SUMMARY:Shadowlands
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Shadowlands in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, May 22\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $28 in advance (plus fees) | $33 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nJohn Raymond x S. Carey “Shadowlands”\n\n\n\nJohn Raymond and S. Carey have been playing music together for close to twenty years since their time studying music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. While they both received training in jazz and classical music\, their careers would soon head in very different directions. Carey would become the right-hand man to Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver); collaborate as a multi-instrumentalist\, songwriter\, and producer with the likes of Sufjan Stevens\, Low\, and Bruce Hornsby among others; and release four albums of his own to critical acclaim from Pitchfork\, NPR\, and more. Raymond\, on the other hand\, would become a Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer “steering jazz in the right direction” (Downbeat); release eight albums garnering praise from the New York Times\, Stereogum\, and others; and teach on faculty at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University\, one of the most prestigious music conservatories in the world.\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, the two reunited and began experimenting on what their artistic voices would sound like together. Raymond brought in a host of musical ideas\, while Carey contributed lyrics and helped shape the ideas into songs. Producer Sun Chung (formerly with ECM Records) came on board shortly after\, and together they enlisted a cast of A-list musicians to help flesh out the music including pianist Aaron Parks (Terri Lyne Carrington\, Terence Blanchard)\, bassist Chris Morrissey (Norah Jones\, Mark Guiliana)\, and guitarist Dave Devine (Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band).\n\n\nThe result is their new album\, Shadowlands (Libellule Editions)\, a stunning\, genre-bending collection of songs that combines the warmth and beauty of Carey’s aesthetic with the improvisational\, spontaneous nature of Raymond’s. The music ranges from intimate and meditative to soaring and anthemic\, with electric moments of musical interplay throughout. It’s the kind of collaboration that feels as if it were years in the making.

He has filled his resume\, on stage and on disc\, in bands that range from the rambunctious 13-piece Chicago Yestet to the intimate settings of piano trios and vocalist-led quartets. His own projects include his open-sky trio Ba(SH) and the quintet Clark Sommers Lens. He’s collaborated with guitarists Jeff Parker and Matt Gold\, pianist Darrell Grant\, keyboard whiz Gary Versace\, and vibraphonist Joe Locke. His albums brim with his smart and tuneful compositions.\n\nBut by 2019\, he felt restricted in his musical development. “I wanted to get deeper into writing\,” he says now. ‘I wanted to see what I could do if I had the capacity to add more texture to a group – to go further into the exploration of harmonic possibilities\, and to try spreading out the sounds using different instruments.”\nIt is a *rare* opportunity to take in the beauty that is Clark Sommers’ large ensemble music and even rarer yet to feature a who’s-who of Memphis musicians in collaboration with some of Chicago’s most prolific talent.\n\nJoin Clark and his ensemble for ONE-night only in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts on Saturday\, April 19th at 7:30pm.

His smooth sound and interpretation of jazz and popular standards made him a true original in the art form. Join the Jeremy Shrader Quartet as we celebrate the music and the musician\, performing many hits from Chet Baker’s recorded catalog of American music. The concert also features long-time collaborators and Memphis jazz legends Jim Spake\, Alvie Givhan\, Bob Buckley\, and Earl Lowe.\nTo say that Jeremy Shrader loves good music would be an understatement. His passion shines through in the notes he plays on trumpet\, his singing of classic songs\, and the many bands he leads\, including the New Memphis Hepcats\, the Hot Memphis Five\, and the Jeremy Shrader Octet. Throughout his musical career in Memphis\, he has remained busy\, performing in countless settings\, with jazz as his main love.\nBorn in Clarksville\, Tennessee\, Jeremy was exposed to Southern gospel music early on. His parents were musicians—his father a drummer—and they sang standards like Chattanooga Choo Choo and Sentimental Journey around the house. He started piano at nine or ten\, learned guitar along the way\, and picked up trumpet in middle school to join the band. In high school\, he became immersed in swing and big band music\, playing in the jazz band and exploring other jazz styles.\nAt the University of Memphis\, he earned a degree in Jazz Composition while playing in multiple ensembles. As a sophomore\, he founded the New Memphis Hepcats\, which continues to thrive today. Jeremy also freelances across genres\, co-founded Electric Room Records\, and teaches privately—continuing to shape Memphis’s jazz scene with his passion and talent.

SUMMARY:Cyrille Aimée
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Cyrille Aimée in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, March 28\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 (plus fees) | $35 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nCyrille Aimée grew up in a multilingual household full of music where dancing was an everyday activity\, soundtracked by the Afro-Caribbean sounds of her mother’s native Dominican Republic. The family home was in Samois-sur-Seine\, the location of the Django Reinhardt Festival\, and the teenage Cyrille would climb out of her bedroom window at night to mingle with the players\, igniting a passion for jazz.\n\nMoving to New York City\, her talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a matchless interpreter of song. She performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove and stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo. Steven Sondheim invited her to star in a tribute at New York’s City Centre\, backed by Wynton Marsalis. Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself\, and her version of “Marry Me a Little”\, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award.\nAt the height of her New York success\, new horizons beckoned. Visiting New Orleans\, she fell in love with the energy and diversity of the city and made it her home. Linking back to New York to connect up all the dots\, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman\, and together they have created her latest album\, A Fleur de Peau. to be released on a new label\, the London-based imprint Whirlwind Recordings\nCombining the depth and sophistication of jazz\, the immediacy of pop\, the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean\, it’s more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before.
