SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents PLAYTIME
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a screening of Playtime in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 1\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Films begin at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nJacques Tati / 1967 / 124 minutes / Not Rated \nJacques Tati’s gloriously choreographed\, nearly wordless comedies about confusion in an age of high technology reached their apotheosis with PlayTime. For this monumental achievement\, a nearly three-year-long\, bank-breaking production\, Tati again thrust the lovably old-fashioned Monsieur Hulot\, along with a host of other lost souls\, into a baffling modern world\, this time Paris. With every inch of its superwide frame crammed with hilarity and inventiveness\, PlayTime is a lasting record of a modern era tiptoeing on the edge of oblivion. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Modern Masters Jazz Series: Roland Barber and The Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Roland Barber and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, August 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nNative of Nashville\, TN\, known around the world as “Music City\,” trombonist Roland Barber enjoys a career full of diverse and exciting musical pursuits at the highest level. Roland has achieved a powerful\, soulful and spiritual artistry as a jazz performer\, so much so that Curtis Fuller (John Coltrane’s only trombonist) exclaimed upon hearing him\, “Now THAT’s what jazz trombone is all about!”  Roland’s style is a synthesis of jazz’s finest elements – sporting a keen\, fluent command of the bebop language\, tempered with a compelling sense of melodic “voice” that’s rooted in the swagger and soul of the blues and swing traditions. Roland employs a warm\, personal tone that is lyrical and full\, yet ready to burn with heat and intensity when the moment presents itself.  Roland is also known for his masterful plunger-mute playing – a gem in the music of jazz that goes back to Tricky Sam Nanton of Ellington’s orchestra and a study has been passed down the generations\, most directly to Roland through mentors Steve Turre and Al Grey. \nBarber has performed with titans of jazz music as well as young lions\, including Stefon Harris\, Sean Jones\, Clark Terry\, Branford Marsalis\, Houston Person\, Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, the Chico O’Farill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, Lainie Cooke and the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Ensemble. Barber has performed in venues the world over\, from Manhattan to Estonia\, including Carnegie Hall\, Birdland\, the Blue Note\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, and Madison Square Garden. Television appearances include MTV’s Making the Band\, NBC’s Saturday Night Live\, CBS’ Today Show and the ESPN Awards. Beyond the jazz realm\, Roland has performed with a stylistically broad “who’s who” of the music scene\, including the Wooten Brothers\, Slavic Soul Party\, Lauryn Hill\, the Nashville Symphony\, Lady A\, Melinda Doolittle\, Chaka Khan\, Aretha Franklin\, Lauren Daigle\, Taj Mahal\, Keb’ Mo\, the Wood Brothers\, Cissy Houston\, La India\, Roberto Blades\, Take 6\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, Kirk Whalum\, the NBC Saturday Night Live Band and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. \nAlongside being a compelling performer\, Barber is also a celebrated composer and arranger\, and was awarded a New Works Jazz Grant from Chamber Music America\, which led to the writing and premier of his first extended suite\, Songs of the Village\, written for quintet. This suite saw its world premiere at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in 2010. \nHaving relocated back to Nashville\, TN after a seven year tenure in NYC\, Roland is now a mainstay in the Nashville studio scene\, having recorded in almost every genre imaginable. Roland’s  combination of experience and talent that puts him at the top of the city’s list when brass performance is needed.  Despite the global difficulties of 2020\, Roland celebrated the first year of recording on EVERY brass instrument (from trumpet to tuba) in the studio\, and is trailblazing a path as a one-man\, multi-instrumentalist brass machine. \nRoland also is quite active in education circles\, having taught for Manhattan School of Music\, the Nashville Symphony\, Vanderbilt University\, Nashville Notes and the Nashville Jazz Workshop.  Roland has given masterclasses around the country at venues including Vanderbilt University\, University of North Carolina\, University of Michigan\, Middle TN State University\, Tennessee State University\, and others.  An educational highlight\, Roland gave a masterclass/clinic for the 2021 JEN Clinic entitled\, “The Voice of the Plunger\,” where he detailed the history and development of the language of the storied mute’s history in jazz.  Beginning with the inception of the mute in Ellington’s early bands\, Roland traced the development of plunger artistry through to the modern master practitioners that helped shape his own approach\, most notably Clark Terry\, Al Grey and Steve Turre. Roland can be found now leading his own bands throughout the region\, be it his small group jazz quartet/quintet\, his NOLA-inspired Righteous Few Brass Band\, or his Salsa-In-English band\, Souvenir. \nBarber holds an M.M. in Jazz Studies from Manhattan School of Music (2005)\, as well as an Artist Diploma (2003) and B.M. in Jazz Studies (2001)\, both from Indiana University.

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Pierce Pettis
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Pierce Pettis in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, August 10\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter a lifetime of crafting finely-wrought\, heart-touching songs\, singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis (he/him) feels that he’s finally found his comfort zone. “The biggest change\,” he says of this point in his career “has been getting over myself and realizing this is a job and a craft. And the purpose is not fame and fortune (whatever that is) but simply doing good work.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“From the time I was very little\, I always had the music going in my head\,” Pettis explains. “In school\, I met other kids who wanted to be rock stars\, just like me.  From the time we were around 10 or so up through high school\, we put together various bands — all of them horrible.” \nHis “horrible” bands didn’t deter him though and even though he had a nagging feeling  (“I thought I was supposed to be a doctor or something.”) he persevered\, not only playing music but writing songs in a mix of rock\, folk\, country and R&B genres that landed him an unpaid position as a staff writer for Muscle Shoals Sounds Studios. While there\, his track “Song at the End of the Movie” found its way to Joan Baez’s 1979 album Honest Lullaby. \nPettis hit the road and became a member of the “Fast Folk” movement in New York in the mid-1980s and was a staff songwriter for PolyGram from 1993-2000.  Pierce Pettis’ songs have been recorded by artists including Susan Ashton\, Dar Williams\, Garth Brooks and Art Garfunkel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Green Room: Operated by Crosstown Arts\, The Green Room is committed to providing the best possible environment for the two most important components of a musical performance: the artists work and the audiences listening experience. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Intimate\, attentive performances by exceptional singer-songwriters\, proudly presented in Memphis\, Folk All Y’all is a public\, nonprofit listening room series supported by our pledges from our community. \nEntry requirements may change but your purchase indicates acceptance of any necessary health policy.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents RETURN TO REASON: THE SHORT FILMS OF MAN RAY
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a screening of Return to Reason: The Short Films of Man Ray in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 22\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Films begin at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nMan Ray / 2023 / 70 minutes / Not Rated \nThe four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929\, Le Retour à la raison\, Emak-Bakia\, L’Étoile de mer and Les Mystères du Château du Dé represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema\, a seminal nexus of experimental technique\, surrealist narrative\, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt\, pepper\, pins\, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns\, a twirling fairground ride\, and a female nude\, among other striking images\, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison\, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason\, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. The band’s cosmic sounds complement Ray’s work by conjuring the beautiful\, ineffable\, haunting\, and sublime. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents MADE IN ENGLAND
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a screening of Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 29\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Films begin at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nDavid Hinton / 2024 / 131 minutes / Not Rated \nMartin Scorsese first encountered the films of Powell and Pressburger when he was a child\, sitting in front of the family TV. When their famous logo came up on screen\, Scorsese says\, “You knew you were in for fantasy\, wonder\, magic – real film magic.” Now\, in this documentary\, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies\, including The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp\, Black Narcissus\, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. \n“Certain films you simply run all the time and you live with them.” Scorsese says. “As you grow older they grow deeper. I’m not sure how it happens\, but it does. For me\, that body of work is a wondrous presence\, a constant source of energy\, and a reminder of what life and art are all about.” Drawing on a rich array of archive material\, Scorsese explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger – two romantics and idealists\, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950s. Scorsese celebrates their ability to create “subversive commercial movies” and describes how deeply their films have influenced his own work.” \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Daniel Champagne
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Daniel Champagne in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, September 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nOne reviewer recently wrote – ‘Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne is just magical’ (themusic.com.au) \nThe story goes that the young Australian singer\, songwriter and one-of-a-kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a five-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing solo wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing what would become the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school\, turned professional and hit the road. \nThe following decade saw him release 5 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe with upwards of 300 shows per year\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela. \nIn early 2020 as the COVID pandemic ground all touring to a halt\, Daniel returned to Australia writing music and further honing his craft and will return to international audiences with a swag of new songs and a complete new live show. For fans of guitar\, songs or just artistic expression at it’s finest this show is a must see!

This very special performance will feature saxophonist Mindi Abair. \nMINDI ABAIR\nTwo-time GRAMMY nominee Mindi Abair is a saxophonist\, vocalist\, and author of “How To Play Madison Square Garden.” You might know her as the featured saxophonist on American Idol\, or from touring and/or recording with Aerosmith\, Duran Duran\, Gregg Allman\, Smokey Robinson\, and more. As a solo artist\, she has consistently topped the Contemporary Jazz and Blues charts\, earning her 1 st GRAMMY nomination in 2014 for Summer Horns and her 2 nd nomination in 2015 for her solo album Wild Heart. In 2019 she launched www.wineandjazz.com bringing together the worlds of wine and music through her wine club and worldwide adventures. \nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\nAs well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”—featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Being There in Crosstown Theater.  \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, September 19\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Film begins at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nHal Ashby / 1979 / 130 minutes / Rated PG \nIn one of his most finely tuned performances\, Peter Sellers plays the pure-hearted\, childlike Chance\, a gardener who is forced into the wilds of Washington\, D.C.\, when his wealthy guardian dies. Shocked to discover that the real world doesn’t respond to the click of a remote\, Chance stumbles into celebrity after being taken under the wing of a tycoon (Melvyn Douglas\, in an Oscar-winning performance)\, who mistakes his protégé’s horticultural mumblings for sagacious pronouncements on life and politics\, and whose wife (Shirley MacLaine) targets Chance as the object of her desire. Adapted from a novel by Jerzy Kosinski\, this satire\, both deeply melancholy and hilarious\, is the culmination of Hal Ashby’s remarkable string of films in the 1970s\, and a carefully modulated examination of the ideals\, anxieties\, and media-fueled delusions that shaped American culture during that decade. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:TAE & the Neighborly
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents TAE & the Neighborly in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, September 21\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nTae & The Neighborly\, a Wisconsin-based soul-pop\, R&B group\, found themselves playing music together in a very unconventional way. They were all neighbors\, each one living alone on one floor of a five-story flat.\n\n\n\nCake-baking is a shared passion of the five-member group\, but in the sugar shortages early in the 2020 pandemic\, they found themselves so continually knocking on each other’s doors asking for a single cup of sugar that a group decision was made to all move in together and share cake-baking resources. Since everyone knows all good rhythms begin in the kitchen\, it wasn’t before long that the group began to write and perform together across the nation.\n\n\n\nCritics hail the group as “having more kick than a bagged-up mule” (Rotary Times) and their live show “… going down smoother than a can of [beans] warmed on the campfire” (Cowboy Gazette).

SUMMARY:Dan & Peggy Reeder with Greg Cartwright Krista Wroten
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a special performance from indie-folk legend Dan Reeder and his daughter Peggy with an opening performance from Memphis-based musos Greg Cartwright and Krista Wroten in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, September 24\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 in advance | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nDan Reeder\, Oh Boy Records’ longest signed artist besides John Prine\, is a self-sufficient artist in every aspect of his work. The cover of each one of his albums bears artwork he created himself. He’s built a majority of the instruments you hear. From guitar pickups to microphones\, preamps and mixers. He’s built steel string guitars\, electric guitars\, banjos\, drums\, basses\, cellos\, violins\, clarinets\, and even a saxophone (note from Dan: “I’ll never do that again”). \n\n\n\nThe bluntness of Reeder’s lyrics are softened by his crooning; yet\, even with multi-layered harmonies\, his voice maintains its iconic “wisp”. Reeder’s musical intelligence is as present as ever. You’re hearing every piece of a self-made artist and his multifaceted skill set — from the soulful\, smoky vocal overlay to a singular\, meticulous guitar sound\, but best of all\, you’re hearing the ingenuity that is Dan Reeder.

SUMMARY:ANA•LOG\, Size Matters\, and Still
DESCRIPTION:The Galleries at Crosstown Arts\nFree and open to the public \nANA•LOG – Lester Merriweather \nFourteen Pics is a cumulative project referencing several continuing bodies of work by Lester Julian Merriweather examining the concept of agency over Black Visualization within American Popular Culture. The works in ANA•LOG draw upon several sources: They take direct visual inspiration from the compositions of the 1982-88 Basquiat-Warhol Collaborations. ANA•LOG’s methodology invokes the long-rumored Dr. Dre concept album The Planets. The gestural treatment of the layered and excavated\nsurfaces in ANA•LOG pays homage to the experimental processes of the mid-60s Developer tool works by the late Jack Whitten. Language is key to the works included in ANA•LOG. In breaking down its linguistic aspects\, Merriweather examined varied forms of the word Analog\, defined as “not computerized”; Analog is a counter-cultural delineation that separates itself from the “Digital”. The individually collaged-by-hand elemental “units” in ANA•LOG act in a fashion similar to pixels in the Digital space. Referencing Memphis slang\, “Ana” is a shortened form of “Animosity”. “Log” in this instance serves as a “Recorded History”. ANA•LOG essentially serves as a “Record of Remembered Angers” obtained through oft repeated racial disparities within American Visual culture. \nSize Matters – Alex Paulus\nI’ve been thinking about scale and proportion a lot lately. The size of an object can make it seem important or unimportant. And we all measure things according to the size of ourselves. Things that are smaller than us can seem trivial\, while larger objects can feel overwhelming. Yet\, when considering the vastness of the universe\, our planet seems tiny and inconsequential.\nMy current series focuses on the juxtaposition of small figures within expansive landscapes\, alongside large-scale portraits depicting figures of profound personal meaning from my childhood. The pieces involving small figures in massive spaces\, create a sense of insignificance. The large portraits give off a sense of immense importance. But this is all relative to the size of the viewer and how it makes them feel.\nI often think about how humans fit into this world and how small we actually are compared to the rest of the universe. I am very interested in the purpose of human existence\, but it seems like we do a lot of weird things for no reason. And I’d like to learn as much as I can with my time here on Earth. \nStill – Michelle Fair\nMy current work is more about the process of the painting than anything else. Of course\, there are themes and subjects I gravitate towards—figures and landscapes\, ideas of solitude and loneliness\, etc.—but there is something so explorative and meditative about painting that I’ve noticed becoming more and more the driving factor for me. I find when I try to come up with ideas that are motivated by the final product I get stuck. Lately I have decided to forego the control of the final product and just go where a piece takes me. In doing so\, I am looking at colors\, shapes\, and textures differently than I was before\, and I make decisions I probably wouldn’t have made if I had planned everything out. I think focusing on the process has allowed me to lose a little rigidity and explore more\, and that is what these pieces have been born from.

DESCRIPTION:The Galleries at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, September 27\, 2024\nTime: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nANA • LOG: \nFOURTEEN PICS \n  \n  \nANA•LOG: Fourteen Pics is a cumulative project referencing elements from several continuing bodies of work by Lester Julian Merriweather including #JETBlack\, WHITE(S) ONLY\, Vanilla Extract\, #WGW\, COLOR(ED) THEORY and Merriweather’s most recent collage series\, #BetterGardensAndJungles. \n  \n  \nThe works presented draw upon several sources: They take direct visual inspiration from the compositions of the 1982-88 Basquiat-Warhol Collaborations. ANA•LOG’s methodology invokes the long-rumored Dr. Dre concept album The Planets in which the famed producer executed each individual track of the album in a completely different genre\, thus creating an intensely lush atmospheric soundscape that still would exist as parts of a whole. The gestural treatment of the layered and excavated surfaces pay homage to the experimental processes of the mid-60s Developer tool works by the late Jack Whitten as well as the innovative organic Tesserae paintings that Whitten continued creating until his death in 2018. \n  \n  \nLanguage is key to the works included in ANA•LOG. In terms of Memphis slang\, “Ana” is a shortened form of “Animosity”. “Log” in this instance serves as a “Recorded History”.
