The program includes works by Jennifer Jolley\, Caroline Shaw\, and Michael Fiday. \nThe music of Evan Williams has been performed across the country and internationally by members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra\, the International Contemporary Ensemble\, QuinceEnsemble\, Fifth House Ensemble\, and at festivals such as SEAMUS\, the New Music Gathering\, the Electroacoustic Barn Dance\, and the New York City Electronic Music Festival. He has been commissioned by notable performers and ensembles including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Urban Playground Chamber Orchestra. His work can be found on recordings by The Namaste Ensemble’s “No Borders Quartet” and Levels. Williams has received a number of awards and honors\, including serving as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural Classical Roots Composer-in-Residence in 2018. Williams holds a DMA in Composition with a cognate in Orchestral Conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati\, where he also served as a teaching assistant in electronic music. He also holds degrees from Bowling Green State University and Lawrence University. Williams serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities at Rhodes College\, where he teaches composition\, music technology\, and leads the Rhodes Orchestra. He previously held teaching positions at Lawrence University\, Bennington College\, and at the Walden School. \nJennifer Jolley is a composer\, blogger\, and professor person. She is also a cat lover and part-time creative opera producer. Jennifer’s work draws toward subjects that are political and even provocative. Her collaboration with librettist Kendall A\, Prisoner of Conscience\, has been described as “the ideal soundtrack and perhaps balm for our current ‘toxic’…times” by Frank J. Oteri of NewMusicBox. Her piece Blue Glacier Decoy\, written as a musical response to the Olympic National Park\, depicts the melting glaciers of the Pacific Northwest. Her partnership with writer Scott Woods\, You Are Not Alone\, evokes the fallout of the #MeToo Movement. Jennifer’s works have been performed by ensembles worldwide. She has received commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music\, the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble\, Quince Ensemble\, and many others. \nCaroline Shaw is a New York-based musician — vocalist\, violinist\, composer\, and producer — who performs in solo and collaborative projects. She was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013 for Partita for 8 Voices\, written for the Grammy-winning Roomful of Teeth\, of which she is a member. Caroline’s film scores include Erica Fae’s To Keep the Light and Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline as well as the upcoming short 8th Year of the Emergency by Maureen Towey. She has produced for Kanye West (The Life of Pablo; Ye) and Nas (NASIR)\, and has contributed to records by The National\, and by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry. \nDescribed as “clearly structured\, colorful and unflaggingly compelling work” (Philadelphia Inquirer) and “a precise appeal to an inner ear beyond the mind” (Gramophone Magazine)\, the music of Michael Fiday is known for its expressive directness\, inventive sound world\, gradually unfolding dramatic narratives\, and distinctive rhythmic energy. His work has been commissioned and performed internationally by a broad range of renowned performers spanning the worlds of classical and contemporary music\, including Atlanta Symphony\, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, American Composers Orchestra\, Oakland East Bay Symphony\, Orquestra Sinfonica de Guanajuato\, Percussion Ensemble of The Hague\, Mantra Percussion\, Percussion Group Cincinnati\, Duo Damiana (flutist Molly Barth\, guitarist Dieter Hennings)\, pianists Marc-Andre Hamelin and James Tocco\, violinists Carla Kihlstedt and Graeme Jennings\, and electric guitarists Seth Josel\, Derek Johnson and Taylor Levine.

The band performs dark\, improvisational arrangements with particular focus on Bulgarian folk songs\, three-part vocal harmonies\, and driving\, odd-metered rhythms. Hailed as a band with “galactic ambitions” by The New Orleans Advocate\, Blato Zlato features musicians from Europe and the United States with a collective goal to produce meaningful cultural and musical bridges between the two continents. In 2019\, Blato Zlato released their anticipated sophomore album\, In The Wake\, following their acclaimed 2017 releases of their debut album Swamp Gold and the limited-edition EP Voyage. They have toured both within the U.S. on the East and West Coasts as well as in Europe. This is their first time performing in Memphis.

Inspired by post-rock and shoegaze artists\, Malcolm uses Dinosauria to craft complex soundscapes using a guitar\, effects pedals\, a loop machine\, and some improvisation in Malcolm’s unique fashion. \nDUET FOR THEREMIN AND LAP STEEL \nBased in Atlanta\, Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel has been recording and performing since 2006 and consists of Scott Burland on theremin and Frank Schultz on lap steel guitar. \nTheir music is improvised and has been described as “experimental by nature\, but easy on the ears.” \nTheir latest offering “ ‘Oumuamua” is inspired by asteroids and comets and is available now at http://dftals.bandcamp.com. At age four\, he began teaching himself melodies on the piano by ear. He started taking lessons the same year and began developing his skills and sound. His first gig came at the age of nine when he started playing frequently at his local hometown diner in Arkansas. From there\, he expanded his reach across the river to Memphis and down Highway 61 to Mississippi. At seventeen\, he began writing his own music. Raised on the sounds of Memphis legends like Jerry Lee Lewis\, B.B. King\, and Elvis Presley\, Wyly mixed those influences with the blues from nearby Mississippi and the country music in Arkansas to develop his own musical style. As ambassadors of music\, Ensemble X believes there is only one type of music\, and that is “good music.” \nJerald Walker (violin/composer) is a recent graduate of the University of Memphis with a B.M. in Music Theory and Composition. He has composed three classical symphonies and arranged for gospel\, hip-hop\, and pop music. \nRenicea Michelle Bell (violin/vocalist) is a graduate of the University Of Memphis with a B.M. in Music Business. She began singing at very young age and loves all types of music. She is equally at home on the violin and just recently performed at a Juneteenth festival. She is currently in graduate school pursuing a masters degree in Education. \nMario Williams (viola/violin) is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a B.M. in Music Performance. He has performed with several professional ensembles in the Mid-South area\, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Mario has a fiddling background that blends into his classical music background. He has a love of chamber music and music education. \nJoseph Miller (cello) is a graduate from the University of Memphis with a B.M. in Cello Performance. He has been playing since the age of 10. He has performed with several other professional ensembles in the Mid-South area. \nAll the members of Ensemble X are graduates of Shelby County Schools and their music programs.

He has performed alongside internationally acclaimed musicians including John Clayton\, Maria Schneider\, Sean Jones\, Terrell Stafford\, Kenny Werner\, Allison Miller\, Nat Adderley Jr.\, Andre Hayward\, Bruce Saunders\, Greg Osby\, Doug Lawrence\, Butch Miles\, Ralph Bowen\, Reggie Thomas\, Red Young\, Conrad Herwig\, Serafin Aguilar\, and Lukas Graham. As a bandleader\, he leads groups at nationally acclaimed jazz venues including Jazz St. Louis and the Elephant Room. \nHe previously held academic appointments at Texas State University\, Texas Lutheran University\, and Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Most recently\, he served as an Associate Professor of Music at Mineral Area College and the Director of the MAC Carol Moore Memorial Jazz Festival. \nWood earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 2014. He holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

We live in an era where dogma is out of place; composers can\, and should\, draw from an unprecedentedly broad array of influences in their work – including popular music\, avant-garde techniques\, and everything in between. The ten ICEBERG composers hail from different schools and cultivate radically different sounds\, but their contrasting musical languages belie shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. ICEBERG is committed to radical stylistic inclusiveness\, excellence of craft\, dialogue with the audience\, and a modernization of the concert-going experience.

Despite its complications and glossing over of what life was like for the poor in Rio\, Black Orpheus is without doubt a cultural milestone and an influence on later works in film and music. DESCRIPTION:This Elvis Week\, Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts presents the theatrical world premiere of The Faithful\,  filmmaker Annie Berman’s 20-year exploration of fandom\, memorabilia\, memory\, and legacy within the orbits of three of the biggest cultural icons of our time: Pope John Paul II\, Elvis Presley\, and Diana\, Princess of Wales.  PLUS: Annie Berman will be in attendance for Q&A following the film! \nDoors at 6:30 pm | Show at 7 pm \nTickets: $10 (or $8 with Indie Memphis member credits) \nA Pope John Paul II lollipop. An Elvis Presley shower curtain. A Princess Diana teacup. These are just some of the countless pieces of memorabilia that these pop culture icons’ most devoted fans collect and cherish… but why? The Faithful’s director\, Annie Berman\, explores the deep veneration and legacies of the Pope\, the Princess\, and the King. Over the course of 20 years\, Berman profiles these figures’ biggest fans and makes numerous pilgrimages to Vatican City\, Graceland\, and Kensington Palace.
