In 2019\, she won the Berry Hannah Prize. Jasmine owns Cafe Noir\, an online bookstore\, and founded the Literature is Liberating Foundation. She performs on many stages in Memphis.\n\n\n\nAkina Morrow is a Memphis native and graduated from the University of Tennessee. She works as a Business Specialist for ALSAC/St. Jude and is the Managing Director at HomeGrown Arts. She directed “For Colored Girls” at Evergreen Theater and serves on the media team for her local church. Akina is also a board member for Perfecting Gifts\, Inc.

A highly skilled multi-instrumentalist\, Paul has worked as a drummer\, bassist\, and guitarist with artists such as Ann Peebles\, Reba Russell\, The PRVLG\, Hope Clayburn\, Mighty Souls Brass Band\, Eric Gales\, Shawn Lane\, Amy LaVere\, Jim Dickinson\, MEM_MODS\, Sons of Mudboy\, Loveland/Duren\, Chuck Prophet\, Robert Ellis\, and many more. In addition to his work as a sideman\, Paul has released three solo records under his own name and three more under his pseudonym\, New Memphis Colorways. \n\n\nHe returns to the Crosstown Arts Green Room for a special 10-year anniversary performance of music from his critically acclaimed EP\, The Old Forest Trail. The EP serves as both an homage to the Old Forest Arboretum in Overton Park and a tribute to his father\, Pat Taylor\, who passed away in 2015. The concert will also include new music he has written since 2020\, when he embarked on a new chapter in Door County\, Wisconsin\, a move that has inspired fresh creative work.

DESCRIPTION:Two down on their luck jazz musicians find themselves out of a job and on the run after the police raid the speakeasy they perform in and they inadvertently stumble upon a gang war. With no money and nowhere to hide\, a gig with Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopators at a Florida beach resort seems like the perfect getaway. There’s just one problem: the Syncopators are an all-female band\, and Joe and Jerry aren’t women – yet. \nArmed with some dodgy wigs and wobbly falsettos\, Joe and Jerry manage to join the Syncopators\, where they meet Sugar Kane: a hooch-swilling\, ukulele-playing knockout with a soft spot for bad boy saxophone players. Barely able to believe their good fortune\, things start to go off the rails for the pair when they begin to attract unwanted attention from lecherous millionaires and some familiar faces show up at their hotel for a gathering of the country’s most dangerous criminals. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival\, and the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players\, igniting a passion for jazz.\n\nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a matchless interpreter of song. She performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself\, and her version of “Marry Me a Little”\, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award.\nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned.
