DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception for “The Earthworm and the Hawk” by Melissa Dunn in the Galleries at Crosstown Arts. \nThe Galleries at Crosstown Arts\, East Atrium\nFriday\, February 9\, 2024\nTime: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe Earthworm and the Hawk is the overlap between two states of being. \nIn the private and non-verbal world of Melissa Dunn’s sketchbook\, she burrows deep\, generating drawings intuitively from her imagination. As the pages fill up\, she steps back and shifts perspective\, becoming more objective. The lay of the land comes into sharp focus. Here she maps out\, poses questions\, and acts decisively. \nBecause these modalities are distinct from one another\, it takes time and patience to figure out ways of unifying them. Their push/pull tendencies can disrupt as much as facilitate. It’s a continual process. Like two rocks rubbed together just the right way\, the friction between the searcher and the strategist can generate sparks or a full blown explosion. \n\nMelissa Dunn is from Memphis\, Tennessee. She spent her early years immersed in the city’s music scene\, splitting her time between playing with bands and making visual art. Although she still plays guitar and sings\, today music is mostly an inward-facing part of her studio life\, with an audience of sketchbooks\, drawings\, and paintings\, which she refers to as her “highly energized objects.”

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception for “Iliumpta” by Michael “Birdcap” Roy in the Galleries at Crosstown Arts. \nThe Galleries at Crosstown Arts\, East Atrium\nFriday\, February 9\, 2024\nTime: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nIliumpta is a retelling of Homer’s Iliad set in the Southernmost bayous of Mississippi. Named after the county the story takes place in\, Iliumpta draws comparisons between masculinity in the American South and the sandaled heroes of yore\, often pointing out the weakness in a regional outlook that insists on staying put during hurricanes. \nDirectly\, this work is about Southern fatalism and its effects on masculinity. Fatalism makes an outlook so despairing that stoicism may masquerade as heroism. The men in these works shout from a nihilistic void\, and in their attempts to be heroic\, they\, like the ancients before them\, choose death over happiness\, a closed ear before sound advice\, and doom before an apology. \nMichael Roy\, a.k.a. Birdcap\, grew up near the bayous of Southern Mississippi\, a region battered by hurricanes and scarred by a violent history. In the past decade\, Birdcap’s career as a muralist has spanned continents\, but the artist’s work is a product of the South\, both a love letter to the region he calls home and a challenge to its problems.

Kevin has directed films that capture the essence of the Black experience\, earning him the prestigious Memphis Film Prize Award in 2018 and 2019. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Dan Wilson and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, February 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n \n\n\n\nGrowing up in Akron\, Ohio\, Dan Wilson spent the majority of his youth within the church community\, where his musical path began. \n\n\n\nTraces of his major guitar influences – including Wes Montgomery\, Charlie Christian\, Joe Pass\, and George Benson to name a few – can be discerned through his playing\, but his musical identity has been shaped by everything from gospel and blues to traditional jazz\, hip-hop and horn players like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson. \n\n\n\nWilson has had the honor of sharing the stage with jazz greats including Eric Marienthal\, Russell Malone\, Les McCann\, René Marie\, Jeff Hamilton\, David Sanborn and Dave Stryker. He also teaches jazz guitar and music theory through private lessons. \n\n\n\nWilson’s career took him on an exploratory journey into foundations laid down by the guitar/organ tradition\, eventually leading to an invitation to perform with jazz great Joey DeFrancesco’s trio quartet\, with which Wilson went on to earn a GRAMMY® Award nomination with for DeFrancesco’s Project Freedom album (Mack Avenue Records\, 2017).

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents The City of Tomorrow in The Green Room.  \n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, February 3\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\n\nTickets: $15 | $5 student tickets available \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nFeaturing the premiere of a brand-new work for wind quintet by George Lewis\, commissioned by the ensemble\, the City of Tomorrow sets the audience inside a kaleidoscope of culture and memory. Composer\, musicologist\, and winner of MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships\, George Lewis is currently the Artistic Director of the International Contemporary Ensemble and has written extensively on American experimental music\, race\, and the decolonization of contemporary music. His music is presented alongside another masterpiece for the modern quintet\, De Memorias by Cuban-American composer Tania León. The City of Tomorrow’s specialty is creating immersive experiences\, in which audiences are carried from one piece to the next in a transformative musical art installation. \nThe City of Tomorrow is an experimental wind quintet with a fearless aesthetic and a commitment to 21st-century music. Their U.S. tours have included concerts at Trinity Wall Street\, Spectrum\, and IN\TER/SECT\, (co-presented by Bryant Park and Chamber Music America) as well as the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago\, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Michigan\, and Red Note New Music Festival in Illinois. The quintet’s work has been supported by residencies at the Banff Center for the Arts & Creativity and the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. \nTheir 2021 release Blow on New Focus Recordings (FCR294) features music by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Franco Donatoni\, and the world premiere recording of a work by Han Lash\, which was supported by a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant. The City of Tomorrow’s first album\, Nature\, released on PARMA/Ravello in 2014\, wrestled with questions of human involvement in the natural world and included music by David Lang\, Luciano Berio\, Nat Evans\, and Denys Bouliane. \nIn 2015\, the quintet began exploring physical movement and spatial relationships in their concert programming. Collaborating with lighting designer Alex Deahl\, the quintet has experimented with an ensemble-controlled lighting setup and choreography to create a seamless and immersive musical experience. \nThe City of Tomorrow’s members are based in New York\, Boston\, Baton Rouge\, and Memphis and are in demand as new music specialists\, curators\, collaborators\, and teachers. As an ensemble\, they have been in residence at Vermont College of Fine Arts\, Berklee College of Music\, Indiana University\, Tufts\, and Yale. He played in local clubs from his early teenage years\, and studied at the Jazzmobile workshops with Frank Wess\, Charles Davis\, and Frank Foster. He also met Branford Marsalis\, who convinced him to study with Alvin Batiste at Southern University in Louisiana. \n  \n\n\n\nSoon after this\, Anderson began touring with the Wynton Marsalis Septet\, and collaborated with Marsalis through the middle of the 1990s. He continued to play with Marsalis’s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra beyond this. In 1994\, he released his debut album on Atlantic Records; pianist Eric Reed and bassist Ben Wolfe were among those who played as sidemen. His 1998 album Live at the Village Vanguard featured trumpeter Irvin Mayfield\, bassist Steve Kirby\, pianist Xavier Davis\, and drummer Jaz Sawyer.\n\n

Over two dozen musicians will join together to explore diverse choral repertoire while highlighting works from the Black vocal tradition: gospel\, spirituals\, and anthems.\n\n\n\nHailed by The New York Times as a “virtuoso pianist” and “steeped in Black Classical\,” the program is curated by series director Dr. Artina McCain\, a professor of piano at the University of Memphis. The concert will be led by two-time Grammy-nominated educator and University of Memphis director of choral activities\, Dr. Francis Cathlina\, and Grammy-nominated conductor-baritone and director of the New York Philharmonic Chorus\, Malcolm J. The short films begin abstract and end explicitly political. Some of them engage with and subvert the stories of Philippine mythological creatures. For instance\, Dikit\, queers and twists the tradition of the manananggal\, a vampire-like creature that is able to separate its torso from its lower body\, through an innovative use of split screen. Together they cry out for someone\, something\, and somewhere different. \nContent Warning: This program includes depictions of violence and references to state and domestic violence and their long-lasting effects.

Kortland is an intriguing\, bold performer\, whose repertoire includes original compositions and covers of classic jazz\, soul\, and R&B tunes. Kortland\, the product of an age of popular and gospel music\, is a storyteller\, blessed with the power to marshal all at once a batch of skills that includes timing\, phrasing\, pronunciation and acting ability to make the listener feel myriad emotions\, particularly on ballads. Spend an evening with Kortland\, where he shares his life\, his story\, and his voice. \nKortland Whalum is a singer-songwriter and actor whose talents span from music\, theater\, and now the screen. A graduate of Morehouse College\, Kortland’s most recent theater credits include The Color Purple (2023) and Father Comes Home from the Wars: Parts 1\,2\,&3 (2023). Other theater credits include The Wiz (2016)\, AIDA (2017)\, Raisin (2018)\,  Ain’t Mis Behavin‘ in Milan\, Italy (2019)\, CATS (2019)\, May We All (2022)\, Porgy & Bess (2022)\, and the leading role of Sky Masterson in Guys & Dolls (2022). Upcoming theater credits include Beautiful: The Carole King Story (2024) at Theatre Memphis. Kortland’s on screen features include BET’s CURVES (2021) as well as the upcoming Freedom’s Village (2024). \nWith sold out shows at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts in 2020 and 2022\, Kortland continues to seek a unique niche in the world of soft jazz and R&B/soul music. Kortland released his EP A Love Letter; a collection of songs including\, “Can We Go (Love’s Paradise)”\, “C’est La Vie”\, and “The Limit”; all of which have garnered favorable local radio play on various stations.
