SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series: Macbeth 1971
DESCRIPTION:February 5\, 2026\nMacbeth (1971\, dir. Roman Polanski)\nRoman Polanski’s Macbeth is one of the most brutal and unflinching adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy ever put to film. Made in the shadow of personal trauma\, the film strips away romanticism and presents a raw\, blood-soaked vision of ambition\, paranoia\, and moral collapse. This is a medieval world defined by mud\, steel\, and violence\, where power is seized through cruelty and maintained through fear. \nPolanski emphasizes the physical reality of the play’s horrors\, rendering the supernatural elements as ominous rather than theatrical\, and grounding the story in an atmosphere of relentless dread. Jon Finch’s Macbeth is volatile and increasingly unhinged\, while Francesca Annis’s Lady Macbeth radiates cold resolve beneath a fragile surface. The result is a haunting\, deeply unsettling interpretation that treats Macbeth not as elevated literature\, but as a savage study of how unchecked ambition corrodes the human soul.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series: Zappa
DESCRIPTION:Zappa (2020\, dir. Alex Winter)\nIn collaboration with\nMore than a traditional music documentary\, Zappa is an expansive portrait of one of the most fiercely independent and uncompromising artists of the 20th century. Drawing from an unprecedented archive of personal recordings\, home movies\, and concert footage\, director Alex Winter allows Frank Zappa to tell his own story in his own voice\, with minimal mediation. \nThe film captures Zappa not just as a musical innovator\, but as a relentless critic of conformity\, censorship\, and cultural laziness. Composer\, bandleader\, satirist\, and provocateur\, Zappa’s work defied easy categorization\, and so does this film. Whether you’re a longtime devotee or a curious newcomer\, Zappa offers a rare look into the mind of an artist who refused to compromise and gladly paid the price for it.

Produced by Shovels & Rope’s Michael Trent\, the record helped Hiatt earn dates with the likes of John Prine\, Margo Price\, Drive-By Truckers\, and Hiss Golden Messenger in addition to festival slots everywhere from Pilgrimage to Luck Reunion. NPR called the album “courageous and affecting\,” while The Independent raved that it showcased Hiatt’s “gift for unpicking knotty lyrical themes in a personalised blend of countrified rock music\,” and Rolling Stone hailed it as “the most cohesive and declarative statement of the young songwriter’s career.” Hiatt delivered on the album’s promise with her similarly well-received 2020 follow-up\, Walking Proof\, and\, unable to tour due to the pandemic\, quickly returned to the studio again for 2021’s Lately\, which The Boston Herald said showcased her “knack for plainspoken\, poetic lyrics” and Uncut proclaimed to be “captivating.”

SUMMARY:Sold Out! Crosstown Arts Film Series: Natchez
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Theater\nSold Out! Thu\, Feb 19\, 7:00 PM\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nCrosstown Theater\nSold Out! Fri\, Feb 20\, 7:00 PM\n\n\n\n$10The price you’ll pay. No surprises later.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout\n\n\nNatchez (2025\, dir. Suzannah Herbert) \nNatchez is a quiet\, observant documentary that peers beneath the surface of a Southern town steeped in history\, ritual\, and contradiction. Rather than offering easy conclusions\, the film patiently assembles moments of everyday life\, revealing how memory\, myth\, and identity coexist and clash in subtle\, often unspoken ways. \nDirector Suzannah Herbert approaches her subject with restraint and empathy\, allowing tensions to emerge organically through image and conversation. The result is a film that feels less like an argument and more like a lived experience that is reflective\, unsettling\, and deeply human. No surprises later\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout\n\n\nNatchez (2025\, dir. Natchez invites viewers to sit with ambiguity and consider how the past continues to shape the present\, especially in places where history is never fully at rest. \nSpecial Guest: Stick around after the credits! SUMMARY:"Memphis R&B Is Not Dead" with Trinity Adair & Phillip Bond
DESCRIPTION:“Memphis R&B Is Not Dead” with Trinity Adair & Phillip Bond \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nFriday\, March 6\, 2025 \nDoors open at 7 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nIn early 2025\, online discourse reignited a long-standing conversation about the state of the Memphis R&B scene—and\, more broadly\, the misconception that Memphis music exists in only one lane. The truth is far richer: Memphis is home to a dynamic spectrum of sound\, from alternative to traditional genres\, each brimming with artistry\, identity\, and cultural weight. For those who claim they can only hear one genre\, they simply aren’t listening closely enough. This collaboration between Trinity Adair and Phillip Bond aims to change that. \nTrinity Adair is a Nashville-raised singer-songwriter and recent University of Memphis Music Business graduate whose Memphis journey has been defined by passion\, curiosity\, and community. Trinity has already left her mark on the city—hosting the weekly radio show For the Gworlz on 91.7 FM WYXR\, collaborating with a diverse roster of local artists\, and contributing her talents to the historic Overton Park Shell. \nPhillip Bond is a 29-year-old Tennessee native. Born in Jackson and raised in Memphis\, his roots bleed music\, imagination\, and authenticity. From performing at a young age in church and in choirs to performing as a background singer for Kristen Chenoweth\, Phillip knows that music is what he was destined for. While he was studying at the University of Memphis\, he went on to perform in multiple choir groups\, feature in Pentatonix’s music video for “O Come\, All Ye Faithful”\, opened for K Michelle and Jeremiah\, and sang with American soprano\, Angela Brown.  \nThis show doesn’t just entertain; it proves a point: Memphis music is alive\, expansive\, and more diverse than ever.

SUMMARY:Recent Future + General Labor
DESCRIPTION:Recent Future + General Labor  \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts  \nSaturday\, March 7\, 2026 \nDoors open at 7 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$18 in advance (plus fees) | $22 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE  \n\nRecent Future\n\n\n\nFor one night only\, Recent Future transforms The Green Room into a dance floor for the doomed and the dreamers. Experience the band live as their music videos engulf the room in flickering fantasies\, blurring the lines between the concert you’re watching and the world they’re building. Memphis favorites General Labor will start the night off.\n\n\nMemphis-based Charlie Davis (Trash Goblin\, Detachment Kit) and David Johnson (James and the Ultrasounds\, Tall David) met in Governor’s School for the Arts in 1998. Their decades’ long friendship\, fueled by late-night jams and hangouts\, resulted in the creation of Recent Future. As the concept took root during the pandemic\, their ideas reflected the world’s uncertainty and upheaval\, mixed with the personal reflection\, anxiety and ultimately\, hope\, of new fathers. Their respective artistic mindsets meld into bleeding-edge synth punk that’s simultaneously danceable yet doom-laden. Vinyl release to follow later this year via Red Curtain Records.\n\n\n\n“Ardent\, Uncompromising\, Danceable electro-clash doom dance\, Synth punk\, Powerful and assured\, Insightful” – Liz Lane (DJ Modern Girl WEVL)\n\n\n\nGeneral Labor\n\n\n\nThe beauty of General Labor is that they’re impossible to pin down. As they prepare their third official album Production Metrics\, General Labor have found themselves blending industrial\, coldwave\, and punk into a mix with no easy reference points. Advance singles like “Strays” and “Death Comes Knocking” follow the band’s dual 2024 releases\, Galaxy Motors and The Airtight Garage\, which both proffered their own rebalancing of the sonic mix that lives at the heart of General Labor’s music. These tracks\, along with reconstructions of underground hits like “Ghost Rider” and “Eisbär\,” offer new glimpses into the band’s synthetic-meets-organic ethos. Together\, Thomas Corbin\, Elijah Poston\, and Mitch Mealer’s music serves as a response to the technological hellscape that eats at all of us. Humanity is always at the heart of General Labor\, even when it’s obscured by stabbing synths and gnarled rebar percussion.\n\n\n\n– Machine Duplication Recordings

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series: Hardware
DESCRIPTION:March 12\, 2026\nHardware (1990\, dir. Richard Stanley)\nA cult classic of dystopian science fiction\, Hardware is a ferocious blast of cyberpunk paranoia and industrial-age anxiety. Set in a scorched near future\, the film follows the deadly consequences of reassembling a military robot designed solely to kill\, serving as a grim metaphor for humanity’s inability to stop rebuilding its own destruction. \nWith its abrasive soundtrack\, brutal visuals\, and claustrophobic energy\, Hardware feels closer to a punk album than a conventional science fiction film. Director Richard Stanley fuses comic-book aesthetics\, body horror\, and apocalyptic dread into a raw\, unpolished vision that still resonates decades later. Loud\, mean\, and unapologetically grimy\, this is science fiction as rebellion\, best experienced in a theater at full volume.
