Katherine Hedlund was becoming quite the fixture and turning heads in Memphis before she departed for San Francisco in 2018\, and we are thrilled to be hosting her in a rare return appearance. \nTickets: $10\nDoors at 7 pm | Performance 7:30 pm \n\n                 \n\n\n    \n  \n\nKatharine Hedlund is a jazz/soul pianist and vocalist with a musicality far beyond her years. Katharine grew up in Darien\, CT\, and began her professional performing career at 13 years old\, playing original renditions of jazz standards with her trio in local clubs around the New York metro area. Her performances frequently invite comparison to Diana Krall and Norah Jones – but with quite a bit more sass than either of the former! \nKatharine attended Northwestern University in Chicago\, IL \,to continue musical studies with the renowned saxophonist of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Victor Goines\, and soulful Grammy-winning pianist for vocalist Diane Reeves\, Peter Martin. She was awarded the highly competitive piano chair of the school’s premier touring graduate small ensemble as an undergraduate. \nShe has performed in some of Jazz’s most prestigious venues\, including The Green Mill Chicago\, The Jazz Showcase Chicago\, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola of Jazz at Lincoln Center NYC\, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, Germantown Performing Arts Center\, The Sound Room (Oakland\, CA)\, among others. \nKatharine relocated to Memphis after graduation from Northwestern and began performing weekly at the historic Peabody Hotel and the Zebra Lounge in Overton Square\, honing her skills in voice and piano in soul\, blues\, and pop styles. Katharine has since moved to San Francisco\, but Memphis will always be her musical home.

A native of Memphis\, Tennessee\, Alisa has performed as soloist with orchestra playing pieces by Miaskovsky\, Bloch\, Dvorak\, Bruch\, and Elgar. She was a winner of the WAMSO-Young Artist Solo Competition and a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony. Alisa has attended many music festivals\, including Aspen Music Festival\, Boston University Tanglewood Institute\, Meadowmount\, Sewanee Summer Music Center\, Henry Mancini Institute\, Newport Jazz Festival (Rhode Island) \, and Newport Jazz Festival (Oregon). With pianist\, Jue He\, Alisa recorded the Rachmaninoff and Miaskovsky Sonatas and the duo was featured on McGraw-Hill Young Artist Showcase. \nAlong with jazz legends Marvin Stamm and Bill Mays\, Alisa is a member of The Inventions Trio\, which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire. The Trio has toured extensively and has released three albums including the diverse works of Bill Evans\, Bill Mays\, Heitor Villa-Lobos\, Claude Debussy\, and Miles Davis. \nOn Broadway\, Alisa has played in many shows including the 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park with George\, An American in Paris\, If/Then\, Dogfight\, Venice\, Little Miss Sunshine\, Carrie\, and Next to Normal. Alisa performs with Broadway singer\, Mary Testa\, and Broadway orchestrator\, Michael Starobin\, who released their album “Have Faith” in 2015. She has played with many singer/songwriters and pop artists/bands such as John Legend\, Devotchka\, Rod Stewart\, The Roots\, and Phish. \nMaeve Brophy gave her first solo piano recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at 15. She has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England; the Amalfi Coast; Kiev\, Ukraine; New York; San Francisco; Seattle; Aspen; Nashville; and Memphis. She has performed for the Memphis Chamber Music Society and the Artist Ascending Series in Memphis and is a regular performer with the Luna Nova Ensemble. Maeve has performed as soloist with the Chernygev Symphony in Kiev as well as the Paducah Symphony and the Central Florida Philharmonic. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Russell Sherman. She has worked as a freelance accompanist in Memphis and played for numerous student recitals at the University of Memphis. She has taught students privately as well as at the Boston College of Adult Education. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher.

The series provides the Memphis community the opportunity to get to know and learn more about the talented musicians that make up the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Each month will feature a different musician or small chamber group as soloist or featured ensemble. \n\nAbout the artists:\nGreg Luscombe has served as the principal trombonist with the Memphis Symphony since 1989. He also served as the Orchestra Personnel Manager for two seasons. Since August of 2008\, Mr. Luscombe is also Professor of Low Brass at the University of Mississippi. Mr. Luscombe has been a featured soloist on various subscription concerts with the Memphis Symphony. He recently performed in recital at Henderson State University\, University of Northern Alabama\, and at the University of Tennessee (Martin). Last season\, he performed the David Concertino with the Dyersburg (TN) Community Orchestra. This season\, he will be performing the Grondahl Concerto with the Germantown Symphony Orchestra in April. Mr. Luscombe has also performed and recorded with the Chicago Symphony\, the Cleveland Orchestra\, the St. Louis Symphony and the Mexico City Philharmonic. He has also done a variety of commercial work including theatre engagements and recordings. He also performs professionally on euphonium and bass trumpet. Mr. Luscombe was recently invited to perform as a guest artist on a recital series at the Eastern Trombone Workshop (ETW-2011) held annually in Fort Meyer\, Maryland – one of the largest events for trombone in the world. Mr. Luscombe is married to Beth Luscombe\, a member of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra viola section. \nIn addition to private piano instruction at Rhodes College\, Brian Ray is the departmental collaborative pianist and also teaches piano classes at the University of Memphis. He has been a soloist with the University of Memphis Orchestra and the Memphis Civic Orchestra and has performed extensively as an assisting pianist in voice recitals. His most recent collaborative ventures have included art song recitals of works by Richard Hundley\, Samuel Barber\, Libby Larsen\, and Rebecca Clarke. He has been a student of Allison Nelson and Joan Gilbert. His areas of research include the piano works of Joseph Marx\, piano repertoire of the 20th century\, works for piano ensemble\, and harpsichord.

His films are known for their jarring visual style\, irreverent humor\, nihilistic cool\, and entertainment-over-logic sensibility. He made 40 predominately B-movies for the Nikkatsu Company between 1956 and 1967\, working most prolifically in the yakuza genre. His increasingly surreal style began to draw the ire of the studio in 1963 and culminated in his ultimate dismissal for what is now regarded as his magnum opus\, Branded to Kill (1967). \n

But with more than 25 albums to his credit\, without ever relying on the support of a major label\, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who’s made a habit of rattling the jazz world’s confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll. \nAs a daring pianist\, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. As an adventurous composer he traverses stylistic boundaries with abandon\, drawing on full-throttle swing\, deep-rooted blues\, expressive soul\, or bracing excursions into the avant-garde. As an audacious bandleader\, he delights in daring fellow musicians to take bold risks\, whether in mutable small group settings or his raucous Captain Black Big Band. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts welcomes Americana pioneers and legends Two Tons of Steel to The Green Room. \n\nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore there was Americana\, before there was Texas Country\, Two Tons of Steel rocked a sound that blended the best of musical worlds and pushed the envelope with a signature brand of country punk. \nThe San Antonio-based group packed the small bars and local hangouts and quickly became the Alamo City’s most-loved band\, earning them a spot on the cover of Billboard Magazine in 1996. It was the beginning of a twenty year journey for the 4-piece ensemble. \nReleasing “Two Tons Of Steel” in 1994 and “Crazy For My Baby” in 1995 on Blue Fire Records\, a sponsorship deal with Lone Star Beer quickly followed. In 1996\, the band began traveling outside of Texas\, including stops at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville\, the National Theater in Havana\, Cuba\, and European tours to greet fans who had embraced their Texas-born sound. \nTwo Tons of Steel continues as an institution at Texas’ Gruene Hall\, where its annual Two Ton Tuesdays summer series draws 12\,000 fans and as a popular act at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. They have been repeatedly voted “Best Country Band” by the San Antonio Current\, one of its hometown weeklies.

With Alvie Givhan\, piano\, Alan Maguire\, bass\, and James Sexton\, drums. \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7pm | Performance 7:30pm \nAbout Clint Ashlock:\nTrumpeter/composer/bandleader Clint Ashlock grew up in the Kansas City area. A dedicated and tireless contributor to the scene\, Clint has performed with such luminaries as Aretha Franklin\, the Temptations\, Nicholas Payton and Natalie Cole\, as well as being a mainstay on the local KC circuit\, most notably as Artistic Director of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra\, leader of his own groups of varying size and genre\, and as a member of ensembles such as The Project H and The Marcus Lewis Big Band. Ashlock has produced a number of recordings\, including the latest KCJO album “Rhapsody\,” which includes a 30-minute tour-de-force arrangement of “Rhapsody in Blue\,” “New Jazz Order” featuring Bobby Watson\, and with Denver pianist Ben Markley\, entitled “The Return.” As a trumpeter\, Ashlock reflects the lineage of his hard bop idols such as Lee Morgan\, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw\, and his big band writing is heavily influenced by Duke Ellington\, Thad Jones\, Kerry Strayer and Dan Gailey. Ashlock has been featured as a soloist at the First Jazz Education Festival in Shanghai\, China\, and at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Sydney\, Australia\, as a clinician across the country\, and currently needs to stop buying so many shoes. \nAbout Michael Shults:\nSaxophonist Michael Shults has been praised for his “strong\, imaginative” improvisations (Downbeat Magazine) and “fresh and intelligent musical ideas” (The Pitch). A first-call musician on the Kansas City jazz scene for nearly a decade\, Shults remains an active performer in the Fountain City and beyond\, and has twice appeared as a sideman on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. As a graduate student at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, Michael was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. He has performed by invitation as a featured soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference\, the Jazz Education Network conference\, the Wisconsin Music Educator’s Association conference\, the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association conference\, and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. \nMichael is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis. Prior to Memphis\, he taught for four years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He is a Yamaha and D’Addario performing artist and performs on their instruments and reeds exclusively.

Lenore is enthusiastic about performing the Classical repertoire as well as modern day compositions. She has performed on stage for world premieres of some very relevant compositions by modern composers Jennifer Higdon\, Mason Bates\, D.J. Sparr and John Corigliano. \nTingting Yao is currently Staff Pianist at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Before joining the staff of the University of Memphis\, she was a freelance pianist in Oklahoma City area\, the University of Oklahoma\, and University of Central Oklahoma. \nShelly Sublett has been Solo English horn and assistant principal oboewith the Memphis Symphony Orchestra since 1985. She has also held theposition of second oboe and English horn with the American Sinfonietta andthe Tennessee Summer Symphony. Her recordings are available on the Pro Organo label.

He is known for his presence on YouTube playing bass guitar and known for being one of the last people to work with Prince. Thomas also played with Grammy Award-winning R&B artist\, Ne-Yo\, on his fourth studio album. He is a native of Memphis\, Tennessee. \nAs the lead guitarist of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition\, Vernon Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk\, R&B and avant-garde jazz\, and his anarchic\, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well. \nDaru Jones is one of the most respected drummers of his generation. Born to two professional musicians\, he began playing the drums at the age of four. Though he got his start in the church\, Jones has been influenced by musicians from a wide range of genres. On the strength of an MTV video aired for the single “Boys Town\,” the record garnered airplay and modest chart success for his effort\, while creating the iconic regional anthem “Memphis Thing.” \nThe more reflective Work Songs for a New Moon\, that followed two years later on RCA\, showcased Jungklas’ nuanced blend of pop songwriting and Memphis style R&B. \nLee Froelich calls Rob’s songs “profane and poetic\, haunted by ghost and damnation” and the sentiments are echoed by the likes of Rolling Stones’ David Fricke who describes the sounds as “bloodied bottleneck guitar and choked prayer.”

DESCRIPTION:Join us in The Green Room for an album release concert with Memphis’ own Joe Restivo\, a member of the Bo-Keys. \n“One of the city’s truly special Memphis music experiences.” – Bob Mehr\, Memphis Commercial Appeal \nTickets: $10\nDoors 7:30 pm | show at 8 pm \n\nAbout Joe Restivo:\nMemphis’ Joe Restivo – member of beloved soul band the Bo-Keys – will release ‘Where’s Joe?\,’ his debut album\, July 12 on Blue Barrel Records (the non-profit label arm of Archer Records). The album crystalizes his interest in Memphis jazz music made at the intersection of jump blues\, rhythm & blues\, and jazz. This is swinging\, fun music\, jazz for hipster cocktail parties\, which Restivo has been refining with his weekly residency at Lafeyette’s over four years. \nRestivo began playing clubs in the transitional period of the 1990s\, when the blues\, jazz\, and rhythm & blues masters could still be found on Beale Street and elsewhere in Memphis. Restivo would play regularly with organ master Charlie Wood and piano great Mose Vinson and would see Newborn play every week. “He had that bebop element but it was also kind of dangerous and had a rock and roll thing\, too. It wasn’t purely serious. But he was also playing sophisticated music\,” remembers Restivo\, recalling that he also used to see old-school\, jazz-based Beale Street players like saxophonists Fats Sonny and Fred Ford\, organist Honeymoon Gardner\, and trumpet player Noki Taylor\, play live frequently. “You don’t hear anyone make the guitar growl a little bit in jazz. These sounds from that era are brackish water. Is Tiny Grimes a rock and roll artist or is he a jazz artist or is he jump blues?\,” he asks\, rhetorically. Taking these influences and making them his own\, Restivo’s masterful guitar work also recalls national greats such as Oscar Moore (Nat King Cole)\, Loman Pauling (The 5 Royales)\, Tal Farlow\, and Hank Garland. \nYet the album is no revival\, mostly fueled by original compositions. Take\, for example\, the film noir-inspired “Last Starlight Motel” or the ballad “Thelma.” He recalls\, “’Thelma’ I named after my grandmother because it reminded me of being in her kitchen\, with her smoking cigarettes.” Even the covers are done in a new style. Restivo adds\, “We played Bill Jennings and Tiny Grimes but we found our own way with them.” The standard “House of the Rising Sun” shows up in 3:4 time. Then there’s the raunchy Memphis instrumental bonus track\, which recalls music from Sun Studio. \nRestivo calls upon bassist Tim Goodwin and drummer Tom Lonardo\, a Memphis rhythm section that’s worked together and apart for over forty years\, playing behind every major touring jazz artist. Lonardo is recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Memphis Musical Heritage Foundation and has worked with who’s who\, such as Mose Allison\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Bo Diddley\, The Charlie Wood Trio\, Jim Dickinson\, and Calvin Newborn. Art Edmaiston\, a veteran of Gregg Allman and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s bands\, adds his saxophone. \nWith the Bo-Keys\, Restivo has performed in venues and festivals all over the world including Lincoln Center\, London’s O2 Stadium\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival\, as well as shared stages with luminaries in soul\, jazz and blues including Syl Johnson\, Newborn\, Bobby Rush\, and Carla Thomas. A graduate of the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at New School University in NYC\, Restivo has also played with rising soul singer Robert Finley. He spins Memphis jazz as a DJ on his weekly radio show on WEVL. \nRestivo plays a late 1940s Epiphone Zephyr Deluxe. “I don’t have any proof but this guitar was supposedly played by a guy who played with Bob Wills\,” says Restivo with a smile\, though he later found some evidence online to support the claim. \n‘Where’s Joe?’ was recorded at Archer Record’s Music+Arts Studio in Memphis\, TN to analog tape with no overdubs.

Catchy and melodic – easy to appreciate – yet bursting with kaleidoscopic virtuosity that fascinates the listener\, choro has been well-described as “classical music played with bare feet and callused hands.” \n\nAbout Choro das 3:\nA Brazilian instrumental group of three sisters and their father\, Choro das 3 began to play as a band in 2002. Flutist Corina doubles on piccolo\, trading lead and counterpoint roles with Elisa on bandolim (Brazilian mandolin)\, tenor banjo\, clarinet\, and accordion; Elisa also writes and performs at the piano. Lia anchors the harmony and provides the bass lines so essential to choro with the violão de sete cordas (7-string guitar). Their father\, Eduardo\, supplies the rhythmic heartbeat with the pandeiro (Brazilian frame drum). \nChoro das 3 shares a tradition that’s over 100 years old\, one that continues to attract new composers\, musicians\, and audiences. Lead singers/songwriters Houston and Cyrena Wages fuse honky-tonk edge with anthemic melodies reminiscent of the 70’s Laurel Canyon scene\, and soulful ballads that nod at the nature that makes Memphis\, Memphis. Now based in East Nashville\, the two children of a small-town judge elicit an unapologetic thumbprint and a “fresh take on a nostalgic sound.” \nPrevious credits include opening for hero Emmylou Harris\, being voted “Top 3 Best Local Bands” by the Nashville Scene\, being named “Country Rock Revivalists” by Pandora Radio\, and landing a track in a major motion picture starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. \nDecember 2018\, The Lost Wages released their debut EP\, “Rose Motel.” The band’s breakout video for single\, “Drunk and Forget\,” is in rotation now on CMT. The band is currently completing their second project\, produced by fellow Memphian Jesse Cole\, which will be released this summer.

SUMMARY:Sweet Soul Restorative: Yoga & Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Treat yourself to the gift of restorative yoga with live music. This workshop focuses on the breath\, supported yoga poses\, and gentle somatic movements. Live music\, vibrational sound\, and healing touch will sustain and deepen your experience. \nPay what you can (suggested donation $10) \nYoga postures (asana) are supported with blankets\, blocks\, and bolsters to achieve total relaxation of the body/mind. These supported yoga poses are coupled with gentle somatic movements that will alternately stimulate the brain and relax the body to move toward balance. Somatic movements focus on the developmental movement patterns we experienced as growing infants. They will be primarily performed on the floor and on all fours. \nPhysiologically these movements reconnect the neural pathways in the brain\, allowing us to gain more body/mind awareness. Long deep breathing and other rejuvenating breath work will be integral to the practice. The healing vibrational sounds of live music will support the practice. A wide range of ancient instruments from around the world combined with modern looping technology are used to weave an atmospheric soundscape. The music works twofold: first\, it gives the mind a place to focus as the body begins to relax and open; second\, the vibratory nature of this music is very balancing. \nAbout the instructor/musician:\nSean Murphy and Anne J. Froning formed Being:Art in 2004. Since then\, they’ve traveled throughout the United States designing and teaching dance\, yoga\, and live music workshops. Anne is a multidisciplinary artist: dancer\, visual artist\, teaching artist\, and registered yoga teacher with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience. Sean is a professional musician\, composer\, instrument maker\, teaching artist\, and dance musician with over 20 years performing experience.
