The exhibitions bring together three distinct artistic practices that explore themes of heritage\, perception\, identity\, and humanity’s relationship with the wider world. \nOn view through June 7\, 2026\, the exhibitions highlight artists working across painting\, drawing\, animation\, installation\, and multimedia forms\, each approaching the act of representation from a unique perspective. \n\nShades of Heritage — Wiley Henry\nIn Shades of Heritage\, Wiley Henry presents a selection of paintings and drawings centered on the human figure and the formative influence of personal history. Through traditional realist techniques\, Henry explores how heritage shapes identity and artistic expression. \nThe exhibition reflects Henry’s belief that his work emerges directly from the experiences that shaped him. As the artist explains\, the works collectively “reflect my identity\, artistic perspective\, and creative approach\,” emphasizing the role heritage plays in both subject and meaning. \nHenry’s fascination with the human form allows him to depict figures with ease and emotional immediacy. He describes this connection as inseparable from his upbringing and the environment that formed him: “I am who I am because of my heritage.” \nAlthough the exhibition is not explicitly religious\, Henry notes that spiritual themes often surface within his work. In several pieces he depicts gatherings of Black angels and children in celestial settings\, continuing a long tradition of artists who have portrayed angelic figures throughout history. \nHenry is a Memphis-born artist whose work has been widely reproduced and commissioned for portraits of prominent individuals\, including judges\, actors\, politicians\, and community leaders. A graduate of the Memphis College of Art\, he has built a career rooted in traditional realism and a distinctive ability to capture what he describes as the “essence of the human spirit.” \n\nA Rabbit With a Gun — Lawrence Matthews\nLawrence Matthews’ A Rabbit With a Gun explores the unsettling feeling that reality itself may be unstable. The exhibition grew out of the artist’s immersion in media and ideas about altered perception and the uncanny nature of everyday life. \nMatthews describes his recent years as a period spent grappling with the feeling that something about existence feels “off”—that space\, time\, and social interactions sometimes behave in strange or unpredictable ways. “People are confusing\,” he writes. “Time moves in ways which it shouldn’t. Months zoom past in hours.” \nIn this body of work\, Matthews imagines what might happen if one actively pushes against those familiar routines and expectations. He describes venturing “further and further into spaces off the path—in the world\, in my past and in my own head.” The works become attempts to share those moments when perception shifts and the boundaries of reality feel fluid. \nBorn and raised in a neighborhood between the Mississippi border\, Memphis city limits\, and the surrounding suburbs\, Matthews’ life experience informs a sensibility closely aligned with Southern Gothic traditions. His work draws from the emotional tension of those environments—places both overlooked and deeply personal. \nMatthews holds a BFA from the University of Memphis and has spent more than a decade exhibiting\, performing\, and collaborating with arts organizations. His multidisciplinary practice blends visual art\, performance\, and narrative into works that reflect the intertwined experiences of memory\, place\, and identity. \n\nClub Walrus\, Fluvial Effluvia\, and Know No Now — Karl Erickson\nKarl Erickson’s exhibition combines digital animation\, installation\, and audio-visual experimentation to explore a world in which humans are only one of many active participants. His work asks viewers to consider the agency of the “other-than-human” entities that share the planet with us. \nFor Erickson\, this includes plants\, animals\, machines\, trash\, electricity\, and the microscopic systems that underpin life itself. The complex tools he uses—such as photogrammetry\, modular synthesizers\, and 3D animation—mirror the complexity of ecological systems. \nWithin these animated environments\, meaning becomes unstable and identities shift. Erickson intentionally disrupts conventional structures of logic and interpretation\, allowing nonsense\, humor\, and absurdity to proliferate. This approach challenges what he describes as the “authoritative\, single-minded way of understanding the world” that privileges strict rational order above all else. \nMany of Erickson’s digital puppets are built from discarded materials\, emphasizing the interconnected assemblage of things that make up the world. By animating these objects and giving them uncanny life\, he invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with the physical environment. \nErickson’s work has been presented widely in galleries\, museums\, film festivals\, and performance spaces. His animation Know No Now has screened internationally and received the Best Animation award at the Chroma Art Film Festival in Miami. \n\nOn View at Crosstown Arts\nTogether\, these three exhibitions offer distinct but complementary perspectives on the human experience—from the shaping power of heritage\, to the instability of perception\, to the broader networks of life and matter that surround us. \nThe exhibitions remain on view at Crosstown Arts in Memphis through June 7\, 2026.

Fast forward a few years and two additional members later\, and they have opened for Jake Shimabukuro\, released two albums\, played acclaimed festivals such as Folk Alliance and Americana Fest\, and headlined Kauai Farm Bureau County Fair on Kauai\, Hawaii. They’ve been featured on PBS on Sun Studio Sessions\, DittyTV\, Music City Roots and NPR’s internationally syndicated Beale Street Caravan. \nMemphis is known as the birthplace of many musical styles\, and the Memphis Ukulele Band is firmly in that rich\, diverse tradition\, playing everything from rockabilly to the blues\, pop to Gospel.. \nIn both live performances and on their recordings\, Memphis Ukulele Band’s covers and originals exude pure fun while exploring the genre-bending range of the ukulele. \nIn 2026 they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their eponymous debut album on Bluebarrel Records.

He is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Oregon. As a headliner for major international festivals and venues\, he also performs with the award-winning New West Guitars. \nJohn’s current tours include Melissa Manchester\, Ann Hampton Callaway\, Sarah McKenzie\, and his own quartet. \nIn 2017\, John recorded on Gwen Stefani’s album You Make it Feel Like Christmas which topped the Billboard charts at #1 holiday album. In 2018\, the reissue of the same album\, also topped the Billboard holiday charts\, as well as placed for ads such as Starbucks and Target\, and in 2024 the single You Make it Feel Like Christmas went RIAA Platinum. \nFrom 2012-2025 John was a member of Jeff Goldblum’s Mildred Snitzer Orchestra performing globally and with guest artists such as Miley Cyrus\, Inara George\, Gregory Porter\, Sharon Van Etten\, Sarah Silverman\, and others. The performance looks back on the miles covered while touring on the tailwinds of 2022’s With Love\, Alexis Jade. The intervening years have brought many hallmarks of life lived out of a suitcase: borrowed couches\, shared meals\, porch sitting sessions\, and often\, as the title song suggests\, “miles and miles of heartache.” A homecoming in multiple regards\, the show will open with a performance from Nashville-based singer-songwriter Sierra Bryan\, who was on tour with Jade at the time many of these previously-unreleased songs came knocking. \nIn a recreation of the Gemstones’ own respective living spaces\, the stage will be adorned with furniture\, pictures\, family heirlooms\, and other mementos that mean home to them. This evening is a celebration of the way artists build home together\, paying homage to the importance of community and collaborative place-making that guides Jade’s creative output as an artist in perpetual motion. \nAlexis will be joined by her musical collaborators who continue to make “home” a moveable feast: Sam Long on bass\, Matt Gaines on pedal steel/keys\, Jon Gaines and drums\, Josh Green on guitar\, and Carter Wenger on guitar.

His mature compositional gift and gripping interpretive finesse are vividly represented on his 2022 release Universos and his 2020 outing with Argentine multi-instrumentalist and composer Carlos “Negro” Aguirre titled En el jardín. He is a member of the John Patitucci Trio (heard on the acclaimed album Irmãos de Fé)\, has toured extensively with legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins\, and played with characteristic fire and taste on Monty Alexander’s GRAMMY-nominated Harlem-Kingston Express Live! as well as David Sanborn & Marcus Miller’s Time and the River. He has worked in bands with some of the greatest figures in jazz including George Coleman\, Charles McPherson\, Jimmy Heath\, James Moody and Roy Hargrove\, and has toured with his own groups all over the world in the most prestigious festivals and venues including the Tokyo\, Umbria and North Sea Jazz Festivals as well as Kennedy Center\, Jazz at Lincoln Center and more. \nBorn in Tel Aviv and based in New York\, Yotam was discovered at a young age by the great James Moody. He has evolved into a highly influential artist of his day\, hailed by JazzTimes for a musical output “struck through with passion and intimacy\,” and by The New York Times as a player who “improvises in a cutting tone and writes heady original tunes that seem to tug the straight-ahead jazz tradition in new directions.” Fueled by a deep love of the jazz lineage and a joyful immersion in choro\, samba\, frevo\, tango and other idioms\, he approaches his wide-ranging influences with a near-anthropological meticulousness\, conveying a sense not just of technical knowledge but also rich lived experience.

Farmer — a Big Legal Mess and Music Maker Foundation artist from Duck Hill\, MS — focuses on Delta- and Memphis-style blues while Crosby performs the stomping North Mississippi and the haunting Bentonia\, MS blues. (Skip James is from Bentonia\, MS.) The Memphis Flyer terms Farmer‘s last recording a “great album.” Though Crosby is a yankee\, he has spent considerable time in Memphis and Mississippi and is mentored by GRAMMY Award nominee and juke joint proprietor Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. \n\n\nWillie Farmer is living proof that Mississippi continues to produce deep blues. The 65-year-old guitarist is neither a soul modernist nor a revivalist\, but a small-town auto mechanic who’s never shaken his love for old-school legends like Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. \nA lifelong resident of tiny Duck Hill\, located in the hills east of the Delta\, Farmer grew up on his family’s farm. He picked up the acoustic guitar in his early teens\, and after saving money from picking cotton\, he bought his first electric instrument. He began performing at school events and local gatherings\, learning blues and R&B by tuning into a powerful Nashville radio station. \nIn his early twenties\, he joined a loose-knit band that played juke joints around the area\, including Duck Hill\, Grenada\, Kilmichael\, and deep into the Delta in Greenwood and Charleston. But he eventually grew weary of the rowdy club scene\, where “people liked to fight like crazy.” \nIn 2003\, Farmer helped found the Grassroots Blues Festival\, held in a meadow outside Duck Hill. The annual event connected him with downhome blues artists from across Mississippi\, including Willie King and Leo Welch. \nFarmer’s first serious studio effort came with “The Man From the Hill” (2019\, Big Legal Mess)\, recorded over several sessions at Bruce Watson’s Memphis-based Delta-Sonic Sound. Working in a North Mississippi Hill Country vein\, the album features Jimbo Mathus and drummer George Sluppick\, with Farmer also exploring gospel harmonies alongside Memphis’ Barnes Brothers. \nFor the past thirty years\, he’s operated his own auto repair shop\, but he hopes the success of the album and touring opportunities will let him finally step away from the garage. The Memphis Flyer called the record a “great album\,” highlighting his playing as full of “rough-hewn strength and deep sensitivity\,” while Relix Magazine noted that it “showcases Farmer’s gritty blues approach as he honors longtime influences like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Howlin’ Wolf.” \nIn his upcoming album At the Blue Front\, Ryan Lee Crosby channels the ethereal sounds of Bentonia\, Mississippi\, through a live field recording captured at the legendary Blue Front Café\, the oldest active juke joint in the U.S. In the spirit of folklorists like Alan Lomax and David Evans\, the album was recorded on reel-to-reel tape at the historic venue owned by Grammy-nominated bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes. \nSupported by Holmes\, Grant Smith on calabash\, and Jay Scheffler on harmonica\, Crosby delivers eight tracks that honor Bentonia and North Mississippi blues traditions while reflecting his own distinctive voice. The album\, rich with spontaneously composed performances\, centers on Crosby’s electric 12-string guitar\, played in both standard and “crossnote” tunings. \nCrosby’s journey into Bentonia blues began in 2012 after discovering the early recordings of Skip James. He started formal studies with Holmes in 2019\, but his influences also include Jack Owens\, Cornelius Bright\, and Robert Belfour\, Jessie Mae Hemphill\, and RL Boyce—the latter two of whom he has performed and recorded with. \nDubbed “a young torchbearer of the style” by Smithsonian Magazine\, Crosby blends deep tradition with personal mysticism. Louis Hayes\, a native of Conerway’s hometown Detroit\, Michigan; and one of the first people he called when he moved to New York. His contributions to music are vast\, however many may not be aware that they have heard him. His early work was with Horace Silver\, he played on several of Cannonball Adderly’s most important works\, he was a co-leader with Woody Shaw and has been consistent as a full-fledged bandleader\, serving as a mentor to many in the generations to follow his own. Hayes is a living link to those who have passed and carries the torch even now\, for “this wonderful artform\,” as he calls his music. Mr. Hayes is thrilled to have learned of this performance\, and we look forward to giving him his flowers as we tell his story through song. \nHenry Conerway III has become a leading presence on the modern jazz scene since moving to New York City in 2015\, collaborating with renowned artists including Freddy Cole\, Marcus Printup of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Jazzmeia Horn\, and Grammy-nominated trumpeter Russell Gunn\, while also participating in residencies with Jazz at Lincoln Center in Doha. A proud native of Detroit\, Conerway began performing at the Detroit Jazz Festival while still in high school and studied under legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Jazz Orchestra. A graduate of Morehouse College with a degree in Music Composition\, he co-founded the Atlanta-based ensemble Jaspects\, which became a staple of the city’s music scene and collaborated with artists including PJ Morton\, Janelle Monáe\, Tony Hightower\, and Chantae Cann. His career has taken him to major festivals and venues such as the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, Toronto Jazz Festival\, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, as well as iconic New York jazz clubs including Birdland Jazz Club\, Smalls Jazz Club\, Smoke Jazz & Supper Club\, and Minton’s Playhouse. In addition to his work as a performer\, Conerway has composed music for film and appeared in theatrical productions including the Tony-nominated Broadway show Shuffle Along\, or\, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.

Some listeners have described Sean’s improvisations as “sound acupuncture” and “a cell-altering shamanic journey.” \nThe concert lasts approximately 90 minutes. There will be traditional concert seating as well as an area to lie down and spread out. If you’re so inclined\, you are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, blankets\, pillows\, or anything else you need for your comfort. The more comfortable you are\, the deeper the experience. \nSEAN MURPHY \nSean Murphy is a multidisciplinary artist with over 30 years of professional experience. He is a musician\, ethnomusicologist\, instrument maker\, sound healer\, teaching artist\, nature lover\, listener\, explorer… Sean holds a degree in music history with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology from the University of Memphis. He was trained to play western classical and jazz tuba; but his fascination with world cultures and music has led him to play and make innumerable instruments. Early in his career\, he began performing as a solo improvisation musician accompanying dance and yoga which eventually led him to the practice of sound healing. Sean and his wife\, Anne J. Froning\, have led workshops in restorative yoga\, sound healing\, & meditative movement with music throughout the United States. As a performing and recording musician\, Sean is equally at home working in classical to hip hop\, world to ambient\, jazz to hard rock\, new age to jazz. He is the leader of the Mighty Souls Brass Band as well as regularly playing as a sideman with many jazz groups while also regularly performing improvised music for dance\, healing\, and yoga. He also has many recording credits to his name as a soloist\, bandleader\, and sideman. He has also been fortunate enough to perform with many world-renowned musicians and bands including Dr. John\, Paul Winter\, Mike Tamburo\, the Meters\, Galactic\, Clyde Stubblefield\, and Rufus Thomas to name a few.

While the Kentucky-raised\, New Orleans-schooled\, New York-honed\, and currently Nashville-based Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade (with whom he co-founded the Grammy nominated Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band)\, he is equally at ease in the roles of musical director\, side man\, or studio wizard. Cowherd’s stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills are driven\, simply\, by a lifelong drive to “just be a great musician.”\n\nIn 2013\, ArtistShare and Blue Note records released “Mercy”\, Cowherd’s first album as a leader. The record features Bill Frisell\, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. Cowherd and Blade also directed the all-star Joni Mitchell tribute “Joni 75” along with such artists as Brandi Carlile\, Glen Hansard\, Emmylou Harris\, Norah Jones\, Chaka Khan\, Diana Krall\, Kris Kristofferson\, Los Lobos with Marisoul\, Graham Nash\, Seal\, James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright. In 2017 Cowherd released “Gateway” on the exclusive “vinyl only” Newvelle record label. “Gateway” consists of seven compositions by Cowherd and one from Brian Blade\, and features Steve Cardenas and Tony Scherr. As an arranger\, Cowherd has scored for big band\, strings and symphony orchestra for Brandi Carlile\, Cassandra Wilson\, Lizz Wright\, the Fellowship Band and the Shreveport Symphony and the Loyola University Symphony Orchestra. In 2023 The Jon Cowherd Trio released “Pride & Joy”\, featuring John Patitucci\, Brian Blade\, Chris Potter\, and Alex Acuna.
