SUMMARY:Fright-Tober: The VVitch
DESCRIPTION:In 1630s New England\, a Puritan family is banished from its settlement and establishes a farm beside a vast\, forbidding wilderness. When their infant son disappears and the crops begin to fail\, fear and suspicion turn the isolated family against itself. Written and directed by Robert Eggers\, The Witch draws upon period accounts and colonial folklore to create a meticulously crafted tale of religious terror\, repression\, and supernatural evil. Its slow-burning tension and haunting imagery make it a modern masterpiece of folk horror.

SUMMARY:Fright-Tober: Cure
DESCRIPTION:A Tokyo detective investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders\, each committed by a different person who can offer no clear explanation for the crime. The only connection is a mysterious stranger whose quiet questions leave confusion and violence in their wake. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, Cure is a hypnotic psychological horror film that replaces conventional shocks with a slow\, pervasive sense of dread. Its unsettling exploration of identity\, repression\, and suggestion lingers long after the mystery appears to be solved.

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis: Solo
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Davis: Solo\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts  \nFriday\, October 9th\, 2026  \nDoors open at 7:00 PM | Show starts at 7:30 PM \n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nCaroline Davis explores sonic textures offered by interactive technologies\, sharing sounds from the saxophone that she considers to be distinctive and quirky. Her solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present. \nShe makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open sources community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk). \nThe music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \n\n\n\n\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.

SUMMARY:Fall Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:  \nCrosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception of two new exhibitions\, “Fugitive Signals” – Corinne Jones\, and “Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective” – Carl Moore. Come celebrate the opening of new works with a musical experience by DJ LadyLove\, a special menu and a complimentary cocktail from Art Bar at Crosstown Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Exhibition will be on view through Sunday\, January 17\, 2027. \nWhen: October 9\, 2026 from 6pm to 8pm\nWhere: Crosstown Arts — 1350 Concourse Avenue\, Ste. 280 Memphis\, Tennessee 38104 Exhibition Run: October 9\, 2026-January 17\, 2027 \nFugitive Signals—Corinne Jones \nFugitive Signals\, a solo exhibition by Corinne Jones\, consists of a new body of paintings made at Crosstown Arts Residency\, and projected photographs of stairs found in Memphis. The ephemeral stairs ground the walls in a pictorial sense while the paintings appear to be shrouded in a balmy atmosphere that signifies the sky. Together\, the stairs and the paintings are connected by the concept of erasure. The stairs are evidence of absence. They lead to plateaus where buildings used to stand. The erasure is absolute\, but the remnant stairs are vestiges of histories hidden in plain sight. They persistently indicate what once was. The paintings are versicolor abstractions patterned together and clouded\, obscured\, etched\, and erased. They depict streaming banners covered in chevron motifs. The banners present a static presence that continuously beckons\, a fixed state of transience. The chevron\, a symbol of strength and protection\, is repeated with both conviction and irreverence. Repetition is the artist’s way of rewriting and over-writing existing conditions that are rooted in patriarchal systems. These interventions become a tool of subversion. The repeated gestures strip the motifs of their original authority and imbues them with new potentials. The collective whole of Fugitive Signals is a proposition to make the invisible visible in the hope of forming new collective memories. \nCorinne Jones b.1972 Memphis\, TN. Jones has lived and worked in New York City since 1991. She earned an MFA from Columbia University in 2007 and a BFA from The School of Visual Arts in 1996. Jones has realized public art projects at Situations Gallery\, New York City\, NY; Elizabeth Street Garden\, New York City\, NY; Madison Park\, Memphis\, TN; and Huling Street\, Memphis\, TN. She has exhibited solo shows at Situations Gallery\, New York City\, NY; Jackie Klempay\, Brooklyn\, NY; Tops Gallery\, Memphis\, TN; The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts\, NC and has participated in various group shows including the Institute of Contemporary Arts\, London\, UK\, Tate Modern; London\, UK; and BWA Wroclaw Galleries of Contemporary Art\, Warsaw\, Poland. Her work is held in many private and public institutions including permanent collections at Museum of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design\, RI; Memphis Brooks Museum of Art\, TN; Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University\, NJ; Turchin Center for the Visual Arts\, NC; New York Presbyterian Hospital\, NY; and TD Bank\, NY. Her artwork has received critical praise from The New Yorker\, Art News\, Art Slant\, Artcore Journal\, Ravelin\, the Brooklyn Rail\, Cultured Magazine and Impulse Magazine. \n  \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective—Carl Moore \nMy current work is about exploring the day to day social and cultural identity of the black experience and how it relates to our past and present. I want to show those moments that make us who we are as individuals\, and how we not only exist in our personal and communal living spaces but how we exist in the world around us. The physical and emotional impact of our history has left generational scares that we still are healing from\, and those scares have had long lasting effects on how we see the world and how we function within it. I try to create narratives that address social and personal standards that we as a culture have chosen to live by. Those narratives are about the subtle moments of clarity and peace\, creating a place where we question those standards and react accordingly. \nOngoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is about placing multiple bodies of work together that I’ve created over the last 15 years\, to not only see how the work has changed in technique and conversation\, but also to see how I’ve changed as the artist creating the conversation. I think they both work in tandem\, the artist needs to create the work and the work needs the artist to create it. That’s how the creative process works. The show is about moving from one image to the next\, and creating a continuous conversation between me and the work and deciding how I want to present it to the viewer. It’s a social experiment with color\, shape and form. I’m always trying to make the next painting better than the last. I’m not saying that there was anything wrong with the previous work\, I just wanted to do something that I didn’t do in the last painting. I think my work has become more complex over the years\, because I am trying to say more. As I get older\, I guess I have more to say. Ongoing: A Personal Retrospective\, is an ongoing conversation between the artist and the viewer\, where no one actually talks to each other\, because the artwork is the conversation. \nCarl E. SUMMARY:Hannibal Buress
DESCRIPTION:Hannibal Buress\nThe Crosstown Arts Theater \nSunday\, October 4th\, 2026  \nDoors open at 6:00 PM | Show starts at 7:00 PM \nOrchestra Seating $42 in advance (plus fees) \nGeneral Admission $35 in advance (plus fees)  \nTickets go on sale June 30th! \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nComing to the Crosstown Theater stage is comedian Hannibal Buress! \n\n\n\nHannibal Buress is a powerhouse of comedy\, television\, and film. From writing for Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock to starring in blockbusters like Neighbors and Spider-Man\, Buress has spent over two decades cementing his status as an entertainment icon. Don’t miss a night of sharp wit and brilliant storytelling from one of the industry’s most versatile creators. \n\nAbout Hannibal \nFrom within the bustling heart of the Windy City\, a comedian named Hannibal Buress embarked upon his journey. The year was 2002\, the location\, the Big Muddy Room at Southern Illinois University. Guided by the wisdom of his friend Chidi and sharpened in the fires of Tony Trimm’s “Sunday School sessions\,” young Buress was prepared to take the comedy world by storm. \nIn 2006\, he emerged from the shadows\, performing at Montreal’s ‘Just for Laughs’ New Faces\, an event that led to his first international appearance on “Late Night with Jörgen Raymann” in Holland. From that moment\, he continued to grow\, creating a series of successful stand-up specials including “Animal Furnace\,” “Live From Chicago\,” “Hannibal Takes Edinburgh\,” “Comedy Camisado\,” and “Miami Nights”. \nFate intervened in 2009\, when a last-minute booking on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” led to a meeting with Seth Meyers. This encounter gave him the opportunity to write for the legendary show “Saturday Night Live.” It was there\, my young turtles\, where Buress had one sketch air – a moment he credits to the creativity of his cousin Percy. He cherishes the memory of watching Rihanna uttering his lines in the “Shy Ronnie” sketch. After a season there\, he moved to “30 Rock\,” filling the space left vacant by the departure of Donald Glover. \nIn the realm of film\, Buress has proven his versatility\, showcasing his talents in “Neighbors\,” “Neighbors 2\,” “Baywatch\,” “Daddy’s Home\,” “Spiderman: Homecoming\,” “Spiderman: Far From Home\,” and “Tag.” He also provided a memorable performance as Lincoln the dentist on “Broad City” and lent his voice to animations like “The Secret Life of Pets” and “The Angry Birds Movie.” \nFrom 2009 to 2017\, Buress held court at the “Comedy at the Knitting Factory\,” his charm and wit making an indelible mark on late-night television\, featuring on shows such as “David Letterman\,” “Conan\,” “Stephen Colbert\,” and “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” \nIn 2022\, he underwent a transformation\, shedding his skin to become Eshu Tune in the world of music. His rhythmic anthems like “Veneers remix” with Danny Brown and Paul Wall\, the lively bowling song “1-3 Pocket\,” and the meticulously crafted “I Lift Weights” echo through the streets. This endeavor was made possible through collaborations with creative minds like Kiefer\, Tru\, Eshu Tune\, Wahsabi Papi\, Kenny Segal\, Eryn Allen Kane\, and Haile Supreme. Through these transformations\, Hannibal Buress remains a true warrior in the world of entertainment.

Planted in her creative giftings\, Kayla digs her feet deep into holy ground with Anew\, a harmonious and plush artistic offering. With grandeur\, this musically rich work illustrates the unearthing and unlocking of fresh terrains of life with spiritual “keys” of splendor. Kayla has bountifully shared her heartfelt artistry all over the globe and across continents {North America\, Europe and Africa} at countless jazz festivals\, theaters\, prestigious performing arts centers\, national television platforms\, and even playing within the oceans and mountains of God’s creation as her most sacred stage. \nAs Keeper of the Keys\, Kayla eloquently embraces her pure gift as a musical scribe. She has a lofty understanding of key signatures and orchestral textures that gingerly make her mellifluous compositions whisper softly on the heartstrings of all who listen. Kayla’s artistic pieces {often resembling mini-symphonies} musically paint the fragrance of heaven and her lush harmonies create an abundance of sweet-smelling aromas. Although Kayla holds a piano performance degree from Howard University {Summa Cum Laude}\, she audaciously professes the majestic beauty of the Holy Spirit is what truly anoints her fingertips at the piano. Spiritually grounded\, Kayla revels in sharing her magnanimous gifts faithfully {and fruitfully} on every stage she graces. God’s presence is the undulating rhythm and holy abode of her heart.

What started as late-night jams and throwing wild ideas at each other quickly became a band defined by one simple rule: say “yes.” Every idea\, every experiment\, every spark of inspiration — if someone brought something to the table\, the answer was yes. That spirit eventually became the band’s name. \n\nSpearheaded by drummer / YouTuber\, Zack Grooves\, who has over 440k subscribers\, the band features Cole Sipe on bass\, Reggie McNeill on keys\, Sean Reeser on tenor sax\, and Nathan Graybeal on alto sax. Everything Yes is powered by genuine friendship. Their music blends jazz\, funk\, gospel\, progressive rock\, and improvisation into a sound that’s energetic\, playful\, and always evolving. Their live shows feel like a reunion of friends who trust each other enough to take risks and have fun doing it.\n\nAs they continue touring and building their audience\, Everything Yes stays rooted in the same foundation that began it all: creativity\, openness\, and saying “yes” to the moment.

SUMMARY:Toby Vest & The Dream Machine with opener Frank McLallen & Extra Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Toby Vest & The Dream Machine with opener Frank McLallen & Extra Eyes\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, September 4th\, 2026\nDoors open at 7:00 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\n$20 in advance (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\nJoin us as we gather for a special evening with Toby Vest & the Dream Machine supported by Frank McLallen & Extra Eyes opening. The Machine is made up of friends and talented Memphis session players Shawn Zorn (Amy Lavere\, Twin Forks\, Cory Branan)\, Krista Wroten (The Hypos\, Dead Soldiers)\, Rick Steff (Lucero)\, Dirk Kitterlin (Marcella & Her Lovers\, Augustine\, Nada Bot)\, Aaron Hanna (Dream Team\, Jon Hart & the Vollintines) & Marc Franklin\, Art Edmaiston (Greg Allman\, Little Feat). You’ll hear melodic pop songs steeped in the flavor of classic 60’s California production–Vest’s classic approach to songwriting and his band’s tight\, soulful arrangements supported by orchestral flourishes will immediately welcome you into his lush and loving musical world. \nTOBY VEST \nToby Vest is an engineer\, producer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and has played in and produced many projects in his 20 years in the Memphis music scene. The Memphis songwriter and producer released his new album Minutes Or Millennia via American Grapefruit on 4/24/26. \nYou may know Vest from his bands Tiger High\, The Bulletproof Vests and Augustine\, who released multiple records in the first half of the 2010’s. Since then\, he has released four albums under his Shadow Brother moniker and 3 albums under his own name. He also co-owns and runs High/Low Recording and has worked with and produced artists from all across the US. Including records by EchoFriendly\, Rob Jungklas\, Marcella & Her Lovers\, Snowglobe\, Chris Milam\, Dead Soldiers\, HEELS\, Magic Hours\, Jack Oblivian and Myron Elkins to name a few. \nHis new album\, Minutes Or Millennia is a stand-out collection of melodic pop songs are some of Vest’s best and is steeped in the flavor of classic 60’s California production. But this is no throwback record. Vest’s classic approach to songwriting and his band’s tight\, soulful arrangements supported by orchestral flourishes immediately welcomes listeners into his lush and loving musical world. \nThe album features contributions from Vest’s wrecking crew of Memphis session players including Shawn Zorn (Amy Lavere\, Twin Forks\, Cory Branan)\, Krista Wroten (The Hypos\, Dead Soldiers)\, Rick Steff (Lucero)\, Jake Vest (Heat Manager\, Tiger High\, The Echo Friendly)\, Stephen Turner (Late Night Cardigan)\, Marc Franklin\, Art Edmaiston (Greg Allman\, Little Feat)\, Elen Wroten\, Adam Hill\, and Luke White (Snowglobe\, Spiral Stairs) \n\nFrank McLallen\n\n\n\nAfter two decades as one of Memphis’s most trusted sidemen\, Frank McLallen is stepping into the spotlight with Extra Eyes\, his first full-length solo album on Red Curtain Records. On this album\, McLallen emerges as a songwriter whose voice balances vulnerability with poise\, somewhere between the stark intimacy of Will Oldham\, the luminous pop sensibility of Big Star\, the surrealist wit of Robyn Hitchcock\, and the sleek clarity of Role Model.\n\n\nExtra Eyes is a vibrant\, eclectic collection that showcases McLallen’s expansive creativity and distinctive voice. Sonically\, it weaves together power pop\, psychedelia\, and surrealist rock\, while lyrically\, its through-line is honesty. “It’s allowed me to write and record ideas with no goal in mind other than to come from an honest place\,” McLallen says. “That means melodically\, lyrically\, stylistically honest. It’s what came naturally.”\n\n\n\nA seasoned figure in Memphis’s underground music scene\, McLallen has played bass in Ex-Cult\, backed Jack Oblivian with the Sheiks\, chased twang with the Tennessee Screamers\, and powered the garage-pop urgency of Model Zero. But Extra Eyes is different. It is intensely personal\, written in the wake of loss and renewal as a reclamation of his love of music and his artistic rediscovery.” – Andria Lisle
