SUMMARY:Strictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presentsStrictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 13\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door | $10 students with ID\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nThe Strictly Jazz Series\, a joint presentation by Crosstown Arts and Strictly Jazz Entertainment\, celebrates classic jazz music through contemporary interpretations by acclaimed musicians.\nTrumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker is one of the most well-known and revered of all jazz musicians. His smooth sound and interpretation of jazz and popular standards made him a true original in the art form. Join the Jeremy Shrader Quartet as we celebrate the music and the musician\, performing many hits from Chet Baker’s recorded catalog of American music. The concert also features long-time collaborators and Memphis jazz legends Jim Spake\, Alvie Givhan\, Bob Buckley\, and Earl Lowe.\nTo say that Jeremy Shrader loves good music would be an understatement. His passion shines through in the notes he plays on trumpet\, his singing of classic songs\, and the many bands he leads\, including the New Memphis Hepcats\, the Hot Memphis Five\, and the Jeremy Shrader Octet. Throughout his musical career in Memphis\, he has remained busy\, performing in countless settings\, with jazz as his main love.\nBorn in Clarksville\, Tennessee\, Jeremy was exposed to Southern gospel music early on. His parents were musicians—his father a drummer—and they sang standards like Chattanooga Choo Choo and Sentimental Journey around the house. He started piano at nine or ten\, learned guitar along the way\, and picked up trumpet in middle school to join the band. In high school\, he became immersed in swing and big band music\, playing in the jazz band and exploring other jazz styles.\nAt the University of Memphis\, he earned a degree in Jazz Composition while playing in multiple ensembles. As a sophomore\, he founded the New Memphis Hepcats\, which continues to thrive today. Jeremy also freelances across genres\, co-founded Electric Room Records\, and teaches privately—continuing to shape Memphis’s jazz scene with his passion and talent.

SUMMARY:Cyrille Aimée
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Cyrille Aimée in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, March 28\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 (plus fees) | $35 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nCyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where dancing was an everyday activity\, soundtracked by the Afro-Caribbean sounds of her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival\, and the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players\, igniting a passion for jazz.\n\nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a matchless interpreter of song. She performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself\, and her version of “Marry Me a Little”\, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award.\nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Linking back to New York to connect up all the dots\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they have created her latest album\, A Fleur de Peau. to be released on a new label\, the London-based imprint Whirlwind Recordings\nCombining the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Nanocluster in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, March 18\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nIn celebration of the release of Nanocluster Vol.3\, Immersion (Colin Newman & Malka Spigel) in collaboration with ambient country masters SUSS bring their Nanocluster series to North America. One performance comprising a set each from Immersion & SUSS followed by a collaborative set. \n\n\nNanocluster is the extension of Colin and Malka’s relationship\, friendships and commitment to art and ideas. They initially met when Colin produced Malka’s band in 1985. The collaboration started there. They then became a couple and created their own projects\, like the instrumental electronic duo Immersion\, in 1994. \n\nThe songs had been written and rehearsed prior to each performance. This adventure led to a debut album\, Nanocluster Vol 1\, released in 2021 with Stereolab singer/guitarist Laetitia Sadier\, German post-rock duo Tarwater\, electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss and experimental artist Robin Rimbaud (Scanner).  \nNanocluster Vol 2 further developed this idea with a stark beauty that sounds like a future pop with sleek lines and unexpected great melodies. Built around Thor Harris\, the charismatic percussion player from Swans and many other projects\, and Cubzoa (Jack Wolter from the band Penelope Isles).  \nKey to the process is Colin and Malka’s radio show for Slack City radio\, Swimming In Sound with its entertainingly diverse playlist that has widened their horizons. It’s also helped build relationships not only with these collaborators but also musicians like the ambient country masters SUSS\, with whom they have produced Nanocluster Vol.3 which will be released in mid February 2025 followed by extended Nanocluster tour in the USA.  \nMalka: “Nanocluster is collaboration but in a very specific form. We don’t have rules. It’s a series of creative snapshots.” \nColin: “It’s chemistry & music. Malka & I operate as a team and now we’ve taken it to another level.” \nNanocluster is a 21st century collusion of shared ideas\, creating a momentary extended musical family. It’s about musical and personal relationships and the meeting place in the middle. A temporary band of house guests. SUSS just moved\, in ideas merged and new soundscapes were forged. This is the place where Immersion happens.

SUMMARY:Strictly Jazz: The Music of Michael Brecker
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Strictly Jazz: The Music of Michael Brecker \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFebruary 15\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door\n\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMichael Brecker was a highly influential American jazz saxophonist and composer. He was known for his technical brilliance\, soulful playing\, and ability to seamlessly blend jazz and pop elements. Brecker’s contributions to both jazz and pop music have solidified his place as one of the most important musicians of his generation and one of\, if not the most important\, saxophonists post-John Coltrane that the world has ever known. \nPaying homage to Brecker for one night only is a group led by internationally recognized saxophonist Adam Larson\, who was first inspired to pursue a career in saxophone after hearing a Brecker solo while on the way to a travel basketball game. Says Larson: “I asked my dad what instrument was soloing\, and I could not believe that it was a saxophone! I remember telling my dad that I don’t know if I’d ever get to that level\, but I wanted to try”. Such was the impetus that jumpstarted the career of Larson\, who at age 35 has recorded on dozens of albums\, releasing ten under his own name. Frequently touring the country\, Larson is excited to return to the Green Room with a stellar band that includes Grammy-Award-winning bassist and frequent Larson collaborator Clark Sommers as well as local stalwarts pianist Alvie Givhan and drummer James Sexton. \nAsked about the musical selections for the February 15th outing\, Larson says he will pull from some of his favorite Brecker recordings with special consideration to Brecker’s album “The Nearness of You: The Ballad Book”\, timely for the Valentine’s Day holiday.

Dame uses his visual arts background to bring additional texture to his overall aesthetic and live show production demanding rap music be respected as high art from the ghetto to the gallery. \n\n\nNegro Terror is the brainchild of Omar Higgins with the help of family and others. Before Omars untimely passing his wishes were for his family to keep it going (the band and other projects) if things take a turn for the worst. They went on to tour with him for the next 10 years entertaining crowds and festivals worldwide. For Reverend Wilkins’ second release\, Trouble\, recorded at famed Royal Studios and released by Memphis label Goner Records\, Rev Wilkins wanted his daughters featured more prominently and that’s exactly what he did. Trouble features the daughters ‘strong soulful vocal leads as well their warm\, distinctive harmonies. Upon their father’s untimely passing\, Tangela\, Joyce and Tawana decided to get back together to honor their father and continue the family tradition as The Wilkins Sisters.

SUMMARY:Art Edmaiston
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Art Edmaiston in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, January 31\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 (plus fees) \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nArt Edmaiston – Memphis saxophonist\, improvisor/composer and player of “Ecstatic Energy Music”.\n\n\nArt’s voluptuous sound on the tenor saxophone was sculpted from years spent playing R&B and blues in Memphis\, but has origins in the small country town of Troy\, TN where he grew up playing alone in wide open farm land and soybean fields.\n\n\n\nEdmaiston creates forward-looking music while being fully present in the moment. Bold improvisations teeming with energetic melodies that alternate between husky subtones and brilliant multiphonic flourishes. Blues and spiritual music are an underlying influence in the original compositions as well as a touchstone throughout his solo journeys.\n\n\nHis personal creative approach to the soprano saxophone makes use of smeared notes\, pitch bends and tonal manipulations offering listeners an aural picture of abstract liberated instrumental expression unlike anything heard in mainstream music performances.\n\n\n\nJoining Art in his debut performance as a leader is a cast of talented musicians and artists who have contributed to his development throughout his thirty-plus years of professional work.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Wise & Her Guys
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Elizabeth Wise & Her Guys in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, Jan 24\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“I’ve been all over the world/I’ve seen almost everything/I’ve sung all kinds of places/People call me the queen.” That’s the start of the middle verse from the modern blues standard “Mississippi Woman\,” a gritty song that’s been handed up and down the muddy banks of the mighty river that bears its name and passed along like a secret from the hills of Holly Springs to the juke joints of Memphis and into the hands of Elizabeth Wise\, a folk singer\, guitarist\, and ceramicist who possesses what they used to call an old soul. With a slide in her left hand and conviction in her voice\, Wise inhabits the lines that come next\, delivering them as a mystical incantation and a purposeful statement of fact. “No matter where I go y’all/I give them something real/People all over the world/Need that Mississippi feel.” \nThe Memphis band with songwriting collaborator Bob Buckley and Memphis legends Jim Spake and Tom Lonardo is always a fresh spin on the Wise and Wise/Buckley originals and arrangements of covers.
