The Green Room Jazz Jam strives to provide an inclusive and collaborative environment where jazz musicians of all ages and backgrounds may perform\, network\, and interact together in the interest of further fostering Memphis’ diverse music scene. \nAlex Upton is a Memphis-based saxophonist\, composer\, and educator with a deep passion for musics both old and new. Alex is a nationally awarded soloist that has performed and recorded with artists such as Rahsaan Barber\, Rachel Therrien\, Ted Ludwig\, Baron Tymas\, Stephen Anderson\, and James Sexton. Awarded first prize in the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, Alex has performed at both JEN and NASA Conferences\, and has performed at regionally renowned venues including the Brooks Museum of Art\, Crosstown Arts Green Room\, Durham’s Sharp Nine Gallery\, and Bond Brothers Eastside. Young up-and-coming musicians and local jazz veterans alike join together for spontaneous music making\, sharing the stage as they tackle the expansive body of repertoire found within the jazz idiom. The Green Room Jazz Jam strives to provide an inclusive and collaborative environment where jazz musicians of all ages and backgrounds may perform\, network\, and interact together in the interest of further fostering Memphis’ diverse music scene. \nAlex Upton is a Memphis-based saxophonist\, composer\, and educator with a deep passion for musics both old and new. Alex is a nationally awarded soloist that has performed and recorded with artists such as Rahsaan Barber\, Rachel Therrien\, Ted Ludwig\, Baron Tymas\, Stephen Anderson\, and James Sexton. Awarded first prize in the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, Alex has performed at both JEN and NASA Conferences\, and has performed at regionally renowned venues including the Brooks Museum of Art\, Crosstown Arts Green Room\, Durham’s Sharp Nine Gallery\, and Bond Brothers Eastside. Their work as a performer and composer is featured on Summit Records with the 360 Jazz Initiative\, and under their own name on their newest full-length album release “Portraits of a Silent Moment”.

This group was formed in 2015 and has released an album June 1\, 2016 titled “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” that has received “Most Highly Recommended” from critics such as Jazz Times\, Improvijazzation Nation\, All About Jazz\, AXS\, and many others. The Rudiment has performed in some of the top venues in the NYC area such as the Blue Note NYC\, Minton’s Harlem\, Club Bonafide\, Cornelia St Café\, and many more. The Rudiment performed at the 2016 Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis\, TN; 2017 Katy Jazz Festival in Katy\, TX (where they also put on masterclasses for high school/college students and held workshops for high school jazz bands); Jazz in the Park in Patterson\, NJ for 3 years running; plus many more. They performed at the Made in New York Gala along side jazz greats Randy Brecker\, Fransico Mela\, and John Patituci. Drummer\, Jeremy Warren\, composes and arranges for the group while vocalist\, Dermel Warren\, handles the lyrical composition. J&D bring their deep Soul & Gospel roots mixed with NYC’s Hip-Hop & Jazz influences to create their own unique style.\nABOUT BETTY CARTER\nBetty Carter developed a legendary reputation\, along with Art Blakey\, as one of the great mentors for young jazz musicians. Equally legendary was her singing prowess\, creating a distinctive style of improvisation that could transcend any song.\nCarter’s bands served a dual purpose: to create her own great music and to help young musicians develop their craft. Many of the musicians who passed through her groups went on to lead their own groups\, such as Geri Allen\, Stephen Scott\, Don Braden\, and Christian McBride. She also developed a mentoring program called Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead through links with organizations like the International Association for Jazz Education\, 651 Arts\, and the Kennedy Center. The program was a one- to two-week teaching seminar where nationally selected promising young jazz musicians learned from Carter and other seasoned musicians\, culminating in a final concert of instructors and students together. Jazz Ahead was one of Carter’s proudest achievements\, and she worked with the program up until her death. She received the National Medal of Arts in 1997.\nABOUT ELVIN JONES\n\nElvin Jones was an American jazz drummer of the post-bop era. Most famously a member of John Coltrane’s quartet\, with whom he recorded from late 1960 to late 1965\, Jones appeared on such albums as My Favorite Things\, A Love Supreme\, Ascension and Live at Birdland. After 1966\, Jones led his own trio\, and later larger groups under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. His brothers Hank and Thad were also celebrated jazz musicians with whom he occasionally recorded. Elvin was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995. In his The History of Jazz\, jazz historian and critic Ted Gioia calls Jones “one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz”.
